Titik Pilipino Album Review by Resty Odon
Over half of the songs off this album are professions of undying love and the willingness to wait for reciprocation. Soon enough, the title song (Loving You Now) plays, and it gives an explanation for all that wistful longing and waiting. This lineup of songs turns out to be a paean for love recently lost. The set ends with two remorseful numbers (a cover of R. Goodrum’s Doors and Magpahanggang Wakas), which give away some intriguing clues: regrets, little betrayals...This album is apparently meant for those trying to win back someone they’ve lost because of their own fault.
Erik no doubt has an excellent voice, but the problem is, he has yet to carve a very strong identity. I believe he should strive for a far more distinct sound and style to get ahead of the competition. To be more blunt about it, he should wean himself away from the Martin Nievera school of balladry, which, I’m afraid, is Martin Nievera’s signature alone.
Maybe it’s just me, but I wonder how Erik would fare if he lightened up and tried fast numbers and out-and-out pop/dance tunes? I’m afraid his style of building up his voice (from very soft to very loud) is less about heartfelt emotions gleaned from real-world experience than about applying the techniques he has learned. In this sophomore offering, I wanted to see Erik act his age and sing more lighthearted, carefree songs that may give him more edge and show versatility. Maybe, he is not yet that inclined towards this phase, and his fans as well, but it’s an idea worth trying.
Having said all that, this second album is not bad, though, because it has the artist’s personal touch nonetheless, backed up by Star Records’ showbiz clout: It contains a lineup Erik himself is reported to have selected, not to mention certain compositions by Martin Nievera (Mystery) and Ogie Alcasid (Bakit Ba Iniibig Ka), and one song Erik had a hand in writing (Kung Maaalala Mo). A tempered version of Regine Velasquez, too, graces this album by appearing with Erik in a lovely duet (in Bakit Ba Iniibig Ka composed by Ogie Alcasid).
