Movie-TV board suspends ABS-CBN’s ‘Correspondents’

THE MOVIE AND Television Review and Cl######ification Board (MTRCB) has suspended the ABS-CBN documentary show “The Correspondents” for three consecutive weeks or three episodes.

The suspension was announced in a memorandum dated Aug. 15 and signed by lawyer Paulino Cases Jr., chair of the MTRCB Hearing and Adjudication Committee, and members Katherine Vilar and Ricardo de Leon.

The offending episode was “Ang Pinoy Rasta,” aired June 26, which showed a father and son smoking marijuana.

    Rastafari movement

The memo noted that the father even said smoking marijuana had no ill effects on his health.

Through their counsel, the show’s representatives ######erted that the docu was not about drug use, but about Rastafari, “a Jamaican religious practice adopted by some Filipinos as a way of life.”

In a phone interview, Luchi Cruz-Valdez, network head of Current Affairs, earlier told Inquirer Entertainment that smoking marijuana was an “intrinsic” part of the Rasta religion.

The network’s representatives, according to the memo, said the offending portion had not been done in a manner that showed marijuana smoking as enjoyable.

The board pointed out that Presidential Decree No. 1986 “clearly provides that the board … has the power to approve or disapprove, delete objectionable portions … which in [its] judgment … are objectionable for being immoral, indecent and contrary to law …”

Valdez told Inquirer on Tuesday that the network received a copy of the decision on Aug. 17. “That’s why we’re not airing the show tonight.”

In an official statement, the network reiterated: “ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs protests the suspension … [and] stands by its editorial judgment.”

Valdez added that the network had filed a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the suspension in the Court of Appeals on Friday (Aug. 18).

“We hope to get the TRO soon so we can air next Tuesday,” she said.

    MTRCB, kakasuhan ng ABS-CBN?

    Jojo Gabinete

    Re: The Correspondents

    Hay talaga, the MTRCB..
    Wala na bang magawa lately?
Considering that children are supposed to be asleep at this time, im sure di na ganoon dapat ka-paranoid sila.
Look at what they did to i-Witness. Ang labo di ba?

Problema, 3weeks ang suspensyon ng TC, compared sa i na isa lang ata. Anong kahulugan nito? May galit sila? Natatalo na ba ang show ng kabila? Gaya nga ng sabi ni Prof. Teodoro.. <sarcastically>"I mean eh, COME ON!"

    Korean Invasion on "The Correspondents"

This Tuesday, September 12, Ces Drilon examines the growing phenomenon of Koreans in the Philippines on The Correspondents. Koreans are now one of the largest and fastest growing groups of immigrants in the county, moving here for business, education (mainly English language lessons) and for a better quality of life.

Aside from known Korean imports such as K-dramas (TV series), K-pop (Korean pop music) and even actress Sandara Park, "Koreatowns" are also fast sprouting around the metropolis complete with restaurants, schools, business establishments and even churches. The documentary shows that while more and more Filipinos wish to leave the country in search of better lives abroad, some foreigners are all too happy to make the Philippines their home.

Ces Drilon gets to the root of this Korean invasion tonight on The Correspondents, airing on ABS-CBN right after Bandila.

    Garbage

    By Isah V. Red

What is the real status of the worsening problem of garbage in the Philippines? Know the answer tonight in The Correspondents, on ABS-CBN.

The government has allotted P7 billion to solve the problem with garbage. At the same time, seven thousand tons of garbage is being collected in the country every day. It has been said that within 30 years, the entire Metro Manila will be a dump of garbage. On the other hand, thousands of Filipinos make a living out of it. When and how can this dilemma be resolved? Is the government exerting enough effort and spending enough money to respond to this problem?

Ces Oreña Drilon investigates the real situation of garbage in the country. She looks into it’s positive and negative effects, and what can be done to put an end to its worsening condition.

The Correspondents airs Tuesday nights after Bandila, on ABS-CBN.

Wanting reform, they took up arms and lived in the mountains. Rebels, they were called then, associated with guns, violence and terror. But now, these former members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and New Peoples Army (NPA) are returning to the lives they once turned their backs on. Will they be welcomed with open arms by the society? Written and hosted by Abner Mercado, watch the inspiring stories of the rebel returnees on The Correspondents tonight, October 17.

Kumander Spider and the rest of his group were feared by people for they were willing to fight and kill for their principles. But when they accepted the chance to change their lives, they can now be seen working in one of the banana plantations in Maguindanao. Take a glance too, at the lives of former members of the New People’s Army in Zamboanga del Norte, who also accepted the government’s promise of a good future in exchange for their descent from the mountains. Visit the lives of these former rebels who are now living in abundance with their families.

Catch this story tonight on The Correspondents right after the evening news on Bandila.

    Buhay biyahero on the Correspondents

We see them on the streets, lugging huge bags and furniture, selling their wares here and there. They knock on our doors to offer a glimpse of the things they peddle. But what do we know of the "biyaheros" and their business of selling products on installment? Get to know them on The Correspondents on Tuesday, October 24.

How hard is it to vend on installment? Cabinets, cots, cookware and other household items are peddled by these men and women, who struggle with the weight and bulk of these items day by day. They go door to door and often times are turned away by the residents. And when they do make a sale, their job does not end there for they have to return to that house weekly to get at least a hundred pesos as ‘hulog’ on the item that was sold. Is all their time and effort worth it?

Bernadette Sembrano spent some time with these "biyaheros" to find out what their life as peddlers are like. Don’t miss this episode of The Correspondents, October 24, Tuesday right after Bandila.

The truth on Alzheimer’s in The Correspondents

For elderly people, being forgetful is quite common. But to forget about their experiences and some parts of their past – is it due to aging, or a symptom of a serious illness called Alzheimer’s disease? This November 7, Ces Oreña-Drilon goes in depth on the disease that’s afflicting the elderly on The Correspondents.

Elderly people usually pass on the wisdom they have acquired through the years. They brag about what they have been through, cherishing their precious memories. But what if these memories deteriorate and eventually disappear?

Meet Lolo Rufino, who has forgotten his actual age, Lola Ruth, who doesn’t remember her children’s names, and Lola Suzanna, who believes that she is still a kid. Are they just going through a phase of ‘second childhood’ or are they demonstrating symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease?

What will happen to aged people inflicted with Alzheimer’s if their families could not give them sufficient time and understanding? Join Correspondent Ces as she explores all about Alzheimer’s disease in The Correspondents, this Tuesday after Bandila, on ABS-CBN.
