Re: Should Sulpicio Lines be allowed to continue to operate?

June 23 (Reuters) - Around 800 people are missing on Monday after a ferry sank in a typhoon off Sibuyan island in the central Philippines in what could be one of the island nation's worst maritime disasters in more than 20 years

Here is a list of some of the deadliest shipping disasters in the archipelago over the past two decades.

    * Dec 1987 - A total of 4,386 die in world's worst peacetime shipping disaster, as ferry Dona Paz, owned by Sulpicio Lines, and an oil tanker collide off Mindoro Island.

    * Oct 1988 - Dona Marilyn, sister ship of Dona Paz, sinks off Leyte province, killing around 300.

    * July 1993 - 279 pilgrims drown when an overloaded wooden temple, mounted on three boats, collapses during a religious festival as it is being towed along the Bocaue river, 20 km (12 miles) north of Manila.

    * Dec 1994 - Ferry Cebu City collides with Singapore oil tanker, killing more than 140.

    * Sept 1998 - Almost 200 die when ferry MV Princess of the Orient, sister ship of Dona Paz and Dona Marilyn, sinks in stormy seas near Cavite and Batangas.

    * April 2000 - At least 138 drown after the ML Annahada sinks off Jolo island in the southern Philippines.

    * Feb. 2004 - Superferry 14 catches fire near Manila Bay, killing 116 people. Abu Sayyaf claims responsibility, saying a suicide bomber sabotaged the boat to protest ill treatment of Muslim communities.

    * June 2008: MV Princess of Stars sinks 3 km (2 miles) from Sibuyan island in central Philippines in typhoon-lashed seas, leaving around 800 people missing.

Do You Notice that Sulpicio is involved in most of these Accidents.. and seems not to

Have learnt any lessons from more than 7000 Filipino lives it lost while under their care… or lack of care…

Surely this negligence cannot continue in the way it has..

Guidelines for all ferry’s must be adhered to. Sailing into a Typhoon seems to me to be risky at best.. even if the ship is designed to handle a category 1 Typhoon. The situation of engines failing.. then makes The Vessel float onto rocks.. as no other vessel can assist in that type of weather to avoid the “MV Princess of the Stars” running aground.. and inevitably capsizing.

i am actually in between when it comes to this issue... as a businessman, no one would want their ship to just sink in the seas, napakalaking kawalan... they didn't want this to happen... ang dapat lang siguro, wag na talaga payagan bumiyahe ang mga barko kung may potential na ito ay dumaan at makasalubong ang bagyo... friday ng gabi umalis ng manila ang barko, that time si Frank ay nasa Leyte at Biliran na... knowing na Cebu ang destination ng barko, aba'y napakalinaw na magkakasalubong lang sila kinaumagahan/kinabukasan... marunong naman siguro sila mag-monitor ng weather forecast...

I’m quite sure that the ships were insured and can be replaced but the loss of life cannot be replaced. Someone must be held responsible!

A comprehensive review of maritime safety precautions and sailing pre requisites should be done and the Senate should launch an investigation and use the findings to legislate a law that can prevent similar disasters from ever happening again.

sus accident yun walang may gustong mangyari yun.

maski anong pag-iingat pa ang gawin ng mga tao, nangyayari at nangyayari ang mga aksidente no.

pasalamat na lang tayo naimbento ang insurance system sa mundong ibabaw...at least, bakakatulong din yun kahit papaano.

hey, how about making a law that requires mandatory swimming and survival courses to all? para  kung magkaaksidente man...siguro mas mababa ang fatality rate nito.

I BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE LAWS...BUT SOMETIMES THERE ARE THINGS HAPPENING BEYOND EVERYBODY'S CONTROL...

BIG SHIPS ARE ALLOWED TO SAIL IF THE STORM SIGNAL IS ONLY # 1.

THE SHIP WAS OK, THE CAPTAIN WAS ONE OF THE MOST EXPERIENCED SAILORS ...

MOTHER NATURE ALSO UNPREDICTABLE...WHAT HAPPENED IN THAT TRAGEDY WAS THAT....THE STORM CHANGED ITS DIRECTION/PATH TO WHERE THE SHIP WAS SAILING...AND THAT ANNOUNCEMENT OF PAG ASA WAS LATE!   TOO LATE TO RE ROUTE...

THEY WERE CALLING FOR THE COAST GUARD AND THEY ARRIVED AFTER ALMOST 24 HOURS....TOO LATE TO SAVE THE PASSENGERS...

BUT OF COURSE, SULPICIO LINES HAVE THE OBLIGATION TO HELP ALL THE VICTIMS...

**SO MAYBE, THEY COULD AMEND THE LAW THAT WON'T ALLOW BIG SHIPS TO SAIL EVEN IF THE STORM SIGNAL IS ONLY NO.1...

    WORST MARITIME DISASTER

Sulpicio Shipping holds the world record for the WORST MARITIME DISASTER! The MV Doña Paz collided with an oil tanker MT Vector off Mindoro in 1987 that is regarded as the "world’s worst peacetime sea tragedy" with about 4500 people dead; dwarfing  off the 1500 deaths of the Titanic. Then in 1988  the MV Marilyn that claimed at least 250 lives sank while the vessel set sail from Leyte for Manila  under storm Signal No. 3. Ten years after, in 1998 the Princess of the Orient at the mouth of Manila Bay sank at the height of Typhoon Gading. And this year, after another ten years lapse from the last disaster, several dead bodies were found from the capsized MV Princess of the Star. It submerged near Sibuyan Island after sailing in rough waters during the typhoon Frank last Saturday with about 700 passengers on board.

     1987 1988 1998 2008. It figures. Geeked

Anybody who can break this curse?!

Re: Should Sulpicio Lines be allowed to continue to operate?

    NO, unless they:

    - have  a credible, sympathetic-looking and dynamic CRISIS Management Team, especially a  spokesperson/representative who will never brag about the amount of insurance or compensation they will be giving the victim's family. Be sensitive enough. Life lost can never be replaced with money. They are not newbies on situation like this-more or less, 4,000 people has died from the 4 damn ships they owned since 1987.

-can pass all the safety inspections and follow safety standards and regulations that governs passenger ships.

Just a thought here, has any of Sulpicio Line's OWNERs ever ride their ships?

Re: Should Sulpicio Lines be allowed to continue to operate?

The law require mandatory to all maritime vessels not to sail if there's a typhoon coming in our country. This should be strictly followed & the Coast Guard will do the work to stop them if somebody violated the rule automatically issued a ticket and pay the penalty. Not only the vessel are being saves but most of all the lives of the people on board.

TIGAS TALAGA NUH?

Re: Should Sulpicio Lines be allowed to continue to operate?

Re: Should Sulpicio Lines be allowed to continue to operate?

The only way that corruption in the Philippines will ever be curtailed is to severely punish anyone caught in the act. This includes politicians, government employees, members of the business community and all elements of society. The only way to punish Sulpicio Lines is to revolt their license to operate in the Philippines. This will send a strong message to others that haven't been caught yet.

Re: Should Sulpicio Lines be allowed to continue to operate?

It is up to our goverment agency to let Sulpicio Lines to operate.

THE ONLY THING THAT CONCERN ME NOW IS HOW CAN WE MAKE OR THE SHIPPING COMPANY IDENTIFY THE VICTIMS MUCH FASTER DURING THIS TRAGEDY.

I CAN SUGGEST IS TO LET EVERY PASSENGER WEAR THIS PLASTIC BRACELET WITH BAR CODES WHILE THEY ARE ON THE SHIP AND SAIL.AS SOON AS THEY WILL BOARD THE SHIP IT A MUST THAT THEY WEAR IT.

IS JUST LIKE WHAT HOSPITAL PATIENCE WEAR AND EVEN AT ENCHANTED KINGDOM THEY HAVE BRACELET TOO.THE ONLY THING THIS BRACELET HAVE IS THIS BAR CODE IN WHICH IT HAVE THE WHOLE INFORMATION OF THE WEARER OR PASSENGER.AS ALL OF US CAN SEE THAT SOME VICTIMS WERE BURIED NOT BEEN IDENTIFY AT ALL.IN THIS WAY THIS WILL MAKE IT EASIER AND FASTER TO BE IDENTIFY.WE ARE IN THE AGE OF COMPUTER NOW WHY NOT USE THIS.

WHAT IS A COUPLE OF PESOS TO BE CHARGE TO THE PASSENGERS.

THIS IS NOT THE ONLY SEA TRAGEDY THAT WILL HAPPEN IN OUR COUNTRY AT LEAST WHAT CAN WE DO IS TO TRY TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR THE RELATIVES TO FIND OUT IF THIER LOVE ONES IS ALIVE OR WORST LOSS

I HOPE THAT WHO WILL AGREE ON MY IDEA OR ANY GOVERMENT AGENCY OR OFFICIAL WILL SUPPORT IT

                           THAN YOU AND GOD BLESS

Re: Should Sulpicio Lines be allowed to continue to operate?

The Reason why I voted Yes to the poll – (Should Sulpicio be allo0wed to continue to operate?) The reason is that I believe the Coastguard also has a roll in the blame for this catastrophe. It is under the Coastguards jurisdiction to approve the Vessel leaving port.. They gave that approval.. when clearly their own guideline laws state this vessel should not have left port.

Take a look at RA5173 (1967) and the Amendments P.D. #601-(1974) and the subsequent Regulations current MC 407 (04-2007) under the above authority.

It is the Coastguards Jurisdiction to approve or deny a vessel leaving port under Typhoon conditions.

    Take a look at

    http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/images/news/newspics/downloads/guidelines_on_vessels_movement.pdf

    http://www.lawphil.net/statutes/presdecs/pd1974/pd_601_1974.html

The endosulfan shipment that was onboard and owned by Del Monte, the consignee of the the shipment, and the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA) may be accountable for the "unfolding chemical disaster."

"It is outrageous that a shipment of a highly toxic substance was allowed on board a passenger vessel. We demand that Del Monte and the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA) be made fully accountable for this unfolding chemical disaster, the former for continuing the use of such highly toxic chemical and the latter for allowing multinational companies to use them despite the national prohibition and the scientific evidence of their toxicity," -Greenpeace-

The question now is.. did Sulpicio know what the shipment of Fertilizer was? the manifesto of Cargo onboard should be able to determine the answer to that question.

Also alarming is the fact that Del monte is using Banned Fertiliser that the Philippines is a signatory to. Does this then mean that Pineapples throughout the Philippines being grown by and for Del monte are contaminated with this banned fertilizer? If so then which countries will be the first to abandon imported good coming from the Philippines?

Re: Should Sulpicio Lines be allowed to continue to operate?

Re: Should Sulpicio Lines be allowed to continue to operate?

C'mon u people! don't be so narrow-minded. every company/agency has its own share of responsibilties and liabilities. let's not put the blame on sulpicio lines. on the contrary, instead of blaming each other let us just be united and pray for all the victims of typhoon frank. pakiusap lang po sa mga kapamilya ng mga biktima ng m/v princess of the stars, habaan po natin ang ating pasensya kasi ginagawa naman po lahat ng sulpicio lines at iba pang tumutulong para mahanap ang iba pang pasahero. instead of complaining and whining, why don't we just pray coz as of this moment this is the most effective way to get through this tragedy. blaming, complaining, & whining won't bring back the lives that have lost! hindi po nalulutas sa pagmamadali ang problemang ito kasi marami rin po sa ating mga kababayan ang malalagay sa panganib gaya ng mga divers. it pains me a lot that during tragedies such as this, people tend to find someone to blame instead of being united. this should be  the time to show the world that filipinos are united. i just would like to share to all the people, our family is also hurting right now coz until now we still don't know  where my cousin is, he's one of the passengers of mv princess of the stars. right now, we're hoping for the best at sana ligtas siya at mahanap na siya. we're not blaming anybody coz we know that this is an accident and nobody in this planet wished for this to happen. message to all whiners out there; we know where you're coming from. we feel for you, alright! so let us just hope for the best
