“MY PARENTS say I was singing before I could read or write. When I was 4 years old, they tell me, they would turn on the radio and I would croon along. They say I could do Sharon Cuneta and Whitney Houston until early puberty when my voice changed.”
That was Erik Santos, one of the country’s top young singers today, reminiscing.
“My dad’s aunt, whom I called Tita Lola, trained me to vocalize and project. My dad had a band, a combo as they called it back then. At 6, I knew how to sing with the multiplex. I loved singing at barangay affairs, house parties. I even joined the church choir. When I was 8, my family urged me to join a singing contest during the Malabon fiesta. It was traumatic; I forgot one line and was so embarrassed.”
Erik stopped singing altogether until age 13. In the mean time, his voice had matured and he started doing Martin Nievera songs. At this point, Erik decided he would specialize in pop and ballads.
While studying Dentistry, he continued to sing. After winning ABS-CBN’s “Star in a Million” search in 2004, he forgot college altogether.
Erik is currently one of Backroom’s hottest talents. His manager, Boy Abunda, even produced a show for him at the Araneta Coliseum, with Ai-Ai de las Alas. He’s just released a new album called “I’ll Never Go.”
