    ‘Bandila,’ ABS-CBN’s late night

    news show bags Emmy nomination

Congratulations to the people behind ABS-CBN’s "Bandila" for recently bagging a nomination in the prestigious 2007 International Emmy Awards, beating some 800 entries worldwide in the News and Current Affairs category.

"Bandila" earned a nomination for its episode "The Subic Rape Case Promulgation," after three rounds of judging by over 500 judges participating from 35 countries. There are four nominees to the category.

Bruce Paisner, president and CEO of The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, said "The 2007 nominees are a testimony of international television news organizations which now reach a standard of excellence. The International Academy takes enormous pride in saluting the work of these outstanding news organizations and journalists from Asia, Europe and South America."

, president and CEO of The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, said "The 2007 nominees are a testimony of international television news organizations which now reach a standard of excellence. The International Academy takes enormous pride in saluting the work of these outstanding news organizations and journalists from Asia, Europe and South America."

According to ABS-CBN’s head of News and Current Affairs Ms. Maria Ressa, the international recognition vindicates the network’s decision to bring its late night newscast to an earliet schedule and compete head-on with popular soap operas and sitcoms as part of its nation-builging efforts.

ABS-CBN changed the face of Philippine television when it made a bold move in giving ‘Bandila an earlier timeslot. It is an act of leadership driven by nationalism and not merely ratings," said Maria. "Nation-building has never been popular and entails a lot of hard work. The triumph of ‘Bandila’ gives hope to every Filipino that he or she can push for radical change in the country."

The winner will be announced at the awarding ceremony slated on Sept. 24 at the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers in New York City. Henry Omaga-Diaz.

"Bandila" is anchored by veteran broadcast journalists Korina Sanchez, Ces Drilon, and each of them brings 20 or more years of broadcast journalism experience into the broadcast industry.

ABS-CBN's 'Bandila' honored by broadcast industry worldwide

Four of the world’s best newscasts were honored by more than 1,000 industry professionals that included Tim Russert (NBC's "Meet the Press"), Katie Couric, anchor of "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric", Dan Rather and CNN's Soledad O'Brien, among others during  the gala of the 28th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards in New York.

One of these is ABS-CBN’s late evening newscast "Bandila."

Bandila’s nomination to the Emmy is a first for Philippine television.

Bandila’s coverage of the "Subic Rape Case" earned its nomination along with the "Caravana Elections" coverage of TV Globo (Brazil), "Lebanon Crisis" of BBC (UK), and "Tibetan at the Chinese  Border" by PRO TV (Romania).

The newscast was represented in the ceremonies by ABS-CBN News chief Maria Ressa and Bandila anchor Ces Oreña Drilon.

While disappointed losing out to BBC, Ressa said in an e-mail to the news staff: “Not bad in my book - to lose to such an established, international organization that easily spends at least a few hundred times more than we do per newscast.”

“It is a challenge to do better next year.  It is also a time to reflect,” Ressa told the staff.

Ressa also said Ted Koppel, this year’s recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, approached her after the ceremonies to congratulate her for Bandila.

Koppel, in his acceptance speech, talked about how business people invest in television because it has such power to sell products.  News programs, he added, bring people into the store.  Given this, he said, "It is a miracle that so much excellence remains.  Profit and excellence can coexist."

FILIPINOS FROM both sides of the network wars won in major categories at the 12th Asian Television Awards, held at the Suntec International Convention Center in Singapore on Thursday.

    Best news program

The ABS-CBN late-night newscast “Bandila” won Best News Program for its coverage of the Subic Rape Case Promulgation. It bested entries from Malaysia, Taiwan, India, as well as two Philippine news shows (GMA 7’s “24 Oras” and ABS-CBN’s “TV Patrol World”).

Said Maria Ressa, senior vice president of ABS-CBN’s News and Current Affairs: “‘Bandila’ is just a little over a year old, and we are grateful that its work has been recognized by our peers in the region and the world. We wanted to put together our ideas of nationalism with a faster production pace and more succinct and analytical reporting. ‘Bandila’ has already been named one of the Top 4 newscasts in the world by the International Academy of Arts & Sciences, making it the first time ever that a Philippine network has received this recognition at the Emmys.”
