MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATED) The box-office take of the 38th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry "Sisterakas" on Tuesday is the highest single-day earnings of a local film of all time, according to one of its lead stars.

According to Kris Aquino, "Sisterakas" grossed P40.7 million on its first day in theaters. The Wenn V. Deramas-directed comedy opened nationwide on Christmas Day, along with seven other MMFF entries.

"We set a record! Highest single day earnings for any Philippine film in history... Congrats to the MMFF Queen, Ai Ai," Aquino said in a post on micro-blogging site Twitter on Wednesday.

"Congrats undisputed #1 box office director Wenn V Deramas," the actress-host added. "Congrats to the reigning box office champ [Vice Ganda]!"

Ai Ai delas Alas and Vice Ganda star alongside Aquino in "Sisterakas."

At the close of screenings on December 25, the comedy film earned P40,739,323.25 nationwide, according to Aquino, citing the film's booking officials.

Earnings break-down

Nationwide, "Sisterakas" was followed in the box-office rankings by the fantasy-comedy movie "Si Agimat, Si Enteng Kabisote at Si Ako," and the romance-drama film "One More Try."

According to Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Francis Tolentino, "Sisterakas" grossed P23.1 million on its first day in theaters in Metro Manila.

"Kahapon, araw ng Pasko, No. 1 natin 'Sisterakas' -- P23.1 million sa Metro Manila, sa province... P16.1 million, for a total of P39.2 million," Tolentino told ABS-CBNnews.com on Wednesday.

Starring Judy Ann Santos, Vic Sotto and Sen. Ramon "Bong" Revilla, Jr., "Si Agimat" turned in P17.3 million on its opening day in Metro Manila theaters, while in provinces, the fantasy-comedy film grossed P12.2 million, for a total of P29.5 million, Tolentino said.

Meanwhile, "One More Try" starring Angelica Panganiban, Angel Locsin, Dingdong Dantes and Zanjoe Marudo had a first-day gross of P8.8 million in Metro Manila and P4.8 million in provinces for a total of P13.6 million.

The 14th installment in the "Shake, Rattle & Roll" film series came in fourth in the ranking of first-day top-earners.

According to Tolentino, the Chito Rono film made P6.4 million on its first day in Metro Manila and P4.1 million in provinces, for a total of P10.5 million. -- with a report from Reyma Buan-Deveza, ABS-CBNnews.com

Tolentino denies rigging MMFF raffle process

ABS-CBNnews.com
Posted at 12/26/2012 1:45 PM | Updated as of 12/26/2012 1:45 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Francis Tolentino refuted actor-politician ER Ejercito's claim that the festival's theater raffle process is rigged.

MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino on ANC Headstart.

In an interview with ANC’s “Headstart” on Wednesday, Tolentino explained some films are showing in more theaters than others because provincial theaters choose the films they want to show.

“Beyond Metro Manila, we allow the theater owners to decide kung ano 'yung pick nila. Sila ang nagde-decide. Otherwise they won't be joining the filmfest. They were chosen by the theater owners,” he explained.

“Yung na-raffle natin, lock-in period 'yun for two weeks, but outside Metro Manila, for one week they can change,” Tolentino added.

On Tuesday, Ejercito criticized the system of theater distribution for the MMFF, calling it “unfair.”

Ejercito noted that, for instance, "Si Agimat, Si Enteng at Si Ako" is playing in 130 theaters, while his entry "El Presidente" only 51 theaters.

“MMFF should change this unfair system,” the Laguna governor said.

Meanwhile, Tolentino said the lineup of entries this year is exceptional and earnings are estimated to reach around P700 million.

“The profits generated in MMFF are not just for the producers. Last year we gave out a huge chunk for the victims of 'Sendong.' This year, a part of the MMFF profits will help reconstruct classrooms for 'Pablo' victims in New Bataan and Cateel,” he said.

Entries to the Metro Manila Film Festival opened in theaters all over the country on Christmas day. – With ANC

MANILA, Philippines -- Despite the box-office success of her movie "Sisterakas," actress-host Kris Aquino is not interested in doing a sequel to the hit comedy film, which also stars her friends Vice Ganda and Ai Ai delas Alas.

In her official Twitter account on Wednesday, Aquino said if ever there will be plans to make a sequel, she definitely will not be part of it.

"If ever, without me na. Sinwerte na, quit while ahead," Aquino told one of her followers on the micro-blogging site.

Despite this, Aquino said she is elated about the comedy film's box-office success.

According to data based on reports from participating theaters, "Sisterakas" earned P23,110,553.75 in Metro Manila and some provincial theaters, and P16,083,758.90 in other provincial cinemas on its first day for a total of P39,194,312.65.

"30M happy na, 35M super! But God was just overwhelmingly generous!" tweeted Aquino, who will be hosting the Metro Manila Film Festival awards night on Thursday.

After "Sisterakas," Aquino said she will concentrate on her upcoming television series "Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw" with Robin Padilla and Anne Curtis, which begins airing on January 21 on ABS-CBN.

Aside from series, the "KrisTV" host also shared that she is planning a trip abroad with her sisters next year and also wants to renovate her house.

Aquino also said her youngest son, James Yap, Jr., will start Grade 1 in the upcoming school year.

'Sisterakas' widens lead in box-office

MANILA, Philippines -- The 38th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry starring Kris Aquino, Ai Ai delas Alas and Vice Ganda has doubled its lead in nationwide box-office over its nearest competitor after two days in theaters.

The Wenn V. Deramas-directed film "Sisterakas" continues to rank first in the list of the highest-earning film entries to the yearly film festival, two days since all eight participating movies opened Christmas Day in theaters nationwide.

At the close of screening in Metro Manila and provincial theaters last Wednesday, "Sisterakas" has turned in a nationwide two-day gross of P71.2 million, according to data from the film fest organizer Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

The figure is almost double the comedy flick's total first-day earnings of P39.2 million.

From an approximate lead of P10 million over the fantasy-comedy film "Si Agimat, Si Enteng Kabisote at Si Ako" after their first day in theaters nationwide, the Star Cinema film is now leading by P23.8 million.

Still ranking no. 2 in the list of nationwide top-grossers as of Wednesday, "Si Agimat" has turned in P47.4 million in earnings from Metro Manila and provincial theaters after two days.

Starring Judy Ann Santos, Vic Sotto and Sen. Ramon "Bong" Revilla, Jr., the movie's first-day gross nationwide was P29.4 million.

The drama movie, "One More Try," starring Dingdong Dantes, Angelica Panganiban, Angel Locsin, and Zanjoe Marudo, managed to turn in more than P10 million on top of its first-day earnings of P13.1 million nationwide.

The Ruel Bayani-directed film, which is also a Star Cinema entry, has grossed P24.3 million in Metro Manila as well as provincial theaters as of Wednesday.

Now on its 14th installment -- its eighth consecutive entry to the annual MMFF -- "Shake, Rattle & Roll" ranks fourth in the list of second-day top-grossers nationwide. It has so far garnered P16.7 million.

As of posting, no data for the second-day earnings of the other four film entries has been released.

At Christmas Day closing, the remaining four film ranked as follows in terms of nationwide earnings: "The Strangers," "El Presidente," "Sosy Problems," "Thy Womb."

According to MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino, MMFF requires participating theaters in Metro Manila to give equal screening opportunities to all film entries at the start of the film fest. The number of screenings per film, however, may be subject to "sliding" or adjustment based on the earnings of each movie.

Tolentino, in an earlier interview, also said provincial theaters are not within the jurisdiction of the MMFF. Thus, equal screening opportunities for the film entries may not be ensured at opening day and in subsequent screenings.

The awards night of the 38th MMFF will be held on Thursday at the Meralco Theater in Ortigas.

Entries to the film fest will run in theaters until January 8, 2013.

MANILA, Philippines - Actress-host Kris Aquino, dubbed as the Philippines' "Queen of All Media", has revealed her New Year's resolution.

In her official Twitter account, Aquino said that her New Year's resolution for 2013 is to "stop wearing revealing gowns."

"My 2013 resolution: no more "goiter" revealing gowns. Last na po yung tonight. Balot na balot na tayo okay @JC_Buendia, Cary Santiago?," Aquino told her designers.

Aquino said she wants to have a sweet and demure image next year.

"@JC_Buendia we'll miss u- but I want to be sweet, demure & covered this 2013. Rest na my cleavage, hehehe."

On Thursday, Aquino became the talk of the town after wearing a cleavage-baring dress, which she credited to designer Cary Santiago.

Filipinos took to Twitter to comment on Aquino's bold fashion choice.

Several netizens called the gown "daring," while others joked that her outfit deserved an "award" of its own. Most of the "tweets" were posted with the hashtag "MMFFAwardsNight," which became among the top local trending topics on Thursday night.

At the awarding ceremony, the family drama "One More Try" was named Best Picture. The Emilio Aguinaldo biopic "El Presidente" was awarded 2nd Best Picture, while Aquino's "Sisterakas" took home the 3rd Best Picture award.

"OMG, 3rd Best Picture kami! #Sisterakas," Aquino tweeted.

Kris 'shocked' by 'Sisterakas' as 3rd Best Film

ABS-CBNnews.com
Posted at 12/28/2012 8:16 PM | Updated as of 12/28/2012 8:16 PM

MANILA, Philippines -- Despite her confidence in the box office pull of "Sisterakas" early on, lead star Kris Aquino did not see the comedy film taking home one of the top honors at the 38th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

Directed by Wenn V. Deramas, "Sisterakas" was named Third Best Picture at the awards night held Thursday at the Meralco Theater in Ortigas.

Aquino, who hosted the awarding ceremony along with KC Concepcion, admitted shortly after the event that she had not expected the film to rank among the Emilio Aguinaldo biopic "El Presidente" (Second Best Picture) and the family drama "One More Try" (Best Picture).

The actress-host also expressed gratitude to moviegoers who continue to support "Sisterakas," which also stars Vice Ganda and Ai Ai delas Alas.

"Na-shock talaga ako doon. Pero thank you talaga. May I just take this opportunity... na sobra kaming hindi makapaniwala sa box office receipts na binibigay niyo po sa amin," Aquino said.

Along with the other seven MMFF entries, the Star Cinema film opened in theaters nationwide last Tuesday.

According to Aquino, "Sisterakas" is projected to surpass the P100 million mark on Friday. "Napakalaking regalo po niyan, at sana po lahat kayo nasisiyahan at natutuwa sa napapanood ninyo," she said.

Aside from the Third Best Picture award, the comedy flick was also recognized with the Best Supporting Actress trophy for the portrayal of Wilma Doesnt as Vice Ganda's confidant.

After 'Sisterakas' success, Vice Ganda seen as Dolphy's successor

By Reyma Buan-Deveza, ABS-CBNnews.com
Posted at 12/28/2012 2:02 PM | Updated as of 12/28/2012 2:03 PM

MANILA, Philippines -- The chief organizer of the 38th Metro Manila Film Festival sees Vice Ganda as a successor to the late veteran actor Dolphy, who is dubbed as the Philippines' "King of Comedy".

Vice Ganda

Vice Ganda stars alongside comedienne Ai Ai delas Alas and actress-host Kris Aquino in Star Cinema's MMFF entry "Sisterakas", which has doubled its lead in the nationwide box office over its nearest competitor after only two days in theaters.

The movie has turned in a two-day gross of P71.2 million.

In an interview on the ABS-CBN morning show "Umagang Kay Ganda", Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chairman Francis Tolentino believes that the box office success of "Sisterakas" is proof that Filipinos are looking for comedians who can follow in the footsteps of Dolphy, who died due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease last July.

Tolentino said Vice Ganda may be considered as a successor to the country's King of Comedy because of his ability to make people laugh.

Vice Ganda starred in the 2011 comedy film "The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin", which is the country's highest grossing Filipino movie of all time.

"Alam niyo po noong pagkamatay ni dakilang Dolphy, siguro naghahanap ang ating kababayan ng ilang kapalit. At nakikita natin dito 'yung trend, parang si Vice Ganda ay lumalabas na isa talagang malakas humatak. Nakikita natin 'yung evolution ni Vice Ganda na isang top-grossing multi-artist," the MMDA chairman said in an interview on the ABS-CBN morning show "Umagang Kay Ganda".

"Kahit bumagyo sa Visayas, sa palagay ko ay ganito na po ang magiging trend at mayroon tayong long weekend itong New Year, palagay ko lalong pipila [sa 'Sisterakas']," he added.

Meanwhile, Tolentino hopes that this year's MMFF will surpass the P636-million earnings of the festival in 2011.

"Kahit kahapon pumipila ang ating mga kababayan hindi lang sa 'Sisterakas' kung hindi sa ibang pitong pelikula at inaasahan natin na mabi-break natin ang record na P636 million last year," he said.

Other nationwide top-grossers in this year's MMFF, based on two-day sales, include "Si Agimat, Si Enteng Kabisote at Si Ako" with P47.4 million; "One More Try" with P24.3 million; and "Shake, Rattle and Roll 14" with P16.7 million.

AiAi delas Alas shares what roles she is most effective in portraying

12/30/2012 9:48 PM
by: Bernie Franco

“Happy and contented and peaceful.”

Sa ngayon ay happily in a relationship si AiAi with a non-showbiz guy.

Masyadong matalino, so marami siyang sinasabi. Ako sa aktingan, du’n mo ako maaasahan, pero sa ganyan ang bilis, ang dami niyang nasasabi agad.”

Inihalintulad din niya si Vice kay Kris Aquino na isa pa nilang kaibigan at co-star sa nangungunang Metro Manila Film Fest entry ngayon. “Pareho sila ni Vice, mabilis magsalita, mabilis mag-isip ng punch line.”

MANILA, Philippines - Putting an end to rumors linking her to Brazilian-Japanese model Daniel Matsunaga, actress-host Kris Aquino said in a television interview that she wants to have an old man as her next boyfriend.

Matsunaga, 24, recently debuted as a guest host on "Kris TV" hosted by Aquino, 41.

He is also part of "Sisterakas", Aquino's movie with comedians Vice Ganda and Ai Ai delas Alas.

"Ayoko na ng bata," said Aquino, who has separated from 30-year-old basketball player James Yap, when asked about her opinion on Matsunaga. "Gusto ko na talaga ng matanda. Matandang matanda."

"Kasi 'yun ang gusto ni Bim (Aquino's son). Sabi niya, 'Mama, I'll accept a lolo,'" she added, laughing. "'Di ba, nakakaloka ang anak ko?"

"Like Grandpa Max daw in 'Ben 10' kasi he knows I won't kiss that lolo na," Aquino said in the interview on "The Buzz," referring to a character in the popular cartoon series.

Vice Ganda and delas Alas have been constantly teasing Aquino to Matsunaga in several television interviews.

MANILA, Philippines - Actress-host Kris Aquino, dubbed as the country's "Queen of All Media", is open to the idea of joining politics, just like most members of her family.

Aquino is the youngest sister of President Benigno Aquino III, and the daughter of two late democracy icons -- President Corazon Aquino and Senator Benigno Aquino Jr.

While she considers politics as a "career path," Aquino said she will only get into it under two strict conditions.

"Yes, it's obviously a career path, but I'll only get into it if I know, Boy, that I'll be number one," she told "The Buzz" host Boy Abunda on Sunday. "'Di ba, sorry, ganoon 'di ba, nakakahiya naman kung hindi, 'di ba?"

"And pangalawa, kung talagang sobrang selfless na ako at hindi na ako maluho," she added.

Aquino believes that she already has some of the traits of a good politician, such as the ability to get along with different people and being industrious, as brought about by her career in showbiz.

But the actress-host is also known for her lavish lifestyle, something that she said still needs to be "fixed."

"Kasi kaya ko naman talaga 'yung pakikitungo sa tao, pakikisama. 'Yung sipag, I have that. I don't have the simplicity yet. And I think to be a really good public servant, you need to be simple," explained Aquino, who is one of the country's highest paid celebrities.

Last July, Aquino cleared speculations that she will run for public office next year. The actress-host, who has separated from basketball player James Yap, is legally prohibited from marrying a government official.
