Japeth Aguilar takes first step to NBA

Japeth Aguilar fans will miss the 6-foot-8 Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagle when the 2006 University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) basketball season opens this July.

Japeth is not coming back from Chicago where he joined his family some months back.

According to Ateneo head coach Norman Black, Japeth’s parents Josie and Peter Aguilar, who played in the pros in the 80’s, are trying to get Japeth into a Division l US NCAA school, the first step en route to a stint in the NBA, for most players.

    ***

“It is the Aguilars’ dream for Japeth to be the first Filipino ever to play in the NBA, and they know that the best way to get there is to first play in a US NCAA Division l squad,” Norman said. The Aguilars are eyeing Florida International University or South Dakota University.

    ***

While the loss of Aguilar came as a big blow to Ateneo, overall, Norman feels the Blue Eagles will be more effective this year than last.

“Of course with Japeth in the team, we would have been stronger, considering that he is the tallest cager in the UAAP, and one of the most promising.”

Japeth is only 19 and still growing.

here the latest news about this Japet Aguilar thing:

source: Abante/On the Spot by Malou Aquino (July 10, 2006)

    well, some reactions?

Napaka inspiring... hehehe

in fairness kaya niya talagang maglaro, he has incredible potential... hindi naman masamang mangarap eh, to be honest he has nothing to lose and everything to gain sa bid niya sa u.s. ncaa div. one...

he just needs to bulk up a little...

Re: Japeth Aguilar takes first step to NBA

i just recently played with japhet aguilar, he is so young and likes to shoot out side pero mahina pa sa dribbling. very athletic, especially all of those two handed reversed dunks. pero bata pa talaga, i am only 6'1" but he was having problem with me when i post him out, plus an oldy and two knee surgeries, he should be killing me. but i really like him dahil mabait, magalang, hopefully he makes it sa nba, i know his family will get the right people to protect him. his dad they said used to be good pero wala na talaga, mahina na rin sa ilalim. they were having hard time beating my team kahit kasama na niya si punzalan and otto last year. may luto pa! anyway kasama ko sila sa chicago and someday we will be playing together! good luck japhet and see yah sa naba!

i played with this kid recently and he's got a lot of potential and i met his parents and played with his dad-they are good people. he has the height and the athleticism, he just need the right trainer and coach---anything is possible. back in the 90's nobody knows me sa pinas dahil sa politics, but i used to play with kenneth duremdes almost everyday sa manila noong nasa college and rp team pa siya, doon ko nalaman ang palakasan sa pinas-u need connection and japhet has far more potential. i tried out sa division 3 team sa chicago, just by showing up in practiced and everybody loved me, kahit walang agent nor representatives but i torn my acl----nawala ako parang bula, now i am 32 y/o focus on getting back in shape(have not played for almost 10 yrs). and coaching/managing sa filam team. first time kong masusubukan sa naba tourney t. 2-3 (labor day). anyway, i really like this kid, ang i am proud of him dahil mas may chance talaga siya sa nba. wag lang masisira sa kapwa niya lalo na sa pinoys at walang injuries.
