Philippine Azkals topple Vietnam

MANILA, Philippines (1st UPDATE) – Skipper Chieffy Caligdong led the Philippine Azkals past powerhouse Vietnam in their 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup do-or-die clash on Tuesday at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

The veteran winger scored the winning goal in the 85th minute to power the Azkals past the Red Warriors, 1-0.

The crucial victory kept the Azkals' hopes alive in advancing to the knockout stage.

Passes from from Jerry Lucena and Angel Guirado enabled Caligdong to score the game's lone goal.

The win foiled Vietnam's attempt to avenge their shock defeat at the hands of the then-unheralded Azkals in the 2010 edition of the Cup.

Following their frustrating 2-1 defeat to host team Thailand last Saturday, the Filipinos showed an improved game against the Vietnamese.

After Vietnam's Le Tan Tai almost scored early in the match, Phil Younghusband had a golden opportunity to put the Philippines ahead in the 12th minute but he slipped inside the box.

Minutes later, Younghusband was shown a yellow card for diving.

Another Younghusband attempt at goal in the 38th minute went wide.

Short passes between Patrick Reichelt and Paul Mulders led to a scoring chance for Phil's brother, James, but he also failed to convert the opportunity.

The second half showed a more aggressive Vietnam squad, but the Azkals' defense held up.

The Philippines then raised the tempo by bringing in Guirado and Caligdong to replace Paul Mulders and James Younghusband.

The move paid dividends as Guirado provided several scoring chances for the Azkals that led to Caligdong’s goal.

Vietnam, however, refused to back down and nearly equalized in the 86th.

Azkals goalkeeper Eduard Sacapaño stopped the scoring attempt, with the ball rattling the underside of the crossbar.

The win was good for 3 points, boosting the Azkals' placing in the group table.

The Philippines will face Myanmar next.

Weiss purrs over Azkals' defense

MANILA, Philippines – It was the Philippine Azkals' tenacity in defense that propelled them past powerhouse Vietnam in their 2012 Suzuki Cup encounter, national team coach Michael Weiss said Tuesday.

Weiss, who sat out the game after being suspended for an infraction during the Philippines-Thailand match, said his team was steadfast in defending against Vietnam.

“My team fought like lions and warriors and withstood the power attacks of Vietnam. You can not give Vietnam even a meter’s space - they would exploit it sooner or later,” the German coach said in the tournament’s official website.

The win has given the Azkals 3 points and improved their chances of reaching the knockout stage.

Weiss had to be contented watching the game from the stands, but he was pleased that his boys were able to carry out his instructions.

“It was a fantastic performance and we are back in the race. We now play a strong Philippines side and hopefully we can reach the semi-finals,” he said.

Part of his strategy against Vietnam was to save some of his players, including goal scorer Chieffy Caligdong, Angel Guirado and Denis Wolf, for the second half.

With consistent defense and fresher legs for attacks, the Azkals pulled off a 1-0 win over the 2008 champions.

“We had to employ excessive defensive style with counter attacks which just came into full swing with the changes we made with fresh players coming on,” said Weiss.

“Angel Guirado, Emelio Caligdong and Denis Wolf changed the match but that would not have been possible without the great defensive display.”

The Philippine side lost its opening game to host Thailand, 2-1.

But the win over Vietnam enabled the Azkals to keep its hopes alive.

Meanwhile, Vietnam coach Phan Thanh Hung acknowledged that the Filipinos' defense was tough to crack.

That and the Vietnamese's poor communication on the field cost them the victory, said Thanh Hung.

“Before the game the whole team had good preparation in the aspect of mentality but when the match started so many players froze and made wrong passes. And the goal, it came from a wrong pass from one player,” said the Viet coach.

“They (Azkals) had a mass defense and it was difficult to break it down. We could not create any good chances or do anything that could turn the game,” he added.

The Philippines will end its Group A matches with a game against Myanmar on Friday.

Singapore beats Azkals, heads on to Suzuki Cup finals

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

The Singapore Lions, buoyed by home crowed, booked its place in the finals of the 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup after beating the Philippine Azkals, 1-0, in the crucial game on December 12 at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Striker Khairul Amri scored in the 19th minute with a long-range strike. Azkals' Phil Younghusband tried to equalize with an attempt in the 41st minute but the strike changed direction.

Both attempts by Chieffy Caligdong (59th minute) on a shot near the box and Dennis Cagara (77th minute) on a cross to Phil were denied.

The first leg of the Azkals' semifinals match against Singapore happened last Saturday in Manila, with a goalless draw.

Singapore will face the winner of the Thailand-Malaysia match.

The Lions have already won three times in the tournament's ninth edition, while the Azkals, who were looking to make history by advancing to the finals, equaled their best-ever performance by making the semis.
