The truth on Alzheimer’s in The Correspondents

For elderly people, being forgetful is quite common. But to forget about their experiences and some parts of their past – is it due to aging, or a symptom of a serious illness called Alzheimer’s disease? This November 7, Ces Oreña-Drilon goes in depth on the disease that’s afflicting the elderly on The Correspondents.

Elderly people usually pass on the wisdom they have acquired through the years. They brag about what they have been through, cherishing their precious memories. But what if these memories deteriorate and eventually disappear?

Meet Lolo Rufino, who has forgotten his actual age, Lola Ruth, who doesn’t remember her children’s names, and Lola Suzanna, who believes that she is still a kid. Are they just going through a phase of ‘second childhood’ or are they demonstrating symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease?

What will happen to aged people inflicted with Alzheimer’s if their families could not give them sufficient time and understanding? Join Correspondent Ces as she explores all about Alzheimer’s disease in The Correspondents, this Tuesday after Bandila, on ABS-CBN.

    episode regarding stem cells

good day. i would just like to ask whether the correspondents featured something about stem cells in the philippines, particularly an interview of a certain filipino scientist named florentino lucero who has apparently developed usable stem cells from the body fats of the patients. a friend of mine told me all about the episode, and he also informed me that 4 filipinos have been treated successfully by the process, and 2 of them had alz and parkinsons.

i have read about stem cells, rather widely, and know of its technical details. i have been totally blind for more than 3 years now, and have constantly been updating myself regarding the most recent medical breakthroughs that can treat my blindness. stem cell medical technology seems to be the most natural option, and i am very interested in obtaining more information on the stem cell medical technology that has been brought here in the country by a certain filipino scientist named florentino lucero, along with the help of an australian geneticist. their full contact information, along with the complete info on the feature article, would be very helpful. i have missed it, anyway, if it did come up, and anything about it would be very helpful. thank you very much.

Promise of hope on The Correspondents

A different Christmas and New Year celebration faces our Kapamilyas in Albay, as they try to go on with their lives after Typhoon Reming left them homeless. Tonight on The Correspondents, Karen Davila visits these Bicolanos, who despite their miserable state, are looking positively forward to a brand new year.

Simbang gabi. Noche Buena. Family reunions. These are the Filipinos staples in celebrating the holidays. But, even though the people of Daraga, Albay have to make do without these this year, they are not postponing Christmas and New Year. Witness how they begin to rebuild their lives with the help of the hope the season has rekindled in their hearts.

Watch The Correspondents, Tuesday nights, right after Bandila.

A home on wheels on The Correspondents

Experience the lives of people who live in a kariton with Adrian Ayalin this Tuesday evening on the Correspondents. A twist on the term ‘work from home’, by day these people roam the streets of the Metro searching for things they can sell, pushing the kariton which becomes their place to rest at night.

A kariton can house a whole family. Babies can be born there and raised. Some even take in dogs as pets. This not only shows how poverty-stricken the country is but also creativity and the will to survive of Filipinos. How can they all fit in such a small space? What future awaits these folks? Does the government have plans for them or will they just be further covered from the public view?

Live the life of people on ‘wheels,’ watch The Correspondents tonight, January 16, right after Bandila.

    Re: The Correspondents

Made in China tonight on The Correspondents

About 80% of the goods that pass through Philippine shipping ports these days are from China. Products from China have a very wide range, name it – they’ve got it, and at cheap prices too. Do these imports help our country’s economy or doing it more harm? Bernadette Sembrano tells all on The Correspondents tonight, January 23.

Hair accessories, clothes, shoes, food, vehicles, tooth paste, raw materials – almost everything sold in the market now have tags that read “Made in China”. Filipinos have become fans of these products for not only are they pleasing to the eye their prices are just right with the Pinoy family’s budget. But local businessmen are not pleased with the flood of China goods. Some even can’t keep up with the competition China is giving.

Find out the effects on the economy of the new ‘manufacturing giant’ on The Correspondents tonight right after Bandila.

    Re: The Correspondents

    News-makers Become the News

No, doubt, journalism isn't easy. Not only are journalists tasked to do research and uncover the truth behind the latest issues, they also have to make sure everyone knows about it too. And with the nitty-gritty job of journalism comes a few unmasked personalities, and a couple of egos hurt. So, it doesn't come as a surprise when reporters receive angry threats varying from the bizarre to violent. After all, it's part of the job.

Or should it? Statistics show that 48 reporters died under President Arroyo's regime, 12 of which passed away just last year, despite laws that protect them from such incidents. Get to know the grim side of journalism, as "The Correspondents" gives us a sneak peek on how it is like to put your life on the line as a member of the press.

On February 6. get to meet journalists Alberto Martinez, Tonette Orejas and Lourdes Escaros- Paet, and join them as they share their memoirs in their respective fields, and the horror stories they get in return for reporting the news.

    Re: The Correspondents

it happened to us . When a vice mayor from Cavite had our titles titled under his name. The Title was issued last January 9 ,1990 by the Ministry of Justice National Land Titles and Deed Registration Administration officilas. The office then was already abolished at the government agency task to issue Titles was The Department of Justice Land Registration Authority. The property was located in Quezon City . But the employee who signed the Deed of assignment in favor of a particular bank was the deputy Register of Deeds of Cavite City.We were even sent out of our place using the falsified titles! And after expiration of the Alias Writ of Possession.

I hope that you can follow up the issue and can warn the public about fake titles

    The Correspondents Go Skin-Deep

No doubt, scantily-clad ladies serve as eye-candy for lots of men out there. There's the titillating excitement of seeing something you know you won't be able to see, couldn't see, or shouldn't see. As such, when the opportunity arises, most guys will grab it head on. So, it doesn't come as a surprise when men's magazine's sales shoot up the roof: all thanks to cover girls most of the male populace are dying to get their hands on.

So granted, being a cover girl will most likely guarantee you a place in the ladder of fame. In fact, it seems that it's the growing trend among young, wholesome stars these days. But is instant fame all that's in store for our cover girls? Or are the klieg lights just a cover up for sexual abuse?

Join Abner Mercado as he delves upon this issue on The Correspondents this Tuesday, right after Bandila; and open yourself up to the various questions that surround this issue.

    Manila Bulletin Online

ABS-CBN reporter reaches dream on top of the world

    By MARIBEL CHAN–APIDOS

It all started as a dream.

Abner Mercado, together with the First Philippine Mt. Everest Expedition, thought it would never come true, but on that fateful day last May 17, 2006, the seemingly impossible feat by a Filipino reaching the peak of the world’s highest mountain became a vivid reality.

"Laman ng aking panaginip sa halos labingapat na taon ko bilang isang broadcast journalist na makagawa ng isang dokumetaryong tatatak sa kasaysayan ng ating bayan. Isang kwentong hindi na kailanman malilimutan," Mercado admits.

And so Mercado went on to capture a proud moment when he covered the most captivating story of the year, a story that he himself worked hard to unveil.

His riveting chronicle of the arduous journey is essayed in the book "Sa Bubungan ng Mundo", a journal on the first Filipino’s expedition to Mt. Everest based on the official coverage of ‘’The Correspondents,’’ a news and current affairs documentary program of ABS–CBN. The book is a joint project of the Kapamilya network with LG & M Corporation, a Vibal Publishing subsidiary.

"Nabuo ang libro sa kagustuhan kong ikulong ang lahat ng aking alaala ng isang pangyayaring tumatak sa kasaysayan ng bansa noong nakaraang taon, tamang-tama naman na ang LG & M ay lumapit din sa amin at dun nagswak ang aming hangarin na iabot sa lahat ang kwento sa likod ng tagumpay ng First Philippine Mt. Everest expedition," recalls Mercado.

"Sa Bubungan ng Mundo" is the first book on the first climb of Filipinos to the peak of Mt. Everest. It contains Mercado’s narratives from ‘’The Correspondents’’ and his day-to-day journal of experiences and never before told behind–the–scenes events that transpired in the coverage that followed Philippine Team members Leo Oracion and Pastour Emata – from their training in the mountains of New Zealand and Nepal to the peak of Everest.

"Hindi naging mahirap para sa akin na isulat ang librong ito dahil magpasahanggang ngayon, buhay na buhay pa sa aking alaala, at napapanaginipan ko pa nga, ang lahat ng detalye sa di malilimutang pag-akyat na yon," this 36-year-old awardwinning journalist recounts.

The book also includes interesting facts and milestones about Mt. Everest and rare photos of the Philippine Team before, during, and after their conquest of the Himalayan Mountains. It serves as a handy and easy-to-read reference for anyone who celebrates and shares with the historical success of the Filipino on the top of the world.

"Pinili naming gamitin ang wikang Pilipino para mailahad ang kwento hindi lamang dahil mas komportable ako dito, pero dahil na rin sa kagustuhan naming mas maabot ang nakararami sa ating kabataan ngayon. Kung ginawa siguro naming coffee table book ito, hindi lahat makakapagbasa nito, ginawa naming siyang abot-kaya dahil gusto naming iparating ang mensahe sa mas maraming Pilipino," this UP Filmmaking major from Olongapo City shares.

The book is now available in all National Book Store outlets nationwide. For orders, contact LG&M Corporation at (02) 7122722 local 342.

It seems that you cannot detach the concept of beauty among women. After all, there's a prevalent idea that women are supposed to embody beauty; and in our case, beauty is synonymous to fair skin, a slim figure and pointy noses: the typical image of a Western woman. The Correspondents gives us a sneak peek on how Filipina women conceive beauty: and the steps they undertake to achieve it.

In a poverty-stricken area, a group of teenage girls arm themselves with a variety of beauty regimen to combat their insecurities: thirteen year-old Tin-Tin wants to have straight hair, 16 year-old Julie and 14 year-old Michelle both want to get thinner while 15 year-old Fina wants to be fatter, 14 year-old Angelique wants to have better teeth, 15 year-old Sheeska wants to have fair skin, while 15-year old Gelyn dreams of a pointy nose. Collectively known as the "So Sisters", they allot precious time and money to make themselves more alluring, carefully budgeting their allowances for hot oil treatments, whitening soaps and lotion, make-up and powder. Meanwhile, on another part of the city, Escell Angeles undergoes a nose job, Andrea Bautista falls under the prey of bulimia, and Crystal Henares undergoes liposuction. Varying from cosmetics to surgery, these girls go through various measures, with various reasons, in order to make themselves more socially acceptable, physically.

Sinag De-Leon Amado, a famous tri-athlete, on the other hand, thinks that beauty lies underneath the physical facade: real beauty lies in a person's whole self, not just skin-deep. Growing up, she was more concerned in discovering her skills and passions, than worrying how other people think of herself. Hopefully like her, other teens will also see the real beauty in themselves and celebrate their differences. After all, beauty lies within each and everyone of us, all we have to do is acknowledge it.

Tune in to The Corresspondents every Tuesday after Bandila.

    Alfie Lorenzo
