Pacquiao vs Marquez Fight Time: Complete Guide to Tonight's Action

By Mike Hoag
(Featured Columnist) on December 8, 2012

Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez IV has the opportunity to be the epic conclusion to one of the best rivalries in recent boxing history.

Dinamita weighed in at 143 pounds and looked as lean and muscular as ever in preparation for what will effectively be his last big hurrah in the squared circle.

Pac-Man has everything riding on the outcome of this one, after losing his tittle by split to decision to Timothy Bradley in his last bout.

Here is everything you need to know, and more, about this rivalry’s final showdown.

Where: MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, N.V.

When: Saturday, Dec. 8 at 9 p.m. ET

Watch: HBO Pay-Per-View (click here for ordering information)

Odds: Manny Pacquiao: -270 Timothy Bradley, +210 (courtesy of Bovada)

=========

Undercard (begins at 9 p.m. ET)

Super Featherweight Bout: Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Michael Farenas

Lightweight Bout: Miguel Vazquez vs. Mercito Gesta

Featherweight Bout: Javier Fortuna vs. Patrick Hyland

=========

Marquez’s Keys to Victory

Dinamita needs to continue to counter the quick and powerful punches of Pacquiao and turn that into offensive opportunities. Simply absorbing punches isn’t enough, though, if he wants to finally get the better of his rival.

If he can find a way to take advantage of Pacquiao’s aggressiveness and wear him down, he may be able to score enough points in the later rounds to come away with a decision victory. That's how he did in the first fight, after all.

==============

Pacquiao’s Keys to Victory

Pacquiao must be aggressive and take the fight to Marquez.

Pac-Man has a major power advantage, but Bradley is very hard to hit. The Filipino legend must harass his Mexican rival and keep the pressure on in order to score enough points to appease the scorekeepers.

Pacquiao has lost some of the power behind his punch, it seems, and will need to make up for it with aggressive and technically sound boxing.

What the Fighters Are Saying

Marquez has been hearing from people since last Nov. about how he was the winner despite the favorable decision for Pacquiao. He isn’t satisfied with those sentiments, according to ESPN’s Dan Rafael:

My motivation is that I want them to raise my hand in the ring. I don't want people to just say, 'You really beat him.' I want them to know that I beat him.

Pacquiao seems much more calm and is approaching this fight as business as usual.

“Right now my mind is focused on being more aggressive for this fight,” Pacquiao said, according to Thomas Gerbasi of BoxingScene.com. “If there is a chance in the ring during the fight, why not make the fight easy if I have the opportunity?”

What the Experts Are Saying

Promoters have had their say. Is it all hype, or do these two have another great fight left in them?

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who has been involved with each of the four fights in this series, said Pacquiao is going to come out with a chip on his shoulder after losing a tough decision earlier in the year, according to Rafael:

And I know Manny Pacquiao, having experienced the fine judging [in Las Vegas] earlier in the year [in his highly controversial split decision loss to Timothy Bradley Jr. in June] is not going to want to leave it in the hands of the judges. So we're going to see a great, great fight.

Prediction

Pacquiao wins by unanimous decision.

Pac-Man is 2-0-1 lifetime against Marquez, although the fights have all been close and come down to controversial decisions. For 36 rounds neither of these two has been able to knockout the other and that shouldn’t change on Dec. 8.

Marquez’s age will likely come into a play as the fight wears on. The more punishment Pacquiao can deliver early, the better for the latter rounds. He’ll weather the early storm from Dinamita and win the mid-to-later rounds.

That’ll be enough for Pac-Man to convincingly walk away from this rivalry with the decisive win he’s been waiting for to finally put it to rest once and for all.

After son's fight, Mommy D prepares for concert

Posted at 12/09/2012 5:23 PM | Updated as of 12/09/2012 5:23 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Following her call for her son Manny Pacquiao to retire from boxing, Dionesia Pacquiao, or Mommy D to many, revealed that she is now preparing for her upcoming concert with veteran singer Imelda Papin.

Speaking to radio dzMM after Pacquiao’s loss to Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez on Sunday, Mommy D said she is doing her best to keep her figure for her show.

Mommy D said the concert will already be in January and that's why she continues to dance to burn extra calories in her body.

Meanwhile, Mommy D said Filipinos should not be saddened over the loss of her son.

Dapat matanggap niyong lahat mga fans ni Manny,” she said.

Mommy D said if the last word only belongs to her, she would want her son to just focus on his duties as Sarangani congressman.

Jinkee: I was really scared for my husband

Jinkee Pacquiao

MANILA, Philippines – Jinkee Pacquiao admitted she was not ready to see her husband Manny Pacquiao fall down and unable to move after the Filipino boxer walked straight to the right hand of Mexican fighter Juan Manuel Marquez on Sunday.

In a phone interview with “The Buzz,” Jinkee said she wanted to run to her husband, who was on the ring motionless for what seemed like a long time, but some people restrained her.

“By the grace of God, I'm okay, he’s okay. Nagulat ako kasi first time ko nakita si Manny na matagal nakabangon so natakot talaga ako. Gusto ko umakyat sa ring pero gusto nila yung mga doktor muna, titignan muna siya,” she said.

Jinkee said she did not think anymore that Pacquiao lost the fight because all she was thinking about at that moment was his health condition.

She said Pacquiao already had himself checked in the hospital and that all his scans were clear.

“Praise God na okay naman siya. Hindi na namin iniisip na natalo siya, basta ang mahalaga yung kalusugan niya,” she said.

According to Jinkee, she talked to Pacquiao about not fighting again but her husband just remained silent.

Wala lang siyang sinabi, tahimik lang,” she said,

Jinkee said Pacquiao already talked to their children, who watched the bout on television in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Jinkee thanked all the Filipinos who supported and prayed for Pacquiao.

Maraming salamat sa inyong lahat diyan sa Pilipinas,” she said.

Celebs in disbelief over Pacquiao's loss

MANILA, Philippijes (UPDATED) – Many local celebrities were in shock following the surprising loss of Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacuquaio’s against Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez during their fourth bout at the MGM Grand Hotel in LA Vegas, Nevada on Sunday.

All of them expressed disbelief when Pacquaio was knocked out at the end of sixth round, unable to move.

Singer Gary Valenciano said he still considers Pacquiao a real-life hero despite the impact of his loss.

“You've always known how to win, and now you show that you know how to lose as well. Yes, Marquez won, but there will be other bigger challenges you will overcome outside the ring, and it will prove that you aren't just a boxing champ but a real winner for the God who still has so much more victories for you in all aspects of your life,” he said on Twitter.

For Model-actress Georgina Wilson, what’s important is Pacquaio still had a good fight.

“It was such a good fight and Manny was fighting so well. I'm so shocked, my stomach is churning, I feel nauseous. Poor Manny,” she said.

quealed Like Pacquiao's Wife) at ang #RetoPacquiao (Pacquiao Challenge).

Unexpected but glad Manny was okay. I was frightened when he just laid out there unconscious for like a minute or so.

Bieber: My fans won't leave me over a boxing comment

ABS-CBNnews.com
Posted at 12/11/2012 1:17 PM | Updated as of 12/11/2012 1:18 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Canadian singer Justin Bieber is unfazed by the idea that he may lose some of his supporters because of his Instagram posts mocking Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.

On his Instagram account on Monday, Bieber posted a picture showing a comment of one of his fans expressing dismay over his "untoward" attitude.

“JB hope you feel proud cause you just lost your fans who like MANNY PACQUIAO but even though you like Mayweather posting these pics are just LOW even for a girl like you,” the comment said.

A photo posted on Junstin Bieber's Instagram account.

Bieber replied by saying that his fans, dubbed as "beliebers", will never leave him just because of his opinions on boxing.

“If they were beliebers I know they wouldn't leave my side over an[y] Boxing opinion I have,” he said.

Several boxing fans were shocked by Pacquiao’s knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila).

This gave way to memes making fun of the loss, some of which were re-posted by Bieber on his Instagram account.

Bieber's posts were accompanied by short write-ups on his feelings about a possible bout between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

“[Mayweather] has nothing to gain fighting Pacqiao. Floyd has never in his professional career lost a fight and Pacqiao lost his last two fights,” he said.

“If Floyd wins it's not that big of a deal cuz it would be his third loss in a row, and if he loses he's gonna ruin his legacy either way there's no big win for Mayweather.. Mayweather is boxing,” he added.

Bieber's posts elicited thousands of comments, with some saying they find no harm in the memes because they are funny.

Other people, however, asked Bieber for respect for Pacquiao and the Filipino people, with the hashtag #RespectThePhilippinesBieber making it to the top trending Twitter topics in the Philippines.

Manny Pacquiao says his loss to Juan Manuel Marquez does not mean he needs to give up boxing

Posted in Sports 11. Dec, 2012
