    Charice’s ‘white’ holiday in NY
    FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo
    Friday, January 18, 2008

After she guested on Ellen DeGeneres' show in December last year, Charice Pempengco and her mom, Raquel, flew back home in the morning of Dec. 23 and rushed that same afternoon to Seoul to guest on the talent-search show Star King and to spend Christmas there. Before New Year, mother and daughter came back. Charice guested on ASAP, Boy & Kris and other shows of ABS-CBN (the network which aired Little Big Star search in 2005 where Charice placed third  to Sam Concepcion).

And then, she simply disappeared. Guess where Charice and her mom went - yes, to New York to meet with...Oops! Funfare is not supposed to reveal details of the "confidential" meeting yet.

"Something big is coming up," said Funfare's Big Apple DPA.

Mother and daughter left last Jan. 9 and they flew back last night euphoric with memories of their first trip to New York, also made possible by immigration lawyer and STAR columnist Michael Gurfinkel who processed their visas during their trip to L.A. on Dec. 13 last year for Ellen's show. He accompanied Charice to Ellen's show, and he and his wife Millie welcomed Charice and Raquel as their guests in their Beverly Hills home for two weeks.

In the meantime, all Funfare can tell you is that Charice and Raquel had a grand time at the Big Apple.

"At last," Charice was quoted by the Funfare DPA as saying, "I touched my first snow. I even tasted it! Parang marshmallow!"

They rode the ferry to the Liberty Island and saw the Statue of Liberty up close, strolled around Central Park, marveled at the dazzling lights in Times Square, and watched a play on Broadway.

By coincidence, Raquel celebrated her birthday on Jan. 10, a day after their arrival in New York.

"It was my mom's best birthday ever," gasped Charice, "and I'll never forget my first visit to New York. Next time, I hope to bring along my brother Carl."

Filipino singers breaking into international stardom

    By: Aster Amoyo

    If I Know

EA Salonga was the  very first Filipino artist to put the Philippines in the entertainment map of the world when she was recruited by Cameron Mackintosh to play the lead role of Kim from the award-winning musical play, “Miss Saigon” which was first staged in London in 1989 and on to Broadway earning for her various awards as Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical  which include   Laurence Olivier, Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle.  She also played the role of Eponine in the Broadway production of “Les Miserables”.

She also performed the song “A Whole New World” (of Disney’s “Alladin)” in the 65th Annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles, California, where the song won an Oscar.  Lea sang the song in the movie as the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in 1992 and for “Mulan” in 1998 and more notable international projects followed.

Another Filipino singer, Marlene de la Peña, made it really big in Japan in the  late 70’s to 80’s.  Freddie Aguilar’s “Anak” made its mark in the international music scene when it was interpreted and recorded in over 80   languages by different foreign artists.  Asia’s Queen of Songs, Pilita Corrales was the first Filipino singer-performer to have performed at the Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas in the ‘70’s.  She also wowed Australia where one street was named after her.

The late Reycard Duets (Rey and Carding)  also left a mark at the Las Vegas strip during their prime (70’s to 80’s) while S.O.S. or the Society of Seven (where Martin Nievera’s dad, Bert Nievera started out) was already  wowing crowds at the Outrigger Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii for decades.  When Bert left the group to re-settle in the Philippines, Jun Polistico took over and eventually,  the late Gary Bautista replaced Jun.  Even up to his death, Gary was performing. (They’re now performing at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas with Lani Misalucha.—Ed.)

We’ve heard of other Filipino artists making waves in the international music scene but their achievements were not as big as Lea’s.

Due to advance technology, Internet has become an important part of our daily lives.  Fourteen-year-old ABS-CBN’s “Little Big Star” third placer Charice Pempengco became an overnight sensation when her rendition of Whitney Houston’s hit, “I Will Always Love You” was posted on YouTube which brought to the attention of Ten Songs Productions in Sweden.

In June last year, she recorded seven songs on Stockholm which included three cover songs, Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” and Shakespeare Sister’s “Stay” plus four original songs, “Amazing,” “All The Money in the World,” “It can Only Get Better” and “Born to Love You Forever”.  A few months later, the music video of Charice singing “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” by Dreamgirls was again posted on YouTube which paved the way for her to get invited by Seoul Broadcasting System, the biggest TV network in South Korea to perform in “Star King,” a popular talent show in that country where she sang “And I Am Telling You”.          That music clip was re-posted again on YouTube which led  her to American TV network’s “E!s”.  Her Star King performance in South Korea  was featured in The Daily Ten with the headline, “A Star is Born” on November 14, 2007 followed by “Queen of the Week” on the Hollywood Royalty segment and “A Queen is Born” on November 16.  It was also fea ured in “The Ellen Degeneres Show” on its November 28, 2007 episode.

In that episode, the host showed web videos of different people she would like to have as guests on her show.  This prompted Ellen to personally invite Charice to perform on her show.  And on December 19, 2007, the young singer sang her already popular  version of  Dreamgirls’  ”And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” and Whitney’s “I Will Always Love You” where she was given a standing ovation  by  the audience on both songs.

Now under contract with ABS-CBN’s Star Records, heard that an American record  producer has already shown interest in signing up Charice.

While Charice is on her way to international fame, another Filipino,  forty-year-old rock artist and lead vocalist of The Zoo (being managed by TV director Bert de Leon), Arnel Pineda is   on the verge of international recognition after he was picked out via Internet’s YouTube as the newest lead vocalist of America’s rock band, Journey, the group behind the  classic hits such as “Open Arms,” “Faithfully,” “Eversince The World Began,” “Separate Ways,” ‘Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Who’s Crying Now,” “Anyway You Want It” and more.

Come February 1, Arnel is U.S. bound to face a bigger challenge in his musical career.

“Dreams do come true,” he enthused after his electrifying farewell performance with his former band, Zoo at the Hard Rock Cafe in Makati last Friday night.

The 5’3" rock artist is just a simple guy who came from a poor family.  But his dreams and visions are bigger than he could imagine.

“Don’t stop believing,” that has always been the mantra of Arnel since he focused on his singing career at a very young age.

He first joined Hijos Band which eventually evolved into the AMO Band.  He also tried his luck in Hong Kong but came  back to the Philippines after his separation from his former live-in partner.  He was so devastated to the extent of destroying his voice. When he had his throat examined, he was informed by the doctors that he will never regain his good voice again and he can’t be singing anymore.

“Pakiramdam ko noon, kalaban ko ang mundo.  Hindi ako makapaniwala because singing is my life,” says Arnel.

But his will to regain his voice remained.  After six months of rehabilitation, he continued singing and touring until he was signed up as a solo artist by a major record label but luck was still elusive to him until he crossed paths with TV director Bert de Leon in Hong Kong.

De Leon convinced Arnel and his mentor, Monet Cajipe to return to Manila and form a new band called Zoo which was immediately signed up by MCA Records headed by music stalwart, Ricky Ilacad (OctoArts’ big boss younger brother).  Zoo released their debut album called “Zoology” (with “Pain in My Heart” as its carrier single)   late last year.  “Pain In My Heart” is Zoo’s guitarist’s (Monet Cajipe)  original composition.  The music video of the song, directed by Gino Nacianceno was premiered last January 13 on MYX.

Despite Arnel’s leaving Zoo to embark on a bigger journey, the band formed by Bert de Leon will continue with its new lead vocalist, Reujenson Lista together with Emil Bondoc (bass), Edgar Mendoza (keyboards) and Nathaniel Baruelo (drums).

Arnel, on the other hand, will be facing a tough schedule ahead which include rehearsals, recordings and tours with his newfound ‘family’, The Journey.

Charice Pempengco loses passport to Bukas Kotse Gang

    By REYMA BUAN-DEVEZA
    abs-cbnNEWS.com

When robbers strike, not even the country's pride is spared. This is what international young star-singer Charice Pempengco learned the hard way after she lost her passport and other valuables to suspected Bukas Kotse Gang members while eating dinner in Calamba, Laguna Wednesday night.

Pempengco said she and her mother, Raquel, had stopped for dinner at Tuding's Restaurant in Calamba with their driver and helper. After 30 minutes, they returned to their Toyota Hi-Ace van (XGM-508) and were suprised to discover that her mom's black Lacoste bag was missing.

Pempengco said the bag contained two mobile phones (p910i and T610), passports, ATM card and the keys to their house.

She said they immediately went to a police station and reported the incident. An unidentified witness said he saw three men circling the area before the robbery.

Pempengco is now asking the public to help her recover their passports, which would allow her to continue guesting in concerts overseas. "Just please return the passports, not the cellphone or the other things but just the passports," Pempengco begged.

Pempengo has scheduled guest appearances on ABS-CBN variety show ASAP '08 this Sunday and in Wowowee on March 15 and 17.

Pempengco, who turns 15 this May, was first discovered after placing third in ABS-CBN talent competition "Little Big Star."

She earned raves when she appeared in US talkshow "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" where she sang "And I am Telling You" from the musical Dreamgirls.

After her performance the studio audience gave her a standing ovation while host DeGeneres remarked: "You're amazing." Degeneres also gave Pempengco an iPod after learning that she had lost hers during her flight to the US.

Will Salisi Gang derail Charice’s guesting in London show?
    By Ricky Lo
    Friday, February 29, 2008

Now it can be told: Charice Pempengco is being invited to guest in the Paul O'Grady Show in London, which is just as popular in that country as Ellen DeGeneres' self-titled show in the US.

This was the "secret" first mentioned by Funfare Update several issues ago in the story about Charice and her mom Raquel's trip to New York early this year to negotiate with a recording company and at the same time to celebrate Raquel's birthday.

In that New York trip, the first for the mother and daughter, they were accompanied by immigration lawyer and STAR columnist Michael J. Gurfinkel who fast-tracked the processing of their US visa to enable them to keep their date with Ellen.

As we all know, Charice's Ellen guesting, which left DeGeneres teary-eyed, was a hit.

But Charice and Raquel's trip to London might be derailed by a Salisi Gang which victimized them Wednesday night in Barrio Real, Calamba, Laguna, while they were having dinner at a restaurant. The gang took with them the Pempengcos' bag containing two cell phones, wallets and, the most valuable items inside, their passports.

Mother and daughter are scheduled to leave for London second week of this month but they have yet to apply for British visas.

Charice and Raquel, together with the Manila office of Gurfinkel, are appealing to the Salisi Gang members to please, please, please return the passports (never mind the other items). The gang members, who must also come from Laguna, should know who Charice is and they should take heart. (Note: The culprits may get in touch with Norrie of Gurfinkel's office at landline 894-0239. Don't worry, everything will be confidential.)

May mga nag-suggest na si Charice Pempengco ang pakantahin ng Lupang Hinirang sa laban nina Manny Pacquiao at Juan Manuel Marquez sa Las Vegas sa March 15.

Why not?

Will Disney be Charice’s next stop?
    FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo
    Saturday, March 1, 2008

First, the bad news: Up to now, Charice Pempengco and her mom Raquel haven't gotten back their passports which were stolen along with other valuables by a Salisi Gang while they were having dinner Wednesday night in Barrio Real, Calamba, Laguna.

Now, the good news: Mother and daughter will get their new passports on March 7 and, hopefully, their British visas in time for their trip to London second week of March to finalize Charice's guesting on The Paul O'Grady Show (the British counterpart of the popular US TV show Ellen, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, in which Charice guested in late December last year).

And still more good news: Mother and daughter are scheduled to fly to New York for the negotiation with Disney which is interested in signing up Charice. Representing the Pempengcos in the negotiation is lawyer Edward Shapiro, the same guy who made it possible for Charice to guest on Ellen. If ever an agreement is reached, Charice will not just do a record for Disney but also appear in Disney projects, including High School Musical 3 which stars another Filipina, the controversial Vanessa Hudgens.

Well, good luck, Charice! And may you bring home the bacon from London and from New York.

    Charice’s passport

From correspondent Niña Catherine Calleja in Southern Luzon:

CAMP VICENTE LIM, LAGUNA—-Child singer and YouTube sensation Charice Pempengco lost her passport and some valuables to a “bukas-kotse gang” while she had dinner in a restaurant in Calamba City on Wednesday.

Coming out of Tuding’s Restaurant in Real village at around 9 p.m., Pempengco and her mother Raquel found out that their Toyota van was forcibly opened, said Supt. Nestor Dela Cueva, Calamba police chief.

Among their missing possessions were two passports, two camera phones, jewelry and ATM cards.

Pempengco, 14, lives in Cabuyao, next to Calamba. She sent out an urgent plea on radio and TV on Friday for the return of the passports, saying, she was set to leave for London in a week for a television guesting.

Charice guesting in London 'not yet final'

    By REYMA BUAN-DEVEZA

International singing sensation Charice Pempengco said that her trip to London to guest on "The Paul O' Grady Show" is not yet final.

"No confirmation daw po muna yung London. Baka daw po maudlot. Saka na daw po yun kapag nakapunta na po ako doon," Pempengco told abs-cbnNEWS.com through a text message.

Pempengco was recently reported to be planning a couple of business trips to London and New York.

Reports had said she will fly to London for a television guesting on "The Paul O' Grady Show," said to be the British counterpart of the well-known US television show "Ellen," hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.

Pempengco's singing prowess caught international attention after appearing on De Generes' show last December.

The young singer also said in a phone interview that her trip to New York with her mom for a negotiation with Disney has likewise not been finalized.

"Yung sa Disney wala pong confirmation, hindi pa po 'yon sure hindi ko pa alam," Pempengco explained.

Reports had also said Disney is interested in signing up Pempengco for a record deal, and an appearance in the series "High School Musical".

"Nabasa ko nga po yung (report), nagulat din nga po ako," Pempengco said.

According to Pempengco, she was really scheduled to fly to London this month, but it was postponed since she lost her passport to thieves.

The singer said that she has acquired a new passport, and that she hopes that her trip to London will still push through.

Pempengco lost her passport and other valuables to suspected Bukas Kotse Gang members while eating dinner in Calamba, Laguna on February 27.

Young Filipina Singer seeking record deal with US Record Producer
    Feb. 19, 2008

LOS ANGELES — Charice Pempengco, the 15-year-old young singing sensation who recently wowed the world by guesting at the Ellen DeGeneres’ TV show, is reportedly in talks with no less than the legendary music producer Clive Davis. Charice Pempengco arrived in New York recently and is in the processs of inking a recording deal with star record producer Clive Davis.

Charice is also reportedly meeting with pianist, producer, composer and arranger David Walter Foster. Foster's producing credits include songs on such albums as Celine Dion's Grammy Award-winning "Falling Into You" and the two hit singles, "Because You Loved Me" and "To Love You More." He also produced Natalie Cole's "Unforgettable". From 1994-1997, four of his productions - "Unbreak My Heart" (Toni Braxton), "I Will Always Love You" (Whitney Houston), "I Swear" (All-4-One), "Because You Loved Me" (Celine Dion) each reached No.1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart for 42 weeks.

Foster's musical talent of synthesized sounds have made it possible for him to produce a record almost single-handedly. He plays everything from drums to cellos on his computerized keyboards, hires a studio singer to sing the vocals and then present the polished product to recording artists to show them how their song would sound like. In fact, he did just that with "I Will Always Love You" for Whitney Houston.

Clive Jay Davis is an American record producer and a leading music industry executive. From 1967-72 he was the President of Columbia Records, was the founder and president of Arista Records in the late 1970s through 2000 until founding J Records. Currently Davis is the Chairman and CEO of the RCA Music Group (which includes RCA Records, J Records and Arista Records), Chairman and CEO of J Records, and Chairman and CEO of BMG North America. Davis is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer.

He now oversees J Records, Arista, RCA, and Jive Records and the careers of such artists as Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Clay Aiken, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, and Daughtry. Arista Records will be releasing an album by Whitney Houston, whom Davis has called the greatest singer in the world, in 2008.

Clive Davis is featured in the February 21, 2008 (1046) issue of Rolling Stone. The article titled "The Last Record Man" discusses how Davis has helped guide the careers of hit artists and how even four decades later he still looks for the next hit. With her great vocals, I won't be surprised if one of new 2008 hit singers will be Charice Pempengco.

Here's a clip from ASAP 08 with Charice Pempenco and Lani Misalucha before Charice flew to New York.

If Charisse Pempengco is not getting as much media exposure as she deserves, that’s because her singing career will be foreign-based. The 14-year-old has turned into some sort of sensation in foreign countries where she impressed music lovers with her amazing voice. Her popularity abroad was verified when she guested in the Ellen DeGeneres Show, wowing the audience and getting a standing ovation. Local launch of debut CD, produced by Star Records, has been postponed. Since Malou Santos signed up with a foreign-based distribution company, her debut CD consisting of original numbers and cover versions, will be launched abroad before it is released here.

If Charise Pempengco is not getting a much media exposure as she deserves, that’s because her singing career will be foreign-based. The 14-year-old Charise has turned into some sort of sensation in foreign countries where she impressed music lovers with her amazing high voice. Her popularity abroad was verified when she quested in the “Ellen DeGeneres Show,” wowing the audience and getting a standing ovation. Her debut CD as produced by Star Records which is supposed to be launch here this month has been postponed. Since Malou Santos signed up with a foreign-based distribution company, her debut CD consisting of original numbers and cover versions will be launched abroad before it is released here. This is an innovative approach, for sure, a forward-looking strategy.
