'Agent X44,’ expected to be another Star Cinema blockbuster, opens today
Crispina Martinez Belen
Vhong Navarro’s starrer, "Agent X44," is predicted to be Star Cinema’s blockbuster this 2007, considering the fact that every year, it has been the film company’s tradition to come up with box-office hit movies. It is remembered that in 2006, Star Cinema’s opening salvo, "Don’t Give Up On Us," starring Judy Ann Santos and Piolo Pascual was a phenomenal hit. "Agent X44" is expected to be another lucky opening salvo for Star Cinema because it has all the ingredients of a surefire hit – lots of action, lots of laughs, lots of romance, and lots of everything. And it brings together the winning tandem of Vhong Navarro and director Joyce Bernal, who were behind the blockbuster spoof "D’Anothers." This is Vhong’s third solo starrer, after "Gagamboy" and "Mr. Suave." Also in the cast of "Agent X44" are a bevy of beauties: Juliana Palermo, Mariel Rodriguez, and Cass Ponti, with Pokwang and Mura providing the laughs. Completing the cast are Epy Quizon, Uma Khouny, and John Lapus. Vhong’s character, Agent X44, is inspired by the unsinkable screen spy popularized in the 60s and early 70s by Tony Ferrer who appears as himself in the movie. Ferrer, who is the father of Mutya Crisostomo and Maricel Laxa, was one of the top action stars in those times and probably the most popular and most enduring among the local actors who also followed in the footsteps of Hollywood ’s James Bonds (Sean Connery and Roger Moore among them). In the movie, Vhong as Agent X44 is tasked to search for the stolen dagger of Lapu-Lapu. But first, he has to hurdle all sorts of challenges in the process. As in the popular James Bond movies, in "Agent X44," Vhong is also surrounded by an array of beautiful, sexy, and outlandish ladies, as shown in the movie’s exciting music video which has been, like the trailer, making heads turn. Touted as the country’s "Prince of Comedy," Vhong is very proud of "Agent X44." It was one role he loved playing to the hit, he said. Vhong excitedly said. The lady box-office director only has praises for her lead star and the other members of the cast. She said "kami kasi ni Vhong, at saka nung ibang cast, galing kami sa ‘D’Anothers.’

Today is Agent X44 Day!
Viewers will be treated to one unforgettable blast of laughter as Star Cinema, Vhong Navarro and Direk Joyce Bernal once more join forces in bringing you this year’s biggest movie, Agent X44! Vhong, now touted as the Prince of Comedy is excited with his latest big screen outing, as he was terribly missed by his fans! Her leading lady, Mariel Rodriguez could also not contain her excitement over her big screen debut. Kasi na push back yung date eh. So ngayon happy na ako kasi at least start siya ng New Year ipapalabas. Sana it will be good for all of us. Sana we’ll start the year with a big bang." On the other hand, box office director Joyce Bernal, who first teamed up with Vhong in the movie Da Anothers, only has praises for his lead star and cast. Or tawanan lang kami ng tawanan, parang kunwari nagsesetup yung cinematographer naming si Charlie Peralta, may ilang kakanta or nag one man show. Mag-mamagic, kumakanta-kanta. Si Pokwang, Si Vhong nagpeperform, kanya-kanyang performance yan. Lahat ng tao napapatawa nila." Direk Joyce also adds that she and Vhong have this certain "connection" which makes their movies a certified laugh-fest. "We try very hard na ang lumabas na humor ay yung sa aming dalawa." The multi-awarded director stated. Agent X44 also stars Pokwang, Cassandra Ponti, Uma Khouny, John Lapus, Epi Quizon, Julianna Palermo and the original Agent X44, Tony Ferrer. Opening 2007 with a bang, Agent X44 starts showing today, January 17, in over 100 theaters nationwide.

Hindi man daw nito napupuno (as in sold out ang tickets) ang mga sinehan, naging consistent ito sa pagiging number one among its competitors simula nang magbukas ito last Jan. 17, up to the time we are writing this column.
Here’s congratulating Vhong and the rest of the cast and Direk Joyce Bernal.

Maricel, who came with Imelda, said eager siyang mapanood ang pelikulang Agent X44, na pinangungunahan nina Vhong Navarro, Pokwang, Mariel Rodriguez, Juliana Palermo at Cass Ponti. Her dad, Tony Ferrer (real family name Laxa), has a cameo role in the said film. Ipinagmamalaki raw sa kanya ng ama ang pelikula, which is adapted from a series of movies which Tony, as Agent X44, did in the mid-’60s. Told that Agent X44, produced by Star Cinema and directed by Joyce Bernal, is making a killing at the tills, Maricel said: “I have to congratulate my dad. Hihingi rin ako ng blowout sa kanya.” Maricel herself will reportedly do a soap with ABS-CBN. People's Tonight

CONGRATULATIONS to Vhong Navarro whose first film for the year 2007, "Agent X44," is making a killing at the tills. Star Cinema, producer of the movie, reports that "Agent X44," grossed a cool P9.5 million on its opening day last Wednesday. Directed by Joyce Bernal, "Agent X44" is inspired by a series of films which Tony Ferrer popularized in the late ‘60s. Produced by one of the country’s film firms at that time, Tagalog Ilang Ilang Pictures (TIIP), "Agent X44" and its 14 series established Tony as an action star."Those were the days," Tony said. He was at the premiere of the movie last Tuesday at the Cinema 10 of Megamall. "I’m so glad for the job Vhong did for this "Agent X44" remake. Nakaka-panibago. I’m sure the audience will like it. "I feel more grateful to Star Cinema. Dahil sa pelikulang ito, the new generation of moviegoers will become familiar with me." Vhong and his Agent X44 beauties APRYLLE LIABRES (Contributor)
22 January 2007
TONY FERRER can now rest easy. His crown as Philippine cinema’s premier secret agent has been passed on, and is now in good hands. The heir apparent is comedian Vhong Navarro, whose latest film, Agent X44—inspired by the character made popular
by Ferrer in the 70s—opened in Metro Manila theaters last week. The movie was Star Cinema’s first big offering for 2007, and came on the heels of the romance-comedy Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo which topped the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) box-office race, setting a precedent that Vhong and company felt pressured to live up to. But despite this, Vhong had a lot of fun making the movie, which was directed by Joyce Bernal, with whom he worked in the horror-comedy D’ Anoders. The only difference between this and the original Tony Ferrer films is that the latter were basically hardcore action flicks that relied a lot on the suave appeal of Ferrer (who was often described as the Filipino equivalent of James Bond), whereas this one is a campy comedy. Direk Joyce and Vhong played around with the script to give it a different flavour. “It’s so funny, because first of all, the idea of me playing a serious character like Agent X44, of course people will think something’s up. They can’t possibly think I’d be serious in this movie,” laughed Vhong in an interview days before the movie opened. The movie’s director, Joyce Bernal, says that the atmosphere on the set was very light. “Vhong and I, whenever we do a movie together, we always make sure that it doesn’t seem like work. While we were making this movie, there were times that we would find ourselves just laughing, and the cinematographer (Charlie Peralta) would just be setting up. Without us knowing, he was already shooting, and those clips would go into the final print.” And if James Bond had the Bond Girls, naturally, Vhong has his own Agent X44 beauties in this movie: Mariel Rodriguez and Cassandra Ponti. The movie also stars Uma Khouny, John Lapus (who was still with ABS-CBN when the movie was filmed; he is now officially a talent of the rival network), Mura, Epi Quizon, Juliana Palermo and Pokwang. Also appearing in a cameo role is the original Agent X44, Tony Ferrer. http://www.khaleejtimes.com/CityHome.asp?xfile=data/citytimes/2007/January/citytimes_January150.xml§ion=citytimes&col=

Undercover laughter & calculated mayhem By Philip Cu-Unjieng The Philippine Star 01/25/2007
Star Cinema’s opening salvo for 2007 brings back the team behind the surprise hit of yesteryear, D’Anothers’ director Bb. Joyce Bernal and leading man Vhong Navarro. The film is a spoof of all those Filipino secret agent/spy movies of the past decades, and it dutifully rolls out veteran actor, Tony Ferrer, the original Agent X-44. There’s calculated mayhem, extreme physical comedy/choreography, witty asides and a functioning, but one-dimensional script. Along with Vhong, the cast’s mainstays include movie novice Mariel Rodriguez, Cassandra Ponti, Mura, Epy Quizon, Julianna Palermo, and stealing every scene she’s in as the Spy School directress, comedienne Pokwang.
The film opens at the Philippines’ premier spy school, and as soon as the students dutifully display their facility with languages and Vhong shows off his fluency in "Ngongo," we know what kind of movie we’re in. As head teacher, Pokwang is a bizarre Adolf Hitler wannabe with matching pidgin German – just like Ramon Zamora in TV’s Super Laff-In of the ’70s. The threadbare plot has to do with the recovery of Lapu Lapu’s bolo, as stolen from a museum by a gang of gays. The next day, students on a field trip discover that a hairdryer has been left in place of the bolo and we overhear one child ask, "Bakla ba si Lapu Lapu?"
Mariel shows a surprising willingness and enthusiasm for babaw comedy and that’s great, because it comes as such as a surprise when placed against the context of her "cool" looks and demeanor. Pokwang’s energy is downright infectious, while Mura also makes amore than favorable impression. Vhong is Vhong, and no one in our local movie scene comes as close as he does to being our version of Jim Carrey.
The script aims for low-brow broad jokes and asides, and the humor is principally derived from sight gags and visual comedy. Besides the gang of gays led by John Lapus, there are slaves and catamites, a posse of vampires, sumo wrestlers and Japanese ninjas and a tribe of thieving Amazons. The choreographed action sequences are entertaining, but I thought some brisker, tighter editing would have improved the film’s flow. I also didn’t much like how farts as humor became a recurring theme and not just used once. But that’s just me, the audience was lapping it up, and that augurs well for the Bernal-Navarro tandem. Agent X-44 merrily chugs along, knowing that it’s mainlining broad comedy in a manner that ensures its success.

By: Nel Alejandrino Back in town is direk Joyce Bernal, who arrived Wednesday from Italy, where her movie, Agent X-44, ay ipinalabas sa isang filmfest na in-organized doon. And it elicited unprecedented laughter from the audience.
Sayang nga daw at di niya kasama si Vhong Navarro, who plays the title role. He would have gained instant popularity among the Italian audience, ani direk Joyce. People's Tonight http://www.journal.com.ph/index.php?issue=2007-04-27&sec=3&aid=16339
