    H.O.P.E. springs eternal
    By Phillip Cu-Unjieng
    Sunday, December 16, 2007

It’s not often that the back story of a music CD carries as much weight as the music itself, as is the case with the H.O.P.E. (Healing of Pain and Enlightenment) album. A compilation of songs performed by an impressive array of artists like Gary Valenciano, Jose Mari Chan, Jamie Rivera, The CompanY, Toni Gonzaga, Fatima Soriano and Charice Pempengco, to name a few, the CD is the brainchild of the tireless consumer crusader/chemist/businesswoman Pinky Tobiano. A victim of thyroid cancer, Pinky recalled how when she’d be undergoing radiation or chemotherapy, she’d be stuck in a room, waiting for her treatment, and it would be one of the loneliest of experiences. “You’d just be sitting there in complete silence and a thousand and one things are running through your mind, all depressing and making you feel so hopeless. It was during those waiting periods that I wished there was some piped-in music that would somehow soothe, comfort, or at the very least, distract me, and help me push away the morbid thoughts.”

It was with this in mind, and the fact that Pinky’s own mother also recently had to face her own cancer challenge, that Pinky sat down with Anabelle Regalado-Borja of Star Records and conceptualized this CD of music that aims to uplift and “ease the burden.” While cancer awareness and outreach groups like I Can Serve and Bosom Buddies are direct beneficiaries of the CD sales, Pinky and Anabelle agreed that the music also had to stand on its own, a compilation of both upbeat tunes and poignant ballads, while carrying potent messages in the lyrics. Also, they had to be songs whose sentiments would apply across a broad cross-section of troubled people; that it wouldn’t just be music with cancer victims in mind, but music that could help “heal” those suffering from heartbreak, plain loneliness, or whatever.

The CD opens with a short narrative spoken by Pinky, and a solo piano piece by Pinky’s daughter, Pianne. While some of the cuts were generously “donated” by the respective artists from their library of previously recorded material, I especially liked the specially-recorded versions of Kenny Loggins’ Will of the Wind and the Beatles’ In My Life by Jamie Rivera. In My Life was used by my own family a decade ago when both my mother-in-law and mother passed away from cancer within a period of six months. When I introduced Pinky to Annabelle, the one song I mentioned that I’d like to see in the CD was Charlie Chaplin’s Smile. Given a subtle bossa beat, I see it on the CD, interpreted by 15-year-old Charice Pempengco. Yes, this is the same Charice whose YouTube performance caught the attention of Ellen deGeneres, and was invited to perform on Ellen’s show in the US. Listen to this cut and be very surprised to find out it’s a 15-year-old displaying such confident delivery and phrasing.

One other cut that deserves special mention is Umagang Kay Ganda, as sung by the duet of Jasper Manalo and Carissa Cruz. Carissa is the daughter of Gina de Venecia, and currently an undersecretary in the Department of Trade and Industry, while Jasper is a young La Salle student. It’s touches like this that give the CD a very special facet, one that shows how so many people were struck by the CD’s concept and readily enlisted when Pinky called. Even well known business personages, like real-estate developer Joey Antonio, showed support of a different type by being one of the CD’s sponsors.

As I mentioned earlier, Bosom Buddies and I Can Serve are the direct beneficiaries of the sales of the CD. You get an impressive compilation of soothing music and help these cancer awareness groups in the process. We can only thank Pinky for giving us this unique opportunity for spreading Christmas cheer. Besides adding to one’s personal collection, one can also gift friends with a copy.

    * * *

WE first became aware of Fatima Serrano and her struggle to live a normal life despite her inborn disability when her story was featured sa isang episode ng Maalaala Mo Kaya.

Talaga po namang mababagbag ang inyong damdamin. She was born blind on June 12, 1993. She was also diagnosed with kidney failure, end stage.

For 10 months, kinailangan niyang mag-undergo ng dialysis every four hours, five times a week.

In February 2004, Fatima, who was named after our Virgin of Fatima, underwent a successful kidney operation.

In July 2003, na-meet ni Fatima si Fr. Jerry Orbos ng Society of Divine Word sa isang radio program. He has since “christened” her as Fatima, the little angel, dahil through his guidance and inspiration, the girl  touched and inspired the lives of so many people.

Also, with Fr. Orbos’ help, Fatima has come up with an album, Believe Like a Child. Happily, through Fatima’s words, songs and gift of healing, she reminds all of us to be hopeful and joyful despite our sufferings.

Fatima also reminds us to go back to the Lord and  the Blessed Mother para makadama tayo ng peace in our hearts.

Fatima and her family will be migrating to the U.S. next month.

Kaya, a concert in her honor, My Offering Songs of Love, which she also topbills, will be held on April 13, 7 p.m., at the Meralco Theater.

Featured with her will be Christopher de Leon, Jose Mari Chan, Fr. Orbos, S.V.D., Fr. Erick Santos, Bro. Jun Banaag, OP (Dr. Love of DZMM) and the Kergyema 5 (Alvin Barcelona, Arun Gogna, Jan Escato, Obet Cabrillas and Adrian Panganiban).

Proceeds will benefit 140 Filipino S.V.D. Missionaries working overseas and Fatima herself, who shall set out to a foreign land.

Tickets are available at the Christ The King Mission Office and Seminary Store, 1101 E. Rodriguez Avenue, Quezon City, or call Nida Estreras at 721-745 or 727-1160.

    Re: Fatima Soriano

WE were able to watch the "Maalaala Mo Kaya" epi-sode about Fatima Serrano. She was only about 10 years old then when her life story was shown on ABS-CBN. We were so touched with her struggle to live normally in spite of being born blind.

Her disability notwithstanding, Fatima gave all her best to realize her dreams so she would not be a burden to her family.

But it was the support of her parents, says Fatima, which gave her the strength and courage to plod on.

"My being blind was not the only disability I and my parents had to hurdle," she related. "At a very young age, I was also diagnosed with kidney failure. End stage. Kaya for 10 months, I had to undergo dialysis every four hours, five times a day."

It was on Feb. 28, 2004 that Fatima had a successful kidney transplant.

Fatima was born on June 12, 1993. She was named after Our Lady of Fatima.

Fr. Jerry Orbos, S.V.D., through a radio program, met her in July 2003. A closeness which they cannot fully put into words developed between them. Henceforth, he started calling her Fatima, the "Little Angel," because her story has touched so many and served as inspiration to them.

Through her words, songs and gift of healing, Fatima keeps reminding people to be always joyful and hopeful, despite the pain they encounter. She expressed her wish that we all go back to the Lord and to Jesus' Mother, the Virgin Mary.

With Fr. Orbos' help, Fatima was able to record an album aptly titled "Believe Like a Child."

On April 13, Sunday, the Garden of the Divine Word will present a musical concert, "My Offering Songs of Love," at the Meralco Theater. The concert will feature Fatima, along with Christopher de Leon, Jose Mari Chan, Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD, Fr. Erick Santos, Bro. Jun Banaag, OP (Dr. Love of DZMM) and the Kerygema 5 (Lavin Barcelona, Arun Gogna, Jon Escota, Obet Cabrillas and Adrian Panganiban).

The concert, according to Fr. Orbos, is a thanksgiving for Fatima, because of her continuous spreading of God's love and goodness. Beneficiaries of the concert are 140 Filipino SVD missionaries working overseas and Fatima herself, who, with her family, are leaving for the US next month.

Tickets are available at the Christ The King-Mission Office and Seminary Store, 101 E. Rodriguez Ave., Quezon City. Or call Nida Esteras at 721-7457 and 727-1160.
