Maja, Jake to be paired in movie for first time

MANILA – Kapamilya stars Maja Salvador and Jake Cuenca are happy to be reunited in a project – this time as a love team.

Salvador and Cuenca will headline the upcoming movie “Status: It’s Complicated,” which will be produced by Regal Films under the direction of Cris Mendez.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Salvador said she feels privileged to be chosen to be Cuenca's leading lady.

“Ngayon siyempre at least nagkaroon ako ng chance na maka-partner naman si Jake. Sa dami ng mga hottest stars ngayon, siyempre maswerte ako na makapareha niya. Mas nakaka-excite kasi love story naman ang gagawin namin ni Jake,” she said.

Salvador and Cuenca first worked together in the fantasy series “Da Adventures of Pedro Penduko" which was shown in ABS-CBN back in 2006.

Their last project together was “Villa Estrella,” a horror movie released in theaters in 2009.

“Matagal na kaming magkaibigan. May ginawa kaming movie, hindi naman kami mag-partner. Excited ako. I’m honored to be her leading man,” Cuenca said.

Both stars have started shooting the movie, which will also feature Paulo Avelino, Solenn Heussaff and Eugene Domingo.

Asked how she feels to work with Heussaff, Salvador said: “Iyon naman ang maganda sa atin. Nakaktrabaho natin 'yung ibang artista kahit sa ibang network.”

Heussaff has appeared in several TV projects for a rival network.

“Mas nakaka-excite gumawa ng pelikula kapag 'yung makakasama mo hindi 'yung palagi [mong nakakasama]. 'Yung meron namang panibago. Pinapanood mo lang sa ibang istasyon, makakasama mo na,” added Salvador.

According to Mendez, “Status: It’s Complicated” is inspired by the original Ishmael Bernal film “Salawahan.”

“It’s about relationship, courtship. Napapanahon pa rin siya. Ginawa namin mas hip, mas contemporary. Siyempre iba na ang mga artista, mas masaya, mas modern,” he said.

Mendez said Salvador’s role was originally portrayed by Rio Locsin, while Cuenca’s character was first played by Matt Ranillo. – from a report by Mario Dumaual, ABS-CBN News

Eugene Domingo has 4, possibly 6, movies set for release for second half of 2013
By Eric T. Cabahug, InterAksyon.com · Wednesday, July 10, 2013 · 9:06 pm

Eugene Domingo fans, rejoice! The actress will have not just one, not two, not even three, but four movies guaranteed for release in the second half of the year.

First up will be next week’s “Tuhog,” to be followed by “Instant Mommy” in August, “Oh My Mamma Mia” in September, and “Kimmy Dora” The Prequel Kiyeme” in the Metro Manila Film Festival in December.

That’s practically a mini-film festival in itself. Eugene, last seen on the big screen in “I Do Bidoo” from August last year, will probably end up being the most prolific and visible major actress in movies in 2013.

And it’s not just the quantity that’s notable but also, and, perhaps more important, the quality and variety of the films. Of the four titles, two are mainstream productions (“Mamma Mia” from Viva Films and “Kimmy Dora” from Star Cinema), one is mainstream-indie or “maindie” (“Tuhog” from Star Cinema’s indie label, Skylight Films), and one is a full-on indie (“Instant Mommy,” a Cinemalaya entry).

Eugene couldn’t be happier. “Gusto ko ‘yun. Ang feeling ko na-establish ko na ang gusto kong image bilang artista na pwede kahit saan, from mainstream commercial movies to indies.”

This also gives her the freedom to experiment with her roles and explore various themes. “Malaya at matapang,” she says. And these four movies are proof of that. Although all are comedies, they have different flavors.

“Tuhog” is a dark comedy about the intersecting lives of three strangers who due to cruel fate find themselves stuck with each other after a tragic bus accident. Eugene co-stars with Jake Cuenca and Enchong Dee. It opens in theaters on July 17.

“Instant Mommy” is a light comedy about a wardrobe mistress in TV commercials who pretends to be pregnant to keep her Japanese fiance. The role of the Japanese fiancé is portrayed by Hollywood-based Japanese actor Yuki Matsuzaki, who actually applied for the role after seeing an announcement that an independent movie in the Philippines is looking for a Japanese actor.

“Instant Mommy” is Yuki’s first Asian film. It will premiere in Cinemalaya before its wide release in August.

“Oh My Mamma Mia,” about the warring mothers of an engaged young couple, is a hard comedy from blockbuster director Wenn Deramas that reunites Eugene with Maricel Soriano.

They co-starred in the 2007 Metro Manila Film Festival entry, the dramedy “Bahay Kubo” for which they won the festival Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress awards.

“Mamma Mia” is also Eugene’s first movie with Wenn since the 2011 Anne Curtis comedy “Who’s That Girl.” It opens on September 18.

“Kimmy Dora: The Prequel Kiyeme” is the third movie in the hit movie series that began in 2009. This time Eugene stars opposite Piolo Pascual, who is also one of the producers of the movie. Writer Chris Martinez will take over the directorial reins from Joyce Bernal, who will stay on as producer.

In fact, chances are, Eugene could have not just four but five or even six movies released before the year is over.

That’s because she has also completed shooting another indie, “Kuwentong Barbero” (Barber’s Tales), written and directed by “Bwakaw” writer-director Jun Lana.

And then she has started working on another Chris Martinez movie, this time for Regal Films — “Status: It’s Complicated”. This reworking of the classic Ishmael Bernal comedy “Salawahan” will also star Paulo Avelino, Solenn Heusaff, and Jake Cuenca. Eugene will portray the Rita Gomez role.

Both movies have no playdates yet.

Loved this film! Although it came off as silly in the trailers,  ang ganda ng story ah! Its got a nice depiction on modern romances, its romantic but not overly cheesy, well acted din. Its a shame it didnt do really well sa box office.

To be fair, mukhang this was the highest grossing film ng Regal (na hindi co-prod) in years.

This was amongst my top films of last year. Gusto kong magkaroon ng DVD copy nito, pati na rin sana ng Salawahan (the original version of this film, which was directed by Ishmael Bernal).
