Stars sing for the first Notre Dame school in Asia

    02/15/2007

Pinoy Dream Academy’s Yeng Constantino, Philippine Idol’s Reymond Sajor and Super Inggo’s Sam Concepcion are the topnotch singers who will take part in the Diamond Jubilee Celebration at the Notre Dame of Midsayap College (NDMC) in Cotabato, which is the very first Notre Dame school in the Philippines and Asia. This historic event is aptly titled “Sidlak” and set on Feb. 17, Sat., at NDMC soccer field.

Pinoy Dream Academy Grand Star Dreamer Yeng Constantino will lead around 7,000 participants from different Notre Dame colleges and universities from General Santos, Marbel, Kidapawan and Cotabato City in singing her phenomenal hit composition “Hawak Kamay,” while calling on all Notre Dameans to continue on serving with compassion and excellence.

Philippine Idol balladeer Reymond Sajor will render a sneak peek into his remake of Fr. JBoy Gonzales, SJ’s classic song “Panunumpa,” earlier popularized by fellow Trumpets singer/actor Carol Banawa. Reymond will also recount his winning moment as Grand Prize Winner in the first Hamilton Canada Talent Hunt. He will sing “This Is The Moment,” from Jekyll and Hyde, The Musical, his winning piece in the said international competition prior his stint in Philippine Idol.

Equally first-rate, Little Big Star grand prize winner Sam Concepcion will wow the crowd with his pop and R&B styling and moves to “Footloose,” from Footloose The Musical, “Get’cha Head in the Game” from High School Musical, and “Super Hero,” theme song of ABS CBN’s top-rating fantaserye Super Inggo.

While in Midsayap, Cotabato, all three artists will appeal for peace and order in Mindanao.

Notre Dame Academy (NDA) in Midsayap, Cotabato formally opened its doors to students in July 1941. Founded by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, NDA has been the first of all established Notre Dame schools in the archipelago and the Asian region. The outbreak of World War II prompted the temporary closure of the institution on that same year. It reopened in 1946 with Fr. Robert Sullivan, OMI, as director.

In June 1960, NDA started to offer collegiate courses to students with Fr. Charles Prass, OMI, as its first rector. The institution has since been named as Notre Dame of Midsayap College (NDMC).

On NDMC’s 65th year, the institution stands proud of its accomplishments and of what it has become—65 years of selfless and dedicated service. NDMC traces its history from its humble beginnings to being a stronghold of learning. Through time, NDMC has become a compassionate community with remarkable commitment coming from its leaders. Fr. Romeo Saniel, OMI, is NDMC’s Diamond Jubilee President.

ABS CBN, DXOL Cotabato, DXDM Kidapawan and DXOM Marbel will cover this major event in Mindanao.

    * * *

Big stage comeback ito ng teener after the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, na four years ago pa niya ginawa.

Open ito to all past and current Trumpets Playshop students, 14 to 20 years old.

“I miss the theater, that’s why I’m so excited. I know the movie made a big impact on the youth and I’m flattered to play the lead,” wika ni Sam.

Be a star with Trumpets’ summer workshops

TRUMPETS Playshop and Musicademy has extended enrollment until April 14. This summer, acting master class and personality development course are added to the list of workshops to be conducted at The Podium, Shangri-La Plaza Mall and Alabang Town Center.

Now on its 14th year as a summer training ground for exemplary talents, which include Asian pop star Christian Bautista, teen star Sam Concepcion, first "Philippine Idol" finalist Reymond Sajor and the Playshop Kids, Trumpets Playshop rallies behind the theme, "Pass It On."

Christian Bautista joined Trumpets Playshop’s advance musical theater class fresh from his undergraduate studies at the University of Philippines. He came back to the workshops a year after as assistant teacher to stage actor Meynard Penalosa. In 2004, Christian competed in ABS-CBN’s first reality-TV talent search "Star in a Million." He later joined STAGES and inked a recording deal with Warner Music Philippines. His first hit single "The Way You Look at Me" made it really big not only in the Philippines, but in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. He continues with his winning streak with hit albums, concerts around the Asian region, Middle East and the US, regular TV shows and movie projects.

Sam Concepcion enrolled with Trumpets Playshop’s advance musical theater class when he was just nine years old. He later took up street dancing classes. Soon after, he was competing in ABS-CBN’s first season of "Little Big Star," where he bagged the Brightest Star title. Also managed by STAGES, Sam has been featured in various ABS- CBN soaps like "Super Inggo," "Your Song," and "Walang Kapalit" with Piolo Pascual and Claudine Barretto. He is currently dubbing the voice of Yukio Tanakar for Japanese anime, "Beck" to be shown over Hero Channel.

Raymond Sajor took up musical theater class with Trumpets Playshop before flying to Hamilton, Canada in 2003. He competed at the 1st Hamilton Talent Hunt and won the grand prize. He then got back in Manila and played the lead role of Prince Christian in Trumpets’ production of "Little Mermaid." He auditioned for the first-ever "Philippine Idol" and secured himself a spot in the Top 12. Reymond, who very recently joined STAGES, will compete at the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Hollywood by July.

Trumpets Playshop, which has been consistently getting the biggest number of enrollees every year, offers Children’s Theater, Children’s Musical Theater, Children’s Musical Theater (Intermediate), Teens and Adults’ Musical Theater, Summer Stock, Teens and Adults’ Basic Acting; Kids, Teens and Adults’ Streetdancing; Children and Teens’ Modeling; Streetdancing (Advance); Teens and Adults’ Public Speaking and Hosting; Acting Master Class and Personality Development.

Trumpets Musicademy, Trumpets’ year-round training facility, based at the Shangri-La Plaza Mall, offers one-on-one voice, musical instruments (piano and guitar), languages (English and French) and speech classes.

Trumpets Playshop and Musicademy will run until June 2. For inquiries, call 636-2842 or 635-4478 or visit htt://musicademy-playshop.blogspot.com.

    * * *

“I enjoy doing both " stage and showbiz,” say ni Sam. “But theater is my first love,” dagdag pa niya.

Magkaibang-magkaiba raw ang theater at showbiz kaya at least, may breather siya doing both.

Another thing, once in a while lang naman ang stage plays, kaya so far, nakakaya niyang pagsabayin.

“Like 2006 ’yung last play na ginawa ko at ngayon lang ulit nasundan,” say pa niya.

Sam will be playing the role of Troy Bolton sa High School Musical kasama ang 50 sa pinakamagagaling na batang artista sa bansa.

With theater royalty Audie Gemora at the helm of this project, ang High School Musical ay magpapatunay kung gaano kagaling ang mga Pinoy sa larangan ng pagpe-perform.

Aside from Sam, kasama rin sa nasabing musical sina Cheska Ortega bilang female lead, Alex Godinez, PJ Valerio, Jeff Arcilla and Sheila Francisco.

For tickets, call Ticketworld at 891-9999 or Stages at 818-1111 loc. 209 or 225.

    IF I KNOW

    SAM BACK TO THEATER

BEFORE Sam Concepcion joined "Little Big Star" last year and became a mainstay of "Super Inggo" several months later, he was first and foremost a stage actor.

It was in theater where he honed his craft as an actor. At the age of nine, he had been performing in various stage plays.

When Sam won in the Big Division of "Little Big Star,"  which paved the way for his entry in showbiz, he still didn’t forget theater. In fact, he’s playing the lead role in the hit Disney telemusical "High School Musical."

“I enjoy doing both stage and showbiz but theater is my first love,” says Sam. While theater and showbiz are two different worlds, Sam gets the chance to do both. The last time he did a play was in 2006.

Sam will be playing the role of Troy Bolton in "High School Musical" together with 50 talented young actors in the cast, that include Cheska Ortega (who’s the female lead), Alex Godinez, PJ Valerio, Jeff Arcilla and Sheila Francisco.

A production of Stages and Trumphets Productions, HSM runs every weekend from June 23 hanggang July 15 at the Meralco Theater. For tickets, call Ticketworld at 891-9999 or Stages at 818-1111 loc. 209 or 225.

    Re: Sam Concepcion

No longer a boy, not yet a man
    By Maridol Rañoa-Bismark
    Tuesday, June 5, 2007

Waiting on the set for his other co-stars to arrive may be something Sam Concepcion has to get used to. So, too, is missing his chance to join an annual competition in Korea, which he and fellow performers from the Philippines handily won last year.

But these things Sam must learn to live with, and take with a grain of salt. After all, not everyone gets a chance to cross over from theater to TV with ease. Not everyone also gets to play the lead role of Troy Bolton in Stages’ production of Disney’s High School Musical at Meralco Theater.

The 14-year-old Little Big Star Season 1 champion may have yet to feel the highs and lows of first love the way Troy did. In fact, he has yet to go on his first date. But that’s okay, as far as director Audie Gemora is concerned. The theater thespian still found Sam a shoo-in for the role and handpicked him.

Auditions were not necessary, thank you. Sam’s track record speaks for itself. Besides, the high school sophomore is a product of Trumpets Playshop workshops, which Audie’s company, Stages has been conducting for years now.

And Audie proudly proclaims, “High School Musical is a Sam Concepcion project.”

That doesn’t mean Sam had a breeze preparing for this role of a lifetime.

“I had to put on weight because I play a basketball jock,” he admits. But instead of working out in the gym the way others would (he doesn’t have the time for it), Sam took the less streneous  way out. He indulged himself in something most teens like him love: ice cream.

Sam is having a ball working again with theater actors like him, led by his mentor of a few years, Audie. Add to that the fact that the rest of the cast is composed of young people like him (their ages range from 14 to 20), and you have one hell of a party, on stage and off.

You don’t know how exhausting it can be to deal with a group of young people whose energies are as boundless as the sea, sighs Audie. But it’s worth it.

“I have so much faith in the young, vibrant cast,” he crows. “And this production will prove that, indeed, local musical theater is in good hands with these young actors.”

Besides, he adds, it’s about time musicals come up with material meant for the young. Sadly, this is what we sorely lack. And, considering that there are just so many young theater talents waiting to be tapped, this situation is downright alarming.

Auditions alone attracted a record high of almost 300 young people. The 50 young people who made it to the casting list passed through the proverbial eye of the needle. One of them is Sergio, former president Fidel V. Ramos’ grandson. The theater newbie is the only son of Lloyd Samartino and Jo Ramos.

Still another is Alex Godinez, Martin Nievera’s niece, as the mean Sherpay Evans. Fame Flores, Homer Flores’ daughter, plays Kelsi Neilsen. Fil-German TV personality PJ Valerio, on the other hand, makes his theater debut in the musical.

Like the characters they play, these young people know how it is to belong to a clique, to feel peer pressure — to be a normal teenager, in other words. Sam himself admits, “At this stage, you don’t know what your friends may think. Peer pressure is bearing down on you.”

He felt it as a student of the Christian Academy of Manila (he’s now into distance learning). Except that unlike other teenagers, Sam knows what he wants in life and goes after it.

Give him theater anytime and he’ll drop everything.

“Theater is my first passion,” he declares. The others — modeling, hosting, even rapping — just came along the way.

Sam was the very young actor who shared the stage a number of times with Celeste Legaspi years back. Two years ago, he starred in the musical The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. TV appearances took him away from theater for a few years, but, like waves rushing back to shore, Sam would always return to where he started as a wide-eyed boy of five.

And he is as excited as a child waiting for Sta. Claus on Christmas Eve.

“I never expected this role to come my way,” Sam concedes. “And I’m sure that when people watch our production, they would love and appreciate the musical even more.

That guarantee is as good a promise as any that things will be a blast once the curtains rise on this musicale on June 23 .

(STAGES and Trumpets Playshop’s High School Musical runs until July 15 and is presented through a special arrangement with Music Theatre  International. It is also presented by PLDT DSL and McDonalds with sponsors Alaska, Ponds, Bench, Skechers, Purefoods, Bed Head, Easy School Supplies and media partners Studio 23, MYX, The Philippine STAR, K Zone, Total Girl, Hit FM, Magic 89.9, NU 107, Crossover, Click the City and Yehey.com.)
