Manila 10s rugby festival
Rugby players and fans from around the world converge in Manila soon for the Manila 10s tournament. A full slate of 32 teams is booked for the 10-a-side format games to be played at the Nomad Sports Club in suburban Merville Park, Metro Manila, over the weekend of March 25-26. Apart from the competitive rugby, the tournament has a fiesta party atmosphere for the spectators. Entrance is free and there are sponsors’ boxes, plenty of food and drinks, a band, Filipino dancing, children’s activities and parties each night.
The tournament opener is the big Manila 10s lunch on Friday March 24 in the Philippine Plaza hotel ballroom – a drawn-out lunch with flowing drinks, guest speeches and interviews, rugby trivia contest, competitions, raffles and memorabilia auction. Guest rugby stars this year are Nick Farr-Jones representing Australia’s Wallabies, John Bentley from England and Stu Wilson for New Zealand’s All Blacks.
Joining the lunch costs US$55 per person – or $1,200 for a corporate box which includes catering for 10 people with a fancier menu with a choice of wine or champagne, an exclusive TV monitor and waiter, in a box decorated in team colors, and promotional acknowledgements.
