Cinemalaya entry "Sta. Niña" features fine performances from Coco Martin and Anita Linda.

MANILA, Philippines – It was a winning weekend for Filipino independent films at international film festivals.

Filipino independent film “Sta. Nina,” headlined by Kapamilya actor Coco Martin, won the Suvarna Chakoram (Golden Crow Pheasant) award at the 17th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK).

Meanwhile, veteran actor Eddie Garcia walked away with the Best Actor trophy at the 55th Asia-Pacific Film Festival for his performance in the film “Bwakaw.” The ceremony was held at the Venetian Macao Resort Hotel in Macau on Saturday.

According to Indian news website The Hindu, the IFFK awards were given out by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy during the ceremony at the Nishagandhi Auditorium, Kanakakunnu held last Friday.

The Emmanuel Palo-directed movie, which also stars Alessandra de Rossi and Anita Linda, bested 13 other films from countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa.

“Sta. Niña” tells the story of Paulino (Martin), who unexpectedly digs up the remains of his two-year-old daughter who had died 10 years ago and found out that she showed no signs of decay. The discovery was perceived by many as a miracle.

The two films were entries to this year's Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival.
