The CompanY’s big band Christmas concert

FRESH from its much-raved about concert at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, The CompanY prepares for a Christmas edition of its big band concert on December 15 at the Music Museum.

"We've been receiving a lot of requests for a repeat from people who missed the show. It's quite flattering really. However, we didn't just want to repeat the whole thing over. Considering the date of the concert, we think that adding Christmas music culled from our holiday album will be a great idea," explains Moy Ortiz, spokesman for the group.

This concert is a realization of a seven-year pipe dream for The CompanY and the show's musical director and executive producer-Beth Martin. The show will feature a 10-piece big band ensemble with a repertoire that is almost entirely all new, so longtime CompanY music fans have a lot of new surprises in store.

This new show runs the gamut of musical genres that combine vocal harmony with a sonic wall of brasses. "A Very Horny Christmas" will showcase the musical genres of jazz, standards, swing music, classical music, a cappella, Original Pilipino Music and Broadway music. Moreover, this show also tackles more contemporary musical genres of rock, house music, rhythm and blues, Motown, jazz fusion, Latin, novelty, Christmas/ holiday music and mainstream pop.

Highlights of the repertoire include a comedic vocalese rendition of the most famous marches by John Philip Soussa, a bebop and scatting version of the novelty hit "Boom Tarat Tarat," a vocal version of the Average White Band's instrumental funk hit "Pick Up The Pieces," boogie arrangements of the APO's classic hit "Lumang Tugtugin" and the traditional Filipino Christmas carol "Noche Buena."

The show is written and directed by Moy Ortiz with special guest performances from Eugene Villaluz, saxophonist Michael Guevarra and Cercados (a teenage quartet sister act in the vein of Destiny's Child). Ding Cruz takes charge of the choreography while Danilo Franco, Arnel Papa and Sherwin Cervantes make sure that Annie Quintos, Moy Ortiz, Cecile Bautista, Sweet Plantado and Jay Marquez will all look fabulous on concert night.

For inquiries and reservations, call Music Museum at 721-0635, TicketWorld at 891-9999 or Beth Martin at (0917) 857-8500.

Cancer survivor gathers top singers for CD compilation

    Yugel Losorata

The Big C is one of the most known life-threatening ailments, while music is a universal medium of healing.

These two popularly accepted truths come into fusion in a new compilation CD featuring topnotch singers and songs essentially celebrating life and the will of the spirit to hold on.

Cancer survivor Pinky Tobiano is in position to produce a star-studded album that includes recordings from highly achieving artists Jose Mari Chan, The Company, Jamie Rivera, and Gary Valenciano. Her initiative is her take on the continuing crusade to help cancer patients survive by lifting their spirits through various means like music.

Called H.O.P.E ("Healing of Pain and Enlightenment"), the CD features recording artists who for Pinky are the epitomes of hope. Some of the familiar songs rendered in movingly effective manner are "You Light Up My Life," "Will of the Wind," "Umagang Kay Ganda," and "Lift Up Your Hands."

"This album is a heartwarming tribute to the joy that is life. It is a boon that we could time its release during this holiday season," expressed Pinky in a statement given during the album’s recent launch.

The crusader behind "The Pinky Cares Foundation" (created for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy), Pinky was diagnosed with throat cancer herself in 2003 and successfully underwent operation that removed it. The operation was done by foreigner Dr. Jatin Shah, an internationally renowned specialist who flew from New York to Manila to cure Pinky. A touching true story revealed that Pinky met Dr.Shah on a cruise many years back, with the former sending the latter Christmas card each year since they met. Dr. Shah didn’t response even once. But nine years later he found out that the card’s sender has a throat cancer. He didn’t charge Pinky for a bill, saying that the Christmas cards she sent without fail each year were more than enough.

    A heart-felt rendition of a classic

The Beatles original "In My Life", sung in this album by Divine Diva Jamie Rivera, is counted as the album’s carrier single. Star Records (which line produced and is distributing the album) has found the particular cut as the one that powerfully represents the tone of the album. Nixon Sy, an executive from the recording company, personally dubbed Jamie’s version (which is more of Bette Middler’s take than that of The Beatles) as "may kakaibang ramdam sa puso."

Most of the artists featured in the compilation were given twice chances to showcase their ‘healing voices.’ Prolific songwriter Jose Mari Chan participated with "Empty Space" and his original "No Rewind, No Replay", off the highly successful album "Constant Change." Mr. Pure Energy lent his voice for "Lift Up Your Hands" and "Here Am I", while The Company, regarded as the premier vocal group in the local music scene, blended for "Something Good" and "Time And Love".

Jamie’s other track is the 90s hit"Will of the Wind" while Toni Gonzaga, one of the more popular TV personalities today and a steadily rising recording star, showed her way into the album with the Babyface-Whitney Houston collaboration "Count on Me."

Other performers in the CD are Charice Pempengco, Jon Joven, Fatima Soriano, Pianne Tobiano Sinfuego, and Carissa Cruz and Jasper Manalo who sang in duet the OPM gem "Umagang Kay Ganda". These are talented voices and musicians close to Pinky’s heart and who sincerely care for the plight of cancer-stricken people.

Apart from being a homage to the power of music as a form of healing, H.O.P.E serves as a big way to reach out to Bosom Buddies (a support group for *** cancer survivors) and I Can Serve (an advocacy group empowering women afflicted with *** cancer) which are valued as beneficiaries o fH.O.P.E album sales.

    Re: The Company

    H.O.P.E. springs eternal
    By Phillip Cu-Unjieng
    Sunday, December 16, 2007

It’s not often that the back story of a music CD carries as much weight as the music itself, as is the case with the H.O.P.E. (Healing of Pain and Enlightenment) album. A compilation of songs performed by an impressive array of artists like Gary Valenciano, Jose Mari Chan, Jamie Rivera, The CompanY, Toni Gonzaga, Fatima Soriano and Charice Pempengco, to name a few, the CD is the brainchild of the tireless consumer crusader/chemist/businesswoman Pinky Tobiano. A victim of thyroid cancer, Pinky recalled how when she’d be undergoing radiation or chemotherapy, she’d be stuck in a room, waiting for her treatment, and it would be one of the loneliest of experiences. “You’d just be sitting there in complete silence and a thousand and one things are running through your mind, all depressing and making you feel so hopeless. It was during those waiting periods that I wished there was some piped-in music that would somehow soothe, comfort, or at the very least, distract me, and help me push away the morbid thoughts.”

It was with this in mind, and the fact that Pinky’s own mother also recently had to face her own cancer challenge, that Pinky sat down with Anabelle Regalado-Borja of Star Records and conceptualized this CD of music that aims to uplift and “ease the burden.” While cancer awareness and outreach groups like I Can Serve and Bosom Buddies are direct beneficiaries of the CD sales, Pinky and Anabelle agreed that the music also had to stand on its own, a compilation of both upbeat tunes and poignant ballads, while carrying potent messages in the lyrics. Also, they had to be songs whose sentiments would apply across a broad cross-section of troubled people; that it wouldn’t just be music with cancer victims in mind, but music that could help “heal” those suffering from heartbreak, plain loneliness, or whatever.

The CD opens with a short narrative spoken by Pinky, and a solo piano piece by Pinky’s daughter, Pianne. While some of the cuts were generously “donated” by the respective artists from their library of previously recorded material, I especially liked the specially-recorded versions of Kenny Loggins’ Will of the Wind and the Beatles’ In My Life by Jamie Rivera. In My Life was used by my own family a decade ago when both my mother-in-law and mother passed away from cancer within a period of six months. When I introduced Pinky to Annabelle, the one song I mentioned that I’d like to see in the CD was Charlie Chaplin’s Smile. Given a subtle bossa beat, I see it on the CD, interpreted by 15-year-old Charice Pempengco. Yes, this is the same Charice whose YouTube performance caught the attention of Ellen deGeneres, and was invited to perform on Ellen’s show in the US. Listen to this cut and be very surprised to find out it’s a 15-year-old displaying such confident delivery and phrasing.

One other cut that deserves special mention is Umagang Kay Ganda, as sung by the duet of Jasper Manalo and Carissa Cruz. Carissa is the daughter of Gina de Venecia, and currently an undersecretary in the Department of Trade and Industry, while Jasper is a young La Salle student. It’s touches like this that give the CD a very special facet, one that shows how so many people were struck by the CD’s concept and readily enlisted when Pinky called. Even well known business personages, like real-estate developer Joey Antonio, showed support of a different type by being one of the CD’s sponsors.

As I mentioned earlier, Bosom Buddies and I Can Serve are the direct beneficiaries of the sales of the CD. You get an impressive compilation of soothing music and help these cancer awareness groups in the process. We can only thank Pinky for giving us this unique opportunity for spreading Christmas cheer. Besides adding to one’s personal collection, one can also gift friends with a copy.

    The CompanY: "We are family"

    By REYMA BUAN-DEVEZA

To many, they are a singing group. Others might see them as a group of friends. But as far as the country's premiere vocal ensemble The CompanY is concerned, they are family.

Close to approaching their 25th anniversary as a group, The CompanY is still very solid, and busy with their distinct performances here and abroad.

"We'd been together for almost 23 years now and we are still here -- together," Moy Ortiz, the leader of The CompanY told abs-cbnNews.com.

The group shared that some of their ways to bond and to keep their relationship strong are eating and watching movies and musical plays together.

"We go out to eat but it doesn't necessarily mean that it should be fancy - but it should be clean," Ortiz added.

According to the new tenor of the group, Jay Marquez, they also consider their rehearsals as a time to forge stronger ties.

The Company"When we are doing our rehearsals for our shows, usually we go to the place of one of our members, like in (Annie Quinto's) house she's always the ‘taya', we eat food and just drink coffee."

Annie Quintos, a soprano alto, is one of the group's founding members.

Sweet Plantado, also a member of the group, said that another way to keep their band together is to constantly communicate.

"Of course open communication just like any other relationship you need that," Plantado said.

The group is one in saying that the reason they are still united is because of love of their craft, and continually discovering things they can still offer as a group and as individuals.

The group was formed in the late 80s by Ortiz and his 11 friends. After 23 years and seventeen studio albums that have reaped 38 music industry awards, The CompanY has become the country's premiere vocal group.

They will now share the training, knowledge, experiences, and insights they have acquired in their long career by conducting a summer workshop.

The CompanY joins forces with music school Trumpets' Musicademy to offer a summer class called "Star Powers."

The group said the program is designed to provide intensive training for vocal performers in one's chosen style of contemporary music.

The workshop will run from April 2 to May 31, and will be held at the Trumpets Musicademy studio at the 5th floor of Shangri-la Mall.

The CompanY will also have a reunion show entitled "Music Museum Back to the Academy: a Dream Reunion" with the top 6 winners of ABS-CBN's Pinoy Dream Academy Season 1 on April 12th, at Museum Museum in Greenhills, San Juan.

Catch their latest album "Destination: Bossa" under Viva Records.

    THE COMPANY

For one of the country’s premiere ensembles, "The Company", exalting Holy Week comes in various ways.

The group leader and founder, Moy Ortiz, told abs-cbnNews.com that aside from praying, he may also be doing Visita Iglesia (Visit of Churches), a tradition Catholics observe during Lent.

Other members like Annie Quintos and Cecile Bautista will also do Visita Iglesia. They will also again watch the classic film for the Holy Week, "The 10 Commandments".

Another "The Company" member, Jay Marquez, will join a clan reunion in the province of Anilao, while Sweet Plantado will perform Cantata.

"Basically Holy Week is the time when you reflect on the sacrifices of God," Plantado replied when asked what Lent meant for her.

    A company of friends

One of Philippine’s most successful vocal group talks about the ties that have bound them together for more than 23 years

“HARD WORK, vision, and passion.” That is the formula that, for 23 years, has made Moy Ortiz, Annie Quintos, Cecile Bautista, Sweet Plantado and Jay Marquez one of the country’s most successful vocal groups.

Known as The CompanY, the group is second only to The APO in terms of career longevity. The APO has been together for over 30 years; The CompanY-after surviving several membership changes-will be celebrating their 25th year together two years from now. All of them agree that they would not have gotten to where they are had it not been for Moy, who is one of the two original founding members of the group and who is the force that holds them all together.

It was Moy’s vision that founded The CompanY in 1985. It was also thanks to Moy that the group did not collapse after founding members Andre Castillo and Reuben Laurente left. Although each member has a specific role to play-Annie handles the group’s bookings and does the accounting; Sweet helps with staging the shows and the choreography-it is Moy who has the biggest role to play. He is the visionary behind all of them. “Moy has enough passion for all of us; he has more than all of us combined. Whenever there’s a problem, we all look to Moy; he’s our strong post,” says Cecile.

A key part of their success is the attitude adjustment that they realised was required if they were to survive the business. “We have a better grasp and understanding of reality now compared to when we were just starting,” says Annie.

It is also important that one learns to survive the disappointments and setbacks, like what happened when Andre and Reuben left the group. According to Moy, it never even occurred to him to disband the group after that happened. “I had a vision for the group, and it was that vision that kept us on track,” he says.

Jay, the youngest and newest member of the group, says he didn’t have a hard time fitting in because everyone else made him feel welcome. The members of The CompanY aren’t just workmates; they’re friends-and everyone who comes along, at one point or another, learns exactly what that means. “It wasn’t that hard (fitting in),” says Jay. “They made me feel like we were old friends, and even Andre was very kind and helpful, teaching me the songs. Moy also helped a lot. I’m having a very good time so far. I didn’t feel alienated at all.”

The group is now working on a new album. Their follow-up to their bossa-flavoured Destination: Bossa is titled Group Hug, and will feature The CompanY performing the music of iconic groups like ABBA, The Carpenters, The Beatles, Queen and Manhattan Transfer, among others.

    Re: The Company

    Be a star this summer

Twenty- three years in the music business has taught Moy Ortiz, Annie Quintos, Sweet Plantado, Cecile Bautista and Jay Marquez–collectively known as The CompanY–a lot of things, which they are eager to pass on to the next generation of performers this summer through Trumpets Musicademy’s "Star Power" workshop.

"Star Power" workshop is not a basic voice workshop. Rather, it will teach students how to enhance the other aspects of live performance, from writing and delivering spiels to imaging. It will also touch on managing finances, bookings, dealing with the media, repertoire-building, microphone techniques, staging and choreography, and even recording a demo.

In short, if you intend to make singing a career–and want to become successful at it–these are things you need to learn to acquire true "star power."

Classes will be held at The Podium and will run from April 2 to May 31 and will be open to teens and adults who should already have had the benefit of basic vocal training in pop singing, whether it’s R n B, standards, or straight up pop-jazz.

Explains Moy, "What we’re going to be doing here is more along the lines of a master class. It’s more of mentoring, of shaping the song and giving advice. It’s very hands-on. We want to make them (the students) aware of what they’re up against, and what it takes to succeed at a singing career."

All the members of The CompanY agree that they have indeed learned a lot in the more than two decades that they’ve been in the business. "It takes a lot of hard work and vision," says Annie.

"Also passion," says Cecile. "Along the way, there have been lots of challenges. Fortunately, for us, Moy has that vision, and he has enough passion for all of us."

Adds Moy, "Basically, it’s a combination of persistence and vision. Plus you’ve got to work hard and be willing to go the extra mile. Siyempre, nandiyan na rin yung talent. You have to have talent to give–and to that, you add the hard work and vision."

That, in a nutshell, is what they will be passing on to their students in the "Star Power" workshop. They are eager to start the workshops, having had a taste of it when they became "teachers" during the first season of "Pinoy Dream Academy (PDA)," whose second season is about to be launched by ABS-CBN.

There is so much to learn, says Moy, that there are even plans for the workshop to have a part two once the first part gets off the ground.

So if you want to learn how to be a star this summer, sign up for The CompanY and Trumpets Musi-cademy’s "Star Power" workshop.

    MST HOME

    A dream reunion concert

School is over for almost everyone except perhaps for the graduates of the first Pinoy Dream Academy. Yeng Constantino, Jay-R Siaboc, Ronnie Liang, Irish Fullerton, Panky Trinidad and Chad Peralta join their mentors from the multi-awarded vocals group The CompanY for a special summer reunion concert billed Back To The Academy: A Dream Reunion! on April 12, Saturday, at the Music Museum.

For those who may not be aware, some members of The CompanY were taken in as music teachers in the first season of the reality program Pinoy Dream Academy. The top graduates have since steadily built a name for themselves and have gained a loyal fan base in the local music industry.

The concert is meant to celebrate the gains and successes each one has been blessed with since getting out of the academy, getting their big exposure on the weekend variety show ASAP. Yeng, Jay-R, Ronnie and Chad have already released their debut albums. Irish, Jay-R and Yeng also had their taste of acting when they landed prized roles in daily drama programs. The scholars have also gone on numerous international and national concert tours. Some scholars have also been chosen as endorsers of the most recognized brands.

The CompanY, now a quintet composed of Annie Quintos, Moy Ortiz, Cecile Bautista, Sweet Plantado and Jay Marquez, continues to be a potent force in both the recording and live entertainment industries.

Back To The Academy: A Dream Reunion will feature the best of each of the performers and will set the standard in concept-driven concerts. The repertoire shall cover a wide spectrum of music genres from pop to rock, from acoustic folk to electronic, from a cappella to dance, from the traditional to the unconventional. Musical director for the show is the irrepressible Beth Martin under the direction of Moy Ortiz.

For tickets, call The Music Museum at 721-0635 or 721-6726, Ticketworld at 891-9999 or log on to www.ticket-world.com.ph.  For more information, visit The CompanY’s official Web site at www.thecompany-singers.com
