Philippine peace advocates holding an Inter-faith Prayer for World Peace
Former comrades in arms are now comrades in peace!
The Quezon City Partnership for Peace will hold an Inter-faith Prayer for World Peace at the Rotary Peace Monument inside the Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City Philippines on Sept. 21. This will be followed by a symbolic Freeing of the Doves ceremony, signifying the triumph of Peace in the world. This is a repeat of last year's activities initiated by the Centre for Peace, as part of the International Day of Peace celebrations mandated by the United Nations. A tri-media Peace Forum will also be held afterwards in one of the restaurants inside the QC Memorial Circle, in cooperation with the Quezon City Press Corp under the leadership of its founder and president Jaime Pilapil.
This year's Quezon City events will be spear-headed by the All-Filipino Inter-faith Congress (APIC) which is being convened by Nilo Tayag as its national chair. It will be participated in by various civic and religious organizations with the support of Quezon City government officials and other national leaders. During the sixties, Ka Nilo (Comrade Nilo) as he was popularly known in the Philippine communist underground founded the subversive Kabataang Makabayan (Nationalist Youth) together with Communist Party Chairman Jose Ma. Sison who is now facing criminal charges in the Netherlands. Ka Nilo was imprisoned for a long time during the martial law era in the Philippines. President Ferdinand Marcos later released him and allowed him to propagate the Filipino Ideology Movement within the ranks of Philippine Armed Forces. The Philippine military later played a vital role in deposing the Philippine dictator and restoring democracy. Its restiveness, however, later became a destabilizing threat for the subsequent governments up to the present.
Ka Nilo is a Bishop of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (Aglipayan church) and is now involved in non-violent initiatives for change. Center for Peace founder Don Flordeliza, Jr., himself a former rebel turned peace advocate, personally requested Ka Nilo to lead this year's Quezon City celebrations. Don will be initiating IDP 2007 events in Digos City, Davao del Sur on the same day, thus bringing his peace campaign in the heart of Mindanao. You may also visit http://www.centre4peace.ph
