Kuh and Pops back on stage-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- KUH Ledesma has done very well in pairing up with the so-called “divas” of local music. Her team-up with Zsa Zsa Padilla in “Diva 2 Diva” is now one of the longest-running concert series to date, wowing audiences all over the world more than two years after it opened a the PICC. Last Valentine’s Day, it was Concert Queen Pops Fernandez’s turn to share the limelight with Kuh in "Let’s Talk About Love" at the Captain’s Bar of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. From their opening song to the last, Kuh and Pops consistently showed why they are among the best female performers in the business. The two divas treated audiences to some of the best and most romantic songs like their renditions of "Love Moves," a beautifully-arranged duet of "Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo" and "Paano," a Barry Manilow medley ("Ready to Take a Chance Again" and "If I Should Love Again") and a Burt Bacharach medley ("Make It Easy on Yourself," "Wives and Lovers" and "Promises, Promises"). The audience particularly loved Pops’ performance of hits by the ‘80s group Swing Out Sister, including "Breakout" and "Waiting Game" and her "CCC Medley" featuring hits of three composers whose last names begin with the letter "C" George Canseco ("Ikaw"), Ryan Cayabyab ("Kailangan Kita") and Willy Cruz ("Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas"). Kuh, meanwhile, drew a standing ovation when she brought audiences back to the ‘80s with the early romantic hits of her career in "I Think I’m in Love" and "One More Try." Another revelation during the show was the presence of Kuh and Pop’s special guest, McDonald’s Philippines president George Yang. Yes, believe it or not, this high-powered businessman proved he could hold his own against the Pop Diva and the Concert Queen as he joined them onstage in several special numbers. With Pops, George performed a stirring duet of that old favorite, "Someone to Watch Over Me" plus two solo numbers ("Granada" and "Cinema Paradiso") before joining Kuh in "The Prayer," a song originally popularized by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. The concert was so enjoyable that after the last song, the audience was left begging for more – and not just an encore, but more shows. It seems that Kuh and Pops thoroughly enjoyed themselves as well, since they have decided to give in to requests to re-stage "Let’s Talk About Love" tonight and on March 4 and 10 at the Captain’s Bar of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. For inquiries, call the Mandarin Oriental Hotel (750-8888), Music Museum, (721-6726), Ticketworld (891-9999) or Headline Concepts (551-7253 to 55). http://www.malaya.com.ph/feb25/ente2.htm

Before long, they were seeing each other, at ang pagkikita nila'y naging frequent na. They now say that the sparkle in Pops' and Jom's eyes these days is caused by their being more than just friends. Wala namang nakikitang masama ang kani-kanilang mga kaibigan, especially since their respective marriages (to Martin Nievera and Aiko Melendez) have long been annulled. The two undoubtedly look good together. http://www.journal.com.ph/news.asp?pid=1&s...ay=14&year=2006

Pops Fernandez Breaking new groundThere’s never a lull in Pops Fernandez’s life. With her traveling bag as her most constant companion, she spent a great part of last year shuttling from city to city—from the sold-out US concert series with Regine Velasquez to the equally-packed stints in Switzerland, Munich, Germany, Austria, Vienna, Sweden, Copenhagen, Denmark, and Milan, Italy during the latter part of 2005. Despite the hectic schedule, the indefatigable concert queen has yet to grow travel-weary, as evinced by an even busier overseas concert itinerary for the months ahead. But for the coming year, the versatile singer/actress and TV host is in the process of streamlining her career and setting her sights on bigger goals. “It’s really our responsibility as artists,” she says, “but I’ve been known to reinvent myself from time to time. You have to give yourself something exciting to look forward to.” She recently joined ALV Talent Circuit—the same talent management outfit handling the careers of such noted stars as Dina Bonnevie, JayR, Geneva Cruz, Iya Villania, John and Camille Prats, Nancy Castiglione, and many others. Under the stewardship of long-time friend and respected talent manager Arnold Vegafria, Pops hopes to break new ground in her singing and hosting career, which have remained her forte despite her dabbling in occasional acting stints. “I did a soap about two years ago—Twin Hearts for GMA-7,” she recalls. “It was quite challenging. I played Tanya Garcia’s mom, who was probably one of the most hapless characters I’ve seen. I was kidnapped, beaten up, salvaged…God, I had fun doing that!” But as most TV viewers can attest to, it’s her spontaneous bursts of wit and humor that continue to reaffirm her stature as one of the country’s eminent TV hosts. From her early guesting spots in Ariel Ureta’s Patok na Patok to her eventual ‘discovery’ in Penthouse Live (which she co-hosted for five years or so), up to her eight-year stint in ABS-CBN’s Sunday noontime show, ASAP. Given a chance, Pops would love to host a lifestyle-oriented TV show, or a musical. Her loyal fans are in for a nifty treat soon—a much-awaited album of original Tagalog songs. “OPM’s the way to go,” she stresses. “We want to help our talented songwriters and musicians, who we have so many of. It’s the best way to keep the industry afloat.” Amid the upsurge of newer talents, Pops has held on to her turf and remains the industry’s indis######ble concert queen—a title that she doesn’t really care much about. “It’s still very flattering, but then it’s only a title. I certainly don’t live for it. For me, I do what I do because I love to do it. So, it doesn’t really matter what they label me.” Off-cam, Pops is pretty much the doting and equally protective mom who prefers to spend her non-working hours bonding with the kids. “We’re so simple,” Pops shares. “We just stay home, watch TV or eat out together. That’s our biggest thrill: watching CSI on TV.” Now in their teens, Ram (19) and Robin (15) aren’t likely to follow in their parents’ footsteps. “Robin’s into music,” she boasts. “He plays the guitar and is the musical director for our church. Whatever it is that makes them happy, I’ll accept. My mom never really wanted me to join the business, but this is what I want to do. I think it’s a blessing to have a job you’re happy with, and doesn’t really feel like a job. Not too many people are actually blessed to have that kind of work.” A survivor in more ways than one, Pops never fails to count her blessings. “Life is great,” she affirms. “I think I’ve said this so many times before. There are so many unexpected situations that come in our lives. Sometimes we plan and expect things to go a certain way, but most times, they don’t quite turn out the way we want them to. I used to get so disappointed and depressed. I used to ask so many questions. But in hindsight, that’s what keeps life exciting—those unexpected situations. I think it’s how we deal with them and how we make the most of it that makes us better people.” http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=g...fe03_mar18_2006

Pops may misteryosong prinsipe! Just when you thought you've heard the latest, now comes another juicy bit from the gossip mill. Don't look now, but the bedimpled concert queen's bewitching allure seems to be just as appealing to older men as well. Guess who was recently badly smitten by her charms? Apparently, there's this influential and mysterious Malaysian prince who caught Pops and Kuh's Let's Talk About Love concert series at the Mandarin Oriental a few weeks back. After the concert, Pops was introduced to the affluent and powerful scion who couldn't stop raving about her. Is it the high price of celebrity success? Or is it the bane of the ravishing, single and successful career woman? No matter how hard she tries, Pops just can't seem to squelch all those nasty rumors that have been hounding her the past few weeks. "Does it have to be explained?" she pleads. "I don't go out of my way ... I don't even go out. I don't have to go out of my way to attract anybody's attention, whether it's men, women or just about anyone who wants to be my friend. I just have lots of friends. Period. "The problem is, just because you're nice and quiet and don't say anything, the more they go for it; the more people attack you and start concocting stories," she laments. "It's not fair that they do it at my own — and my family's expense. Can you imagine if my kids read those baseless, fabricated stories?" So, what is it that makes her the favorite of the young and the restless? "I don't mean to blow my own horn," Pops explains, "but 'm probably smarter than the regular, average girl that they usually come across. I'm stable, I'm mature, I know what I want, and I'm successful in my chosen field. But even having said that, those aren't even requisites for a potential relationship, right?" Rather than blow her top or waste her time parrying those nasty attacks, Pops would rather keep herself busy with work. Just recently, she met with Regal Films matriarch Mother Lily Monteverde to brainstorm for two forthcoming movie projects. Despite her long hiatus from the silver screen, Pops is visibly excited about the prospects. "If the project is great, of course, I'll be very excited," she says. "It's been awhile after all, and the movies are a totally different ballgame for me. It's a very challenging genre." Towards the latter part of March, Pops will be leaving for her US-Canada tour with Regine Velasquez. "We'll be in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Connecticut and then Seattle," she shares. "Then, by May, Martin and I will be doing a European tour." She's also working double-time on her new album. "We're trying to finish it before I leave," Pops adds. "It's mostly originals, with compositions by Vehnee Saturno, Odette Quesada, Margot and Edith Gallardo, Ogie Alcasid and Cecille Azarcon." "I don’t mean to blow my horn but I’m probably smarter than regular average girl that they usually come across. I’m stable. I’m mature, I know what I want, and I’m successful in my chosen field. But even having said that, those aren’t even requisites for a potential relationship, right?" diretsong katuwiran ni Pops.

May shows sila sa Seattle, Connec-ticut, Toronto, Vancouver at Edmonton.
