    The ultimate Valentine guide

    By Rowell B. Capuz
LOVE is all around us this month. It’s the time of the year when women take time to smell the flowers (and taste the chocolates, too!) and guys prepare for that special dinner date. But love is for everybody. Whether you are single or having the time of your life with a loved one, there are many reasons to celebrate Valentine’s Day. As the late John Lennon put it, “All you need is love!”

Now if you still have no plans come Feb. 14, we provide you with the best hangout places in town. Here are some of them:

    Valentine concerts

    *snipped*

Meanwhile, Raymond Lauchengco returns to the concert scene as he stages Classic Romance, his forthcoming Valentine’s Day concert.

With Classic Romance being held at the Rockwell Tent, Lauchengco promises a warmer, more intimate atmosphere that he has come to favor as a performer. And he looks forward to singing with guests Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo and Ayen Laurel at the concert.

“Valentine’s Day is all about romance. It’s the world in love; the world actually stops to celebrate love. It is, perhaps, the ultimate human emotion—think of how many have written about it, sung about it, cried about it, have been joyous about it, and died for it,” Lauchengco says, “and I hope that I, and the songs, will be able to communicate what love is at its very core.”

Tickets are priced at Php 1,500 (patron) and Php 2,000 (VIP with cocktails from 7-8:30 p.m.). Tickets are available at TicketWorld (891-9999) or contact (0919) 681-0552.

Raymond Lauchengco will spend the evening of Valentine’s Day performing love songs at the Rockwell Tent. The show is entitled Classic Romance and features as guests Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo and Ayen Munji-Laurel. Tickets priced at Patron P1,500 and VIP P2,000 are available at TicketWorld outlets. Proceeds will go to the House of Refuge Foundation.

Raymond has been performing for over 20 years and has already proven his versatility as a singer. So expect a concert with truly beautiful music. It also helps that most of his songs will be filled with memories like Saan Darating ang Umaga, I Need You Back or Farewell. These were originally recorded for movies he starred in some years back but have remained huge favorites until now. In fact, Farewell, which was used in the landmark film Bagets, was recently re-issued as a single by Vicor.

    Re: Raymond Lauchengco

    Lauchengco releases second single

EVEN in the thick of preparations for his romantic Valentine show, “Classic Romance” happening tomorrow (Feb. 14), 8 p.m., at the Rockwell Tent in Rockwell, Makati City, supreme balladeer Raymond Lauchengco has taken time out to release the second single, “Farewell” off his fast-selling latet album under Vicor Music Corp.

“Farewell,” easily one of the songs associated with the matinee idol of the 80s, talks about bidding farewell to a life of exuberance and youth characterized by the people who walked that life with him. “Farewell” is one, if not the only one, of the much-played songs in graduations in every school everywhere and its release this month comes very timely. Once more, “Farewell” is being predicted to emerge as the national anthem of this year’s graduates, touching their hearts with the sincerity of the lyrics.

The video of “Farewell” was premiered a couple of weeks back in The Podium and the response of the crowd was very encouraging. Raymond’s new album under Vicor Music, “Raymond Lauchengco,” a compilation of his old hits like “I Need You Back,” “So It’s You,” “Saan Darating ang Umaga,” among many other hits, is now nearing the gold mark and with the release of the second single, there will be no doubt that he will soon be clinching the citation fast enough. The first single off that album is “Save Me a Dream” which also earned praises when it was released in August of last year.

In Raymond’s Valentine show, he will be joined by special guests Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo and Ayen Munji-Laurel. Musical direction is by Jun Latonio, while stage direction is by Roxanne Lapus, Raymond’s long-time manager. Expect a repertoire of great classics, standards, Broadway, Spanish songs, and even OPM.

Like Randy, compilation din ng kanyang old hits ang album like "I Need You Back," "So It’s You," "Saan Darating Ang Umaga" at iba pang kanta.

Siyanga pala, kasama rin sa album ni Raymond ang mga kantang I Need You Back, So It’s You at Saan Darating Ang Umaga.

Night of Broadway hits, OPM and familiar humor
    By B.C. King
    The Philippine Star 03/18/2006

In what was probably the best performance of his career yet, Raymond Lauchengco serenaded the distinguished (and quite packed) audience at the Rockwell Tent during his Valentine concert, Classic Romance, who in turn honored him with two well-deserved standing ovations for his renditions of romantic standards, Broadway tunes, and his own signature ballads.

As most are acquainted with Raymond’s more mainstream OPM ballads, many were amazed at the range of his vocals and his consummate ability to cross over to different genres in the more than two hours of superb singing. His skill and talent as a powerful, moving singer should place him as one of the country’s first-rate performers. These qualities were marvelously on display as he exceptionally interpreted classic love songs and engaged in an amiable rapport with the delighted audience, among them former First Lady Imelda Marcos, jeweler Benjamin Yap, collector Dr. Teyet Pascual, publisher Isagani Yambot, ABS-CBN corporate hotshot Bong Agustin, PR man Louie Cruz, and Sony Ericsson distributors Leo and Linda Villalon.

His excellent renditions were backed up by a finely-tuned band directed by Jun Latonio. Raymond began with a string of standards, crooning such classics as Come Fly With Me, Beyond the Sea and The Way You Look Tonight. A duet of The Very Thought Of You with the resplendent and charming Ayen Munji-Laurel showed a comfortable, fun rapport between the two friends whose voices blended beautifully.

A nice touch was the sweetly nostalgic segment that chronicled Raymond’s hits throughout his career. His first recording, and his first hit, I Need You Back, ushered in the suite of movie themes Raymond recorded throughout the years, with no less than Bagets cast members William Martinez, Yayo Aguila, Ramon Christopher, Cheska Iñigo and Eula Valdez joining him on stage, reminiscing with him and even singing Farewell with him.

A Broadway music segment further showcased Raymond’s vocal power as he interpreted song excerpts from popular musicals like West Side Story, Phantom of the Opera and South Pacific. There was a charming moment when his sister, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, regaled the audience with anecdotes about family and growing up and Raymond’s initiation into musical theater. It was a delightful segment full of familiar humor and engaging banter that further added to the warm ambience of the intimate concert setting.

A remarkable surprise was a medley of Spanish love songs, and though potentially risky as it is likely that most of the audience were unfamiliar with the language (though it is Raymond’s first language), it is to Raymond’s credit as a performer that his skillful and effortless rendition kept it far from seeming misplaced – proven by the ecstatic applause the segment received.

If his bravura performance at his Valentine concert, Classic Romance, is any indication, Raymond’s comeback will be nothing short of astounding.

(Raymond will have a repeat of Classic Romance on March 31 at the Music Museum with guests Ayen Munji-Laurel and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo. Tickets are priced at P1,200, P1,000, and P800 and available at TicketWorld, 891-9999. For details, call 0919 681-0552.)

    'CLASSIC ROMANCE' REPEAT

    FREEHAND
    by Mario E. Bautista
    People's Journal

ONE of the best shows last Valentine was Classic Romance with Raymond Lauchengco.

He serenaded his audience at the Rockwell Tent with engaging renditions of classic love songs, Broadway tunes and his own hit ballads. He got a well-deserved standing ovation and the show was so successful it's not surprising there will be a repeat at the Music Museum on Friday at 8 p.m., with Ayen Munji Laurel and Menchu Lauchengco Yulo as special guests.

No doubt Raymond's talent as a first-rate performer has not waned and he wowed the crowd with his heartfelt versions of standards like The Very Thought Of You, The Way You Look Tonight and Beyond The Sea, accompanied by the great band of ace musical director Jun Latonio. Raymond's own hits like I Need You Back and the songs from Bagets were met with jubilation by his costars in the movie who were there to support him: William Martinez and wife Yayo Aguila, Ramon Christopher, Eula Valdes and Cheska Iñigo. His medley of Spanish love songs and his selections from hit musicals like Phantom Of The Opera, South Pacific and West Side Story also received great applause. It was really a bravura that deserves to be seen by more viewers.

Raymond has just released the new single from his self-titled album with Vicor Music, a revival of his song Farewell, which will surely be the national anthem of graduating students this season. Its great music video premiered at the Podium and the audience reception was very encouraging.

For tickets to his Classic Romance concert ranging from P800 to P1,200, please call Ticketworld at 891-9999 or 0919-681-0552.

    Re: Raymond Lauchengco

    Raymond Lauchengco shares his life

    By MIA ROCHA- LAUCHENGCO

Yet another standing ovation capped Raymond Lauchengco’s dazzling repeat performance of his Valentine concert, ‘Classic Romance’, held at the Music Museum last March 31.

The crowd quickly rose to its feet at the end of Raymond’s rendition of ‘As If We Never Said Goodbye’ and asked for more, to which Raymond obliged with the Bobby Darin classic, ‘The Curtain Falls’.

The very well-attended two-hour concert was filled with classic and romantic music which was beautifully complemented by an elegant set reminiscent of the classy nightclubs of the 50s, with Tivoli lights suddenly shining behind the off-white backdrop—a lovely effect which drew applause during Raymond’s rendition of ‘The Way You Look Tonight’.

Raymond, looking dapper as ever in a cream tuxedo, opened the show with ‘Come Fly With Me’, as though to ask the audience to join him in a journey through his music, and in a sense, his life. He went on to sing a string of standards, capping the segment with an enchanting medley with the equally enchanting Ayen Munji-Laurel. Raymond and Ayen make a lovely singing pair, and in their duet of ‘The Very Thought Of You’, Ayen’s sweet, sexy, silky voice stood its own as a perfect complement to Raymond.

Not many people knew that the first few songs Raymond ever became aware of were Spanish songs since his parents would always play Spanish records when he was a young boy. Raymond gave a beautiful performance of the Spanish classic ‘Historia de un Amor’. Songs such as these require passion and fire, and having grown up speaking the language, Raymond’s performance was not found wanting.

Another highlight was Raymond’s nostalgic trip down memory lane, where he introduced his first hit, ‘I Need You Back’, as the song that changed his life. ‘If ‘I Need You Back’ was the song that changed my life,’ Raymond later quipped, ‘the movie where this song came from was the movie that changed my life.’ And the first strains of ‘So It’s You’ from the iconic 80s movie, ‘Bagets’, began to play. He asked ‘Bagets’ leading lady Eula Valdez (who was in the audience along with other ‘Bagets’ cast members who were there to lend Raymond their support) to join him onstage, and the audience was treated to the sight of one of the most popular love teams during its time. Eula gamely sang a few strains of the song with Raymond as film clips of the movie played on the video screens. (A common observation was that while the pair looked great in the 80s, they look even better today.)

‘Bagets’ director Maryo J. de los Reyes was also in the audience and as Raymond continued the segment, it turned out to be a spontaneous tribute to the accomplished director, as Raymond then sang the theme of ‘Saan Darating Ang Umaga’, also an acclaimed Marjo J. film. ‘I was very proud to have been part of that movie,’ said Raymond, as he asked Direk Maryo to stand up and be acknowledged.

For the song ‘Farewell’, Raymond asked the rest of the ‘Bagets’ cast in the audience—William Martinez, Yayo Aguila, Ramon Christopher, Cheska Inigo, and Quezon City Vice Mayor Herbert Bautista to join him onstage and sing with him. It became a happy sing-along for the six friends, to the delight of the audience. At the end of the song, Raymond asked Direk Maryo to join them onstage, and the song ended with the group in a giant bear hug.

‘We rarely see each other,’ Raymond said, ‘but when we do get together, it’s like old times. There’s a bond there that cannot be broken.’ Raymond also intimated that the group is planning something ‘big’…we wonder what that could be?

From there Raymond shared some personal thoughts, about the time he thought he quit showbiz for good, and how quitting may have been perceived as the worst thing he could do for his career, but it was something Raymond said he had to go through to appreciate what a gift it is for him to be able to perform. He said, ‘I was living life without a purpose, without a mission…I had to go through that period and try other things—thankfully God blessed me with success there, too—but He showed me that I was made to sing…and now I am back and I thank God for this second chance…I simply want to be singing until the day I die.’ A soulful, honest interpretation of the crossover hit ‘Only Hope’ then followed.

Raymond and his sister, the beautiful Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, ushered in the Broadway suite, in a nod to Raymond’s beginnings as a performer. A lively portion of Broadway excerpts followed, with Raymond venting his frustration at being Menchu’s brother, that since Menchu would always be cast as the female lead in plays, he could never play the male lead! Raymond then sang a show-stopping medley of the most unforgettable songs from Broadway.

The show ended with ‘As If We Never Said Goodbye’, a song that has a special meaning for Raymond as it speaks of a performer’s return to the stage after how he has missed it for so long. When Raymond sang the lines, ‘I’ve been in the wings too long/That’s all in the past/Now, I’m taking centerstage/I’ve come home at last/And this time will be bigger/And brighter than we knew it/So watch me fly, you’ll know I’ll try and do it…’ it then seemed clear that this Raymond truly is very different from the pop singer we used to know, and the audience could not help but stand up and applaud, not only his performance, but the journey that had brought him there that evening.
