RUSHES SUNDAY The year of living scandalously
Big Special
By Bayani San Diego Jr., Marinel Cruz, Pocholo Concepcion Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 00:01am (Mla time) 01/06/2008 MANILA, Philippines - There you go. Infamy seems to have become a profession in these parts―and it looks, as we recall the year just past, like a very competitive one. *snipped* Top of the crop But as far as covering foreign material was concerned, Raymond Lauchengco’s jazz-inspired “Full Circle: The Big Band Album” (Viva) was tops. It allowed listeners to appreciate, in a new light, a bunch of ’80s pop hits― Jo Boxer’s “Just Got Lucky,” Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go,” Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up,” etc.― which, in their original versions, might never have appealed to current music consumers. http://showbizandstyle.inquirer.net/entertainment/entertainment/view_article.php?article_id=110592

Aduna kini career single nga "Just Got Lucky". "I feel so lucky coming home to Viva after so many years. Everyone na nasusubaybayan ang career ko knows that I started my career sa showbiz with Viva Films (via Bagets, Bagets 2, Saan Darating ang Umaga?, Cross My Heart, Hot Shots, Bukas Luluhod ang Mga Tala). Matagal din kasi akong nawala sa circulation because marami akong gustong gawin. Now, I'm coming back to my first love which is singing," say ni Raymond sa PangMasa. I'm with Viva ulit. I said it is for recording and live shows. I signed up with Viva. "I had my share of good memories when I was acting both for TV and the movies. Ang hindi ko lang ma-take even before was the long wait on the set. Para kasing waste of time for me. More on singing talaga ako ulit,"sa singer pa. "We are both hands-on sa baby. But mostly si Mia ang nag-aalaga because she is crazy about Natalie. Kahit na nga may yaya ‘yung baby, she still wants to take care of things. " Perfect timing kasi may baby na kami for Christmas. Tapos kakalipat lang namin sa pina-renovate kong bahay kaya tamang-tama lahat for Christmas. We have a new home, a new baby and a new career to look forward to in 2008," panapos ni Raymond. http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20071222113&type=2

Welcome back, Raymond http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=2007122666&type=2

Raymond latebloomer
By: Remy Umerez A Little Bit SHOPPERS at the Podium last January 5, Saturday, stopped for a while to listen to original "bagets" star Raymond Lauchengco as he goes full blast this 2008 on reviving his singing career. We observed various feedbacks from the crowd. “Ang galing pa rin niyang kumanta. What a cool and soothing voice. “ “Kaanu-ano kaya niya si Menchu Lauchengco?” “Was he in the cast of Repertory’s ‘Sweeney Todd’ during his teen years?” “Sana, mag-duet sila ni Shawie (Sharon Cuneta).” “I hope he makes a movie comeback soon.” We talked briefly to Raymond before the mini show and he said: “I am really a late bloomer in almost everything. I never took my singing seriously when I started with Viva. When you are 17, your mind is never set on one thing. I was a painfuly shy person at nalito ako sa pacing ng showbiz. Casting me in the movie "Bagets" was fine and it was fun pero ‘di ko alam kung seryoso akong talaga sa pag-aartista.” “Even in falling in love and getting married, it took me quite a time to settle down and have a family of my own. I became a father at 42 and facing the responsibilities that comes along with parenthood is a real challenge for me. You hate your parents telling you don’t do this, don’t do that, but I guess I have to adopt the same attitude in raising my daughter. Personally, I am a fulfilled person and my life has reached full circle.” Incidentally, "Full Circle" is the title of Raymond’s new CD under Viva Records, the very same record company which produced his early hits “So It’s You” and “Farewell.” In "Full Circle," Raymond takes his music on a different level as he sings them with swinging band arrangements. It features the popular songs of the 80s which Raymond has truly grown to love. Choice cuts include: "Walking on Sunshine," Just Got Lucky, Let’s Go, "Always Something There to Remind Me," "You To Me are Everything" and "Wake Me Up Before You Go" by the Wham. For Raymond, "Full Circle" is going down memory lane twice over. People's Journal http://www.journal.com.ph/index.php?issue=2008-01-11&sec=3&aid=45447

Raymond Lauchengco revives songs of his youth
By Remy M. Umerez Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 19:59:00 03/07/2008 MANILA, Philippines—Not much has been heard about former “Bagets” star, Raymond Lauchengco, since his days as an actor in Viva productions two decades ago. Recently, aside from performing in corporate shows, he also ventured into photography. So, it was a pleasant surprise to meet Raymond again when his latest album, “Full Circle,” was launched by Viva Records at the Shangri-La mall. He shares: “I thought I’d given up singing for good until I bumped into Boss Vic del Rosario, who encouraged me to make a comeback in recording. He said he had a good concept in mind, and that he wouldn’t take no for an answer.” As it turned out, Del Rosario’s concept was, indeed, unique: Viva’s big boss wanted Raymond to revive the music of the ’80s, which the singer loved, because he grew up with those songs! But, what really excited him was the idea of recording those pop hits—with the big-band sound! Balladeer The balladeer behind OPM hit songs like “Farewell” and “So It’s You” felt like he was venturing on a new career. “I was not serious with my singing career then. I recorded for fun—and because Viva told me so. Today, I have acquired a more serious approach to singing.” The album is produced by Mia Lauchengco and Alwyn Cruz, with Vic Oria as musical director. In “Full Circle,” Raymond, accompanied by a nine-piece band, dishes out songs like the Go-Gos’ “Head Over Heels,” Katrina and the Waves’ “Walking on Sunshine,” Jo and the Boxers’ “Just Got Lucky” and Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-go.” Raymond is optimistic that his new versions of those popular hits will delight lovers of ’80s music! http://showbizandstyle.inquirer.net/entertainment/entertainment/view/20080307-123412/Raymond-Lauchengco-revives-songs-of-his-youth

Entertainment (as of 2:56 PM) April 3, 2008 Raymond Lauchengco would rather be Bennett than Buble
By REYMA BUAN-DEVEZA abs-cbnNEWS.com Singer Raymond Lauchengco said that he does not really mind having his singing style compared to that of Michael Buble's but he also said that he was influenced by the same musical greats the inspired the popular Candian jazz singer.
"It's okay, there's no problem.... Well actually I prefer, to be Frank Sinatra, 'yung Tony Bennett 'yun ang original 'yun ang pioneer, 'yun ang mga idolo ko," Lauchengco told abs-cbnNews.com Thursday morning, inside ABS-CBN compound after his television guesting to promote his latest CD,"Full Circle: The Big Band."
(I'd rather be compared to Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett. They're the originals, they're my idols.)
Lauchengco has been in the music business for two decades and said that he already sang in his style way before Buble became popular.
(I've been doing this lounge style even before Buble. Maybe it's Buble who repackaged himself to sing like Raymond Launchengco. That's a joke.)
Graduation anthem Ever since Raymond's hit, the valedictory pop tune "Farewell", was used in the graduation scene for the iconic 1984 teen flick "Bagets", graduation rites in the Philippines are never complete without playing that song after the ceremonies.
"Oo nga, tuwing March nabubuhay. I think it's one of the, ang tawag kasi sa kanta na ganyan ay institutional.
(Yes, the song gets a revival once March comes around. It's become what they call an institutional song. These are songs that have become inseparable from the occasion they refer to, just like Christmas songs.)
Raymond himself doubts whether he would be able to record another song that would be come a cultural touchstone.
"Mahirap, mahirap it's very difficult to come up, siguro once and a lifetime lang a singer gets to find a song like that. I dont know if that can be done," he said.
80s retro Raymond became famous as one of the teen stars in "Bagets", the same film that launched the careers of stars like Aga Muhlach, William Martinez, JC Bonnin, and now Quezon City vice mayor Herbert Bautista.
While he is not closing his doors to acting jobs, singing remains his greatest passion.
"I'm not saying no (to acting), but my priority is singing. But now, if they offer me something why not? I mean my doors are open. But right now I'm full time in singing."
Raymond is being busy promoting his new album and is preparing for a concert this coming May 16 and 17 at the Music Museum with his friends from the 80s.
"On May 16 and 17 I'm doing a concert sa Music Museum with my friends from the 80s: Randy Santiago, Gino Padillo, Louie Herredia. We are going to sing, perform the Greatest Hits of 80s," he said.
The singer is happily married to his wife Mia Rocha. They have a beautfiful six-month-old baby named Nathalie. http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=113917

80s’ pop icons in one concert
The 80s gave us some of local music scene’s best and most enduring artists. Four of those artists will return to the concert scene via "Greatest Hits of the 80’s," a two-night show at the Music Museum on May 16 and 17). Remember Gino Padilla? His voice gave life to the hit singles "Close You and I" - which was used in a toothpaste commercial back in the day — "I Believe In You" and "Let The Love Begin." Gino’s most recent projects include an album produced by none other than the Megastar, Ms. Sharon Cuneta herself. The album, bannered by the first single "Keeping The Momories Alive," is titled "Hands Of Time" and is available at all leading record bars. Louie Heredia also made his mark in the 1980’s - in 1985, to be precise - with songs like "Can’t Find No Reasons," "Iisang Damdamin," "Nag-iisang Ikaw" and "Una At Huling Mamahalin." Back in the day, he also hosted many TV shows like the phenomenal "Lunch Date." Actor-singer Raymond Lauchengco also rose to prominence in the 1980’s, thanks largely in part to his role in the iconic 1980’s teen movie "Bagets." His hits include "In Need You Back," "Farewell," "Saan Darating Ang Umaga" and "So It’s You." After a brief career hiatus, during which he was sorely missed by the industry, Raymond went back to Viva Artists Agency — the same company that launched his career. The title of Raymond’s latest album - a collection of songs from the 1980’s rearranged big-band style — Full Circle is very appropriate sinxe he came "full circle" when he returned to Viva. Who can forget Randy Santiago and those shades of his? Randy may be a director now — he recently helmed the ABS-CBN sitcom "Aalog-alog" - but back in the day he was an in-demand singer and dancer. He appeared in several musical variety shows and released several hit singles of his own, including "Hindi Magbabago," "Para Sa ‘Yo," "Tuloy Pa Rin" and the ultimaten ladies’ man song "Babaero." "Greatest Hits of the 80’s" is produced by Viva Concerts and Events. http://www.mb.com.ph/ENTR20080415121880.html

Showtime 04/17/2008 Pop goes the ’80s A decade characterized by funny looking clothes and weird makeup – that’s what most people now think of the 1980s. How quickly they forget that it was also the decade when some of the local music scene’s best and most enduring artists started their careers. In fact, four of those artists will return to the concert scene via Greatest Hits of the ’80s, a two-night show at the Music Museum on May 16 and 17. Louie Heredia also made his mark in the 1980s with songs like “Can’t Find No Reasons,” “Iisang Damdamin,” “Nag-iisang Ikaw” and “Una at Huling Mamahalin.” The many albums he released were met with critical and commercial success, which helped him earn many Gold and Platinum Record awards. Back in the day, he also hosted many TV shows like the phenomenal Lunch Date. LONGEST concert ever ang Greatest Hits of the 80’s. Parang napakalaking concert ang gagawin ng Viva Concert and Events na Greatest Hits of the 80’s. It has four big male singing stars of the eighties na sina Raymond Lauchengco, Gino Padilla, Louie Heredia and Randy Santiago na kahit sila lang sandamakmak ang collective hits. Tapos two night concert pa ito, on May 16 and 17 sa Music Museum from the stage direction of Jun Jun Santiago. We say big dahil nang nagpipilian na ng repertoire, personal hits pa lang nila, aabot na ng two hours. Kaso they still have to sing a lot of songs from the 80’s so when everything was compiled, baka raw umabot ito ng four to five hours. Nang nag-decide sila to cut and trim here and there, tatlong oras pa rin ang ita-tagal ng concert so sabi nila hanggang doon na lang. For tickets call Ticket World at 891 9999. Nanghingi na kami ng tiket sa Viva Concerts & Events para sa Greatest Hits of the ’80s concert nina Randy Santiago, Louie Heredia, Raymond Lauchengco, at Gino Padilla sa Music Museum sa May 16 at 17. Hindi namin palalampasin ito’t songs of the ’80s ang repertoire, na gustung-gusto namin. Sa concert, muli nating mapapakinggan ang Closer You and I at Let the Love Begin ni Gino; Iisang Damdamin at Nag-iisang Ikaw ni Louie Heredia; Saan Darating ang Umaga, Farewell at I Need You Back ni Raymond; at Babaero at Hindi Magbabago ni Randy. Tickets at P2,250, P2,000 and P1,400 are available at Ticketworld (891-9999). People's Tonight

Kaya naman nagkaroon ng ideya ang Viva Concerts and Events na ibalik ito by staging a show kung saan ay pagsasama-samahin ang apat sa magagaling nating singers nu’ng ’80s. Kasama ni Raymond sina Gino Padilla, Louie Herredia and Randy Santiago sa two-night concert na gaganapin sa Music Museum on May 16 and 17, Greatest Hits of the ’80s. Sa nasabing dalawang gabing concert, muling bubuhayin ng apat ang dekada ’80 as they perform hits of that decade, both local and foreign. The show will be directed by Jun-jun Santiago with Noel Cruz of Serenity band as musical director. Jake Tordesillas and Kaye Brondial share writing duties while Ratsky, People’s Journal and DWTM pitch in as sponsors. Nostalgic trip
Viva Concerts and Events is staging "Greatest Hits of the ‘80s" at the Music Museum on May 16 and 17. The two-night show will see Gino Padilla, Louie Heredia, Raymond Lauchengco and Randy Santiago singing some of their biggest hits, with a few surprises thrown in. Gino is the voice that sold a thousand tubes of toothpaste back in the day. Well, not really, but his signature song "Closer You and I" was used in a toothpaste commercial once. The exposure helped his follow-up singles "I Believe in You" and "Let the Love Begin" become just as successful. Gino has a new album "Hands of Time," which he co-produced with Sharon Cuneta. For his part, Louie’s hits – like "Iisang Damdamin," "Nag-iisang Ikaw" and "Una at Huling Mamahalin" – served as the soundtrack for many a guy courting a girl back in the day. These days, he is actually more focused on developing his talent in the kitchen. His specialty? Paella, which you can order from him. So engrossed is he with this new business venture of his that he went into semi-retirement. However, when Viva contacted him, he agreed to come out of semi-retirement. Raymond Lauchengco will add a little something extra with stirring renditions of all his old hits, including "I Need You Back," "Farewell," "Saan Darating ang Umaga" and "So It’s You." That he will participate in this show is fitting, since he started his career in the 1980’s via the teen movie "Bagets," which was also produced by Viva – and he has also released a new album, "Full Circle." Meanwhile, "Babaero," one of Randy Santiago’s biggest hits, was the song for all ladies’ men. Randy – who of late has ventured into directing – will be singing "Babaero" and his other hits, so if you’ve missed "Hindi Magbabago," "Para Sa ‘Yo" and "Tuloy Pa Rin" live, then grab tickets to "Greatest Hits of the ‘80s" ASAP. Produced by Viva Concerts and Events, it is directed by Jun-Jun Santiago, with Noel Cruz of Serenity Band on hand as the musical director. Jake Tordesillas and Kaye Brondial share writing duties.
