Randy Santiago celebrates 20th year with a new album! By WALDEN SADIRIIf there’s one thing Randy Santiago would have done in his 20 years in show business, it’s to be aggressive! The pop icon of the 80’s admitted that he prioritized his TV career more than his recording career. Like the singers of today he related that he could have released more than six albums in 20 years if he was just aggressive. "I just became very comfortable in my TV shows...dapat hindi ako naging tamad. Hindi ko tuloy napagtuunan yung being a song writer and the like. I would have written more songs and otherwise maraming marami sana akong album tulad ng mga artists natin ngayon," he explained. Randy, who was once a regular host and performer in Sharon Cuneta’s show in the 80’s, had a string of successful TV shows as host to his credit — "Lunchdate," "SST," "Isang Linggo NaPo Sila" and "MTB." His latest was the recently defunct family sitcom "My Juan And Only" with Ai Ai de las Alas. Good thing though, Randy’s hiatus from television has given him time to launch and promote his latest album under Vicor Records entitled "Beinte Na, Hihirit Pa: All Hits Live." Recorded live through Stagecraft International and Acoustic Underground, the album is a compilation of all his popular songs throughout the years plus two new original songs. Some of Randy’s hits in the album are "Babaero," "Mend Your Ways/Without You," "Para Sa ‘Yo" and "Hindi Magbabago." His new songs are "Never Will There Be Another One Like You" a composition for the wedding of his brother Raymart Santiago to Claudine Barretto and "‘Wag Kang Aanga-Anga." He also shared that it was his first composition "Babaero," which became a hit, that inspired him to compose more songs. And these songs (e.g. "Siguro," "Yakap Yakap," "Naglalambing," "Ikaw Pa Lang") bore the Randy Santiago mark in terms of musicality. Considering the budget for his new album, it was impossible for Randy to meet his goal which was to rearrange all his songs for his new album. But he made ends meet also with the help of his friends and family in the business. For example his music video for "‘Wag Kang Aanga-Anga" was directed by his brother Rowell Santiago; while Reily "Jun" Santiago supervised his album’s production from the start. With regards to his hit song "Babaero," Randy stressed during his album launch at Ratsky Tomas Morato last Tuesday that his song doesn’t conform to him. In fact throughout his 20 years he never scandalized himself and his career nor was he linked to any career damaging intrigues. "I’ve always been careful with what I do kasi family–oriented talaga ang family namin. Wala namang pambababeng nangyari. Naging mabait lang ng konti," he smiled. Randy Santiago with the Serenity Band will have a "Beinte Na, Hihirit Pa" mall tour in SM North EDSA (Feb. 11), SM Fairview (Feb. 18), SM Baguio (Feb. 24), SM Marilao (Mar. 3), SM Sta. Rosa (Mar. 5), SM Cebu (Mar. 10), SM Davao (Mar. 18), SM Bacoor (Mar. 24), SM San Lazaro (Mar. 25) and SM Cagayan de Oro (Mar. 31). "Mr. Shades" or "Mr. Private Eyes," call him whatever, but Randy Santiago, in those 20 years (hopefully, 20 years more), to the eyes of many have always been a "Total Entertainer!" http://www.mb.com.ph/ENTR2006021055965.html

STARCIRCUIT By Ricky L. Calderon The Freeman 02/10/2006 * * * Randy Santiago had a successful and lively launch for his brand new album at Ratsky's Morato the other day. The singer's new CD titled "Beinte Na, Hihirit Pa" is a collector's item, especially for those who had followed his recording career since 1986. It feels good to listen again to Randy's hits like "Hindi Magbabago," "Naglalambing," "Siguro," "Babaero," and "Para Sa 'Yo" which were given new arrangements for a more contemporary taste and feel. The new album also includes the song "Never Will There Be Another One," which Randy wrote as a wedding gift for brother Raymart and girlfriend Claudine Barretto, who are tying the knot on March 27, which also happens to be the wedding anniversary of Randy and Raymart's parents. In an interview with Randy after he did a mini-concert, he was asked how he felt towards Willie Revillame who's at the center of a controversy following the stampede that happened at the Ultra last Saturday. According to Randy, there's no one to blame for the tragedy-not even Willie or ABS-CBN. He says Willie should not carry the burden upon his shoulders since he just did his job, as a "good soldier" that he need to advertise the exciting prizes for the first anniversary of the program "Wowowee" aired on Channel 2. He says the economy is bad, but he stressed that not all people who went to Ultra last Saturday were after the prizes. "I believe most of the people who went there just wanted to be entertained and were not really there for the prizes." He understands the plight of Willie and the staff of "Wowowee" since he witnessed how people would flock to the studio for the game show. He was once a part of "MTB" with John Estrada and Willie, and one of the most popular portions of that show was "Pera o Bayong," that also offers exciting prizes. Randy says there might also be a lapse on the part of the PNP to secure the area. "The police should have dispersed the people when they started camping out as early as Monday when the show is scheduled for Saturday. What if a stampede happened on Wednesday? How are we going to address that problem?" he shot back at the press. http://www.philstar.com/philstar/Freeman200602102401.htm

Sumikat si Randy noong 1987 sa kanta niyang Di Magbabago, na nanalo pang Song of the Year that time.

Ang tagal na pala no’n almost 20 years. Kasama rito ang "Naglalambing," "Para Sa ‘Yo," "Pagod Na Puso," "Ikaw Pa Lang," "Yakap-Yakap" among others. May nadagdag na original composition, ang "Never Will There Be Another One Like You" (ang song na regalo ni Randy sa ikakasal na sina Raymart at Claudine Barretto come March).

BASTA Nitz Miralles People's Tonight* * * Compilation of his earlier hits ang nakapaloob sa Beinte Na Hihirit Pa album ni Randy Santiago.

Randy revives 20 years of hitsSOUNDS FAMILIAR By Baby A. Gil The Philippine Star 02/22/2006 Clever is the best way to describe producers and marketing people in the local music industry. They are constantly battling with insurmountable problems like piracy, high taxes and the superior resources of foreign labels. But take note, they still manage to come up with interesting ideas for their releases that keep the music industry afloat. One of the most often used among these is the repackaged album. Throw in some videos and a new song or two into an old album and you get a repackaged or expanded release. Other marketing ploys are getting an artist to re-record his old hits live or to record songs that go against his usual style but is more in keeping with current trends. In both instances, you get a product that is new but also pander to the huge nostalgia market. Two of the recent ones are Randy Santiago’s Beinte Na, Hihirit Pa! and Renz Verano’s self-titled album. Randy, a star of recording, films and television, has been in the music business for a good two decades. Admittedly, it is not easy for him to compete on the same level with today’s hot acts like singing champions or the rock bands. But he has sold a lot of hits and there is nobody around who can perform those oldies as well as he does. So he sings them again and weaves in a lot of sweet memories into the package. Nice, although I missed You’ve Got the Power which he once did with Gino Padilla and Juan Miguel Salvador. The album is aptly titled Beinte Na, Hihirit Pa! And hirit all throughout he does with live versions of his hits plus more. Included among these are some of the most enduring tunes from the past 20 years. Recorded at Ratsky in Morato, Quezon City with his new band Serenity were Vehnee Saturno’s Para Sa ‘yo, Tats Faustino’s Hindi Magbabago, Mon Espia’s Paikot-ikot and Janu Villanueva’s Tuloy Pa Rin Ako. Buyers will also be glad to find out that a number of their favorites from the past were composed and performed by Randy himself, Babaero, Siguro, Yakap-Yakap, Naglalalambing, Ikaw at Ako, Ikaw Pa Lang, Pagod Na Puso, Dance with Me and Dudera. There are also medleys of Mend Our Ways/ Without You and ‘ Di Ako Papayag/Ano Man ang Sabihin. A new composition is Never Will There Be Another One Like You, which Randy wrote for the coming wedding of younger brother Raymart to Claudine Barretto. Then there is the perky proof that not much has changed about Randy and his music during the past 20 years, ‘ Wag Kang Aanga-anga. The song is getting to be a radio favorite and makes me feel like we’re back to the Private Eyes with the Hawi Boys days of long ago. A video of the song is included with an intensive interview about Randy and his music in the bonus VCD that comes with every copy of Beinte Na, Hihirit Pa! Watch out for Randy as he continues his tour of SM Malls to promote his album these coming weeks. Friday, Feb. 24 will find him in SM Pampanga; Saturday, Feb. 25 at SM Bacoor; Friday, March 3 at SM Marilao; Sunday, March 5 at SM Baguio; Friday, March 10 at SM Cebu and Saturday, March 18 at SM Davao. http://www.philstar.com/philstar/NEWS200602221703.htm

Randy Santiago finds fresh perspective in old favorites By JOJO PANALIGANIn celebrating his 20th year in the music business, recording superstar Randy Santiago could’ve gone the easy route of remastering his old hits, compiling them in one collection, and releasing the disc to a captured market. But Randy, despite his enviable status, has too much respect for his fans to not recognize that they, too, like his artistry, has matured. "Mas discerning na ang tao ngayon between quality output and so-so ones," he says during a recent interview. "I know that people are into the band sound of guitar orientation right now so that’s what I’m giving them in songs already familiar to them." Thus, "Beinte Na, Hihirit Pa" under Vicor Music. A live recording of Randy’s hits done in Ratsky Morato, it contain his biggest smash tunes as "Di Magbabago," "Naglalambing," "Babaero," "Pagod Na Puso," and "Yakap-Yakap" done with his band Serenity in updated arrangements. "Vicor initially balked at the idea of me not just redoing the songs but doing these live," says Randy. "Magastos daw and I understand that. But I wanted this recording to be special so I told them na wag na nilang intindihan ang gastos; that I don’t mind spending extra for the album so long as maganda ang kalabasan."Apart from old favorites, Randy threw in two new songs in "Beinte Na, Hihirit Pa" namely "Wag Kang Aangaanga" and "Never Will There Be Another One Like You." The first is the album’s banner single that channels his past semi-novelty songs as "Babaero"and "Siguro" albeit in more sophisticated musical backdrop. The second is his wedding gift to brother Raymart Santiago who will be in holy matrimony with actress Claudine Barretto soon. "I’ve known Claudine even when she was just a girl," Randy reminisces. "Few know that our families have been friends forever. Honestly, though, I never thought Claudine and Raymart would end up together. Di kasi yan dalawang yan masyadong nagpapansinan back in the days." There are a lot of things Randy remembers, too, when it comes to his meteoric rise to fame. One is how people would, for a time, alter the image of Emilio Aguinaldo on the R5-bill with shades and a mole ala-Randy. Another is how he was not able to hold a standing-room-only major concert at the Ultra mere months after he burst into the scene. Still another is how his first single, "Di Ako Magbabago," stayed on many radio station charts for a year which made it "Most Requested Song" of 1987. "I’m happy with and grateful to people for my success but I guess I could’ve achieved more had people not been torn between Randy the balladeer and Randy the rocker," he says. Randy adds: "Siguro din kung nagconcentrate muna ako sa pagkanta and not ventured into the movies and television right away like I did, I would’ve evolved nearer to becoming a total entertainer." Perhaps. What’s certain is how Randy became a successful entrepreneur with three chains of Ratsky restaurants to his name. These are Ratsky Morato, Ratsky Malate and Cebu Ratsky that have all flourished as prime entertainment and dining places. "Ratsky is how I keep abreast of the latest trends in music," he says. "Because only the hottest bands play there, I get to not just know but get a feel of what people want in music at any given time which I then apply to my own." Which among his originals is he most proud of? "‘Pagod Na Puso.’ Every time I read the lyrics of that song, I know that I could not have written it without the help of God. The lyrics are very inspirational which is in direct opposition then to my image as ‘Babaero.’" To promote "Beinte Na, Hihirit Pa," Randy is currently touring the malls. These are SM Pampanga on Feb 24; SM Bacoor, Feb 25; SM Marilao, March 3; SM Baguio, March 5; SM Cebu, March 10 and; SM Davao, March 18. http://www.mb.com.ph/ENTR2006022356999.html

Back on the groove By Isah V. RedRANDY Santiago celebrates two decades of success in the recording scene via the release of Beinte Na, Hihirit Pa. The disc is all-hit recorded by Randy live at Ratsky Morato with his band, Serenity, and comprised by new arrangements of his biggest hits that gave him enviable status in the business. It can be recalled that Randy shot to fame in 1987 via the release of his very first single “Di Magbabago.” That song became so big that it topped the charts all over and stayed on radio stations’ playlist for a solid year consequentially earning “Song of the Year” status. “Di Magbabago,” and the equally successful follow-up single, “Babaero” made Randy the multimedia star who had television shows left and right and stints at the movies. That same year, Randy underlined his sensational rise with a major gig at the Ultra—merely seven months after he came into public consciousness. Further proof of his popularity was Emilio Aguinaldo on P5-bill being “altered” by kids for the National Hero to resemble Randy. Later, Bangko Sentral would issue a memorandum with strict instructions to business establishments to not honor such bills. Eyewear companies also experienced unprecedented business that year as many bought shades to mimic Randy’s signature style of wearing dark glasses always that earned for him the monicker “Mr. Shades” and “Private Eyes.” Alwyn Cruz of Vicor Music likewise recalls that Randy was such a prized and in-demand artist that he and his posse (called the Hawi Boys which Willie Revillame, Dennis Padilla, and members of the ’90s band The Big Thing was part of) was given by his record label his own office that served as halfway house between maddeningly hectic commitments. And although Randy is more known today as TV host and successful entrepreneur (he owns three high-flying restaurants namely Ratsky Morato, Cebu Ratsky, and Ratsky Malate), his contribution to Original Pilipino Music can not be denied. Apart from “Di Magbabago,” and “Babaero,” Randy’s other hits are “Naglalambing,” “Para SaYo,” “Pagod Na Puso,” “Ikaw Pa Lang,” “Yakap-Yakap” among so many others. These, together with new songs “Wag Kang Aanga-anga” (the banner single) and “Never Will There Be Another One Like You” (Randy’s gift to brother Raymart’s upcoming wedding to Claudine Barretto), are contained in Beinte Na, Hihirit Pa. When asked for one memorable story relating to his career during the last 20 years, Randy cites a story written about him during the height of his meteoric rise to fame. “The article was titled 'And suddenly…Randy Santiago,' Randy says. “The gist of the article is that I came from out of nowhere at the point where Martin Nievera and Gary Valenciano were fierce rivals. Remembering that article reminds me that my success was God-given; one that can be called a backdoor blessing.” http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=g...fe02_feb24_2006

Randy iniwan ang pagkanta para magdirekTATTLE by : Nel AlejandrinoNAUGHTY singer, comedian, tv host and former actor Randy Santiago turns tv director in the new ABS-CBN sitcom, Aalog-alog, starring Pokwang, Keanna Reeves, Ya Chang, Jayson Gainza, Zanjoe Marudo and John Prats. Former Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Teenage Edition housemates Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson are being introduced in the show. According to Randy, ang Aalog-Alog ay concept ni Edgar Mortiz. But because he is busy with other ABS shows (Let’s Go, to name one), sabi ni direk Bobot kay Randy, ‘Ikaw na ang mag-direk nito (referring to the new show).’ Bobot will act as a creative consultant. How different is the show from other ABS-CBN sitcoms o sa iba pang channel?, muling tanong kay Randy. “Well, for one, sa initial episode namin’y nag-location kami sa Japan. Japayuki ang role rito ni Keanna, who turns recruiter. She entices John, Zanjoe and Jayson to go with her to Japan. Kaya napa-trouble sila. “They had no choice but to live with Keanna when they are sent back to the Philippines. * * * DID you know that during his time, isa sa pinaka-popular tv hosts si Randy? If we remember right, may grupo siyang kung tawagin ay “Hawi Boys” when he was hosting Lunch Date. Two of his more popular Hawi Boys, who made good in showbiz themselves are Dennis Padilla, na naging kilalang komedyante rin, at si Chinky Tan, isa nang milyonaryong negosyante. Nang maging host at concept director naman si Randy ng Salu-Salo Together (SST) (also on GMA-7), natuklasan niyang puwedeng maging komedyante si Bayani Agbayani, then one of the show’s writers. After talking to him, he called up younger brother Raymart Santiago and told him that he just discovered a new comedian na puwedeng ‘isalang’ sa Kool Ka Lang. Kool... was also his concept at ididirek sana niya (for GMA-7). He, however, gave up the job in deference to ABS-CBN. This was when Pops was just starting in showbiz. Ten years married na si Randy to Marilou Coronel, mother of his three sons — Raphael, 16; Ryan, 14; at Raiko, four. Randy Santiago, now a full-fledged director
By WALDEN SADIRI
When it comes to discovering talents, Randy Santiago has proven throughout his career that he has a good eye for potential stars.
For example, he was responsible for giving "Wowowee" host Willie Revillame a good break on television through "S.S.T.," a noontime variety show he created and directed in the 90’s. Then came Dennis Padilla and Bayani Agbayani.
"I usually gave these hosts our show’s heavy segments only to realize that I was the one who wasn’t appearing on TV anymore," recalled Randy.
He was also responsible for making an actor out of Dagul. According to him, while he was resting inside their dressing room after "MTB" one time, he saw a short man walked by. He startled him.
"After I interviewed him and made him act in front of me, I called Raymart and told him I have an actor for him. That was the reason he became a regular at ‘Kool Ka Lang,’" said Randy.
His flair for finding talent could also be attributed to his years of working with his father who was a very talented filmmaker during his time, the late Pablo Santiago. Randy used to be an assistant director to his father during the 80’s. He was more than qualified for the job because actually he has a degree in Communication Arts, major in Filmmaking, from De La Salle University.
I also worked in Nora Aunor’s ‘Annie Sabungera’ and I was even the voice of the roster," laughed Randy as he recalled his directing days. He already was the second unit director of his father when they were shooting "Bad Boys From The Dyangas" and was on his way to becoming a full–blown feature film director.
Unfortunately for the film industry, his filmmaking career was sidetracked by a movie he worked in entitled "Ninja Kids." He sang its theme song "You’ve Got The Power" that became an instant hit. Then it was followed by "Hindi Magbabago" which is now considered one of the classic hit songs among Filipino music lovers.
"Nakadaya ako," smiled Randy. "So sabi ko I’ll sing first. Kaya napunta ako to singing. My father was hopeful that I would follow in his footsteps then because Rowell was acting and I was the one shooting movies with him."
His father was then discouraging him to pursue a singing career especially since he was just making R280 a night with a showband.
But Randy hit gold as a singer and became a local pop icon with hit songs after hit songs and packed concerts here and abroad. But he didn’t just become a recording artist or a performer; he also dabbled in a little bit of acting and soon became a popular figure on television as a TV host of different variety shows.
And after more than 20 years, Randy Santiago has gone back to one of his first love which is directing in ABS–CBN’s soon to be aired sitcom entitled "Aalog-alog."
With an original concept from veteran TV director Edgar Mortiz, "Aalog-alog" is about two neighbors who were once both working in Japan. It tackles the funny relationship of Pokwang who was able to marry a rich Japanese and whose house is modern and livable; while Keanna Reeves’ house is termite –riddled and literally tipping over to different sides depending where the people living in her home are standing!
"I’ve always wanted to direct; in fact kung maalala ninyo nang inumpisahan namin yung kay Raymart Santiago ‘Kool Ka Lang.’
"Aalog-alog" also stars Ya Chang, Jayson Gainza, Zanjoe Marudo, John Pratts, Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson.
A side story of "Aalog-alog" is among Keanna and Jayson, Zanjoe and John. The three boys mentioned were working in Japan because of Keanna. But they got in trouble with immigration officer Ya Chang who pursued them. The three disguised as geishas but one of the policemen was attracted to John Pratts as a woman. When he was going to rape him, John proved himself to be a man which caused the police to | | |
