Chavez to U.S.: 'Go to hell, gringos!'

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- President Hugo Chavez returned to his weekly radio and TV broadcast Sunday, extolling the ideals of socialist thinker Karl Marx and telling U.S. officials to "Go to hell!" for what he called unacceptable meddling in Venezuela's affairs.

Chavez defended his government's effort to establish a socialist model and rejected U.S. concerns over a measure to grant him broad lawmaking powers, saying: "Go to hell, gringos! Go home!"

The National Assembly, controlled by the president's political allies, is expected to give final approval this week to what it calls the "enabling law," which would grant Chavez authority to pass a series of laws by decree during an 18-month period.

On Friday, U.S. State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said that Chavez's plans under the law "have caused us some concern."

Chavez, who this month announced plans to nationalize Venezuela's main telecommunications company and the electricity and natural gas sectors, says the law will permit profound changes in areas ranging from the economy to defense.

Relations between Caracas and Washington have been tense since a 2002 coup that briefly ousted Chavez, who accused the U.S. government of playing a role in the putsch. The Bush administration has repeatedly denied involvement, but recognized an interim government established by coup leaders.

Criticizing excessive consumption and self-indulgence, Chavez also announced plans to raise domestic gasoline prices and approve a new tax on luxury goods such as private yachts, second homes and extravagant automobiles.

"The one who will pay is the one who fills up the BMW," Chavez said of the gasoline tax.

He did not give details of the gasoline price hike, which he said would not affect bus drivers who provide public transportation, or the luxury tax. He said revenue from the new measures would be put toward government social programs.

In Venezuela -- one of the world's leading petroleum exporters -- gasoline costs as little as 12 cents a gallon thanks to government subsidies.

Fond wishes for Castro, comments on Hussein

In typical style, Chavez spoke for hours Sunday on his return after a five-month hiatus to the weekly program "Hello President," sending best wishes to ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro and commenting on topics ranging from watching dancing Brazilian girls wearing string bikinis at a recent presidential summit and Washington's alleged role in the hanging of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

"They took out Saddam Hussein and they hanged him, for good or worse. It's not up to me to judge any government, but that gentleman was the president of that country," Chavez said.

Chavez urged Venezuelans to embrace "21st-century socialism," which he said aims to curtail what he sees as U.S. cultural domination and redistribute the country's oil wealth to the poor through programs that provide subsidized food and cash benefits for single mothers.

"Socialism isn't going to fall from the sky. We are going to understand it, work on it, plant it, sweat it," said Chavez, praising Marx's ideals. "Socialism is built on practice."

Chavez said government officials were considering new legislation that would force businesses to set aside several hours a week for employees to study, and he recommended they read leaflets outlining socialist concepts.

A vociferous former paratroop commander who revels in the role of talk-show host, Chavez suspended "Hello President" over five months ago, saying that broadcasting the weekly program would have constituted unfair use of state airtime ahead of December's presidential election.

Chavez was re-elected to a six-year term in a landslide vote.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"Go to hell?" Now really, Mr. Chavez. Is that any way to talk to a country that buys most of your petroleum products? Where would your chickenshyt country be without OIL REVENUES from the US? Do you suppose you could finance your numerous "socialist" programs otherwise? So, Karl Marx is great? Even the Russians have given up on the idea but you who thinks he can thumb his nose at the world without any consequences whatsoever still believes in Marxist-Leninist doctrine. Hmmmm. I wonder, Mr. Chavez, if you realize just how short your life span is going to be. You are just begging for that double tap to the head, aren't you?

I don't agree with his views but I loved his anti-Bush speech during a UN conference. I almost fell of my seat laughing. I don't like Chavez but Bush is as disgusting. Chavez is a very interesting political figure to watch. Very amusing!

FILIPINOS LIKE TO ADMIRE THE CORRUPTS SO WE HAVE AN EXCUSE FOR OUR OWN SORRY AS_SSSS!!! US 13.3 PERCENT, NOT BAD FOR A DUMB PRES.

Re: Chavez to U.S.: 'Go to hell, gringos!'

How very refreshing and daring of Mr. Chavez. Do the Americans really expect the whole world to bend down and lick their backside, just like the British government has. People like Chavez and Castro have dared to do something different and attempt to find a fairer society, one where people have all the basic needs and the focus is on culture and education, which anyone must agree is far healthier than the American form of society, based on consumerism, shopping for a past time and violence. Socialism is not a political process rooted in the past. It is a living and growing set of ideals. change takes time. I admire these men who have the courage and foresight to take this step and speak out against the highly egotistical and dangerous U.S. And to  'prince' who posted a message, I am guessing you are American. You sound as ignorant and as threatening as the U.S. Watch out, Castro has managed to evade all petty U.S attempts on his life. I am sure that Chavez will prove just as intelligent. Remember, as you slag off socialism, capitalism always comes at a cost. Its just that most people do not see that cost to other countries because they rarely leave the comfort of their capitalist luxury.

You sound just like Cho Seung-Huei, the Virginia Tech mass murderer. He admired "the martyrs Dylan Kliebold and Eric Harris" (the perpetrators of the Columbine High School massacre) also. Sounds as if the lessons of Columbine were learned but they were the wrong ones.

The doom and gloom crowds just love bashing the U.S. with leftist garbage.

Just remember which country relies on OFWs to keep its economy afloat? Philippines

Just remember which country has the most billionaires in the world? U.S.A.

Just remember which country has the fattest poor people in the world? THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Just remember which country will come to help you when the next typhoon hits your corrupt country? U.S.A.

You probably see yourself as highly superior don't you? Of course. All pseudo-intellectuals and social misfits do. The big question is: Do you really think that Communism works? Can you name ONE (just one) communist country that is thriving and where common people are fat and happy? You really need to talk to your doctor about getting into a rehab facility to get off the crack cocaine, dude. It's seeping into your brain.

Re: Chavez to U.S.: 'Go to hell, gringos!'

Wow, is that really your argument? To be proud that people are fat and overweight? To be proud of the most number of billionaires? Is materialism really all that matters in life? I think things like education and culture and health are infinitely more important than material wealth. Perhaps you have not travelled very much in this world. Perhaps you do not understand such things.  To get another thing clear, I am British and we do not tend to have many typhoons in my country!! As for corrupt, yes we have elements of that in my country but I do not think that we quite hit the same scale as the U.S! The U.S is full of illiterate and overweight people who seem to lack in the culture department. Their youth has the worst behaviour in the world.  And its president has to be the most egotistical and unintelligent president alive today. Quite worrying when you consider how much power is at his fingertips. Are you proud of this synopsis of the U.S or is it all justifiable so long as people are rich? In my years of travelling and bothering to experience and read about other cultures, I have found that countries where there is far less consumerism and materialism contain the far happier people. Their happiness is based on and attained by human values and society, NOT wealth. Money will never buy you happiness, pal! And finally, for your last question,(I shall ignore your childish drug comment) Yes, I can name a country that is communist and that has the happiest people I have ever met anywhere in the world and has education and culture and health and housing available to all and would have a far greater chance of a thriving economy if the U.S would cancel its imature and highly damaging embargo. Yes, the country is Cuba. And it is high time the Americans took a more humane approach to its neighbour rather than live in the past for ever.

nice! but i think you missed the point, without money---you have no decent food/shelter/healthcare/education/electricity/water etc...you may be happy but can you preach that to the 40% of PI population under poverty line? Are we comparing countries now, we can, but it will only takes away the issue of poverty back home...by the way are you a brit citizen now? can you tell me how it works as a first generation immigrant there? i understand that US is not popular in most european countries for whatever reason..do you still see americans as the white/blonde/hollywood type or a land of immigrants/ a melting pot? Cuba issue--have you visited and talked with cubans in florida? have you seen the celebration when they heard that Castro was sick? he is not even dead yet!!! have you talked with russians from the communist russia era?by the way, US education, i cant complain more...they have grants and loans to make sure you can finish college...free schoolings from elem to hs..

Oh, I am so sorry. I didn't realize you were a limey. Limeys believe they are God's gift to humanity, don't they? And don't frigging pontificate to me about consumerism and materialism, you twit. The British East India Company invented EXPLOITATION as a means of British Empire expansion. Too bad the Americans were just better at capitalism which is why your economy collapsed after World War 2, huh?
