Sound Check Ayen and Raymond at their best in Teatrino series
Jojo Panaligan
Sound proof:
#1: ‘The Best Of Us’True to its title, "The Best of Us" series of Ayen Laurel and Raymond Lauchengco finally cast these two as the versatile vocalists that they are. We watched opening night when the audience was treated to well thought-of and exceptionally delivered repertoire of standards, broadways, OPM and jazz.
We say "finally" because it’s not what most people expect. For so long, Raymond had been known as "that 80’s singer;" stigmatized so for his hit songs in that decade as "Farewell" and "So It’s You" now regarded OPM classics.
Ayen, meanwhile, is supposedly the middle-of-the road chanteuse who could carry notes songs but not one capable of essaying complex songs.
In reality, Ayen and Raymond just needed the right canvass to show much more. In tandem with Danny Tan, musical director of the show, both broke people’s biases against them in numbers like "What A Wonderful World," "Ugoy Ng Duyan," and a Legrand Suite for Ayen; and "Somos Novios," "As If We Never Said Goodbye" and "Summertime" for Raymond.
In the above listed, Ayen exhibited range not merely vocally but feelingswise. Her renditions of "What A Wonderful World" and "Ugoy Ng Duyan," though technically devoid of "moments," had an enrapt audience still as a whisper. Ayen delivered the songs like one telling simple stories already absorbing for its universality that no gimmicks were necessary. It helped that Danny’s musical arrangements for the two were so down-to-earth that Ayen’s voice and message became paramount.
The Legrand Suite, a big favorite by divas some seasons back, assumed a different color in Ayen’s hand. What she lacked in range, she more than made up for in emotional attack. For about eight minutes, she sung through a labyrinth of reminiscing, romance and reasoning in such Legrand canons as "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" and "How Do You Keep The Music Playing." It was exhilarating musical excursion that made the journey, indeed, more exciting than the destination.
Raymond did not leave the audience feeling hanging despite his singing only one original hit song ("So It’s You"). By substituting numbers that were as astoundingly sung, he had people thinking he never should’ve left the scene in the first place. We don’t know for certain if he’s really that good a photographer since we’re not familiar with his works. But as for singing, he is in the same league as Martin Nievera and Basil Valdez.
The Broadwaytune "As If We Never Said Goodbye" is Raymond’s tour-deforce performance in the show. With hands shaking, voice soaring and eyes glistening (from holding back tears, we feel) he renders double meaning to the song.
That is, when Raymond sings "Tonight I feel as if we never said goodbye," he’s not just doing some love song but addressing his audience who have welcomed him back with open arms.
People also enjoyed the duets and production numbers. With the two’s predilection for theatrics, even blocking onstage assumed meaning particularly in "Broken Vow." Here the two are in the same space but hardly look at each other. When they do, it’s with blank expressions. Indeed, they are in the same boat but now no longer see eye-to-eye, thus, so far apart.
Production-value-wise, "The Best of Us" is about understated class. With several costume changes either in monochromatic or complementary colors for the two courtesy of top designers; set design and lights reminiscent of movies from the 50’s that cast soft stardust in the eyes; musical arrangement that don’t stray far from the original, hence, stronger in bringing on nostalgia; and properly written script versus nonsense ad libs, no one will leave "The Best of Us" feeling short-changed.
"The Best of Us" continues its run at Teatrino on Oct.21. http://www.mb.com.ph/ENTR2006101677125.html

| Raymond Lauchengco’s blessing in disguise |
 |
Balladeer Raymond Lauchengco confessed that he stopped performing about a decade ago out of frustration.
"I was frustrated because I was self-centered. I had no purpose other than to do as I pleased. It never occurred to me that my gifts were given to me to glorify God and give others pleasure," Raymond wrote in an essay titled "Singing a new Song." Raymond’s essay is among several inspiring stories featured in the inspirational book "Blessings in Disguise," which was edited by his wife, Mia Rocha Lauchengco. "I was only concerned with my pleasure so I took His gifts and threw them away. It would have been a very sad story indeed except for one thing—God did not give up on me. He did the impossible and turned things around," said the singer known for his signature hits "I Need You Back," "So It’s You," and "Farewell." More than a hundred fascinating and personal accounts of miracles disguised as unfortunate circumstances pack the pages of "Blessings in Disguise." Raymond is but one of several personalities in entertainment, business, government and the arts who contributed inspiring essays on coping with failure, disappointment, heartaches and loss. Multi-awarded singer Dulce, in her essay "Educated by the best teacher," tells of how she needed to stop schooling at a young age due to poverty. Gary Valenciano ("An Unlikely Couple") talks about the difficulties he and his wife, Angeli Pangilinan, had to overcome during their courtship. Actress Iza Calzado ("Lost and Found") recalls how a death in her family pushed her to take a step towards a career in show biz. Princess Punzalan-Field ("My search for a father") shares how she rekindled her relationship with her father, the la te broadcast journalist Orly Punzalan, who reappeared after 13 years of absence. "Blessings in Disguise" is the third volume of the "Coincidence or Miracle?" series compiled by Butch Jimenez and Flor Gozon Tarriela. The book also features stories of stories of show biz personalities Donita Rose, Champagne Morales and Ayen Munji-Laurel; National Artist for Literature Alejandro Roces, artists Raul Isidro and Jose Blanco; business leaders Felipe Gozon of GMA 7, Butch Bonoan of Better Than Ice Cream, AIM Triple A Alumni awardee Ed Limon, environmentalist Odette Alcantara; as well as garden extraordinaires Sonya Garcia of Sonya’s Secret Garden and Bamboo Garden’s Carolina "Kay" Jimenez. Tarriela, who wrote the essay "Hopeless Cook," is the chair of the Philippine National Bank (PNB) and former undersecretary of finance. She holds the distinction of being the first lady vice-president of Citibank. Jimenez ("Every loss is a stepping stone") is currently the president of the TOYM (Ten Outstanding Young Men) Foundation and senior vice president of the Retail Business Group of PLDT (Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company). "Blessings in Disguise" is now available at Powerbooks, Philippine Bible Society outlets in UN Sta. Mesa and Cebu, Sonya’s Garden in Tagaytay and at all OMF outlets for P320. For bulk orders, contact Cita at 867-1055 and 0906-5064764. |

Raymond Lauchengco in "Classic Romance 2" Jan. 24, 2006 Premier balladeer Raymond Lauchengco brings back the soundtrack of an old world romance in his Valentine concert dubbed "Classic Romance 2" at Teatrino, Greenhills Shopping Complex, Manila on Feb. 13 and 14. A sequel of sorts to Raymond's highly successful Valentine's show held last year, "Classic Romance 2" features a more varied repertoire highlighted by a big band sound. As in last year's show, Raymond's sister, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo and good friend Ayen Munji-Laurel will be his special guests.
"I'm definitely an old-fashioned guy. I've always wanted to bring back the era where love is communicated without the aid of text messaging or electronic greeting cards," says Raymond. "Classic Romance 2" features an 8-piece band complete with live blowing and rhythm sections under musical director Vic Oria. The concert will showcase musical genres that have a genuine affinity to Raymond—standards, Spanish songs, and Broadway love songs. "This is the music I've grown to love through the years. The first time I sang standards in a live concert, I felt right at home—they speak of a gentler, more elegant era, when songs were simply romantic. In Broadway pieces one can find a whole romantic narrative," adds Raymond. Raymond also will be singing hit songs that defined him as a singer in the '80s -- "So It's You," "Farewell," -- among others, but perhaps for the very last time. "The concert marks a turning point for me, where my audience and I can bid farewell to the songs that were very good to me and say hello to who I've become as a performer." This means that the Teatrino audience will be treated to the 'new' Raymond via a special sneak preview of his soon-to-be released album of iconic '80s songs (such as "Just Got Lucky," "Together In Electric Dreams," "Walking on Sunshine") interpreted with a big band sound. With "Classic Romance 2" staged at a relatively small venue like Teatrino, Raymond promises a warmer and a more intimate evening. "I'd like for each member of the audience to feel like I am singing solely for them. I really believe that music is strong and potent enough to go straight to the heart." For tickets, please call Ticketworld at (632) 891-9999 or Teatrino at 721-6726 or 721-0635. For sponsorship inquiries, please contact (63)917-5334206.

Raymond sings for the Bagets APRYLLE LIABRES (Contributor)
26 February 2007
THE MOVIE Bagets jump-started Raymond Lauchengco's career and brought him so many wonderful blessings. The same goes for the other co-stars of the movie, including Eula Valdez and William Martinez. And because they’ve been so richly blessed, Raymond,
Eula, William, his wife Yayo Aguila and the other co-stars of the movie have joined forces to put up the Bagets Foundation. The foundation will be one of the beneficiaries of Raymond’s forthcoming concert series, Classic Romance 2: Walking on Sunshine to go onstage at the Teatrino, Promenade, Greenhills Shopping Complex on March 15, 22 and 29 and April 12 and 19. "Our primary thrust is to put kids and young adults aged 12 to 21 through school, and hopefully place them in jobs when they graduate. It’s just our small way of giving back, now that we feel we’ve come full circle and are in a better position to help others," Raymond explains. In Classic Romance 2: Walking on Sunshine, Raymond will have an 8-piece band, complete with a horns and rhythm section under musical director Vic Oria. The concert showcases musical genres that have a genuine affinity for Raymond —standards, Spanish love songs, and Broadway love songs. "This is the music I’ve grown to love through the years. The first time I sang standards in a live concert, I felt right at home —they speak of a gentler, more elegant era, when songs were simply romantic. In Broadway pieces, one can find a whole romantic narrative," he adds. As in last year’s concert, Raymond will be joined by his sister Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo and good friend Ayen Munji-Laurel. The concert also highlights the special sneak preview of Raymond’s soon-to-be released album of iconic 80’s songs, such as Just Got Lucky (which, incidentally, was the theme song of Bagets), Together In Electric Dreams and Walking on Sunshine, interpreted with a big band twist. "We thought this kind of album would be fun to do. This is also music that I grew up with, and I love the big band standards, so I felt, why not combine the two to come up with a new type of concept album?" explains Raymond. http://khaleejtimes.com/CityHome.asp?xfile=data/citytimes/2007/February/citytimes_February208.xml§ion=citytimes&col=

Raymond Lauchengco’s new soundFINAL CUT Edsel-Thadeus O. Lorete03/02/2007 It was not exactly fate that made Raymond Lauchengco pursue his singing career once again. His unwavering love for music and entertaining urged him to record a concept album, which the singer is introducing to fans through his concerts at Teatrino, Greenhills, in San Juan. “Bagets helped me launch a showbiz and a recording career,” Lauchengco reflected. He realizes how much has changed in the recording industry since the ’80s. “This is why, despite my love for my music, I have decided to pursue a concept album myself.” The concept Raymond has in mind is more Broadway than pop. “We toyed with the idea of recording an ’80s pop song into a sort of the Frank Sinatra tune,” he said. The concept sounded odd because ’80s pop music was built to veer away from oldies music. But we gamely decided to sit and listen how this will sound differently coming from a guy who was partly responsible for many of the hit music of the 1980s. Raymond started out with a risky tracking of Wham’s dance music “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” followed by another dance music, Katrina and the Waves’ “I’m Walking on Sunshine.” Both songs are fast-paced and yet Raymond sang them smoothly, comparable to Dean Martin’s record that left the Former First Lady Imelda Marcos in tears. He sang it without wailing like Eddie Mercado or Diomedes Maturan would do. This is not saying Raymond, who is already in his 40s, will start sounding like a love boat entertainer. He simply gave ’80s pop a whole new perspective for everyone to enjoy. “I would like to say goodbye to my old hits and, hopefully, bring on this whole new concept, which I really love singing.” This will be Raymond’s final concert this March before finishing the recording of his yet untitled concept album, something the singer jokingly proposed to interested producers from the audience. “I am looking for someone who could help distribute and market this album. It is a great concept put together by world-class musicians like myself.” If all goes well, Raymond hinted that it will be a welcome beginning for him to sing more Broadway and the West End pieces. Part of the proceeds from Raymond’s concerts will shoulder the scholarship of the Bagets Foundation, a humanitarian organization organized by actors Eula Valdez, Aga Muhlach, William Martinez, Ramon Christopher, Yayo Aguila-Martinez, Raymond, Herbert Bautista and those who were part of Bagets, which helps financially-challenged individuals.
