FROM NOW ON, CALL HER CHARICE

CONGRATS to 15-year old Charice Pempengco. After making waves in the U.S. talk show of Ellen Degeneres, she gained more accolades in the United Kingdom when she guested in the British “Paul O’Grady Show”. In both shows, she belted the “Dreamgirls” song “And I Am Telling You” and she was given a standing ovation.

Now, she’s scheduled to be the only singer among a guest of 10 gifted teeners with different talents in an episode of the “Oprah Winfrey Show” to be shown in May. Charice was just second runner-up in “Little Big Star” where Sam Concepcion was the winner, but look at her now going international no less.

We just hope all these guestings in TV shows abroad will eventually be translated to real fame and fortune. Meaning, her albums will really sell in markets here and abroad. We don’t want her to be a Josephine “Banig” Roberto who was given a warm welcome in the States but eventually faded into oblivion.

Charice has a sob story to tell. She saw how her mom, Racquel (also a former band singer), had a heartrending parting of ways with her dad, who now orders her not to use the family name Pempengco anymore, so she’d just be billed from now on as plain Charice.

    Unstoppable Charice

    STAR WITNESS
    By MARIO V. DUMAUAL

There's still no stopping singing sensation Charice Pempengco after her three unprecedented guestings on the shows of Ellen Degeneres and Paul O'Grady and soon on Oprah this May.

There's still no stopping singing sensation Charice Pempengco after her three unprecedented guestings on the shows of Ellen Degeneres and Paul O'Grady and soon on Oprah this May.

Coming up is the Philippine release next month of her first album with Star Records, featuring her now Internet famous renditions of "And I Am Telling You", " I Will Always Love You" and "I Have Nothing". Also part of the CD lite package produced by Star's Jonathan Manalo are her previous recordings with a European studio last year.

    Encounter with Oprah

The big bonus is Oprah's supposed commitment to Charice to help her promote her album when she gets back to Chicago. "Natuwa naman po ako sa support niya, " Charice told us at her recording session in Quezon City, recounting her unforgettable encounter with the TV empress.

"Dream come true talaga, imagine sabi ko nga kay mommy, ' guesting sa Oprah , si Oprah, the most powerful woman in the world!'". Charice is not yet free to talk about the details of her meeting with Oprah; neither can she confirm the details of a supposed recording deal with esteemed American record producer David Foster.

    Oprah's generosity

But this much she can say, she was given wads of dollars by Oprah after her tour at Harpo Productions. Charice is not revealing how much. Suffice it to say that her mother described it as "malaking tulong."

It was just one aspect of the overwhelming VIP treatment she received in Chicago. Charice Pempengcow hahaha."

The highlight was when Charice opened up to Oprah about her personal struggles. "Nakwento ko that my mom is a single parent... what we went through. I cannot forget what she told me after. Sabi niya, everything will be better!"

Needless to say, she has been asked to guest again on Oprah on a later date. This is really not surprising given the sensational reception accorded Charice in all her international guestings. Just recently, Charice was informed that her Ellen guesting was picked as the most memorable moment on the talk show in a televiewers survey.

The fan who started it all

Of course, Charice will not forget that she owes her immense popularity to the Internet. "Yang youtube na yan, yan ang may sala," she laughs. "Yan ang nag-umpisa ng lahat." She credits one admirer for uploading her video files.

"His name is David Duenas, 22 years old, a nursing student, singer din siya. Kailan ko lang siya personal na nakilala, ang tawag ko nga sa kanya 'special' because he is! Major turning point yung pinag showdown niya sa youtube yung performance namin ng winner ng America's Got Talent ng "And I Am Telling You"."

Before she knew it, the Internet video files took a life of its own with over a million hits, alerting Swedish, Korean record and TV producers and finally making it on the Ellen Degeneres show. The Charice phenomenon continues with the creation of more websites devoted to her. It's the kind of empowerment that can also happen to any brilliant, struggling artist with no well-oiled mainstream machinery.

Even now that an international career is beckoning, Charice is certain that the Philippines will be her home base.

    Re: CHARICE PEMPENGCO

    Charice: From Ellen to Oprah
    FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo
    Tuesday, April 15, 2008

Let's start with the sad(?) news: Henceforth, Charice will be known simply as Charice - not Charice Pempengco as she used to be - because her estranged father (and his family) have asked her to stop using that surname.

Well and good because, according to Charice, who's turning 15 on May 10, the last time she saw her father, Ricky "P," was 12 years ago. That was the time when Charice's mom Raquel and Mr. "P" separated.

"I haven't been in good terms with him since then," said Raquel, who has another child, Carl (13), by him. "I've always been a single mom."

The good news is that, after her landmark guest appearance on Ellen DeGeneres' self-titled US TV show late last year, Charice will soon be seen on yet another popular US TV show, Oprah no less. Charice doesn't know exactly when the Oprah episode will be aired, although Oprah herself has been plugging it (including on YouTube), reminding televiewers "to watch for 10 fantastic kids," one of whom happens to be Charice. The TV teaser said: They may look like ordinary kids but what they are getting ready to do on our stage will blow you away! This you have to see to believe! Coming this May.

So how did Charice get into Oprah?

"Through Mr. David Foster," Charice told Funfare.

Charice met Foster last year. He saw Charice on Ellen and he took pains to contact her. And then Foster asked Charice to sing. Presto! Before Charice knew it, Foster was asking her to record Ordinary World, one of his compositions (Foster has written songs for almost all the big names in the industry, from Celine Dion to Barbra Streisand to Whitney Houston to Josh Groban).

"My newest baby" is how Foster introduces Charice to people.

So fond Foster has become of Charice that he even brought her on his private jet to Las Vegas to watch the farewell concert of Celine Dion. They were seated on the front-center, no less.

It was Foster who brought Charice to the attention of Oprah. "Watch out for her," Foster told Oprah.

During the shoot in Chicago, which lasted for two hours (5 to 7 p.m.) early this month, recalled Charice, she saw Oprah watching from the sidelines. The 10 "fantastic kids" were each asked to perform their forte. One played the guitar, one played the drum, another did a dance exhibition. It was only Charice who sang a song, I Have Nothing (also by Whitney Houston, like I Will Always Love You, one of the two songs Charice sang on Ellen

"She hugged me before the interview portion," Charice said. "Nagulat ako! Natulala ako! Siempre, si Oprah siya, eh!"

Like when Charice guested on Ellen, it was US immigration lawyer and STAR columnist Michael Gurfinkel who facilitated her travel papers. It was also Gurfinkel who was contacted by the Oprah staffer for Charice's guesting.

A third placer in the ABS-CBN talent search Little Big Star in 2006, Charice was discovered by Ellen via the YouTube in which a fan who called herself "False Voice" uploaded a film clip of Charice's performance in the South Korean show Star King. An Ellen staffer saw the YouTube and told DeGeneres about it, prompting her to make a joke on air about giving a reward to anybody who could furnish her the contact number of Charice. Ed Shapiro, Ellen's lawyer, found Charice's website. To make a circuitous story short, Shapiro got in touch with Michael Gurfinkel who rushed the processing of Charice and her mom's US visa. Mother and daughter arrived in the US in the nick of time. On Ellen, Charice sang two songs, I Will Always Love You and And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going (sung by American Idol graduate Jennifer Hudson in the movie version of Dreamgirls).

Between Ellen and Oprah, the Gurfinkels (Michael and wife Millie) managed to book Charice for a guest appearance early this year on The Paul O'Grady Show in London where she sang the same two songs (as requested by O'Grady himself).

After Oprah, Charice will finish recording her debut album (for Star Records). You guessed it: The album is titled simply Charice.

The name Charice sounds even better without Pempengco, doesn't it?

Charice flies to US to attend SIPA; defends self
    By REYMA BUAN-DEVEZA
    abs-cbnNEWS.com

Fifteen-year-old international singing sensation Charice left the country Wednesday for a performance at the 'The Future of Our Community' SIPA’s 36th Anniversary Awards Benefit Dinner in Los Angeles, California.

"We're going to Los Angeles to attend SIPA, magge-guest po ako doon," Charice told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

According to Raquel, mother of Charice, her daughter's guesting on Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA) was made possible by ABS-CBN's TFC (The Filipino Channel).

Search to Involve Pilipino Americans or SIPA was founded in 1972 with a mission to enhance the quality of life for Pilipino Americans and other communities in Historic Filipinotown as well as throughout Los Angeles County.

Aside from Charice, KELP (Kultural Enrichment Language Program) and Natasha Godinez will also be performing.

Charice will stay in US for about a week and will be meeting with "a well-known American artist" in New York, according to one report. The identity of the artist has been witheld.

This year's SIPA honorees are: The Honorable Warren Furutani, California State Assemblymember, 55th District Lingkod Bayan (Public Service); Jannelle So, Broadcast Journalist, Kababayan LA/LA 18/KSCI-TV Gawad Manlilikha (Creative Arts); Filipino American Educators Association of Los Angeles (FAEALA); Bayanihan (Community Support); Eliseo Art Silva, Mural/Visual Artist Gawad Manlilikha (Creative Arts); Jemuel Apelar, Philippine Overseas Olympic Development Committee Tularang Kabataan (Youth Service) and ABS-CBN's very own Raffy L. Lopez, Chief Operating Officer, ABS-CBN Global Ltd. (The Filipino Channel) Kalampusan (Corporate Achievement).

    Oprah, rumors
abs-cbnNEWS.com first broke the story of Charice's guesting on the Oprah Winfrey show two weeks ago.  abs-cbnNEWS.com has now learned that the Oprah Winfrey Show will air its special episode with Charice in US on May 12, 2008.

Charice had performed the song "I Have Nothing" during the taping of her guest appearance on the popular US TV show.

"Isang kanta lang po sa Oprah. Kasi 10 kids kami tapos iyon iyong title ng episode na "World’s Smartest Kids," Charice told abs-cbnNEWS.com, explaining that the episode of Oprah where she guested showcased  children with amazing talents.

The song "I Have Nothing" is included in the album Charice is currently recording under Star Records.

Charice also defended herself against rumors that her success has already gone to her head.

Reports about her supposed 'big-headedness" came out  with allegations that some members of the entertainment press are having difficulty getting interviews with her.

Charice's mother Raquel also came to the former's defense, saying that the young singer has not changed as a person and as daughter. Raquel said that the only change in Charice is that she has become more confident following her international guestings.

    Re: CHARICE PEMPENGCO

    Oprah napabilib ni Charice!
    SHOWBIZ MISMO Ni Cristy Fermin
    Wednesday, April 16, 2008

    * * *

    Charice Pempengco on Ellen

THE 15-year-old singing wunderkind is very busy making her rounds of the top international talk shows, from Sweden, Korea, the United States and, only last week, England, as a sought-after guest on TV shows that beamed her awesome, lung-busting vocal skills globally.

Charice just recently taped a special episode for “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” where she shares the stage with other gifted children. The episode airs in May.

Her most recent appearance was on the “Paul O'Grady Show.”

“Nakakatuwa, pinaghandaan talaga nila,” Charice says, referring to the top-rating British talk-comedy program.

The songs she sang -- the “Dreamgirls” anthem “And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going” and Whitney Houston's “I Will Always Love You -- were exactly what she rendered in her now world-famous stints on “Star King” in South Korea and the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” in the US.

The studio audience on the “Paul O'Grady Show” gave her a standing ovation. She says she was told it was the first time ever.

All the attention would not have been possible, she says, without the single-handed stroke of genius of Dave Dueñas, a.k.a. FalseVoice on the YouTube channel. A 19-year-old nursing student at Perpetual Help College, Las Piñas, who also happens to be a techno geek, Dave uploaded Charice's taped performances on YouTube, the popular video-sharing Web site whose total viewers have reached 79 million as of January this year.

Charice says Dueñas was a complete stranger and only when she sought him out through e-mail did she discover why he fancied her videos. Mas magaling daw ako kaya pinagsama niya yung video namin.” Said videos paved the way for all succeeding uploads now currently seen by people around the globe 24/7.

The phenomenal exposure has paid off on a slow but steadily increasing rate.

The guest stint with Paul O'Grady reportedly happened on the recommendation of David Foster, the music industry stalwart who has produced albums for the likes of Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Josh Groban.

Charice laughs, saying Foster took her by the hand and introduced her as “my new singer” to the American press when they attended a high-profile show biz affair.

Charice comes out with first album

    By REYMA BUAN-DEVEZA
    abs-cbnNEWS.com

International singing sensation Charice announced that her most-awaited first album under Star Records will be released this week.

For the event, Charice sang Whitney Houston's hit "I Have Nothing,"  which is also included in her self-titled debut album.

She also performed her version of The Filipino Channel's (TFC) theme song "Lipad ng Pangarap" in front of Pinoys and Americans.

Charice also said that she is proud being a Filipino and proud to be part of ABS-CBN's Team Kapamilya.

"Sobrang proud po ako na naging Pilipino ako at sobrang proud na Kapamilya ako, ako ay proud Kapamilya at solid Kapamilya,"

Charice just finished recording her album before she left the Philippines Thursday, April 24 to appear on SIPA's Benefit Dinner.

The young singer's album will include two original songs titled "Born to Love You Forever" and "It Can Only Get Better" composed especially for her by Swedish song artists.

The album will also include a revival of Whitney Houston's "And I'm Telling You," which paved the way for the child singer's international recognition through the YouTube.com.

    Charice on Oprah

After her successful appearance in Ellen DeGeneres's talk show "Ellen" last year,  Charice will once again charm audiences in the US and the rest of the world with her upcoming performance in the highest-rating television talk show, "Oprah".

abs-cbnNEWS.com learned that her guesting on Oprah will be aired this coming May 12.

Last April 8, Charice also appeared in London's popular  program "Paul O'Grady Show.

Just as she did in the Ellen DeGeneres show in December 2007, Charice also delighted audiences in Britain with her performance on the said TV talk show.

A report said that after her debut album, ABS-CBN's Star Records is cooking up a new singing adventure for the child singer.

    Child singer releases debut album

INTERNATIONAL singing icon Charice Pempengco has announced the release of her self-titled debut album "Charice" under Star Records this week.

ABS-CBN reports said the child singer made the announcement during her appearance before "Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (Sipa)" Benefit Dinner in Los Angeles, California last week.

    *  *  *

International singing sensation Charisse celebrates Mother’s Day in Hawaii with the most important person in her life -- her loving mom Mommy Raquel.

Charisse, is now in Hawaii as a guest for ABS-CBN’s noontime game show “Wowowee”, which regularly stages productions for Filipinos abroad.

“Mommy, thank you sa lahat. Naglalaro kami,” the young singer said.

Charisse said that she will never forget the first day she and Mommy Raquel visited the United States. For her, it was a most remarkable event of her life with her mom (her parents are separated). She also considers the trip the beginning of her success.

“Kumbaga pagbaba pa lang namin ng airplane tapos nakita na namin welcome to the United States of America, nandoon lang kami naka-steady lang kami doon, tapos sabi  ni mama “Bi” (for baby) nasa Amerika na tayo, iyon ang pinaka,”  Charisse said.

She also said that she still hasn't bought her mom a gift, but one day, she hopes to give her a house and lot.

Iyong unique, iyong naiiba,” she said.

On the show, Charisse sang “A Song for Mama” , which was first popularized by the R&B group BoyzIIMen. The song is also included in her eponymou debut album that was released May 4 on “ASAP ’08.”
