'Tragic Theater' trailer cleared for showing

MANILA - The trailer for "Tragic Theater" has already been cleared for public exhibition, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) said on Thursday.

According to the regulatory agency, the trailer was already given a rating of "Parental Guidance" on its second review last December 11.

Tikoy Aguiluz, the director of "Tragic Theater," earlier lamented on Facebook that MTRCB gave the trailer an X-rating twice, supposedly because it was "too scary."

"Can't believe they gave an X-rating twice to a trailer for a horror film. 'Too scary' was the verdict. Akala ko ba horror film ito?" he said.

An X-rating effectively bans a trailer from being shown in local theaters or on television. The MTRCB, however, has no jurisdiction over materials uploaded online.

Last December 12, producer Viva Films uploaded an "uncut" trailer of "Tragic Theater" on its YouTube page.

It remains to be seen which parts have been excluded from the version of the trailer approved for public exhibition, in time for the film's January 2015 opening.

"Tragic Theater" is based on the G.M. Coronel novel about a group of spirit communicators who attempted to exorcise the Manila Film Center, the rushed construction of which reportedly left more than a hundred workers buried alive in 1981.

The film also stars John Estrada and Christopher de Leon.
