    Re: Gary Valenciano (OT)

    Gary looking forward
    to next 20 years

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since beginning his career more than 20 years ago, Gary has done it all: appeared in hit movies, received accolades for his performances, garnered several major awards for his music, and toured the Philippines and the world to bring his unique brand of artistry to audiences around the globe.

And he does not seem to have any plans of slowing down.

Recently, Gary traveled to Bangkok, Thailand to help launch Prestige magazine in a grand event held at the posh Oriental Hotel. From there, he flew back to Manila, then on to Cebu for an inspirational concert at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. Dubbed "Gary V: Soul Full," the event served as the launching of the newly established Citichurch. The concert featuring Gary with Mon Faustino, the Powerplay Band and his sons Paolo and Gabriel, is reportedly the most successful concert ever staged at the hotel. It drew out more than 5,000 people and tickets were sold out two days before the event

This last quarter of the year, Gary goes on another US tour. "Gary Valenciano US 2005" brings Gary to McAllen Convention Center, McAllen, Texas on Oct. 9, Meany Hall in Seattle on Oct. 28, Cache Creek Events Center on Oct. 29, Sundome Tampa in Florida on Nov. 4 and the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City with Zsa Zsa Padilla as Gary’s special guest on Nov. 5.

The two other schedules are Nov. 11 at Pechanga Auditorium in California and Nov. 12 at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles.

One of the highlights of the US tour was Gary’s guesting at the "700 Club" last October 4. Also shown during his guesting was a feature on him and his musical career that can be seen on the website http://www.cbnmusic.com along with a transcription of Gary’s interview. His feature was aired locally on Channel 17 (Sky Cable-Trinity Broadcasting) last Oct. 5 at 11:30 a.m.

And even while he continues to score with audiences abroad, Gary’s career in Manila has not slowed down at all.

Aside from co-hosting "ASAP 05" every Sunday, Gary continues to reap major citations for his music. In the recent 18th Aliw Award, Gary bagged the Best Male Concert Performance in a Major Venue (for his "Thankful" concert) and Entertainer of the Year, plus a Hall of Fame award. Last May, he was given the "Best Performance by a Male Recording Artist" trophy for the song "How Did You Know" under Star Records. This marks the second straight year that Gary took home this major award. This victory is Gary’s seventh award for the same category.

Last Aug. 29, MTV Philippines also presented him with the first MTV Generations Award, a lifetime achievement award in recognition of his career that has spanned decades and broken boundaries.

Even in the recording scene, Gary is unstoppable. He recently released a new album entitled "Pure Heart" under Star Records. The album contains 10 tracks, including "Ikaw Lamang," the theme from the Star Cinema movie "Dubai" which topbills Claudine Barretto, Aga Muhlach and John Lloyd Cruz and is directed by Rory Quintos.

At this juncture, Gary says that he is looking forward to the next 20 years of his career as he moves on to new and greater heights to bring his music and his love of God to audiences everywhere.

Along with Gary’s appearance on the show will be a short feature on him and his musical career that will appear on the website http://www.cbnmusic.com along with a transcription of Gary’s interview.

Siyanga pala, last May ay binigyan si Gary ng award na Best Performance by a Male Recording Artist trophy para sa kanta niyang How Did You Know mula sa Star Records.

Last August 29, MTV Philippines also presented him with the first MTV Generations Awards, a lifetime achievement award in recognition of his career that has spanned decades and broken boundaries, and for his music which continues to inspire generations of artists and music fans both here and abroad.

Five weeks siyang mawawala't ang two weeks ay for medical reasons.

Magugustuhan naman talaga ang album dahil sa mga kantang Ikaw Lamang, How Did You Know, Because of You, Anak, Kailan, Kailangan Kita, My Destiny, at Lipad ng Pangarap, station ID ng TFC.

I don't know if it's Ogie's fault, pero kung ako, hindi ko gagawin 'yun. I'm not blaming him, but it's his song and they (Viva Records) own the publishing. But if I were in his shoes, I'll wait for six months."

    Re: Gary Valenciano (OT)

Gary V reacts to Ogie Alcasid’s latest single

    By JOJO PANALIGAN

If it were me, I wouldn’t have released it as a single—at least not within six months of release of the first recording so the latter would have a chance to establish itself," says superstar Gary Valenciano to Manila Bulletin when asked for reaction to celebrated singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid’s issuance of "Ikaw Lamang" as banner single in the latter’s just-released "Greatest Hits" CD.

"Ikaw Lamang," penned by Alcasid, was first identified to Gary as theme song in the movie "Dubai." The sweeping orchestral ballad is even included in Gary’s CD "Pure Heart" under Star Records that also has another Alcasid-written song, "Kailangan Kita."

Ogie sang his version of "Ikaw Lamang" last week in the Sunday-variety show that he hosts, "S.O.P.," announcing it as his new single.

Gary acknowledges that contractually, nothing could stop Ogie from doing so since it’s "his song." "But I just thought it was already understood—an unwritten agreement between artists—that no one would release the same song when the first is just starting to take off. I thought exclusivity would apply even if not verbalized."

He certainly practices what he preaches. With his two decade-plus reign in the business of unmatched record in churning out hit songs across generations, Gary has been asked countless of times for his songs by other artists interested to rehash these.

"But I always make sure that the songs I give out are ones that can already be remade based on reasonable time lapse between releases," says Gary. "And in the event my record company would opt to ride on the remade version, I’d be first in line to stop my company from doing so."

Gary avers, though, that Ogie’s coming out with his own version of "Ikaw Lamang" is the reason Star Records is pushing for a new single (remake of Jim Brickman’s "My Destiny") from "Pure Heart."

"The real reason is that I’d be going to the States next week and would be staying there for five months to do some shows," says Gary. "By then, we’re not even sure if the movie would still be on theaters so we thought having another single out would be best."

The superstar reveals that "Ikaw Lamang" underwent some fine-tuning before the final version was arrived at.

"Some people thought the tempo was too slow. Others were not sold on the arrangement. I had to tap on Mon Faustino to rearrange the song to better fit the movie ‘Dubai,’ too," he says.

Gary emphasizes he is not placing the blame on nor has illfeelings towards Ogie. "It could be his record company that decided to have his version released. Or maybe it was radio stations that wanted his version on air. Ogie and I have not spoken about it (yet)," says he.

Will he still do an Ogie song in the future?

"Maybe I will. But I’d probably add clauses in the contract so that this won’t happen again," Gary ends.

Tampok na mga awitin sa kanyang "Pure Heart" album ang "Ikaw Lamang," "How Did You Know," "Because of You," "Kailangan Kita," "My Destiny," "Kailan," "Anak," "Lift Up Your Hands," "Lipad ng Pangarap" at "Gumising Na! (Tayo’y Magkaisa)".

Sabagay, this year nga lang ay katakut-takot na awards ang nakuha ng singer -- 7th Best Performance by a Male Atrity Trophy (Awit Awards), Entertainer of the Year (Aliw Awards), Generous Award (MTV Pilipinas) at Lifetime Achievement Awards dahil sa contribution niya sa music industry.

    Gary reveals secret of longevity

    FREEHAND
    MARIO BAUTISTA
    People's Journal

GARY Valenciano says 2005 has been an incredible year for him. He's had successful concert series here and abroad, notably "Symphony of the Heart." He got a record-breaking 7th best male performer Awit Award for "How Did You Know," the Aliw Entertainer of the Yeard Award that elevated him to its hall of fame, and the first Generations Award from MTV Pilipinas. He made a beautiful music video for his song "Break Me" dedicated to his late friend, Bella Tan. He was tapped by TFC (The Filipino Channel) to sing its theme song, "Lipad ng Pangarap." He now has a new hit song in "Ikaw Lamang," the theme song of "Dubai," which is included in his first album with Star Records, "Pure Heart," that reached gold status in just two months.

For someone who's 41, he seems like he's just starting his career with so many great achievements in a row.

"I really can't ask for more as the Lord has been so good to me," he says. What's the secret of his longevity? "First is good management. My wife Angeli, my sister Gina, and other caring persons help guide me and take care of my career. Then, you should be true to your craft and make sure it comes from your heart. Last, of course, is the Lord. I gave my life to Him and he said 'I will keep you fruitful, green and fresh even in old age.' I think He's living up to His promises."

Gary is leaving on Tuesday, October 27, for another US concert tour. He'll be in Seattle on October 28, Cache Creek, California on October 30, Tampa, Florida on Novembber 4, Atlantic City on November 5, Pechanga California on November 11, and L.A. on November 12. During that time, he'll also consult a diabetes specialist to attach an insulin pump on him so he's blood sugar will be easier to manage. Gary will also be promoting "Pure Heart" in the US, which has 10 cuts. Aside from "Ikaw Lamang," the other great cuts are Jim Brickman's "Destiny," "How Did You Know," "Kailan," and his version of "Because of You."

Seattle, Washington, Okt. 28; Cache Creek, Calif,. Okt. 30; Tampa, Florida, Nob. 4; Atlantic City, New Jersey, Nob. 5; Pechanga, Calif., Nob. 11 at LA, Nob. 12. Because of You", "How Did You Know", "Anak", at "Kailangan Kita."

But he’s not blaming him, malumanay na sabi ni Gary when asked about it sa presscon ng bago niyang album.
By February next year, he’ll be doing a new album under Universal Records.
Barely two months since the release of his “Pure Heart” album ay certified Gold status na ito, with sales of over 15,000 units and still selling.
On Tuesday (Oct. 25), Gary is leaving again for the States para sa second leg ng kanyang US tour. Magpe-perform siya sa six key cities from Los Angeles to Atlantic City. He’ll be away for over a month.

Life surely begins at 40 to most people, even to our artists.

Gary Valenciano, at 41 and marking his 22nd year in show business, takes on his career with the enthusiasm and zest of a beginner, of a showbiz newcomer and he’s not letting up.

Jamie Rivera (real name: Mary Jane Cruz) will turn 40 on August 29, spanning a career period of 18 years and she says her new current image is her own way of coming up with a new Jamie Rivera.

Is it a mere coincidence that Star Records recently came up with their new albums with songs which bridges the years, the then and now, which may appeal also to the youth. Indeed, Life is once more beginning for both.

    * * *

The year 2005 is probably Gary Valenciano’s busiest year, with TV outings every Sunday at ASAP on ABS-CBN, his concert tours here in the country and the US, plus his commitment as a Unicef ambassador in Asia.

In fact, this year he got his 7th Best Performance by a Male Artist award for How Did You Know and the Entertainer of the Year at the Aliw Awards. Plus a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the music industry, the first Generations Award from MTV Pilipinas.

His recent concert Symphony of the Heart at the Araneta, first time with the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra was most successful. Probably this will have a repeat in December.

Early this month, he had the first leg of his US tour at Houston, McCaller and El Paso, Texas and Chicago. This stint was after his two city ASAP show last July in Pasadena and San Francisco.

Gary also sang the theme song of Dubai which is Ogie Alcasid’s Ikaw Lamang and the TFC station ID Lipad ng Pangarap.

Two months ago, he came up with his first album for Star Records – Pure Heart – and since it has sales over 15,000 units by now, he is set to receive the Gold Record award at noon today at ASAP.

And he’s still out to continue with his second leg of his US tour. In fact he is leaving on Tuesday (Oct. 25) for the US. He is set to perform in Seattle (Washington) on October 28. He will be in Cache Creek, California on October 30.

Gary has four more cities in November: Tampa, Florida (November 4), Atlantic City (November 5), Pechanga, California (November 11) and Los Angeles (November 12). He is set to promote the album in these shows.

Gary on Ogie: I don't blame him

GARY Valenciano is going back to the US for the second leg of his US tour. So, his fans in "ASAP" will be missing him for five weeks. But it's not all work for Gary in the U.S. as he will have to have another medical checkup. He is going to try a new device called Insulin Pop which would lessen the burden of giving himself shots of insulin from time to time.

In the recent press launch for his new album "Pure Energy" under Star Records (it contains the songs "Ikaw Lamang," "How Did You Know," "Because of You," "Anak," "Kailangan Kita," "My Destiny," and "Lipad ng Pangarap" which serves as the station ID of TFC replacing Lea Salonga's), he reveals that when he had a check-up here in Manila, he was alarmed when the doctor told him that there was a lump in his left lung. But when he had a check-up again in the U.S., the doctor told him there was nothing to be alarmed of— the irregularity in his heartbeat is likewise manageable.

Talking about the album, some reporters asked him about the song "Ikaw Lamang" which is also included in Ogie Alcasid's new album which only had a short time gap of release as his album.

For Gary, it is unethical but he isn't sure if Ogie was at fault, if at all. He stressed that if he was in his (Ogie's) shoes, he won't do that, for six months, at least. "But I don't blame him," Gary V clarifies. "It is his song and Viva Records owns the publishing."

Meanwhile, when Ogie was asked about this, he said: "Okay lang 'yun. It is the publishing company's decision. Saka, greatest hits nga ang title nung album ko, so, kailangan isama ko talaga 'yun."

We wonder if this talk would simply end this way, or there would be a bigger controversy to follow.

"Angeli practically runs my life, my career and my children," pag-amin ni Gary sa launch ng kanyang unang album sa Star Records.

Mr. Pure Energy Gary Valenciano leaves tomorrow for the second leg of his US concert but he had a press conference-cum-album launch last week at the ABS-CBN for his album under Star Records titled "Pure Heart." This is his first album under Star Records and it contains theme songs of several Star Cinema movies, including the current hit "Ikaw Lamang" from the movie "Dubai."

But this doesn't mean Gary has severed his ties with Universal Records since he is still under contract with the record company. In fact, he's finishing a new album - pop-themed album - to be released next year. "The reason Pure Heart pushed through with Star Records was because the late Bella Tan allowed us to do this project since she knew I've recorded several movie theme songs for Star Cinema and doing a compilation album would be good for me as well."

"This is a new experience for me. I may not be moving on to another company but it feels great to be able to get the chance to work with Star Records, and I'm hoping to do other projects with them in the future," said Gary.

Barely two weeks since the release of the album, "Pure Heart" has reached the Certified Gold status, with sales of over 15,000 units and counting. At the rate the album's sales is going, it will surely turn Platinum in no time. The "ASAP 05" mainstay and co-host received his Gold Record Award yesterday in "ASAP 05."

Gary also launched yesterday the new single of the album titled "Destiny" which also features Ms. Ella May Saison. Also in the "Pure Heart" album are the songs "Because of You," "How Did You Know," "Anak," and "Kailangan Kita."

Gary is all set to promote the album in the second leg of his US tour. He performs in Seattle, Washington on October 28, Cache Creek, California on October 30, Tampa, Florida on November 4, Atlantic City, New Jersey on November 5, Pechanga, California on November 11 and Los Angeles, California on November 12. He will be away for five weeks.

Gary V. sets up US tour 2005

Gary Valenciano is one of local music’s most well-traveled artists. Since beginning his career more than 20 years ago, Gary has toured throughout the Philippines and the world, bringing his unique brand of artistry to audiences around the globe.

The concert— which drew a record crowd of over 5,000 – reportedly making it the most successful concert ever staged at the hotel, with tickets sold out two days before the show – featured Gary with Mon Faustino, the Powerplay Band, and his sons Paolo and Gabriel.

This month, Gary is set to do yet another US tour. Dubbed "Gary Valenciano US 2005," the first leg of this tour took Gary to four US cities – Houston, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; El Paso, Texas and McAllen, Texas – for shows.

The second leg starts on Oct. 28 (Meany Hall, Seattle, Washington), with other tour dates on Oct. 30 (Cache Creek Events Center, Cache Creek), Nov. 4 (Sundome Tampa, Tampa, Florida) and Nov. 5 at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City with Zsa Zsa Padilla as Gary’s special guest. There will be two other shows to wrap up the second leg of the tour on Nov. 11 (Pechanga Auditorium, California) and Nov.12 at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles.

Aside from co–hosting "ASAP 05" every Sunday, Gary continues to reap major citations for his music. In the recent 18th Aliw Awards, Gary bagged the Best Male Concert Performance in a Major Venue (for his "Thankful" concert) and Entertainer of the Year, plus a Hall of Fame award. Last May, he was given the "Best Performance by a Male Recording Artist" trophy for the song "How Did You Know" under Star Records. This marks the second straight year that Gary took home this major award. This victory is Gary’s seventh award for the same category.

In the recording scene, Gary recently released a new album entitled "Pure Heart" under Star Records. It contains 10 breathtaking and remarkable tracks including "Ikaw Lamang," the theme from the Star Cinema movie "Dubai" which topbills Claudine Barretto, Aga Muhlach and John Lloyd Cruz and is directed by Rory Quintos.

    HighSpeed
    Secret of Gary’s staying power
    Ronald Constantino

STAYING POWER – Gary Valenciano’s 41 years old, more than 20 years of which were spent in showbiz. He started singing in the early ‘80s. His current album, "Pure Heart," which he did for Star Records, is now gold.

What’s the secret, if it can be called one, of Gary V’s durability?

    He enumerated three:

Good management, being true to one’s craft, and giving one’s life to God.

THREE WOMEN – Gary’s being managed by Genesis, headed by his wife Angeli Pangilinan and sister Gina V. Martinez. He credits them for his staying power, adding another name, Vina S. Pareja, his longtime road manager.

Angeli recalls that after the ABS-CBN Kapamilya show in Los Angeles a few months back, Gary suffered a near fatal diabetic attack in a hotel they were billeted. She thought her husband was a goner as Vina bodily carried Gary in her hefty arms, screaming, "Oh my God, Oh my God."

Mrs. Valenciano had the presence of mind to call 911, but even before doing so, she texted her sister-in-law Gina to pray, pray, pray for Gary. By coincidence Gina and her friends were having Bible study and prayer meeting. They prayed non-stop for 30 minutes until they learned Gary was okay.

The medical staff of 911 ar-rived in 10 minutes and re-vived Gary who was lying on the hotel lobby, surrounded by the "ASAP" people who all came upon learning of the singer’s condition.

NEAR PERFECTION – All these years, Gary V tries to attain near perfection, not wanting to shortchange his audience. At times, he has his bad mood, but people around Gary understands. They know he settles for nothing but the best. Mr. Pure Energy (the tag courtesy of Ernie Pecho, PR of Universal Records, Gary’s home studio, which very generously allowed him to wax "Pure Heart" for Star Records. That is being true to one’s craft.

GOD-CENTERED – Gary V, along with his family (Angeli and children Paolo, 21, Gabriel, 17, and Kiana 12), is God-centered. He quotes the saying "I will keep you fruitful even in old age. Ever green and fresh."

Angeli discloses that one of Gary’s bestselling albums is the inspirational "Keep Me Out of the Dark," exceeding the 200,000 mark.

US TOUR – Today, Tuesday, Gary flies to the US for the second leg of his tour, covering several cities in the West and East Coasts. He’ll certainly sing many of the cuts in "Pure Heart," especially "Lipad ng Pangarap," the theme of TFC (The Filipino Channel), which reaches not only America, but Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, as well.

For lack of a better term, "Pure Heart" may well be described as "ballad-ish," containing such love songs as "Ikaw Lamang," "How Did You Know," "Because of You," "My Destiny," "Kailan." Plus the Freddie Aguilar classic, "Anak," the inspirational "Lift Up Your Hands" and "Gumising Na! (Tayo’y Magkaisa)."

PASSION – Gary Valenciano’s current passion is mountain biking in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. With him are some 25 bikers, including Dominic Ochoa. They bike early in the morning for two to three hours, twice or thrice a week. They savor the fresh mountain air as they bike through the trails planted to mangoes, pineapple, banana, and other fruits.

In all likelihood, mountain biking will be an enduring passion. Gary says he gets a new kind of high after biking, tired but exhilarated.

He gets a chance to talk to Sta. Rosa folk and sees for himself how people suffer. He tells the Unicef people that the biggest problem of the country is hunger. "A parent can endure hunger but he can’t take seeing his children go hungry."

Gary V is Unicef’s ambassador of goodwill.
