"Of course, that’s not true. She’s (Dulce) still in the picture! Maayos naman kaming nag-usap at tutulong lang ako. Nandoon pa rin siya with Pops," katuwiran sa amin ni Arnold.

Bilang simula nga ng pagma-manage niya kay Pops, makakasamang muli nito si Kuh Ledesma sa February 13 and 14 sa Mandarin Hotel sa Makati City.

Dulce Lukban, mother of Concert Queen Pops Fernandez, is still feeling sore at her famous daughter after learning that she has taken a new manager in the person of Arnold Vegafria.

Dulce rues that Pops didn't even bother to inform her of her decision to take on a new manager, when it was her mother who has handled her career from the start. This is not the first time that Pops did it. We learned that when Pops got Deo Endrinal to handle her career a few years back, she also didn't tell her mom. So imagine Dulce's surprise when she found out.

We understand that it's hard, on the part of Dulce, to accept the idea of Pops wanting to take on a new direction in her career, and excluding her. Moreover, it puzzles us that her daughter didn't even bother to inform her. But only Pops can answer all these questions.

Could it be that Pops didn't have the heart to tell her mom that she no longer wishes to be managed by her? But I guess what is more painful for a mother is that her daughter isn't seemingly inclined to give her the respect that she rightfully deserves.

I don’t believe rumors that Pops Fernandez had a falling out with mom Dulce Lucban. She supposedly dropped her mom as manager and is now being handled by Arnold Vegafria.

I know Pops and her mom quite well. Money will never be an issue between them. As Pipay once told me: “Sa amin ni Mommy and her DSL Productions, walang kuwentahan.”

I also recall what Tita Dulce once told me, “I’ve stopped waiting for romance. I’m devoting my life to my children.”

As a mom/manager myself (to IC), I’ve learned that sometimes the best way to manage your kids is not to manage them at all.

YOU read it right. Sa tinagal-tagal sa showbiz ng concert queen na si Pops Fernandez, nasasaktan pa rin daw siya tuwing nakaririnig ng masasakit na komento't intriga, lalo na tungkol sa kanyang lovelife at pamilya.

Lately nga'y sobra ang pagiging controversial ng singer-actress dahil sa sinasabing May-December romance nila ni Jomari Yllana at ang pagtatampo ng inang si Dulce Lukban sanhi ng biglaang pagpapalit niya ng manager.

For the longest time kasi, si Dulce ang humahawak sa career ni Pops. Pero paliwanag ng huli sa presscon kahapon ng Valentine show niyang Let's Talk About Love sa Mandarin Oriental Captain's Bar with Kuh Ledesma on Feb. 13 and 14, tulong niya na sa ina ang pagpapalit ng manager.

Gusto raw niya itong bigyan ng mas maraming oras para magawa ang iba pang mga bagay na magpapasaya rito, kaya naisipan niyang lumipat sa kuwadra ni Arnold Vegafria.

Actually, hindi rin naman ito ang unang beses na nagpahawak si Pops sa ibang manager. If we're not mistaken, hinawakan din siya ng Backroom, Inc. ni Boy Abunda for a time.

Ang pagkakamali lang daw niya this time, ayon kay Pops, ay sa ibang tao pa unang narinig ng ina ang tungkol sa plano.

Takot daw kasi siyang saktan ito, kaya sa kapatid niyang si Joey niya ito sana ipinasasabi.

"Obviously, natakot din si Joey, kaya naunahan siya ng ibang taong magsabi kay mommy," nangingiting sambit ni Pops.

So far, okay na raw sila ni Dulce at no matter what happens, "we're still family. The love and the respect will always be there."

Dagdag pa niya, "I admit it was a big mistake that she heard it from someone else. I have to take the blame for it. Sa sobrang takot ko, hindi ko nakayang sabihin. But we're very much okay. Actually, it's her birthday this weekend… At the end of the day, she'll realize I did it to help her do other things."

Pinabulaanan din niyang may kinalaman ang nangyari sa diumano'y pagkakadisgusto ni Dulce kay Jomari.

Depensa ni Pops, "That's not true. Jom has nothing to do with it. I make my own decisions."

Recently lang daw nagkakilala sina Dulce at Jomari and, so far, ayon sa singer-actress, "Okay naman, wala namang saksakan. Hahaha!"

Inamin din niyang nasasaktan siya sa naglalabasang negative comments sa kanila ng ex-hubby ni Aiko Melendez.

May mga nagsasabi rin kasing mukha siya tiya ng aktor tuwing sila'y magkasama.

"Siyempre, I'm hurt. It's masakit kasi parang sa sobrang tagal ko na sa industriya, there has to be respect given as to whoever I want to go out with.

"Tao pa rin naman ako, 'no? Hindi ako robot. You guys, especially the press, know that my life has always been private.

"Ang sa akin, as long as my kids (Robin and Ram) know what's happening, I don't have to answer to anybody. I'm always home, so imposibleng napapabayaan ko ang mga anak ko.

"I've never given them so much time and attention than now. Kaya rin siguro kami naiintriga ni Jom is because dumadalaw siya sa bahay. Mas gusto ko kasi roon. Even when I go out with other friends, mas gusto kong sa Alabang na lang para malapit lang ang uwian," paliwanag ni Pops.

For the record, sila na bang talaga ni Jomari? "We're still very much in the dating process. But I also go out with a lot of other people.

"Kaya siguro nama-magnify yung sa amin ni Jom is because he's popular. Minsan nga tinatanong ko rin ang sarili ko, eh, is it because I'm Pops Fernandez kaya everyone's making a big deal out of it, is it because I'm a separated woman or does this happen to other women, too?" balik tanong ni Pops sa mga kaharap.

Ang nagiging takbuhan at sumbungan daw niya sa mga ganitong pagkakataon ay ang halos binata nang sina Robin at Ram, na aware sa pinagdaraanan ng ina. Sad man, pero hindi raw maiiwasang may nagtatanong din sa mga ito sa school.

"One time nga, kuwento ni Robin, 'It's okay, mom, I told everyone in school not to believe everything they read because they're not true.' So I asked him, 'You really said that?' Sabi niya, yes. So I said, ah, okay," natatawang kuwento na lang ni Pops.

Pops dates guys, young and older


THE sultry singer Pops Fernandez admits she has been dating the actor Jomari Yllana, but firmly asserts they are not sweethearts, “because I have been dating other guys, too.”

Pops, the former wife of Concert King Martin Nievera, says she sees nothing wrong with going out with a number of guys, because she is legally single despite being the mother of two grown-up sons, Robin and Ram.

“I am single, and it is the privilege of single women to go out with as many decent single men who are willing to take them out,” she reasons out.

The Concert Queen acknowledges that Jomari, the former husband of the actress and Councilor Aiko Melendez, is much younger than her, just like Piolo Pascual and Brad Turvey, both of whom had also dated her.

She goes on to stress, though: “If I have been going out with younger men, it is not because I seek them out, it is because they seek me out. And since they are decent, interesting and presentable young men, I don’t see anything wrong with going out with them.

“But, then, those young guys—even as I had never sought them out—are not the only ones I go out with. I do have friends and admirers who are my age or older, but they are not from show biz, so my friendships with them do not get written about and don’t become show-biz issues.”

Realizing that her revelation might make others think she does not have much to do in her life, Pops quickly clarifies that she is basically a homebody.

“I have been keeping a hectic schedule in and outside the country for sometime now, so during much of my free time, I have to stay at home as much as I can because I do have two sons to take care of. And the truth is that I do prefer to stay at home than going out to parties.”

So where does ex-husband Martin figure in her life now?

“We’re friends now—very good friends who are very comfortable with each other. So comfortable that we can now stay together with the kids for long vacations without them worrying that we might have a misunderstanding any time.”

Pops further confides that she and Martin had already sat down and figured out what went wrong with their marriage so they could both learn from it.

“As far as I am concerned, and without getting into so much detail, it all boils down to ‘incomplete’ communication between the two of us. I’m sure people will find that ironic since Martin and I are both known for being very articulate! But we both failed in the honesty part of it. We were not always completely honest in what we would tell each other then even in terms of our feelings toward certain things or issues in our lives. So the lack of an honest and thorough communication between the two of us snowballed into other problems until we were both overwhelmed and had to separate to make our lives less miserable, as well as those of our very young kids then.

With their differences practically settled, is reconciliation between them as husband and wife, and not just as parents to their teenage sons, possible?

Pops is very straightforward in her answer: “No. I prefer to enjoy more years being single while attending to the needs of our children and enjoying my career, for which I have become more passionate than ever. I am not really closing my doors on Martin, especially if we talk about 10 or 15 years from now. I will be dishonest and heartless if I say that he has totally lost his place in my heart.”

“Showbits” practically cornered Pops for this very revealing conversation after her press conference with Pop Diva Kuh Ledesma for their Valentine concert, “Lets Talk About Love.” The concert will be at the Captains Bar of The Mandarin Oriental Manila in Makati on February 13 and 14.

Pops’ lovelife in the upswing


It looks like Pops Fernandez’s lovelife is in the upswing.


When we spoke with her Monday afternoon during the press conference for her Valentine show with the Diva, Ms. Kuh Ledesma at the Teatrino in Greenhills, she admitted to us that she and actor Jomari Yllana are in the "very much dating process."

Pops said although she goes out with other "friends" in an attempt to water down the implication of her revelation, there is nothing romantic about the other dates she goes out to. "Hey, this makes life more exciting so please, let it be," she said with a smile.

Pops also seems oblivious to the negative reactions of the public to her new lovelife because when we asked her how she reacts to negative opinions about her going out with Jomari, she simply said, "hurt ako. I just feel that I have been in this business too long that I am entitled to a little bit of respect."

She said however that "as long as the people who matter know what’s going on in my life. I’m fine. My kids know the truth and that’s good enough for me."

Pops denied rumors that she has been neglecting her kids because of Jomari’s presence in her life. "That’s so not true. I’ve never been this close, never been this attentive to my kids than now. I have more time to be with them," she said.

She said that the time she spoke to her kids about Jomari, one of her sons responded "I know Mom. I heard it from some people in school." Pops said it lifted her spirit so much when her son told her he defended her by telling his schoolmate, "you should not believe everything you read. If you want to know the truth, you can always ask me."

Pops said her ex-husband Martin Nievera also knows what’s going on. "Not that I needed to explain to him. But he knows. He listens. In the same way that I listen to him when he tries to tell me something," she said.

Pops also clarified that she and her mother Dulce Lukban are in the best of terms now. "We’re still in love with each other. It’s true na nagtampo siya, and I admit it was my fault I didn’t tell her right away and that she had to hear it from someone else. But we’re really okay now," she said.

The singer said "I was afraid to hurt her with my decision to switch managers (with Arnold Vegafria) that’s why I asked my brother Joey to be the one to tell her. Hindi rin niya agad nasabi. And then she heard it from someone else pa. Naturally, she was hurt. I would, too, if our situation was reversed."

"But now, she’s okay. It doesn’t mean that she no longer has a say in my career. She is still very much a part of it. I just want her to have more time for herself, concentrate in some other things that she wants to do. Bottom line is, I just love her so much," Pops said with a big smile.

In her concert with Ms. Kuh Ledesma, Pops said she and Kuh will be doing well-loved duets that they have done in their past three shows together, the last of which was in 1999.

"We would always ask each other when can we perform together again. This year’s Valentine season makes that desire come true," Pops said.

The two-night Valentine show is billed "Let’s Talk About Love" and it happens on Feb. 13 and 14 at the Captain’s Bar of Mandarin Oriental in Makati City. Musical director is Rey Cristobal and their special guest is businessman-turned-classical singer George Yang (of McDonald’s Corp.).

The Kuh Ledesma-Pops Fernandez show is going to be an exciting showcase not only of musical artistry but of fashion as well. Kuh said she will be wearing her own designs, executed with the help of Pops, while Pops wouldn’t want to reveal the designers who have contributed to the concert wardrobe, "para masurprise kayo," she said.

"But expect it to be some kind of a fashion show again. I don’t know with Ms. Kuh, but one of the things that make me really excited about a show is the fact that I could make all those fabulous costume changes. It’s the girl in me," she said.

Pops admits dating Jomari


PINABULAANAN ni Pops Fernandez ang tsikang niregaluhan niya si Jomari Yllana ng rolex watch worth P400,000. Natawa si Pops dahil kuripot daw siya para magregalo ng ganoong kamahal na relo. Bago raw si Jomari, eh, ang sarili na muna niya ang bibilhan niya.


But then, inamin ni Pops na they’re dating at nasa getting-to-know each other stage pa lang sila ni Jomari. Nice guy raw ito, taliwas sa pinalalabas ng ibang tao.

Daanin naman kaya ni Jomari sa kanta o matatalinghagang salita para i-describe ang relasyong namamagitan between him and Pops? He did this noong time nila ni Ara Mina.

Ayaw namang magpaapekto ni Pops sa intrigang hindi sila bagay ni Jomari dahil mukha raw siyang tiyahin ng aktor. Aware naman daw siyang marami ang may ayaw kay Jomari for her.

Until now, marami pa rin ang may gustong magkabalikan sila ni Martin Nievera. Sabi ni Pops, they’re both trying na maka-move on at sana raw ay pabayaan na lang sila sa kanilang respective lives.
