Nina sings hits of Diane Warren

Four years ago when Soul Siren Nina recorded the song "I Don’t Want To Be Your Friend" for a compilation called "Diane Warren Presents: Love Songs," she didn’t realize at that time she’d be later doing a full-length album of cover songs from the rich catalogue of the so-called "Queen of the Ballad."

Fast forward and Nina is bringing to her fans her renditions of very familiar love songs written by the world-class songwriter ‘who has never been in love and does not enjoy dating.’

Last Tuesday, the sultry singer launched the tribute-album "Nina Sings The Hits of Diane Warren," treating the press with a minus one performance of songs off the album track list.

"Forte ko rin ang love songs kahit papaano kaya nakaka-relate ako sa mga kanta ni Diane Warren," she replied when asked on how important is the album’s theme to her artistry.

She elaborated, "Medyo naging okay ang pag-record ko kasi what we did was actually rearrange the songs to fit my type of singing, like kunwari rock song, ginawa naming ballad."

A couple of songs from the selections were originally done by rock bands, including the carrier single "I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing" which Steven Tyler and the rest of Aerosmith popularized as themse song for the movie "Armageddon. "

This latest album from Nina is strictly a compilation of famous numbers that ring a bell by their titles alone. It includes "I Turn To You" (Christina Aguilera), "There You’ll Be" (Faith Hill), "Love Will Lead You Back (Taylor Dane), How Do I Live (LeAnn Rimes), "When I See You Smile" (Bad English), "Un-Break My Heart (Toni Braxton) and "Because You Loved Me (Celine Dion).

As expected, the choice cuts were re-delivered within Nina’s vocal range and style, thus, creating a coherent laid-back pop engagement blessed with good melodies only a gifted songwriter like Warren could provide.

When asked if doing covers is more fulfilling for her, considering that she was able to score a hit in "Someday" (penned by ex-flame Nyoy Volante), she reasoned, "Pareho lang po kasi it’s fulfilling to sing any song, whether a cover song or an original. The fact that I am singing is fulfilling."

Via phonepatch Nina was able to talk to the 51-year old recipient of her tribute set who, as a way of acknowledging the effort, posted a message on the sleeve. It says: "A few years ago Nina cut ‘I Don’t Want To Be Your Friend’, one of my favorite songs. I am very happy that she is now coming out with an entire album filled with the songs that I’m proud of. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a lot of hits together."

The celebrated song is the last cut in the 15-song offering, preceeded by ""I Could Not Ask For More" which Nina singled out as her most favorite among Warren’s creations.

Another Warren revival, "I Love You Goodbye" was released as a single from the "Nina Live!" album.

Completing the track roster are "Ill Never Get Over You (Getting Over Me)," Blue Eyes Blue," How Can We Be Lovers," and "Saving Forever For You."

Some other Warren hits that are not part of the album are "Lonely Is The Night" (Air Supply), "Blame It On The Rain" (Milli Vanilli), "I Don’t Wanna Live Without Your Love (Chicago), movie soundtracks "If You Asked Me To" and "Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now" and that piece famously revived by local duo MYMP called "Tell Me Where It Hurts."

Nina sings the hits of Diane Warren

Soulful singer Nina is now busy promoting her fifth studio album titled "Nina sings the hits of  Diane Warren.”

In an interview, Nina (also known as the "Soul Siren) shared her excitement and happiness over her latest CD which is produced by Warner Music Philippines.

“It’s a vey special album because a lot of my friends and supporters are asking for a whole album consisting the songs of Diane Warren… halos lahat ng mga songs ay alam ko dito basta magaganda ang mga songs na ni-record ko dito,” Nina said.

Diane Warren is one of the most successful and prolific songwriters in US.   Some of her hit songs were “Un-break My Heart,” “There You’ll Be,” “When I See You Smile,” and “If I Could Turn Back Time.”

When asked on why she chose to record Warren’s hits, Nina replied: “Actually halos lahat ng love songs na alam natin siya ang gumawa, at nakakaka-relate kasi ako basta love songs.”

The new CD which is composed of 15 songs includes – “I Dont Wanna Miss A Thing,” “Because You Loved Me,” “Blue Eyes Blue,” “Love Will Lead You Back,” “I'll Never Get Over You Getting Over Me,” “I Don’t Wanna Be Your Friend Anymore, and I Love You Goodbye”

Aside from hearing only the best from her album, Nina said that you could also practice your singing skills since there’s a free minus one CD when you purchase a package of her album.

    Nina -- single but happy

Nina who ended her romantic affair with acoustic singer Nyoy Bolante for almost a year now said that she’s still single but happy.

The singer said that right now she’s concentrating doing her shows and promoting her album.

Nina also dismissed the possibility of falling in love again with Bolante but said that she will be civil if ever she will meet again the latter.

“(Iyong balikan?) Hindi na siguro kumbaga hindi na naman ganoon kaganda yung break -p siguro magiging civil when we will get to see each other pero ngayon hindi pa kami nagkikita,”  Nina said.

Aside from her CD she will be doing a concert this coming August 2 at Music Museum titled "Nina's Men".

For the said concert Nina will be singing songs of her favorite male artist like Frank Sinatra.

She will also have singer Richard Poon and the dance group Streetboys as guests for the concert.

Nina or Marifil Niña Girado in real life is also set to do a concert  this coming September titled “Nina sings the hits of Diane Warren, Live!”

Right now, Nina is coordinating with Warren so the latter could write an original composition for her.

Will producers ever trust Nina again?

According to singer/talent exporter/producer Chad Malinao, singer Nina did not only fail to attend rehearsals but failed to promote the concert entitled Nina’s Men at the Music Museum last Aug. 2, greatly affecting ticket sales. Starring Jay Durias, Richard Poon, King and the Street Boys, the one–night concert as directed by Bert de Leon failed to attract ticket buyers so the organizers had to bring in people to fill up the audience area. The producer allegedly invested P1.6 million but none of the investments returned. Could such unprofessional attitude be the cause of the downturn of concerts by local artists? Because they largely turn out losers nobody is encouraged to produce anymore. There’s also no organization where complaints can be filed.

    Re: Nina (OT)

    Nina moves on

It wasn’t easy, says Nina, but it was something that at that point she felt was “the right thing to do.”

The singer is talking about her breakup with singer/guitarist Nyoy Volante a year ago.

According to Nina, the partnership was “good as it lasted” but unfortunately “it had to end in a sad note.”

The singer doesn’t want to go into details of what brought about the breakup, but she is adamant that the much-ballyhooed sexuality of the acoustic singer had nothing to do with it.

“No! Hindi ah!,” she protests, “Hindi siya ano… kung ano man ‘yon, ha-ha-ha… I should know.”

Nina admits that it was partly about money

“It just came to a point where we can’t talk about ‘us’ anymore,” she say with finality.

She says she has moved on, proudly announcing in fact that she has found a new love.

“Let’s just say that I am very happy right now; but… because he’s not from showbiz… let’s not talk about him na lang.”

What excites Nina these days is the new album she is promoting: Nina Sings the Hits of Diane Warren.

The album, Nina says, is an inspiring collection that made “coping easy” with regards to issues related to her “unsuccessful relationship” with Volante, and allowed her to “dream new dreams”, citing Warren’s lyrics among “the best and most heartfelt” that she had sung.

“I’m a big fan of her music. Diane is a prolific songwriter whose grasp of the craft is just… ano, amazing… ang galing talaga… nakakabilib… I’m really thankful to have been able to do a whole album consisting nothing but her masterworks,” Nina admits.

Complete track listing of the album include “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” (Aerosmith), “Because You Loved Me” (Celine Dion), Saving Forever For You (Shanice), “Have You Ever” (Brandy, Westlife), “Un-Break My Heart” (Toni Braxton), “I Turn To You” (Christina Aguilera), “How Do I Live” (Trisha Yearwood), “I’ll Never Get Over You (Getting Over Me)” (Expose), “There You’ll Be” (Faith Hill), “Blue Eyes Blue” (Eric Clapton), “I Could Not Ask For More” (Edwin McCain), “When I See You Smile” (Bad English), “If I Could Turn Back Time” (Cher), “Love Will Lead You Back” (Taylor Dane), “How Can We Be Lovers” (Michael Bolton), “I Don’t Want To Be Your Friend” (Cyndi Lauper), and “I Love You Goodbye” (Celine Dion).

Nina says the last two songs are “the seeds” from whence the idea for the album came up.

“I did a cover of “I Don’t Want To Be Your Friend” in 2004 for [the compilation album] Diane Warren Presents: Love Songs. When that album came out… people liked it so much that… bigla na lang may mga requests for an album of Diane Warren hits… parang… they wanted me to make one agad,” Nina states.

The song stayed at the top of the local charts for two months. When Nina did another Warren composition (“I Love You Goodbye”) in Nina Live, it became another big hit—it was then that she gave in to the clamor.

“Having two hits twice in a row made me think… maybe the fans really would love for me to do Diane Warren material, so… here it is, from me to them, with love,” Nina says.

Another factor that was crucial in Nina’s decision to wax the album was Warren herself, who, upon hearing her interpretation of “I Don’t Want To Be Your Friend,” was reportedly so impressed that she actually encouraged Nina to record more (of her songs).

In a special dedication she wrote for Nina (as printed on the liner notes on the CD sleeve), Diane wrote: “A few years ago Nina cut ‘I Don’t Want To Be Your Friend,’ one of my favorite songs. I am very happy that she is now coming out with an entire album filled with the songs that I’m proud of. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of a lot of hits together.”

Nina admits that deciding on the final track listing of the album was hard, considering the number of Warren’s hits.

“It took some time. Ang dami kasing magaganda... pero, what we did [sic] is select the songs, based on which [ones] I could relate to, so that when I interpret them parang ramdam talaga—’yong sincere talaga,” Nina enthuses.

Critics say that going back to doing covers is a step back for the artist. Her last hit, “Someday,” was an original, penned by ex-flame Volante. Yet, Nina doesn’t have qualms being branded a “revivalist.”

“I see nothing wrong with that… I enjoy singing songs bago o luma man…[sic] as long as I did them well and these are Diane Warren’s songs; not only are they very popular, they are destined to be future ‘classics’,” Nina emphasizes.

Though Nina and album producer Neil Gregorio re-arranged all the songs in the album to give it, “local flavor,” they weren’t that drastic as to veer away from Warren’s original vision for each number.

“We did our interpretation with utmost respect to Diane’s artistry,” Nina says.

As an added bonus, Warren is also throwing in a minus-one of all the songs.

“This is so that all the fans could also do their own interpretation of the songs,” Nina says.

The album’s promotional track, “I Could Not Ask For More,” is Nina’s favorite. The singer says it reflects where she is now—professionally and romantically.

“I am at peace… happy… of course, a big part of all of this, is… the person I’m in love with now. He makes me feel so content, so blessed, that… well, I really could not ask for more.”
