QUOTE(russel08 @ Feb 9 2006, 01:12 PM) You have to look at the big picture bro. This you can't do if you look only at isolated cases. You can't say for example that China's economy isn't growing because Choi Ku Kie and his 200 neighbors can't find a job in thier hellhole province. Furthermore, is poverty the main reason why nurses want to migrate to the US? I could give you a list of rich people that want to migrate to the US>

The nurses are not isolated cases. The glaring fact is, more and more Filipinos are trying to leave the country just to give their families a chance to survive, to have something decent to eat, to be able to study and have a semblance of a future. And the reason: our government could not even give them decent jobs here in our country, despite their grandiose pronouncements about how well our economy is "growing" ! Strong Republic ? The NEDA even classifies people who work only once a week as "fully-employed". tsk tsk...
You are in a sense right. China's economy may be growing, statistically that is, but then does it make you wonder if "growth" as defined by our NEDA econoquacks and their counterparts abroad actually benefit the people? As your example shows, two hundred hungry and unemployed in a province more likely reflects the situation in china's other provinces since there is no reason for us to believe that it is limited to just a single neighborhood, or a single province for that matter. Growth may not exactly be = to jobs and a sense of well-being.
An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

QUOTE(Gerry65 @ Feb 11 2006, 03:52 AM) NO. We already have enough taxes to centend with. The problem is the inneficiency of our tax collection, and not because we don't have enough taxes. The key is better collection of existing taxes, and not the imposition of new ones.
To be blunt, E-vat is actually for the long-term benefit of our creditors, the multilateral banks. where do you think the bulk of this money would go - DEBT SERVICING. What the government should do is to temporarily cease payment of our foreign debt for a few years at least, while we use the money to get back on our feet. This long-running, ######, senseless policy of taxing and taxing the populace just to please our foreign creditors to the detriment of the population is treason to the filipino people and has got to stop if we want to survive.
Pardon me for my candor but I need to get this out to everyone.
Yes, most of these taxes go to debt paying from the time of Marcos, to Aquino, to Ramos and it trickles down to the present administration. And other 'highly-priced' decisions. Read these articles and you'll know how much the Philippines owe the World Bank and the other foreign creditors, how it came about and who are the instigators. Though these are views of different people not of the Phil. government. http://www.cadtm.org/article.php3?id_article=1732http://www.focusweb.org/philippines/content/view/92/6/http://multinationalmonitor.org/hyper/issu.../economics.htmlhttp://www.pcij.org/stories/2002/ramos.htmlhttp://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/54a/138.htmlhttp://www.txtmania.com/trivia/social.phphttp://www.monthlyreview.org/1299scip.htmhttp://www.atimes.com/atimes/Southeast_Asia/FJ05Ae01.htmlAnd can this 'cure' of the Phil. situation be beneficial: http://www.forbes.com/markets/feeds/afx/20...afx2194198.html
