Fil-Am fails on 'Voice PH' but what happens next was unexpected

MANILA -- Katherine Dela Cruz came all the way from California to the Philippines hoping to make it to the blind auditions of "The Voice of Philippines." However, fate had other things planned for her.

During an interview before the blind auditions, the 22-year-old revealed that she is a big fan of Lea Salonga, having played Kim at a local production of "Miss Saigon" in California.

So after failing to turn a single chair for her performance of John Legend's "All of Me," Dela Cruz did not waste the opportunity to ask Salonga if they can do a duet.

The original Kim of "Miss Saigon" gamely sang "I Still Believe" from the musical with Dela Cruz who not only impressed Salonga, but also the other coaches.

Salonga refused to give a critique of Dela Cruz's blind audition but vowed to recommend her to the current "Miss Saigon" production in London.

"Right now, 'Miss Saigon' is running in the West End. So what I want to do is... please keep her name because I want to recommend you," the international Broadway star said.

"This is not a guarantee of anything, not even an audition. But at least I can tell them that I met this girl in the Philippines. She wasn't right for the show, but I thing she would be right for you. So please, please see her," Salonga said.

Still amazed with what happened, Dela Cruz quickly ran to her parents backstage to tell then that her "ultimate dream" just came true.

Karla Estrada wanted to join Team Lea on 'Voice PH'

MANILA – Actress Karla Estrada, now more known as the mother of teen star Daniel Padilla, admitted that she really wanted Lea Salonga to be her mentor on "The Voice of the Philippines."

Estrada braved the stage of "The Voice of the Philippines" on an episode of the singing competition aired Saturday, and performed her cover of the 1992 hit "What's Up," originally sung by 4 Non Blondes.

However, no one among Salonga, Sarah Geronimo, Bamboo and apl.de.ap turned for her and she failed to advance to the next round.

Speaking on “The Buzz” on Sunday, Estrada said she has always been a fan of Salonga and it would have been wonderful to learn from her idol.

I can sing, yes. Meron akong sariling techniques pero gusto ko maturuan pa niya ako sa technical,” she said.

Estrada, however, was quick to add that she does not regret her decision to join the blind audition of the televised singing competition.

Cracking a joke in the middle of her interview, Estrada said it was actually a good thing that no one chose her because she is confident that the fans of her son would support her and that she might even win.

It’s so unfair. I accept the first runner up.’”

Ruffa Mae impersonator tries out for 'Voice PH'

MANILA -- Comedienne-singer Maria Krista Aguilar, popularly known as Ruffami, wanted to establish her own identity when she auditioned for "The Voice of the Philippines."

Aguilar said she really wanted to be a singer since elementary. But she ended up being an impersonator of actress Ruffa Mae Quinto after a friend of his dad told her she looks like the sexy comedienne.

However, Ruffami fell short singing Rihanna's "Diamonds" during the Blind Auditions of the competition.

"I wanted to hear something different from the song. That just did not happen," said Coach Bamboo Mañalac.

Despite failing to impress the coaches with her singing skills, for Coach Apl.de.ap Ruffami is still a winner.

"Para sa akin panalo ka pa rin kasi pinapaligaya mo 'yung mga kababayan natin e," he said.
