Maging ang mga nakalaban nila ay natuwa nang humakot sila ng napakaraming awards Jed, 4 golds sa Pop ("I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing"), Broadway ("Home"), Original ("Be My Lady"), Gospel ("Take Me Out of the Dark"), bukod pa sa Grand World Champion siya, Overall Vocals Champion at Overall Male Vocals Champion at si Rizza ay Overall Female Vocals Champion, may 3 gold sa Pop ("On The Wings of Love"), Broadway ("Memory"), Original (I"ll Never Say Goodbye") at silver sa R&B ("If I Ain’t Got You").

Nanalo rin silang dalawa sa Overall Duet World Champion, gold medalists sa Pop ("You’re My Angel" at Broadway ("Last Night of the World") dahil ang ibang mga bansa ay may 250 (South Africa) o kaya ay 150 (USA) contestants pero ang Pilipinas ay dadalawa lamang ang ipinadala . Lilima lamang sila sa grupo. Ang tatlo pa ay sina Ida Henares, Head ng Delegation, Michael Chiong, Event Coordinator at Jeanette Reyes Co, Road Manager.

Wala silang budget!

Tubong-Iloilo itong si Jed, whose real name is John Edward Tajanlight.

But just for kicks, nang malaman niyang mag-a-audition for a soloist ang isang banda na tumutugtog sa noo'y popular Fashion Café in Glorietta, Makati, he decided to take a chance.

Pumasa siya. However, when his dad, who actually was the one who taught him how to sing dahil choir master ito ng simbahang pinupuntahan nila madalas sa Iloilo, learned about what he did, he summoned him home.

The eldest in a brood of three, Jed's dad obviously did not want his eldest na pumalaot sa singing profession.

Si Ronnie Henares, who eventually became his first talent manager (now it's his auntie, Alma), who encouraged him to try his luck in Manila again.

    * * *

Universal just released Jed's second album, Songs Rediscovered, which contains several hits, including Love Always Finds a Way. Did you know na itong awiting ito ang type niyang paulit-ulit na ihandog kay Rachelle Ann?

'Yang pag-ibig talaga, pilit mo mang pigilin, pipiglas at pipiglas pa rin.

Aside nga pala from the 2005 Grand World Champion for Performing Arts (across all categories), Jed also received from the WCOPA the following awards: Overall Vocals World Champion; Overall Male Vocals World Champion, Gold Medal, Pop, Male Vocals; Gold Medal, Broadway, Male Vocals; Gold Medal, Original, Male Vocals and Gold Medal, Gospel, Male Vocals.

SWEEPING 6 gold medals, the title Champion of the World and over-all Grand Champion in the recently held World Champion-ship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Los Angeles, California may finally signal Jed Madela’s entry into the ranks of pop superstars in the Philippines.

Although Jed had earlier won the Voice of Asia grand championship in Kazhakstan, Central Asia, his career has not really taken off unlike his contemporaries who topped talent searches on TV. But, this recent victory of his can perhaps make the difference.

Filipinos are now in awe of Jed’s success in what is considered the Olympics of performing artists worldwide. Jed isn’t alone in his victory. Another local artist, Rizza Navales, brought home 5 golds and the title Champion of the World (female division). Both Jed and Rizza have released albums under Universal Records.

Ida Henares, head of GMA’s Artist Center, said the 2005 WCOPA was participated by 51 nations, from Armenia to Zimbabwe. The Philip-pines sent the smallest delegation of only two contestants. Other countries, such as this place in South Africa, sent a plane-load of delegates totalling 250. Host country USA had a total of 150 contestants in categories that spanned acting, modelling, singing.

In a media lunch last Wednesday, Jed recalled the stressful details of the competition. ‘It’s the ultimate singing contest, and also my last contest ever,’ he smiled. He sang 6 songs in all for the different categories: Home under Broadway, Be My Lady for original composition, I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing for Pop, and Take Me Out of the Dark for gospel.

In the duet category, Jed and Rizza sang Last Night of the World from Miss Saigon and the pop song, You’re My Angel.

While the WCOPA doesn’t hand out cash prizes, Jed and Riza believe the honor they have won for the country and for themselves is much more than a few thousand dollars. ‘It was tough, but it was worth it. I believe we were able to open a number of doors for other Filipino singers through this contest,’ Jed said.

True enough, Ms. Henares said the country shall be participating in the WCOPA event every year hence. Henares also said she got lots of inquiries and singing engagements for both Jed and Rizza. Unfortunately, she couldn’t entertain them as they had a limited working visa.

The twin successes of Jed and Rizza in the WCOPA hopefully will make their stars shine brighter locally. Rizza is a regular on GMA’s SOP. Starting this Sunday, Jed will be seen on ASAP as a mainstay.

Give way to Jed, Rizza: world champions

AT this time when our country faces so many problems caused by our corrupt leaders, Jed Madela and Rizza Navales, our representatives to the World Champions of Performing Arts (WCOPA) held August 6 to 16 at the Burbank Hilton Hotel in Hollywood, California, give us reasons to be proud.

Solo, Jed won in seven categories: Overall vocals World Champion, Overall Male Vocals World Champion, Gold Medal, Pop-Male (he sang "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing"). Gold Medal, Broadway-Male (he sang "Home"). Gold Medal, Original Song -Male ("Be My Lady") and Gold Medal -Gospel, Male ("Take Me Out of the Dark"). He also won the highest prize: 2005 Grand World Champion for the Performing Arts, across all categories.

Rizza won in five categories: Overall Female Vocals World Champion. Gold Medal, Pop-Female ("On the Wings of Love"). Gold Medal -Broadway ("Memory"). Gold Medal, Original Song-("I'll Never Say Goodbye"). Silver Medal, R&B-Female ("If I Aint Got You").

As a duet, they won in three categories: Overall Duet-Group Vocals World Champion. Gold Medal, Pop-Duet ("Youre My Angel"). Gold Medal -Broadway-Duet ("Last Night of the World" from "Miss Saigon"). According to WCOPA execs, never in their 11-year history had they witnessed such a magnificcent sweep of awards by just one nation. And no Asian has won there so far!

The WCOPA is a prestigious global event patterned after the Olympics and supported by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. It had 1,000 contestants from 51
countries from around the globe. This is the first time that the Philippines
competed and we immediately made our presence felt even if we had only two representatives. Other countries sent us much as 150 (U.S.A.) to 250 (South Africa) contestants.

Ida Henares is the head of our delegation and she's been appointed by the WCOPA Council as National Director of the Philippines for all WCOPA events. Due to our impressive showing, the council has allotted 20 slots for Pinoys in next year's competition to participate in the other categories like dance, acting, modeling, and instrumentalist.

The invitation to Ida was made through Mendrei and Cecile Leelin, owners of Goldilocks U.S.A., who introduced her to the WCOPA execs who asked her to organized a Filipino team. She personally chose Jed and Rizza to represent us. Event coordinator Mike Chiong helped her get support from PAGCOR and PAL, and other sources.

Universal Records, who has released the solo albums of both Jed and Rizza, supplied the minus ones of their songs for all categories. Bobson made their competition costumes while Maxi Cinco designed their national costumes for the Parade of Nations. "It was clear the Lord helped in fixing everything for us," says Ida.

After they won, they were treated to Las Vegas to watch Lani Misalucha's show and they were booked in the exclusive Palazzo Hotel 3-bedroom suite usually occupied by Janet Jackson. It was Lani's birthday and they went to her party attended by bookers and nightclub owners. Jed and Rizza were asked to sing and they wowed the crowd so now they have their own offers to perform there. One thing becomes clear: we cannot expect anything from our selfish public officials, but we can expect our entertainers to bring honor and triumph to our country.

    May the best man win

TAGGED as the Singer's Singer, Jed Madela is joining "ASAP" starting this Sunday as a mainstay with the other singing champions: Sarah Geronimo, Erik Santos, Mark Bautista, Christian Bautista, Sheryn Regis, Jerome Sala, and Rachelle Ann Go.

We ask Jed if it's he's really courting Rachelle Ann and he said yes. "I sent her flowers and a teddy bear and we text each other," he says.

What does he find lovable in her? "We're both close to the Lord and to our respective families. But I haven't seen her lately as I got busy. Sa 'ASAP' pa lang kami uli magkikita this Sunday."

Is he aware that Christian Bautista is also wooing her? Di may the best man win na lang."

If he'd choose one song to sing for Rachelle, what would it be? "Love Always Finds A Way." janlangit in real life. "Madela is my grandma's family name. I've been joining singing contests in Iloilo since I was a child, but my dad didn't want me to join showbiz. I finished business administration at San Agustin College in Iloilo when I was only 19. My dad told me to apply in an airline and I was hired as flight attendant. I was about to go to Michigan for training, but a band got me to be their vocalist so I joined them as my heart is really in it. Nagalit ang dad ko. He only relented when I won in the Voice of Asia in Kazakhstan. He finally gave his blessings."

The first time we heard Jed sang at Dish in Rockwell, we were so enthralled by his voice. He can shift from low to high notes without much effort. "Voice placement lang 'yon," he tells us.

His new album, "Songs Rediscovered," is a real collector's item and we urge you to get your own copy. His rendition of songs like "The Search Is Over," "Heaven Knows," "The Past," "Changes in My Life," "Can't Cry Hard Enough" and "More Than You'll Ever Know" are all knockouts. We keep on hearing some folks say: "wala pang pumapalit kina Martin at Gary". That's not true. Here's Jed. All other "singer-singerans" better give way.

    Re: Jed Madela (OT)

Jed Madella and Rizza Navales make history in WCOPA

    By JOJO PANALIGAN

A historical grand sweep of eleven gold medals, three plaques, one silver medal and a grand champion trophy were won by Universal Records artists Jed Madella and Rizza Navales for the Philippines in the 2005 World Champion of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Hollywood last August 11.

It was the first time one country has clinched a lion’s share of awards across all categories in the talent olympic’s eleven-year history participated in by more than a thousand contestants from 50 nations.

Additionally, Jed and Rizza were the first representatives the Philippines have ever fielded to the contest.

"It’s overwhelming. I still feel emotional recalling everything that happened. It’s an unbelievable dream come true," says Jed during a recent press conference.

Asked to render just snippets (90 seconds-long) of songs in every category, Jed bowled over international superstar judges as Bob Barker, Lizza Minelli and Dean Cain with "I Don’t Wanna Miss A thing," "Home," "Be My Lady" and "Take Me Out Of The Dark." Rizza, on the other hand, did the trick with her versions of "On The Wings Of Love," "Memory," "I’ll Never Say Goodbye" and "If I Ain’t Got You."

Jed won six gold medals in the six categories he competed in. He was also declared Champion of the World in the Male Singing Division aside from Grand Champion over-all across the dance, acting, instrumental and modeling divisions.

Rizza, on the other hand, got five golds and one silver in six other divisions. She also copped the honor in Female Vocalist category.

The two were top victors in the Duet Category (Pop).

"What’s the secret to our success? We acted as a team and worked together as family," says Rizza.

A special plaque from WCOPA in lieu of these achievements was presented recently to President Gloria in ceremonies held at Malacañang.

Philippine head of delegation, Assistant Vice President and Head for GMA Artist Center, Ida Henares, considers the triumph as nothing short of a miracle with a message to bear.

"When you’re standing in a room full of people from different nations asking for the same thing, and he gives it to the Philippines, you know it’s a gift to encourage us to push for our talents in the world market," she says.

Offers from worldwide bookers and talent agents to stay and perform in top entertainment venues in the U.S. await Jed and Rizza as soon as their working visas are approved.

The Philippine participation to the 2005 WCOPA was sponsored by PAGCOR, Philippine Airlines, Robert Pointer, Funnside, Pepsi Herrera, Bobson Clothing Apparels, Primeline, Inc., Maxi Cinco, Jeannete Co, Freddie Santos, Mike Chiong, Ariel Agasang, GM Proponents, Francis Pascasio, Ito Rapadas, Atty. James Acoba, GMA Artist Center, Universal Records and Moisannite Jewelry.

    Billy Balbastro

DUE to faulty reporting of some people who ought to know better since they are US-based, I want to put the victory of the Philippine team of Jed Madela and Rizza Navales in the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in the center of our discussion once again.

We wrote about this "magnificent sweep of awards, which was achieved by just one nation, the Philippines" in our special column last Sunday (September 4).

Two days later, Abante carried Los Angeles-based entertainment writer Oliver Carnay’s notes about his new friend, Los Angeles-based American contestant Sean Collado, 19, of former Filipino parents.

The height of cardstacking journalism and unfair, imbalanced reporting. Mali yata ang arithmetic nila."

    ***

Ms. Salinas opened our eyes to what she terms "unfair, imbalanced reporting" to enhance the image of this Fil-Am boy, 19, who represented the country of his choice, his real country, USA. Bakit naman siya ikukumpara kina Jed at Rizza when he belonged to a different country (na natalo ng Pilipinas), to a different category or age group where competition wasn’t so keen. They were not in the same age category!

The whole paragraph of Carnay’s information or notes to friend and Abante columnist Jojo Gabinete is biased reporting. Vague terms na sinadya since the six and five medals are actually gold.

And for Sean, the term "award" was used. Consciously to mislead us.

Since we talk of awards, the six golds are not the only "awards" Jed won. He won four more, hence 10 awards. Sean only won 7 awards in the WCOPA since his "distinguished award" did not come from WCOPA! But from a home club!

See, how biased reporting leads to imbalanced info and lies.

Carnay ignored Jed’s other four bigger awards than the medals: overall male vocals world champion, overall vocals world champion, overall duet/group vocals world champion. Plus the grand award of all.

Compare Jed’s six golds to Sean’s list of gold, silver and bronze (only 7) enumerated in Abante Tuesday (Sept. 6) pp.10 & 11 – gold, pop, male vocals (I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing); gold, broadway, male vocals (Home); gold, original, male vocals (Be My Lady); gold, gospel, male vocals (Take Me Out of the Dark); gold, pop, duet/group vocals (You’re My Angel); gold, broadway duet/group, (Last Night of the World).

In fact, even Rizza Navales has more awards than Sean from WCOPA with five golds, one silver, plus overall female vocals world champion and overall duet/vocals world champion (with Jed) or eight awards to Sean’s seven WCOPA awards.

We don’t know what Carnay wanted to do or say with his highly biased reporting, thus putting down the achievements of Jed and Rizza.

He didn’t mention perhaps to Jojo Gabinete that more participants were in Senior, 25 years and over, wherein Jed and Rizza participated than in Senior, 16 to 24, where Sean participated.

To compare Jed and Rizza to Sean is uncalled for and withholding information shows malice and bad faith. Bakit kaya ginawa ito?

With Carnay over there in the competition, he tries to enhance the image of his friend Sean at the expense of the real winners and champions of the world, Jed and Rizza. Kaya nga naging champion ang Pilipinas at may champion plaque for GMA.

And Carnay ignored the fact that Jed Madela is the 2005 Grand World Champion for Performing Arts, defeating the champions in Dance, Modeling, Acting, Instrumental and Variety. Ann Margret and Bob Barker are among the judges.

To mention the honors Sean won alongside the overall championships won by Jed and Rizza is an insult to common sense.

To ignore Jed’s grand award, the highest award of the 2005 WCOPA, the true winner of more than 1,000 participants from 51 nations is the height of bad faith and malicious journalism.

Why must Carnay do it? Dahil may plano itong si Sean Collado to come here and be a Kapuso, hehehe? Owww, c’mon!

Sa nakaraang World Championships of the Performing Arts (August 6-14) sa Hollywood, nakakuha si Jed Madela ng 10 awards. Kasama rito ang over-all male vocals champion at over-all vocal champion at grand champion of the world.

Naging Best Voice of Asia Male Singer 2003 ng Mainhill Awards, Breakthrough Male Performer of the Year 2003 sa Celebrity Chronicle sa US at Grand Champion bilang People’s Choice sa Internet Poll survey.

    Re: Jed Madela (OT)

    A tale of two champions

    By WALDEN SADIRI

Last August, as the opposition and the administration were battling over the impeachment of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, two talented Filipino artists were also battling 1,000 contestants from 51 countries at the 9th Annual World Championships of Performing Arts in Hollywood, California, giving more than 100% of their best efforts and talents to achieve honor and glory for the Philippines.

The result — Jed Madella was awarded the 2005 Grand World Champion for Performing Arts (across all categories), Overall Vocals World Champion and Overall Male Vocals Champion; while Rizza Navales was the Overall Female Vocals World Champion!

Both recording artists of Universal Records, Jed Madella was a Gold Medalist in the following: Pop for the song "I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing," Broadway ("Home"), Original ("Be My Lady"), Gospel ("Take Me Out of the Dark"). And Rizza Navales was Gold Medalist in Pop for the song "On The Wings of Love," Broadway ("Memory"), Origina ("I’ll Never Say Goodbye") and a Silver Medalist in R&B with the song "If I Ain’t Got You." Both were also the Overall/Group Vocals World Champions because they got Gold Medals in Pop and Broadway for the songs "You’re My Angel" and "Last Night of the World."

Their winning was beyond expectation, according to Jed since everything happened so fast. Since there was no more time to hold a local singing competition where the representatives of our country to the WCOPA will come from, Jed and Rissa were handpicked by GMA 7 Artist Center head and the National Director of the Philippines for all WCOPA events, Ms. Ida Ynares.

Fortunately for the country, Ida Ynares’ choices produced a milestone win for the country as they created a record in the 11–year history of WCOPA — a single country sweeping all the awards!

WCOPA is considered as the official talent olympics of the world, and our champions now have their own roads to follow to stardom. And below they reveal more about themselves and their aspirations.

World Champ Jed Madela joins "ASAP ‘05!"

Aside from the gold medals, Jed Madela also won a scholarship grant from Jilliards School of the Performing Arts in New York City. But what is most exciting is his joining ABS-CBN’s Sunday noontime concert show "ASAP 05" as a regular member. He joins "ASAP 05 Champions" Sarah Geronimo, Erik Santos, Jerome Sala, Sheryn Regis, Mark Bautista, Rachel Anne Go and Christian Bautista.

A stint with "ASAP" or any TV show for that matter is one of his dreams ever since he was launched by Universal Records.

"I was kidding them at Universal Records that people know my songs and my voice but not Jed, the person. So now with ‘ASAP 05’ people will get a chance to see the person behind the voice," smiled Jed.

He added that he is very happy that he gets to find his own place and home. Since he began his recording career, he has just been one of those guest artists going around different shows of the different networks.

"It was like I didn’t have any identity before. Now may kapamilya na ako at may bahay na ako which is ‘ASAP 05.’ And lahat naman sila kaibigan ko and they texted me their congratulations," he shared.

So now that he’s with "ASAP 05," Jed would like his fans and televiewers to know him as a versatile and a total performer. He’d like to showcase his singing and performing skills, something that has been honed when he joined Post Band when he was only 18 and the competitions he had participated in.

In his five years in showbiz, Jed’s been known as a versatile singer with various vocal ranges. His is distinctly his sound whether he performs pop, R&B, ballads or upbeat songs. This for him is an advantage because he never had any competition at his level. Yet he felt it was also a disadvantage since "he was never talked about" because there were no competition for him.

Over at Universal Records, Jed is already a champion with the success of his albums. His debut album "I’ll Be Around" produced the hit songs "Let Me Love You (From the Bottom of My Heart)." While the hit songs "How Can I Fall," "The Past" and the "Search is Over" came from his second album "Songs Rediscovered." He is scheduled to launch his fourth single "Love Always Finds A Way," (his love song for Rachelle Anne Go) at "ASAP 05" this Sept. 18.

As Jed debuts on "ASAP 05" today, critics’ eyes are expected to keep watch on the World Champ mainly because Jed has been rumored to be "mananapaw," upstaging fellow singers on stage.

"I’ve been told that. But if ever, those were unintentional. I’m just here as a performer at kung ganun ka lang magperform, huwag mong pigilan. Kung pipigilan mo bakit ka pa nagperform. Walang malisya yun if ever nakikita nilang nanapaw ako ng ibang singers. I don’t do that on purpose," he explained.

So how different was WCOPA from among the international singing contests he has joined?

"The pressure was greater than the last contest I joined. Usually when you’re a performer, when you get to sing on stage the first few seconds nandun yung nerbyos mo. Dito tapos na yung kanta mo yung nerbyos mo nandun pa rin kasi 90 seconds and you have to choose what part ng song you’ll showcase your voice."

Jed is not contemplating on joining any other singing competition any time soon. What he is geared on doing is putting a face on his voice and sharing to televiewers here and abroad through TFC who Jed Madela really is as a performer!

"I really want to be known as a total performer and not just a voice. I want them to see my versatility, the ranges na kaya ko. Kung baga total package and not just one of those...I explore everything from gospel, pop, R&B, ballads kasi mas makulay ka kung marami kang styles!"

Sa gospel category, ang entry ni Jed, "Take Me Out Of The Dark" ni Gary Valenciano.

    Smallest but winningest delegation

Two years ago, Universal Records contract artist Jed Madela represented the Philippines in an international competition, "Voice of Asia" and took home the grand prize trophy.

Last month, he along with co-Universal recording artist Rizza Navales represented the Philippines in the 9th Annual World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) which was held in Hollywood, California, USA. Said competition was participated in by over 1,000 participants in 51 countries all over the world. This was the very first time that the Philippines took part in the said competition with only a delegation of five with only two participants - Jed and Rizza.

Armed with determination to win, Jed and Rizza confidently did their part and romped off with 11 gold awards, one silver plus three championship plaques, which made history in the said competition.

Jed and Rizza were accompanied to Hollywood by Ida Henares (who was the head of the Philippine delegation along with Michael Chiong (event coordinator) and Jeanette Reyes Co (road manager).

Though they represented the smallest delegation and the very first time for the Philippines to participate in the said competition, the Philippines stood tall and took home the most number of awards, including the highest award, the 2005 Grand World Champion for Performing Arts in all categories which was grabbed by Jed.

    RATED A. Ni Aster Amoyo

World Championship of Performing Arts.
