"’Yung lyrics ng Ako Ay Pilipino, everytime I sing that, it just teaches me how to be a good Filipino. It reminds me that we have beautiful country, na tayo individually as Filipino, really have ano, na ibang klaseng tao tayo, nagmamahalan tayo, at ibang klase tayong mag-survive," bungad na sabi ni Kuh. "Sa akin kasi, ang Ako Ay Pilipino can not be surpassed by any song. Okey, it’s a real classic song. I mean, when I sing my ‘Dito Ba?’ even abroad, pumapalakpak talaga ang lahat ng tao. Ibang klaseng kanta rin ito. "Pero sa Ako Ay Pilipino, people stand up. Talagang naiiyak sila sa song. Si George kasi, mostly naman, he talks about the depth of his love in his songs. Iisipin mo, paano ba nai-in love si George Canseco? It’s so poetic. Nobody I think writes that kind of Tagalog, eh," pagpapatuloy pa rin ni Kuh. "Sa tingin ko, the best way is really to remind people of his great songs. Kaya sa November 19, sa PICC, we’re going to pay tribute his great compositions, and to remind people the God given talent of George Canseco," sabi ni Kuh. May nagtatanong sa akin if I wanted to put up a show raw. November 19 daw ang date. Sabi ko, sige. Sabi ko pa, why don’t we do a tribute for George. "We didn’t know that `yung death niya happened November 19 last year. We had no idea kaya kinilabutan kaming lahat. So, itong November 19, 1 year na of his death. Can you imagine? "So, it must be meant to be. Sabi ko, Lord, bigyan mo ako ng great ideas to really glorify our Creator, `yung binigay niyang talent kay George, and also for people to realize, that he is, if not the best, he is one of the really greatest composers the Philippines has known," seryosong kuwento ni Kuh. "I can not even call it a coincidence, na sabay talaga `yung date ng show namin sa death niya. I don’t believe in coincidences anymore. "Si Miss Pilita Corrales, she said yes right away. It’s a really special show. But we need to do something like this," mahinahong say ni Kuh. "So basically, it’s the voice of the singer, and their interpretation and the beauty of the song.

Kuh can't relate to 'Hiram' A LITTLE BIT By Remy Umerez People's Journal November l9 marks the first death anniversary of composer George Canseco whose immortal songs were interpreted by some of the country's diva's and balladeers. Fittingly titled "Paano Kita Pasasalamatan" the musical tribute is topbilled by Kuh Ledesma who interpreted Canseco's "Dito Ba", "Bulaklak" and "Paano Kita Pasasalamatan" by turning them into commercial hits. Another song of Canseco which is closely identified with Kuh is "Ako ay Pilipino" waxed a time when our country was in martial rule. The song, according to Kuh made her more nationalistic and whenever she performs abroad, she always includes this in her repertoire. "Malalim na tao si Canseco and the lyrics of his songs can attest to this. He can also be super sensitive. Once I asked him to put Tagalog lyrics into "No Me Aves", the Spanish ditty waxed by Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. I find it too literal and when I told him about this, he simply said ito ang kanyang interpreatasyon sa kanta. Whenever I record his song ay nakabantay yan sa studio hanggang sa matapos ang recording. He will tell me kung dissatisfied siya sa aking intepretation. All his songs come from his heart and always overflowing with emotions. I don't think there is someone who can be called the Canseco's of the new millennium. The person who could come close to him is probably Ryan Cayabyab but then Mr. C is a much, much more. He is a living legend and a musical genius. I will always remember George for writing all those beautiful songs for me. This tribute is one of the ways we are expressing our gratitude to George," says Kuh over an excellent lunch at Good E arth in Malate. It will be an all star studded night at the PICC Plenary Hall when guests artists who have worked with George will be present and sing their signature song. Topping the list is Basil Valdez with "Ngayon at Kailanman" and he will also render duets with Kuh. Pilita corrales ("Kapantay ay Langit") Dulce ("Ako ang Nagwagi") and Zsa Zsa Padilla ("Hiram") as well as Martin Nievera and Christian Bautista will interpret aCanseco original. Of the song "Hiram," which is about illicit love, Kuh quips, "This is one song I find difficulty singing. Talagang hindi ako maka-relate." Another attraction of the concert is the appearance of harpist Noelle Cassandra, a Filipino-Chinses who hails from Vancouver, Canada. Her interest for harp begun at the age of four. With a home regimen of daily practices, she attained a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of British Columbia. She plays solo harp for classical pieces, popular songs and OPMs. She is also an arranger, songwriter and composer and will soon wax an album for a local label. The album will afford the listeners to be treated with a little slice of heaven on earth with her mix of classical ballads and pop music on harp. If only George Canseco were alive to witness this once-in-a-lifetime gathering of his favorite stars. "Paano Kita Pasasalamatan" is presented by radio stations Magic 89.9, Wave 89.l and 105.1 and Crossover and Smart Gold and Mossimo. For details call Music Museum 72l 0635, 721 6726 and Headline Concepts551 7253 to 55. http://www.journal.com.ph/news.asp?pid=2&s...day=4&year=2005

Kuh: It’s payback timeSOUNDS FAMILIAR By Baby A. Gil The Philippine Star 11/18/2005 Twenty years ago, Kuh Ledesma was a young nurse moonlighting as a singer with the group called Ensalada at the Calesa Bar. She certainly had all the makings of a future star. Thanks to composer George Canseco though, what would have taken her another year or two to accomplish happened literally overnight. Canseco asked her to record one of his works, Dito Ba?, theme song of the motion picture Miss. X. It became a big hit and launched Kuh to stardom. Kuh became one of Canseco’s favorite interpreters and he continued to provide her with more hit materials over the years. There were Bulaklak based on a French song he adapted for her, other movie themes like Sana Bukas Pa ang Kahapon and Paano Kita Mapasasalamatan and his paean to a great race, Ako ay Pilipino. Kuh has worked with other composers since she started but Canseco remained the most special of them all. In fact, they were working on some new songs when Canseco died a year ago. Canseco succumbed to complications from liver cancer and diabetes on Nov. 19, 2004. Not one to just allow the sad event to pass without paying tribute to his greatness, Kuh has decided to honor his memory and to once more showcase his music with a concert aptly titled Paano Kita Mapasasalamatan. This will be held tomorrow, 8:30 p.m. at the Philippine International Convention Center, exactly a year after Canseco’s death. Kuh will be joined by Basil Valdez, another Canseco favorite with hits like Ngayon at Kailanman and Hanggang Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan plus new pop idol Christian Bautista in the show. Special guests will be other artists whose careers took a swift turn to the top because of a Canseco song. These are Zsa Zsa Padilla to whom he gave Hiram, Dulce, whose signature song is Ako ang Nasawi, Ako ang Nagwagi and Pilita Corrales who recorded Canseco’s first big hit Kapantay ay Langit. Also on hand will be composer and arranger Louie Ocampo who composed Ikaw, which Canseco provided with its beautiful lyrics and Martin Nievera. Now although Martin has a great version of Ikaw, he is one artist who is not usually associated with Canseco. Truth to tell though, he recorded the last song he ever wrote, the moving Nasaan Ka Man. Canseco composed memorable songs. I am sure Paano Kita Mapasasalamatan will be full of memorable performances. Tickets to the show are available at Music Museum, all Ticketworld outlets, at Headline Concepts and tomorrow night at the PICC. http://www.philstar.com/philstar/NEWS200511181703.htm

Basil, Kuh pay tribute to Canseco First posted 11:48pm (Mla time) Nov 18, 2005 By Remy Umerez Inquirer News Service Editor's Note: Published on Page A2-1 of the November 19, 2005 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer THE LATE composer George Canseco left many memorable songs that have touched millions of Filipinos-tunes that have been immortalized by our top recording artists. Kuh Ledesma and Basil Valdez have worked closely with George, and share fond memories of the legendary composer, who succumbed to cancer last year: "He was a very sensitive man. He was always dissatisfied with my interpretations. He would constantly remind me to put more emotion into the songs. He would never leave the recording studio until he was completely satisfied. Nagbabantay siya from start to finish," says Kuh. Duet Before his death, Kuh asked George to put Tagalog lyrics to the Spanish song, "No Me Ames," a duet recorded by Jennifer Lopez and husband Marc Anthony. Ledesma intends to include the song in her forthcoming album to celebrate her 25th year in show business. Blackgold Records released Kuh's debut album in 1980. It contained 10 tracks, eight of which were written by George! Another landmark song for Kuh is "Ako ay Pilipino," a popular ditty that Ledesma always performs for Filipinos overseas. Another prominent interpreter of Canceco's poignant love songs is Basil Valdez. Basil recalls: "Everytime George had a song for me, he would call up and ask me to write down the lyrics. He wrote fast and, remarkably, his songs were all meaningful! His lyrics were measured, as if they were written as poems." Recording scene A favorite song of Basil is "Ikaw," a Sharon Cuneta and Ariel Rivera hit that was originally written for Basil when he was inactive in the recording scene. Basil also treasures "Ama," Canseco's version of "Our Father." Before his death, Canseco wrote the song, "Pakisabi" for Valdez, about a person who missed the chance to tell someone how much he cared. The song will be included in Basil's forthcoming CD. Basil interpreted some of Canseco's most memorable movie theme songs: "Ngayon at Kailanman," "Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan?," "Kastilyong Buhangin" and "Paano Ba ang Mangarap?" Today, a special tribute to George, fittingly titled "Paano Kita Mapasasalamatan?," will be held at the PICC Plenary Hall. Kuh, Basil and Christian Baustista lead the star-studded lineup, which includes special guests Pilita Corrales, Dulce, Zsa Zsa Padilla and Martin Nievera. http://news.inq7.net/entertainment/index.p...&story_id=56991

2 faces of KuhInq7. Net; 11-19-05 LEDESMA: “The first time I heard ‘Dito Ba?’ was from the transistor radio of a labandera.” MANILA—Pop Diva Kuh Ledesma walked into the Inquirer offices with that air—you know, like royalty who had to be welcomed. Then she heard someone yelling, “Where is the photographer?” and the bubble burst. “Ay, may picture-taking ba?” Kuh whispered. “I’m peeling! See the sides of my nose? I’m peeling!” No close-ups, she was promised, and she sighed, relieved. The atmosphere was set for a candid, spontaneous, occasionally hilarious, exchange. Tomorrow at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City, Kuh will perform songs that she loves “dearly” in a show called “Paano Kita Mapapasalamatan.” A tribute to the late great songwriter George Canseco, the show will feature other talents who popularized Canseco classics, including Pilita Corales, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Martin Nievera and Dulce. Also performing are young artists Christian Bautista and harpist Noelle Cassandra. The show will benefit projects of the Philippine Red Cross and a Christian church in Cavite. Excerpts from the interview: INQUIRER: Why Canseco?KUH LEDESMA: Most of my songs when I was just starting were by Canseco. I was asked to put up a show at the PICC on Nov. 19, but that didn’t push through. I said I’d just do a show on that day for Canseco. Days later, when we called up his son, we learned that Nov. 19 was actually the day he died last year! I: What are your memories of Canseco?KL: He’s not strict. But when he was happy with a particular line in a song, no one could change it. It always helped when he was in the studio when we were recording. That was his style—hands on. I think his songs became big hits precisely because he guided his singers. He was really a great lyricist. I didn’t think that “Dito Ba?” was going to be a hit. When I first recorded it, I wasn’t too happy. When I heard the finished product, tapos na and they refused to remix. If you listen to it closely, my voice is kind of thin at lubog sa music. I: Would you have done it differently?KL: Siyempre mas gusto ko lutang ang boses ko. I first heard the recorded song played on the radio of a woman doing her laundry at the back of my apartment in Quezon City. I said to myself, “Wow! It’s finally on the radio.” I didn’t think people really liked listening to it. I just thought I was hearing it because my record label was promoting it. I: What were Canseco’s traits that you found endearing? What have you learned from him?KL: It’s difficult not to make a hit of a George Canseco song. The lyrics are so powerful, so poetic. He was the only composer I know who could write like that. Canseco’s lyrics have harmony, not pilit. I: Where do you think Canseco gets inspiration for all those songs?KL: I can only guess. Maybe from all the girls he loved. He loved women [laughs]. I: And spirits?KL: I saw Canseco’s interview with Cito Beltran [where] he said it was a wrong notion that he could only compose while he was drinking. He actually could not work when he was intoxicated, he said. God is just, you see. He gives gifts and you should not destroy these gifts. Canseco was the most prolific composer of his time. Being a Christian, I realize that the kind of love songs Canseco had written talked about a relationship that was everlasting. You see, he wrote “Ama,” a takeoff from “The Lord’s Prayer.” George had a lot of songs that never got published and recorded. Nag-iba na kasi ang trends ngayon. Nowadays, lyrics are more straight-to-the-point. I think the last recorded Canseco song was “Nasaan Ka Man” by Martin Nievera. This was just before George died. George had a very good relationship with Vic del Rosario, who is a filmmaker. Vic was able to recognize a great talent and gave it the proper exposure. Many good songwriters never find the right venues to showcase their talents. I: So do you plan to record his unpublished work?KL: I don’t know yet. It’s always easier to sell “greatest hits” albums, especially these days (laughs). I: How does one make sure he/she stays long in showbiz?KL: Hard work. You should also be focused and creative. You should learn to collaborate with the best people around; always research on new things. And, of course, pray a lot. I went through stages in my career when I had to sing songs that I really didn’t like. I’ve learned from that. Now I just want to do what I feel I would enjoy doing. I: When you survey the current scene, do you see a junior Kuh?KL: I don’t know. But I must say that some of the young artists are doing very well. What’s important is that an artist knows how to mix art and business. You can’t be too dependent on your manager. You also need to know how to market yourself. Do not relinquish your authority. I’ve learned just recently to never give up my right to decide on the important things in my life. I must say that I look up to Regine [Velasquez]. I think she’s also very big. She makes sure to look after her own interest. Gary [Valenciano] is big, too; with an Angeli by his side [laughs]. She has helped him a lot. Magaling mamili ng asawa si Gary. I: How busy is Kuh’s love life these days?KL: Wala, naghihintay pa ako. I only have a love life with the Lord. I: You’ve become something of a comedian lately in your shows. When did you become so funny?KL: I’ve always been funny. (Inq7.net) http://www.balita.com/entertainment05.php

From Kuh, with loveBy Calvin Murphy P. Neria The Philippine Star 12/03/2005 On Nov. 19, 2004, George Canseco succumbed to cancer. Last Nov. 19, some of OPM’s biggest names led by Kuh Ledesma gathered to pay tribute to the late composer in Paano Kita Mapasasalamatan. If for the sheer star value of the names alone, Paano Kita Mapasasalamatan was a winner of a concert even before the first song had been sung. Imagine gathering on stage Kuh, Basil Valdez, Christian Bautista, Pilita Corrales, Dulce, Zsa Zsa Padilla and Martin Nievera, all of whom not only agreed to perform at the concert, they even donated part of their talent fees to charity. It was obvious that Paano Kita Mapasasalamatan was not just a well-staged tribute, but also a well-thought out one – aside from the performances themselves (many of which were done by the original artists that popularized the songs), there were many little touches here and there that made it a truly special evening. For one thing, there were the video clips featuring OPM artists whose lives and careers Canseco had touched, including Sharon Cuneta, whose very first song, Dear Heart, was written by the late composer. But of course, the musical performances were the most-awaited portions of the night. They got off to an excellent start when Kuh sang Dito Ba and Bulaklak, written for her by Canseco. Kuh was also responsible for the overall concept and direction of the show. The highlights of the show were Canseco hits, like Basil’s medley of Ngayon at Kailanman, Kastilyong Buhangin and Hanggang Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan; Kuh and Christian’s Magkasuyo Buong Gabi and Kailangan Kita; Kuh’s Tubig at Langis, where she was backed up by harpist Noelle Cassandra; Kuh and Dulce’s Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo and Paano Kung Wala Ka Na; Zsa Zsa’s Hiram; and Dulce’s signature song, Ako Ang Nagwagi. The audience had difficulty holding back its tears as Dulce shared her testimony and the story of how, just before his death, she had asked Canseco for permission to change some of the lyrics of the song to better reflect her new-found faith and how God helped her triumph over sin. Other well-applauded performances were Kuh and Zsa Zsa’s Kahapon Lamang and Saan Ako Nagkamali, Martin Nievera’s Nasaan Ka Man (the last song Canseco wrote before his death) and his duet with Kuh of Ikaw. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the repeat of Paano Kita Mapasasalamatan materializes, if not this year, then next year. Besides, the concert will help advance the cause of OPM, a cause that Canseco dedicated his life to. http://www.philstar.com/philstar/NEWS200512031705.htm

"I’m sure it will be interesting to watch these artists lalo na ang Side A singing a Canseco classic dahil wala pang banda ang nagawan ng kanta si George," say ni Kuh.
