EVEN after three years in the business – and despite her status as the flagship artist of STAR Records and its talent management arm, STAR Records Artist Management (STRAM) – Sheryn Regis still doesn’t think of herself as a big star.

"’Di ko nga alam na sikat ako. I don’t assume na everybody knows me," says Sheryn, who has been busy hosting the Visayas leg of "Little Big Star," the children’s singing contest whose finalists will be sent to Manila. The show also has a Mindanao leg, which is hosted by "Search For the Star in a Million" runner-up Nikki Bacolod, who is from Iligan. Sheryn, being Cebuana, was tapped to host the Visayas eliminations.

Sheryn says she’s been having a lot of fun with the contestants, who come not just from her native Cebu, but from all over the Visayas region, even from as far as Bohol , Leyte and Siquijor. She is very generous with tips and advice. She knows what it feels to be in their shoes, because she was also once a little girl who dared to dream big and became a star.

In spite of all the success, Sheryn still thinks of herself as the same old Sheryn Regis from Carcar, Cebu, who used to sing Kuh Ledesma’s "Dito Ba" to the amusement of her neighbors as she sold fruits and ice cream every summer. Thinking of herself that way has kept her grounded. In fact, whenever she goes home to Cebu – like during the recent Lenten season – she makes it a point to join her neighbors in impromptu videoke sessions.

She tries her best to accommodate them because she truly enjoys it (and she does miss home), but then again, it isn’t always possible – especially with all the traveling that Sheryn does in and out of the country for shows.

Last April, she did a concert in Dagupan with Kris Lawrence, Tata Villaruel and Jimmy Marquez, the top three placers of "Search For the Star in a Million." About a week later, she motored to Mabini, Batangas, for a show. This June – on the 10th and 11th – Sheryn will be at San Francisco to perform at the Fiesta Filipina. From the 15th to the 19th of June, she will be in Dubai for more shows, to be followed by an upcoming series of concerts in Japan by July 2006.

With all her appearances outside the country, isn’t Sheryn afraid that her fans in Manila will miss her?

Fortunately, Sheryn’s fans won’t have to miss her all that much, because she has a new song out. Entitled "May Nagmamahal," it is the theme song of ABS-CBN’s new show "Nagmamahal, Kapamilya" hosted by Bernadette Sembrano. The song is included in Sheryn’s latest album "What I Do Best," which has already produced a monster hit in the power ballad "Hindi Ko Kayang Iwan Ka." Her other songs are still heard on the radio and performed at countless singing competitions, so she is never far from her audience’s mind.

Besides, as far as Sheryn is concerned, her career is in good hands with STAR Records and STRAM. Yes, she might not have a showcase program the way Sarah Geronimo has "Bituing Walang Ningning," or the way Rachelle Ann Go has "Search For the Star in a Million" (which she will reportedly start hosting soon, along with real-life boyfriend and fellow singing champion Christian Bautista), but she realizes it’s for the best.

"Sometimes, aaminin ko, oo, nagiging impatient ako at iniisip ko na baka mapag-iwanan ako lalo’t hindi ako nakikita masyado sa TV dahil madalas nga akong out of the country. Hindi naman siguro maiiwasan ‘yon," says Sheryn. "Pero ayoko naman ipilit ang sarili ko [sa ganito o ganyang programa]. Pangit na ipuwersa ko ang sarili ko. Mas maganda yung maghintay sa right time, ‘di ba? Kahit naman hindi ako ang main star, basta ang tao, masiyahan at hindi nila ako makalimutan, okay lang."

STAR Records Managing Director Annabelle Regalado is of the opinion that you can never put a good artist like Sheryn down. "Sheryn is Sheryn," she says. "Inabot niya ang ganitong status because she is talented and a hard worker, and her fans appreciate that. Besides, an artist with that much talent will never go unnoticed or forgotten."

STAR Records and STRAM have a lot of plans for Sheryn, including what might be a possible concert series or even a concert in a big venue like the Araneta Coliseum, which many people acknowledge is way overdue.

Whatever happens, Sheryn will always keep a positive attitude. "I’ve learned to accept everything," she says with a smile.

Ultimately though, Sheryn’s star will continue to shine because she is one of the best at what she does.

True to form, she’s been having a lot of fun with the kiddie contestants who come not only from her native Cebu, but from all over the Visayas region, even from as far as Bohol, Leyte and Siquijor. She is very generous with tips and advice to the hopefuls, for she was once a child like them who dared to dream big.

Despite all the success and accolades she has reaped here and abroad, she still considers herself nothing special.

On June 10 and 11, Sheryn will be in San Francisco performing at the Fiesta Filipina. On June 15-19, she’ll be in Dubai for more shows. She’s going to Japan next month for a series of concerts.

Twice a month pala umuuwi si Sheryn Regis sa Cebu para sa hosting job na ginagawa niya roon para sa Little Big Star (Cebu edition).

Tuluy-tuloy ang amateur search doon for young singers kahit dito rest muna ang Manila edition for one season. Sa October ibabalik ang LBS.

Sana, matuloy ang plano para maging masaya ang kaibigan namin, ang talented young director ng LBS na si Lino Cayetano (ng Calla Lily with Maryo J).

Back to Sheryn, tine-tape niya ang two weekly episodes in just one day.

Sa Manila na naka-settle ang pamilya ni Sheryn, pati si Maestro Earl Echevarri at ang daughter niyang si Sweety, 3 y/o, na nag-aaral na sa Montessori West.

Naghahanda ngayon si Sheryn para sa kanyang Pagcor show sa Parañaque sa July 28 (Friday), ang The Best of Broadway & More.

Kasama niya rito si Reuben Laurente at ang Classic Band.

Three years after making a name as a runner-up in a singing contest at ABS-CBN, Sheryn Regis has now settled with her family (Earl and Sweetie) in a condo unit she bought. She also bought recently a lot in Mindanao Avenue, Quezon City.

But she still goes home to Cebu City twice a month to tape the episodes for Little Big Star, Cebu Edition. She’s a regular in ASAP on ABS-CBN. She is set to do a show with Cueshe’ in Guam in early September.

Sheryn is winding up preparations for her Best of Broadway & More show at the Pagcor Grand Theater at the Casino Filipino in Parañaque City tomorrow, Friday (July 28).

Moreover, Sheryn – now called the Crystal Voice of Asia (she was a Voice of Asia winner in 2005) – is set to perform classic hits from Broadway. Her special guests include Ruben Laurente and the Classified Band.

Sheryn Regis holds concert tonight at Casino-Parañaque

A "Star In A Million" first runner-up Sheryn Regis, petite and charming, will perform in a concert, "The Best of Broadway and More" which will be held tonight at the PAGCOR Casino, Parañaque City.

Sheryn will perform classic hits, like "Memory," "Cabaret," "Big Spender," "New York, New York," "Reflections," and "MacArthur’s Park," among others. Her special guests are Ruben Laurente and Classified Band.

Sheryn is a theater actress, and her troupe has performed in the US and Canada.

"I became an ambassador of goodwill through theater," Sheryn said.

She finished a Bachelor on Secondary Teaching from a college in Cebu, and she has been singing on stage for the last 14 years.

"I dream of recording my songs abroad, to have an album produced there," she said.

She is so passionate about her singing career.

One single she sang which became so popular is "Coming Out In The Rain" under the Star Record.

Her second single, "What I Do Best" reached the levels of Gold and Platinum. She described the single as a "reaching out," or "masang-masa."

Sheryn recalled that she was only five years old when she joined amateur singing contest.

Her latest single is "Hindi Ko Kayang Iwan Ka" and it is incorporated in her second albun, "Dahil Nagmamahal."

The album perhaps reveals her true love — a three-year-old daughter from a man whom she has been loving for eight years now — four years of engagement, and followed by a wedding that is now on its fourth anniversary.

Sheryn is now 25 years old, and like her married life, she is not expected to hide like what other entertainers do.

Her husband, a musician himself and company in her theatrical and singing engagements here and abroad, has provided her with the necessary support and guidance. He is also her musical director!

"The Best of Broadway and More," as Sheryn will perform it, will definitely enthrall the audience!
