Miss Philippines Megan Young crowned Miss World 2013 in Bali

The 2013 Miss World pageant has been won by Miss Philippines, Megan Young, on the Indonesian island of Bali.

US-born Ms Young, 23, beat 126 other contestants and pledged to be "the best Miss World ever".

The competition was moved to Bali from the capital, Jakarta, because of protests from hardline Muslim groups.

Security for Saturday's event was high in Bali, a resort island with a majority Hindu population, but no further demonstrations were reported.

Miss France, Marine Lorphelin, came second in the contest and Miss Ghana, Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, took third place.

Wearing a glittering gown, Ms Young, who moved to the Philippines at the age of 10, wept as the Miss World sash was put over her shoulder by 2012 winner Miss China.

She told the cheering crowd in Nusa Dua in southern Bali she would "be myself in everything I do, to share what I know and to educate people".

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country and the organisers had originally offered to abandon the contest's bikini round in an attempt to address complaints of pornography and immorality.

Protests were led by the hardline Islamic Defenders' Front (FPI), which had planned to cross to the island from East Java but were prevented when the port was shut late on Friday.

The event, broadcast in 180 countries, was guarded by heavily armed police with water cannon while some 1,000 FPI members held a prayer session at a mosque outside Jakarta.

Miss Philippines crowned Miss World 2013

JAKARTA: Miss Philippines was crowned Miss World 2013 on Saturday at a tightly guarded ceremony in Bali, Indonesia, after the contest was plagued by protests from religious hard-liners and fears that extremist groups could try to disrupt the event.
US-born Megan Young, a 23-year-old studying digital film, accepted the crown from last year’s winner, Wenxia Yu of China, and promised to “be the best Miss World ever.”
Thousands of members of the radical Islam Defenders Front took to the streets over the past month to protest holding the pageant in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, calling it “pornography.”
The protests forced organizers to move the event from a venue outside Jakarta to Nusa Dua in southern Bali, a predominantly Hindu resort island.
Event organizers announced in June that contestants would eschew bikinis this year in favor of sarongs and one-piece swimwear to avoid causing offense.
The embassies of the United States, Britain and Australia issued travel warnings for Indonesia, saying extremist groups could be planning violence to disrupt the pageant.
However, Indonesian police said there were no reports of unrest surrounding the contest on Saturday.
The new Miss World will spend the next year traveling to represent the Miss World Organization and help raise money for its charitable causes.
Marine Lorphelin, a 20-year-old medical student from France, took second place. From Ghana, Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, 23, also a medical student, came third.

Devina DeDiva Apologizes to Megan Young through Twitter

The former assistant teacher claims she made a Twitter account so she could publicly apologize.
Devina DeDiva, a former assistant teacher from India, has apologized for her negative remarks toward Miss World 2013 Megan Young.

Manila Bulletin reported on October 7 that Devina has issued her apology through the biography of a Twitter account believed to be hers.

“Im so sorry @meganbata and to all Filipinos out there. Sorry. I don’t have a Twitter account so I made one just to show my apology,” the statement read.

As of this writing, Devina's Twitter account has been suspended.

Devina sparked outrage among Filipinos after she slammed Megan's victory--the first for the Philippines in Miss World history--on Facebook on September 29, saying that it was a "joke" and branding Filipinos as "maids."

As screenshots of these comments circulated online, Devina became a top local trending topic on October 1. Facebook posts expressing Filipinos' ire toward her also became viral, ABS-CBNNews.com reported.

Manila Bulletin reports that Devina's Facebook account eventually got suspended, and she was allegedly  terminated from her teaching job at a Singapore-based school, which was incidentally run by Filipino supervisors.
