Formal na winelkam ng ABS CBN Star Magic ang Atenista Coke Girl dahil bukod sa pagiging singer niya – she has her self-titled debut album from EMI Records – and pagiging host ng several ABS shows like MXY sa Studio 23 at ASAP 06, sasabak na rin sa acting ang dalaga.

She has started taping for her first regular assignment, ang upcoming pantaserye ng ABS CBN na Rounin. Nikki will play the role of Lial, a goody-goody goddess who wants to stick with the rules.

Makaka-partner niya si Geoff Eigenmann na siya ring ka-partner sa first acting role niya sa Your Song featuring If I Keep My Heart Out Of Sight. Ito ang ayaw pag-usapan ni Nikki dahil mutual naman daw decision to split up. Saka isa pa, the last time daw na nagsalita siya, may nagsulat pa na gina-gamit niya lang daw si Gabriel.

Nikki says affair with Gary V’s son ‘has served its purpose’

NIKKI Gil captured the public’s attention as the singing model of a Coke TV commercial last year.

Then she joined showbiz and was surprised when her commercial was suddenly pulled out of circulation.

“I really don’t know why,” she says. “Basta hindi na lang nila ako kinontak. I don’t know if they were disappointed na pumasok ako sa showbiz or baka naman ako’ng nabenta at hindi ‘yung produkto. But I’ll always be thankful to them for the exposure.”

The eldest of two girls, Nikki is Monica Pauline Santos Gil in private. She graduated valedictorian in high school and is now a junior Literature major at the Ateneo.

After a year as a singer in ASAP and as a VJ in Myx, she ventures into acting in the anime-fantaserye Rounin, where she’s paired with Geoff Eigenmann and co-stars with Diether Ocampo, Agot Isidro, Angelica Panganiban, Rafael Rosell and Shaina Magdayao. She plays Lial, described as a “goody-goody goddess.”

“It’s a physical role and I have to train in the martial arts.”

She admits going steady with Gabriel Valenciano, son of Gary V, but they broke up after five months.

“He’s my very first boyfriend but it just didn’t work out. There’s no third party involved. It’s a mutual decision since we’re still too young. I’m 18 and he’s only 17. We still have a lot of growing up to do. But no regrets. It has served its purpose and I’m wiser now. We’re still friends naman as we still see each other in church.”

ABS-CBN’s Rikka Dylim hosted a special merienda to announce that Nikki is now officially a member of the Star Magic family.

“Mr. Johnny Mana-han himself invited me and I feel that they can really take good care of my career.”

Nikki has just launched her new single, Forever Is Not As Long As It Used To Be. Its music video is being played in all music stations.

QUITE TELLINGLY, NIKKI GIL IS listening these days to the soundtrack of the European movie, “Il Postino.”

“It consists of Pablo Neruda’s poems, as read by various artists, among them Sting, Madonna, Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke,” Nikki says.

Isn’t it torture to listen to romantic verses while nursing a broken heart? It’s been only two months since the 18-year-old Nikki parted ways with her boyfriend of eight months, Gabriel Valenciano.

“I really enjoy listening to [the soundtrack],” she confesses. “It allows me personal moments for contemplation.”

Since that was her first relationship and her first breakup, do tears fall when she’s alone?

“No naman,” she says, but quickly backtracks. “Not that often, anyway. I’m a girl; it’s a given that I’m sentimental.”

She makes it clear: “I’m neither bitter nor angry. In fact, Gabriel and I have remained friends.”

Mom Julie says the kids’ relationship was “ideal” at the start because Gabriel’s parents—singer Gary and manager Angeli—are “friends from church.”

Nikki volunteers: “[His parents] are nice people. They’ve been very diplomatic about everything. As if nothing happened… nothing bad happened anyway. It has served its purpose. I’m wiser now and so is he.”

The only downside are the inevitable intrigues—the most hurtful of which claims that she’s using the breakup to promote herself, specifically her new single (under EMI), which is coincidentally titled “Forever Is Not as Long as It Used to Be.”

“I’m not that shallow,” she exclaims. “I cannot play around with matters of the heart.”

On a positive note, she believes the sad chapter will help her grow as an artist. “That’s why I always say I have no regrets. I sing with more heart now.”

“Yes, it was a learning experience for her,” Julie agrees. “They were just too young for a mature kind of relationship.”

Is Nikki ready to fall in love again?

“No,” she says, “but only because I’m busy with work and school. I don’t think I can assume the responsibilities of a girlfriend as of now.”

The girl’s an incoming college junior, taking up English Literature at the Ateneo. She also recently signed up with Star Magic, ABS-CBN’s talent center.

There are persistent rumors pointing to “Rounin” co-star and fellow Myx veejay Geoff Eigenmann as her latest suitor.

“It’s best to ask him,” she tells Inquirer Entertainment. “As far as I’m concerned, we’re good friends. I’ve known him since high school. I’m very comfortable working and hanging out with him.”

Geoff was two years ahead of Nikki at the Shekinah Christian Training Center in Parañaque, where she graduated class valedictorian.

“Even after making a name for himself in show biz, he has remained the same Geoff I know and our teachers can attest to that,” Nikki says. “He’s a gentleman.”

TEKA lang, aba parang kelan lang ‘yon, nagbibiro si Gabriel Valenciano sa harap ng movie press, na magbibilang na lang siya ng dalawang taon, at pakakasalan na niya ang girlfriend niya noon na si Nikki Gil.

Pero, heto na nga sila, wala na pala sila. Hindi na natuloy ang plano ni Gabriel na pakasalan si Nikki.

"Sure ba tayo na invited ako sa wedding na `yon?" nakangiting reaksiyon ni Nikki.

Pero alam niyo ba, na sa lahat naman ng babae sa showbiz na nagkukuwento o nagsasalita tungkol sa nawalang relasyon, parang isa si Nikki sa mga babaeng may magandang pananaw sa bahaging ‘yon ng kanilang buhay.

Kunsabagay, sa kuwento nga niya, hindi naging masama si Gabriel sa kanya. Hindi naging pangit ang kanilang karanasan sa isa’t isa.

Katunayan, hanggang ngayon ay magkaibigan pa rin sila. Nagkikita sila sa church nila, dahil pareho silang miyembro ng choir.

Sa ngayon, desidido si Nikki na pag-ibayuhin nang husto ang kanyang career. Hindi na nga lang siya kakanta, o maghu-host sa TV, kundi aarte pa. Kaya nga pumirma na siya ng kontrata sa Star Magic kamakailan para maalagaan ang kanyang career.

Biniro si Nikki ng isang manunulat, na puwede na nga siyang maging isang mahusay na aktres, dahil may ‘pain’ na siya sa kanyang puso.

"Hindi naman naging masama `yung experience ko with Gabriel," nakangiting say ni Nikki.

Anyway, kung si Nikki ang masusunod, hindi talaga niya type na pinag-uusapan ang nagwakas na relasyon nila ni Gabriel. Mas type nga niyang pag-usapan ang mga plano sa kanyang trabaho, lalo na ang tungkol sa album niya.

Pero, alam ni Nikki na hindi rin siya ligtas sa mga intriga.

"Pero sana lang, huwag naman `yung masakit!" nakangiting say pa rin ni Nikki.

Si Nikki ay larawan ng isang babaeng hindi lang maganda, kundi matalino pa. Sa pagsasalita pa lang niya, malalaman mong malalim at may laman talaga ang kanyang utak.

Eh kasi nga, sa Ateneo nag-aaral si Nikki, at plano niyang tapusin talaga ang kanyang pag-aaral. Na kahit sobrang busy nga siya ngayon sa kanyang career, binibigyan pa rin niya ng panahon ang studies niya.

At siyempre, nagagawa ni Nikki ang lahat ng plano niya, dahil na rin sa tulong ng kanyang nanay, na kung titingnan mo ay puwedeng-puwede ring maging artista.

Nikki Gil says no to kissing


For Nikki Gil, womanhood doesn’t necessary involve doing kissing scenes in movies and television shows.


Nikki, who recently signed-up with ABS-CBN’s Star Magic headed by Johnny Manahan, explained that when it comes to choosing roles, she would not pick anything sexy or those with kissing scenes. But she pointed out that she doesn’t have anything against younger stars who have done it.

Hindi naman po bagay sa akin," she shyly admitted during her welcoming press conference held by Star Magic for her at 9501 in ABS-CBN. "Hindi naman po ako marunong. I’m not that artista enough. I don’t have the guts to do it.

Under Star Magic, Nikki is geared to do more acting than when she has started in showbiz a year ago. However exciting the prospect of getting involved more in various acting jobs, she just knows where to draw the line in her career. If given the chance, she would like to focus more on her singing, acting and hosting.

It can be recalled that Nikki has already released her debut album under EMI Records from where the following hit singles came from, "Sakayan ng Jeep," "Glowing Inside" and "If I Keep My Heart Out Of Sight." Her album followed by two more projects for Nikki: A shampoo commercial wherein her "Glowing Inside" single was used and an episode in "A Song For You" wherein the song "If I Keep My Heart Out of Sight" was featured and she was paired with Geoff Eigenmann, her soon to be love-team partner in showbiz.

In hosting, Nikki is a VJ in Studio 23's music video channel MYX and a regular host of "ASAP ‘06" and "Breakfast Supersize." Her showbiz life too spawned a new television commercial for Vaseline and Penshoppe where she’s one of its celebrity image models.

Nikki too was handed down her biggest break in television as she was cast in the soon to air "Rounin," tagged as an animefantaserye which is being directed by Erik Matti. She would play Lial, one of the Rounin whose expertise would be in arnis. And her love interest in the series would be no other than Geoff Eigenmann!

So why did she inked a deal with Star Magic only now?

Hindi naman po ako nagmamadali. My first year was more of trial and error. I was testing the waters so to speak because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to that time because I was a studies-freak. But after a year I realized puwedeng pagsabayin. I can enjoy both worlds so mas serious na ako after that she replied.

Nikki’s first manager was her mom. And they chose Star Magic because ABS-CBN was the reason she tried out showbiz anyway.

Well, I was with ABS-CBN for a year already. First and foremost, when I first got into show business, they were the first who coordinated with us. In fact it was Johnny Manahan who was the first to invite me to join the network. So after a year I decided that I wanted to get into the business talaga and to be more serious at the same time studying. So we opted to be with Star Magic.

Her parents too were very supportive of her decision. She attributed this to her first year in the business wherein she showed that she was still focused on her studies. She didn’t quit school like other younger actors and she never failed in any of her subjects. The trade off though for her this coming school year is that she would have to take a lighter load like 12 units or four subjects only. Nikki, an incoming Junior is majoring in English Literature at the Ateneo de Manila University.

Like before, Nikki still has fears.

"My fears before were intrigues. There’s also the fear of inadequacy that I might not live up to people’s expectations or I’m not equipped enough for the competition...I don’t mind the intrigues though because it’s part of the job and I don’t blame the media for coming out with intrigues," she shared.

Her drive though to make it in showbiz is her philosophy in life which is not regretting things in life. She’s not the type to dwell on what ifs or even what might have beens. She has a strong faith in the Lord and believes that everything that happens to her has a purpose.

Speaking about purposes, her soon to be busy career in ABS-CBN could be one of the "unforeseen" reasons as to why her five-month relationship with Gabriel Valenciano led to a breakup. She has also kept mum as to why they split up. The simplest reason she could offer is that it simply didn’t work out.

As to falling in love again, she doubt it would happen soon.

"I’m not yet ready to be in love again. Ayaw ko. I’m still at the healing process. I’m still very young. I’d like to focus on my studies, especially my career because I’m beginning to be serious about it."

Nikki’s goal too in showbiz is to win awards as a singer. She wants to influence people with her music as she shares it with them.

Actually she is pretty much involved with Alabang New Life Christian Center’s activities especially its youth band. According to her, they would at least do crusades, go to schools or do outreach programs at least once a month.

I enjoy doing it because it keeps my feet on the ground and it’s my way of paying back the Lord for everything He has given me!

Will Nikki’s star finally be magical?

Singer-TV host and VJ Nikki Gil signed up with Star Magic of ABS-CBN recently as she is determined to making a go of her showbiz career. She wants to go full blast with her career even if she vows to continue with her studies in Ateneo where she’s majoring in English Literature.

The past year saw Nikki juggling her showbiz commitments and her studies. However, she’s able to maintain a balance between her two concerns. Now, Nikki and her mom think it will be to her advantage if a full-time manager handles her career. Prior to her signing up with Star Magic, it was her mom who was managing her.

Nikki’s a VJ at MYX, also seen on Studio 23. She’s one of the hosts on ASAP 06 and Breakfast Supersize. She launched her debut album under EMI Records, which includes the singles “Sakayan ng Jeep,” “If I Keep My Heart Out of Sight” and “Glowing Inside,” used as a jingle for a popular shampoo commercial.

While she’s better known as a singer, Nikki is also trying her hand in acting. She’s one of the featured stars in the new animé-fantaserye titled Rounin where she plays the character Lial, a goody-two-shoes goddess. She has taped for the series where she has Geoff Eigenmann as love interest.

Nikki, if she could avoid it, would rather not talk about her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Valenciano (the son of Gary Valenciano). She says it was a mutual decision for them to part ways and she declined to elaborate about the breakup since she said she has answered this issue before.

She acknowledges that intrigues are part and parcel of showbiz but when it comes to her personal life, Nikki says she’d rather not comment. When it comes to other issues, especially when these are just trivial and not true, Nikki believes it would be best not to say anything.

Nikki Gil’s formula for success

Inspired by “Glowing Inside,” the heartwarming ballad used for the latest Vaseline shampoo commercial, an estimate of 50,000 high school students from all over Metro Manila recently paid tribute to their parents in recognition for the latter’s unconditional love and support through their children’s early journey in life. “Glowing Inside” was an instant hit among the youth, what with its graduation theme and the inspiring figure who popularized the song—Pop Angel of Philippine Music, Nikki Gil.

Nikki became a household name after her Coca-Cola commercial premiered in late 2004. The public was smitten with the disarming smile of a pretty teen cruising down the streets of Old Manila, singing with an angelic voice the catchy Coke song. Since then, over one year has passed but Nikki continues to be a breath of fresh air in these jaded times for the industry she has broken into.

Striking a balance

Nikki has been very busy since she hit the mainstream entertainment scene. She now has a self-titled debut album that has spawned such hits as “Sakayan ng Jeep,” “If I Keep My Heart Out of Sight,” “Glowing Inside” and the new single, “Forever Is Not As Long As It Used To Be.” She’s also a MYX VJ and a regular host of ABS-CBN’s ASAP ’06 and Studio 23’s morning show Breakfast Supersized.

Apart from singing and hosting, Nikki does commercial modeling and occasional ramp modeling being a Club Pen Model for Penshoppe Apparel. Recently, she’s added another credential to her resumé—acting. Nikki will star in ABS-CBN’s soon to be released animé-serye, Rounin, a martial arts series about five warriors with special powers out to save the world. She joins the roster of ABS CBN’s fine artists like Luis Manzano, Rafael Rossel, Jhong Hilario and Angelica Panganiban. All these young artists have undergone formal training in the different fields of martial arts that will highlight their individual characters in the animé-serye.

Despite her busy schedule, however, Nikki manages to keep her priorities in check. Like some of her contemporaries in show business nowadays, Nikki believes that education is priceless. Despite the sleepless nights and the seemingly endless working hours, she works hard to prove that a happy balance between school and work could be possible.

“No one can talk to me during exam week,” Nikki laughingly shares. “I’m a junior literature major [at the Ateneo de Manila University] and there’s so much to read! I study at every free chance I get, like on my way to school and work or in between takes. It’s a challenge but I’m still very blessed because I get to enjoy the best of both worlds.”

Surviving showbiz

In an industry where ######, scandal and controversy thrive, one would think that there’s no place in showbiz for a girl like Nikki, who has managed to stay wholesome. With critics constantly reminding everyone that “wholesome doesn’t sell,” surviving in the business without selling out has become yet another challenge.

“It’s definitely a risk,” says Nikki of being wholesome. “I don’t want to fall into the ‘goody-goody, too holy, too saccharine’ trap but I would never do anything that’s against my principles. Fortunately, there are still people who welcome the alternative that personalities like me offer.”

One such person is no less than megastar Sharon Cuneta, who has yet to hear Nikki sing live but has already admitted to having a special liking for the Pop Angel’s voice. In an interview over MYX Presents, Sharon was asked who among the young artists these days she finds good and promising; she answered with two names—R&B princess Kyla and Pop Angel Nikki Gil.

Just like any teenager who’s ever been in love, Nikki has had her share of heartbreak and the difficult process of moving on. Rumors about her recently concluded romantic relationship with Gabriel Valenciano have been going around. She hasn’t even started dousing the fire and already there are rumors about Nikki and her onscreen loveteam partner Geoff Eigenmann. She may have the privilege of being one of the most promising young celebrities today, but Nikki still goes through both the pain and joy of growing up. Despite the niche she’s created for herself in showbiz, Nikki remains down to earth and real—what you see is what you get.

With her music’s positive messages of faith and love, her youthful enthusiasm to excel in everything she does and her inspiring way of balancing her life, Nikki has become the perfect role model for the youth, giving them much-needed hope and inspiration, that with the right amount of hard work, passion, faith and humility, success can never be too far behind.

NIKKI GIL had us at hello. The winsome girl in the popular Coke commercial, who’s now a MYX VJ and a Warner Music recording artist, continually makes moves to keep the public interest high.

For starters, she has finally agreed to diversify into acting via Channel 2’s upcoming action-adventure series, “Rounin,” with Luis Manzano and Angelica Panganiban.

Monologues

Though she used to do dramatic monologues and one-act plays in high school, the Ateneo junior says she doesn’t consider herself an actress just yet.

“But, I enjoy working on the show,” she smiles. “It allows me to express myself in a different medium. There’s more pressure nga lang if you’re working with good actors and directors. You have to live up to their expectations.”

Top priority

Whether or not she succeeds as an actress, Nikki maintains that singing will always be her top priority. “It’s my first love,” she explains.

She also relishes working as a VJ. “It’s related to music, which is something that I’ve always been passionate about,” she points out. “The job makes me less of a nerd. Back in high school, ako ‘yung bookworm na active sa student council, I always stuck to the rules. When I became a VJ, I realized na cool rin pala ako kahit paano!”

Contrary to general perception, it isn’t easy being a VJ. “First of all, you have to be updated about contemporary music,” says Nikki. “When you interview artists, especially foreign musicians, you have to be on your toes, because you’re always under scrutiny.”

Nang ma -ambush interview namin ang anak ni Gary Valenciano during his mini-concert cum album launch ing Relevance from Universal Records sa SM Mega Mall ay ito ang inamin niya. So far, side pa lang ni Nikki ang nababasa regarding their split up.
Fortunately, both ex-lovers are consistent sa mga naging sagot nila na it was a mutual decision with no third party involved kaya nagtapos ang kanilang five-month relationship. For this, Gabb with family and friends beach hopped para makalimot.

This doesn’t mean na tuluyan na niyang nakalimutan si Nikki. He knows she is about to be launched as an actress sa bagong soap ng ABS-CBN na Rounin, at alam niya ring si Geoff Eigenmann ang makaka-partner nito.

Gabby understands this and is happy for the two and wishes them luck sa success ng love team nila.

Alam niya rin na chan-ces are, baka magkasama pa sila sa shows ng ABS-CBN like ASAP and okey lang sa kanya ito. Ang hin-di okeyay mapagsama silang tatlo sa isang production number.

Nikki Gil on breaking free

"I don’t mind," Nikki Gil quickly offered when pressed for comment on Gary Valenciano’s plan to migrate to the US with his family for better opportunities. Nikki is close to the Valencianos since Gary and wife Angeli’s second son, Gab was once romantically linked to her (Nikki).

"They have their own plans and agenda," continues Nikki. "If God has something in store for them, my prayers go with them. Godspeed. Hopefully, they will find themselves in God’s will. That’s breaking free from something."

Speaking of breaking free, Nikki is part of the Asian version of Breaking Free, one of the sound tracks of the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical. The teen flick is about Troy, a popular cager, and Gabriella, an intelligent new student, who love singing and performing. The road to making their dreams come true, however, is hindered by their cliques and high school stereotypes. The movie reminds one of Grease and Footloose.

Accompanying the hit Disney film is a music video featuring Nikki and two other recording artists, Vince Chong of Malaysia and Alicia Pan of Singapore. The MTV will premiere on July 23, 7:30 p.m. on Disney Channel. Breaking Free, says Nikki, is a positive song which represents the spirit of the younger generation. It talks about breaking out from one’s shell and reaching one’s goal.

Nikki did not audition for the music video. Local executives had Nikki in mind when asked to study the song and find a local artist who could sing Breaking Free and emulate the qualities of the film’s leads.

Nikki recorded the song in Singapore. She collaborated with singers Vince and Alicia. It was Nikki’s first time to work with regional artists and she enjoyed it. A Disney official says the three were real troopers and professionals. Nikki finds her fellow artists fun-loving and very good. They intimidated Nikki at first. And they wrapped up the recording and shooting of the MTV in two and a half days.

Breaking Free is a typical story of following one’s heart and passion against all odds. It’s similar to the stories of Mulan, Aladdin and Cinderella, which are Nikki’s favorite Disney animation films. It’s a song anyone can relate to including Nikki herself. Nikki recalls that she was more like Gabriella, the studious, geek type in High School Musical, when she was in high school. Proof of this is that Nikki graduated valedictorian.

Who would ever think Nikki was once a nerd? She was able to break free from that image when she sang in the Coca-Cola commercial years back. This paved the way for her entry into showbiz.

Nikki hosts ABS-CBN’s ASAP ’06, Studio 23’s Breakfast Supersize and shows of MYX. She will also host the daily reality search show Pinoy Dream Academy. She has also recorded an album featuring Sakayan ng Jeep and Glowing Inside.

Nikki is a walking testament that breaking free is not that bad at all.

Asked what other stereotype she wishes to break free from, Nikki answers, "That a showbiz personality can’t pursue his studies."

As an English Literature student at the Ateneo de Manila University, Nikki has broken free from that misconception.
