Bago mag-Pasko, it will be heard sa radio at telebisyon.

"Christmas here has more love, intensity and family participation," sabi niya. "So I am enjoying my Christmas here though the years."

Children's Village.

The many sides of Sarah Geronimo in her major concert

Brimming with talent and oozing with charm, Sarah Geronimo is undoubtedly one of the most promising young stars today. Even with just three years of Pop Stardom under her belt, she has received numerous accolades and has taken part of countless concerts both here and abroad. The most recent of which was no less than her first major concert at the Araneta Coliseum.

Dubbed as "The Other Side," Sarah’s very successful concert showcased the various facets of her personality. She’s an old soul who can sing Celine Dion’s "If I Could" and Mariah Carey’s "Through the Rain" with such emotion. She’s an 80’s baby who can moonwalk to "Billie Jean" alaMichael Jackson. She’s a budding belter who can hit the high notes of Whitney Houston’s "The Greatest Love of All" with Songbird - Regine Velasquez. She’s a young vixen who can croon and shimmy ala-Thalia. And yet she remains to be a child at heart who admits that she loves Jollibee and proves this by dancing with the bee himself to the tune of her pop hit "Sa Iyo."

The jam-packed concert is the absolute proof that the Pop Princess has indeed come a long way from her humble beginnings. These days, she is a multi-awarded recording artist, a versatile actress and an engaging host. And now, she can add concert queen in-the-making to her growing list of achievements. This is why her Jollibee family is behind her all the way, believing in her exceptional talent and supporting her many endeavors.

"We’ve always believed that Sarah is capable of great things and that she is able to bring happiness to so many people by sharing her wonderful voice. Her Jollibee family couldn’t be any prouder of Sarah now that she just pulled off her first major concert at no less than the Big Dome," said Ms. Carol Estacio, Jollibee Marketing Manager.

With her wit, charisma and undeniable talent, Sarah Geronimo is bound to conquer more hearts and captivate bigger audiences. Because like a beautiful diamond, there are more sides to this precious gem that the world has yet to see.

SARAH Geronimo: Kids look up to her

Editor's Note: Published on page A2-1 of the October 16, 2005 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

CHRISTMAS STARTED EARLY FOR singing champion Sarah Geronimo.

A long-cherished wish was fulfilled recently when her first solo concert, “The Other Side,” at the Araneta Coliseum turned out to be an SRO event—despite malfunctioning air-conditioners.

Another dream-come-true is her hosting gig on ABS-CBN’s “Little Big Star,” where she acts as big sister to the young contestants. After all, she was just like them before she hit it big on “Star for a Night.”

Sarah pushes the wish-fulfillment streak via “Gift Love on Christmas: Isang Milyong Pamaskong Handog ng Surf,” the jingle of which, “Ang Bango ng Pasko,” she has recorded for the corporate sponsor, Unilever.

The project is a unique raffle that allows consumers to win P1 million and the chance to contribute to SOS Children’s Village.

Says Howard D. Belton, Unilever chair and chief executive officer of Unilever: “Christmas is for the young. But what about the poor kids who don’t get any Christmas gifts?” chose Sarah to be the voice of its Christmas campaign because she is a positive role model, says Benjie Yap, marketing manager. “Kids look up to her.”

Agrees Darlene Chiong, senior brand manager, “Aside from her youthful exuberance, her life story is inspiring.”

What convinced you to sign on?

I’ve always dreamed of recording my own original Christmas song. I used to sing Christmas songs with my father [Delfin]… and go caroling with other neighborhood kids. Now, through this song, I also get to help orphans. It’s a great feeling. I didn’t even have to do much. I just sang.

Christmas must be your favorite time of the year.

Yes! It’s the season for sharing and loving.

Have you met the kids at SOS?

We rehearsed the song a while back [for the project’s launch]. Some of them had stage fright; I told them to just smile! I’d like to have more bonding sessions with them.

Do you identify with the young contestants on “Little Big Star?"

I see myself in the little things they do before the competition—like covering their necks with hankies and avoiding cold drinks.

    Do you give them tips?

I remind them not to talk too much before a show and not to give their all during rehearsals. Pag birit agad (if they hit the high notes right away), their voice could get hoarse.

How did you feel when you were being pitted against Regine Velasquez [who hosted “Star for a Night” and now hosts “Pinoy Pop Superstar”]?

Some people said Miss Reg was mad at me. [When] she guested in my Araneta concert, I asked her about it. She said I shouldn’t listen to intrigues, and that I shouldn’t worry because she herself was “deaf” to those.

What was that first Araneta concert like?

I couldn’t sleep the night before. I didn’t expect such a big turnout. I sang “Ang Bango ng Pasko” for the first time there. I like singing it live because it’s not a birit song, and it has a beautiful message. At least, that was one quiet moment in the concert. Funny thing was, the air-conditioning had conked out. But after the Christmas song, it suddenly came back on. “Ang Bango ng Pasko” will be part of my live concert CD and will also be the carrier song of an all-star Christmas compilation Unilever is doing with Viva Records. I’ll also sing it in Surf’s “Paskoncert sa Pasiklab” in Philcoa on Dec. 17.

    Sarah loves Guess

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sarah Geronimo has always been a lover of Guess. Her mom bought her a Guess bag in her favorite color – pink – which she totes around in her shows, TV guestings and other commitments. The top clothing brand brings out the youthfulness in her, making Sarah even more appealing to fans who copy her every move and even fashion style.

No wonder Guess gladly sponsored Sarah’s sold-out first major concert at the Araneta Coliseum recently. Sarah mounted the stage in a pair of Guess jeans jazzed up with sequins by Rajo Laurel himself. She wore a white Guess T-shirt for the rousing finale number.

    A LITTLE BIT
    By Remy Umerez
    People's Journal

BY next week, a beautiful voice from a 15-year-old IS student will fill the air as top radio stations play her carrier single "Something Like That." What a captivating voice and you will gasp and wonder whether she is only 15 as Ivory Music claims.

Her name is Kim Flores and how she landed at Ivory Music (and not with Star Records which her manager Boy Abunda has access to) is another tale to tell.

Abunda's original plan is for Kim to join one of these singing tilts much like Sarah Geronimo for the masa consumption since she is totally unknown. But Kim won't pass because she is underage.

For not joining any contest comes as a blessing in disguise, observes a record man who believes that the birit days doesn't sit well with the listening public anymore.

He further observes that only Sarah has the staying power because she is the original champion. Also, Sarah charms everyone with her simplicity and wonderful PR.

When the late Rio Diaz produced an album of inspirational songs, one of the featured voices belongs to Kim who must be 14 then. When Ivory Music executives heard it, thus began the long negotiations between Abunda and Ivory. It was like a courtship where in the end, Abunda finally said yes.

A showstopper in the CD is Kim's versions of "Fantasy." It has an intro like no other where Kim displays just how powerful the range of her voice can go and the result is a listening experience that will leave you stunned for a couple of minutes. We try to imagine the song in a full production number and we bet it will be a sensation.

Kim can be what the lyrics of the song dictates her to be: wistful, loving, longing and she is only 15.

She can make birit if she chooses to but Kim is not about to compete with Sarah or Rachelle Ann Go.

She is here to make her own mark and her debut album reveals it so.

But showbusiness being what it is — controversial and full of intrigues— will find a way to make it appear that Kim is the biggest threat Sarah has to face.

    Ogie's greatest hits

For lovers all over, Ogie Alcasid's "Ikaw Lamang" (the movie theme of "Dubai") has become their national anthem. It was sung by Gary Valenciano but Ogie renders his own version featured in "Ogie's Greatest Hits" album, a collection of (what else?), his biggest hits. Some of Ogie's best love songs are "Kailangan Kita," "Pangarap Ko ang Ibigin Ka" plus "Hanggang Ngayon," a duet with Regine Velasquez.

The CD contains his greatest hits during his stay with Viva which is releasing the album.

    Re: Sarah Geronimo

    Sarah’s early Christmas gift

    By Gabby Libarios

In the mad, mad world of show business, where every player is as opportunistic as the next politician, very often do you encounter individuals who put principle before expedience.

One such person is pop singing sensation Sarah Geronimo, a young girl with a big talent and a bigger heart.

Since that golden moment at the Araneta Coliseum when Sarah was declared the first ever winner of Star of the Night in 2002, manna from heaven has been falling down on her in sheets, the most recent of which is her highly successful, pack-to-the-rafters concert at the Big Dome last Sept. 30.

So the teen princess, who now has her own show on ABS-CBN called Little Big Star, strongly feels that it is just right to give something back to society as a sign of her overflowing gratitude.

And Unilever Philippines has the right fit for her.

To highlight detergent brand Surf’s ongoing raffle promo “Gift Love on Christmas: Isang Milyong Pamaskong Handog ng Surf,” the corporation has tapped Sarah to sing “Ang Bango ng Pasko.”

“I was really happy and excited when I found out that I was going to record a Christmas song,” says Sarah, whose dream is to have a Christmas song she can call her own. “It has been my dream since I was a child.”

Composed by Mike Villegas and written by Chit Datu, this Filipino Christmas song is redolent of hope, love, and the general lighthearted feeling of the holidays.

According to senior brand manager Darlene Chiong, Sarah is the perfect choice for this new project. “There are lots of singers that we thought of, but it was really Sarah Geronimo who stood out from the rest. She was our choice from the beginning.”

Villegas, the composer commissioned by Unilever for the song, feels the same sentiment. “Young and vibrant, Sarah embodies the youthful spirit of Christmas,” he says. “Christmas is the season of giving. Especially for the less fortunate kids, the holidays bring warmth and hope for a better life. If ever we forget what Christmas is about, all we need is to take a look at the children around, especially those in need.”

Initially, this venture was hatched as part of Unilever’s yearly gift-giving activity for cause-oriented groups and other foundations. “We thought of this project because we wanted to multiply our aid by thousands,” says marketing manager Benjie Yap. “And we wanted our loyal customers to part of the giving as well. The more entries they send, the more donation goes to our beneficiary.” On top of this, an early Christmas gift of P1M awaits the lucky winner of the raffle.

Surf’s ongoing raffle promo is solely for the benefit of SOS Children’s Village, an international child care agency, which has been providing long-term residential-type child care program, including free education, for less fortunate kids since 1967. At present, the foundation houses 800 youth in seven children’s villages in the country: Lipa, Tacloban, Calbayog, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, and Alabang.

Aside from the P1M financial aid to SOS, Chiong notes, Surf has committed to donating additional P10,000 for every P100,000 entries from the promo. “The nice thing about the promo is each consumer has the chance to contribute without shelling out any extra money. The entries are their means to help,” continues Chiong.

The promo mechanics are quite simple. “All that’s required is for entries to be accompanied by wrappers of any Surf variant. Place these wrappers along with a piece of paper, with your name, address, telephone, and signature in a white legal-size envelope with the promo title,” Chiong explains. “Drop entries in drop boxes at selected supermarkets, groceries, and public markets nationwide. Entries may be also be sent to Unilever Philippines, 1351 UN Avenue, Ermita, Manila until Dec. 3.”

Gift Love promotion culminates on Dec. 17 at the Paskong Pasiklab in Philcoa, Quezon City, where Sarah, together with other special guests, spearheads a free concert called Paskoncert sa Pasiklab. Announcement of the P1M winner will also take place during the event.

“I am really happy that they (Unilever) gave me this opportunity,” beams Sarah. “For this rare chance, I can inspire and bring meaning to the most wonderful and special event of the year.”
