Who would have thought that after placing second in the ABS-CBN talent search Little Big Star (LBS), Makisig Morales will never be wanting in TV assignments? The boy became a familiar sight on primetime TV when he was tapped to play the role of a superhero on Kapamilya network’s just-concluded fantaserye Super Inggo. Super Inggo’s power seems to have worked wonders for Makisig’s career. He does not only get to sing or act, but host Little Big Superstar with Sarah Geronimo as well. "I thank God for what’s happening in my career and I’m so happy," Makisig says. Emerging runner-up in the talent show opened a lot of doors for Makisig. It turned his life around. "I give my best every time I get an assignment. Bihira po kasi ’yun di ba?," Makisig says. And strike he does while the iron is hot as Makisig will be seen in the third season of Matt Evans’ starrer Pedro Penduko dubbed Pedro Penduko at Ang Mga Engkantao to premiere on May 5, and every Saturday after Little Big Superstar. In the fantasy adventure, Makisig plays Moy, an Engkantao who can make fire out of thin air. He, together with the other Engkantaos like Josef (Oyo Sotto) who has telekinetic power, the invisible Marie (Maja Salvador), surface climber Dianne (Denise Laurel) and water manipulator Edward (Arron Villaflor) are tasked to protect the human race from the evil ways of Kalagua (Angelika dela Cruz). Pedro Penduko (Matt) joins them in stopping Kalagua from wrecking havoc in the big city. Playing support to Matt is no big deal for Makisig as he enjoys working with him and the other stars of the fantaserye. "Okey lang po na di na bida. Gusto ko naman makasama ibang bida," the 10-year-old says. It only proves that humility is one virtue Makisig has that other stars seem to lack. In fact, he still acts like an ordinary boy off cam. The dutiful son that he is, Makisig still does his share of household chores like washing the dishes every time his schedule permits. He will do whatever he can to ease the load off his mom, Aquilina, who takes care of a brood of seven and another one coming soon. What Makisig couldn’t stand is the rumor about Sarah having a crush on him. "It’s impossible, I’m still young. Ate Sarah is already a grown-up," he protests. But the name Kathryn Bernardo rings a thousand bells in Makisig’s ears as he has a big crush on the young star. Kathryn once played the role of Casoy on Judy Ann Santos’ fantaserye Krystala. The La Colleta Academy fourth grader finds Kathryn adorable. He is also wisely setting aside ideas of ending up with Sarah. After all, he’s not mature enough to be talking about having a serious relationship right now. What is serious for Makisig at this time is his career. He and his family live comfortably in San Mateo, Rizal as his star continues to shine in showbiz. Kwek Kwek, the food franchise business he won in LBS, also contributes a lot to the family income. "My mom and my sister Mayumi are managing our stalls in Marikina while my dad Uldarico accompanies me to tapings," Makisig says. His dad, who used to be one of the singing waiters in a restaurant, also devotes time to Makisig’s vocal training. A new album for Makisig entitled Mak and the Dudes will be released soon and a US tour with the Pinoy Dream Academy winners is in the works. Makisig will also go to London for a film with Sharon Cuneta under the direction of Chito Roño.

With the elections just 11 days to go, now Chito Roño can start seriously in preparing his Sharon Cuneta movie which will be filmed in London.

For obvious reason, schedules have been delayed. Last year even before Christmas, Chito told us he had already done his location hunting in UK for this movie.

Sharon portrays a caregiver. And for some cute touches, ABS-CBN’s child prodigy Makisig Morales (of the Super Inggo fame) will join the cast. Heard that when Direk Chito met Makisig for the first time, it was "instant fascination."

With the election campaign getting in the way, the April timetable was dropped. Now it will be after elections, upon Sharon’s sweet time. After all, she had been working too hard for husband Kiko Pangilinan.

“Iyong room na may aircon, sa mommy at daddy ko. Pinapayagan nila kaming lahat na matulog doon para naka-aircon din kami,” paliwanag ng bagets.
   
Excited si Makisig sa nalalapit niyang movie with Sharon Cuneta, which will be filmed in London.
   
Kinausap na raw siya ni Direk Chito Roño at instant ang kanilang naging bonding.
   
He has yet to bond with Sharon, dahil busy pa ito sa pagtulong sa kampanya ng asawang si Sen. Kiko Pangilinan, who is seeking re-election in the May 14 elections.

Kamakailan lang ay sinadya namin ang show ng Mac and the Dudes sa SM Marilao, na pinangungunahan ng mabait at gwapitong si Makisig Morales. Kasama rin sina Rhap Salazar, Jai­rus Aqui­no, Kyle Balili at Robert Villar, nagpu-promote sila ng ka­nilang album na “Oldies But Kiddies”.

Makisig seems at ease talking about working with Sharon. How much does he know her? we asked him.

"Nakapag-guest na ho ako sa kanyang show, ‘Sharon.’ And she seems a nice person. Mabait ho siya sa akin," he answered.

How prepared is he for his role is the movie?

"Basta I was told that I will play Tita Sharon’s son. E, talaga ho naming isang anak na lalaki ako kaya siguro, aarte na lang ako nang kung ano ako sa tunay na buhay," he replied.

Will they be singing together in the movie?

"Hindi ko po alam. Pero, sana, mag-duet kami. I’ll be proud to record a song with her," again Makisig answered.

Makisig named ambassador: Yes, children can help too!


It was a worthwhile afternoon we spent with the people behind Nickelodeon Philippines last Monday at Max’s Restaurant in Quezon City when they thoughtfully trained the spotlight on the youth (hey, they are practically children) and their special role in helping make this world a better place.

The special event was the announcement of the appointment of child actor Makisig Morales as its special ambassador (better known in Nickelodeon lingo as the "share-man of the board") as part of Nick’s The Big Help Campaign.

The Big Help is a nationwide pro-social campaign where kids are enjoined to help in their community via six basic actions: Visit, Fix, Clean, Give, Share and Care for kids to easily interpret and incorporate these values in their lives. For this year, Nickelodeon focuses on the action word SHARE and the campaign urges all Nicksters (those who are fans of Nickelodeon) ages 2-14 to SHARE in whatever way they can — sharing toys, books, clothes, joke maybe, or the most important of all, their time.

Although he came late for the appointed event due to a complicated schedule they had at the US Embassy that same morning, Makisig nonetheless proved to be a real trooper, worthy to be called Nickelodeon’s Ambassador.

We can tell that the boy takes his social responsibility seriously. He says of his new job, "Ang mga bata ay kaya ring mag-share, kahit maliit na bagay, basta makatulong sila. Sobrang saya ko at ako ay napiling Nickelodeon’s Big Help Ambassador. Gusto ko talagang makatulong sa mga taong nangangailangan."

Nickelodeon may have been touched by the gesture of generosity that Makisig showed them when he reportedly donated his winnings to the Big Help Campaign at the Pinoy Wannabe contest of Nickelodeon this year. Such a big heart for someone so young!

We dare say his parents, members of the Couples for Christ community in San Mateo Rizal, are doing a wonderful job raising the Grade 5 Makisig at the La Coleta Academy also in San Mateo. He is among 8 kids, all of whom are members of the Kids For Christ group, too. Makisig have gotten his "big heart" from his parents who are active supporters of the Gawad Kalinga program. No wonder that at such a young age, his parents were able to inculcate in him the value of helping and sharing. Makisig shares that he has joined Gawad Kalinga projects in the past and he finds happiness in doing so.

Makisig first fascinated us when he placed second at the Little Big Star search with his voice and charisma. At the Kids Choice Awards Preview Party, he wowed the audience with his performance of "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" with his group Mak and the Dudes. And though his fantaserye "Super Inggo" is done, he managed to be a "hero" in the eyes of the kids as he frontlines The Big Help Campaign.

As ambassador, Makisig will spread the virtue of sharing by gracing all Nickelodeon Big Help events, promoting it in various TV stints and guestings, and soon, he will be seen doing PSA (public service announcements) on Nickelodeon this August.

Makisig gives his message regarding Big Help and sharing, "Sana suportahan ng mga magulang ang kanilang mga anak para maraming bata ang makasali sa project na Big Help."

The regular child Makisig loves watching Nickelodeon. His favorite shows are SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora The Explorer, Avatar, Danny Phantom and Blue’s Clues. When he saw SpongeBob during the press con, his face lit up and he was so happy to meet his favorite Nicktoon character.

At the press conference, we were also awed by the show of support of a grade schooler from Southridge, an active member of the Gawad Kalinga Batang Bayani, which has tied-up with Nickelodeon for their projects. GK Batang Bayani is a group of grade school volunteers who help out in raising funds, join building activities in the villages, interact with beneficiary kids and encourage other kids to build houses for kids in need. The Big Help will take a big step in fund raising, assist in home-building in GK Batang Bayani and promote value formation programs as well.

We were touched by the boy’s narration of how he was moved to help the "poor." He said he went with his parents to a Gawad Kalinga project in Baseco in Tondo, Manila after it was gutted down by a huge fire. There, he saw children who didn’t have food to eat and water to drink, aside from the fact that their house burned down. He realized how blessed he was because at their home, he said they have plenty of food and drink.

Nickelodeon has another campaign called The Big Help Special Edition Canisters, a canister design competition open to all Nicksters thriving on the SHARE theme on the design and patterns and ideas. The best design will be the cover of the 10,000 canisters which will be distributed to schools to raise funds for the Kids for ChristGK BAtang Bayani Kapasigan Village community.

Makisig is Big Help’s young ambassador

NICKELODEON’S “Big Help” campaign is back. The Big Help is the Nickelodeon channel’s nationwide social campaign encouraging all Pinoy Nicksters to help their communities through six basic actions: visit, fix, clean, give, share and care. This year, Big Help focuses on the action word SHARE.

Nickelodeon has picked a very appropriate ambassador in the person of popular young actor Makisig Morales. Already considered an icon among Filipino kids because of his Super Inggo popularity, Makisig has wowed the Nickelodeon people at the recent Kids’ Choice Awards Preview Party when his group Mak and the Dudes performed “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.”

Being the “share-man of the board” for the campaign is a task that Makisig welcomes with open arms. He shares, “My parents taught me to always be kind so I’m a really nice person.” As the Big Help emissary in the Philippines, Morales will show by example what “helping big” and “sharing” are all about by promoting the campaign in various TV shows. The little big “share-man of the board” is also scheduled to deliver a public service announcement this August at the Nickelodeon channel.

The year 2007 also sees Nickelodeon joining forces with Gawad Kalinga-Batang Bayani, a group of grade-school volunteers who works hard in raising funds and encouraging other kids to build houses for other children in need. Sam Villaroman, a representative of GK-Batang Bayani, says he was motivated to join the group when he saw children at the Baseco compound in Tondo rummaging through garbage in search for food and water. “We’ve always had lots of food and water in our house but they only had thrash to eat,” he intones.

 

At the recent launch of the Big Help campaign, Makisig and Sam also announced the start of the canister cover design contest for the 10,000 cans which will become Nickelodeon’s Special Edition Canisters. These will be distributed to schools where children can drop their contributions for housing projects in KFC-Batang Bayani Kapasigan Village, a GK-Batang Bayani community in Pasig City.

The Big Help campaign in the Philippines will culminate with a big bang on December 1, 2007. That day, Pinoy Nicksters of all ages will celebrate their Big Help efforts encouraging other kids to join hands in helping those who are less fortunate in their community. The campaign had two previous run in the country, in 2004 and 2005.The very first Big Help was launched by Nickelodeon in the United States in 1994 and the campaign reached Asian shores in 2002. Since then, the Big Help has convinced many kids around the world that helping others can be both fun and priceless.

Nickelodeon introduces new ambassador

Makisig Morales, the cute and loveable tyke that placed second in the singing contest for kids on ABS-CBN, Little Big Star, is going places.

A member of the Kids for Christ (KFC) organization since seven years old, Mak was exposed to the act of giving at a very young age. His parents, who were active members of Couples for Christ (CFC), encouraged him and his seven other siblings to help people who are in need.

Now 10, Makisig is very willing to help as many people as possible. And he does so by encouraging other kids to join Nickelodeon’s Big Help Campaign.

And why is he doing this?

Because he is Nickelodeon’s new ambassador. As such, he is expected to inform kids of the value of helping other people. “Ang saya-saya pong maging [it’s fun to be an] ambassador!” he exclaims.

There is nothing more fulfilling, for this young celebrity, than to share the blessings he receives because he wants other kids to experience that same wonderful feeling he feels now that he is right at the threshold of success.

The Big Help Campaign is actually a partnership between Nickelodeon and Gawad Kalinga-Batang Bayani. It aims to raise funds, and encourage kids to join activities in GK villages, make friends and of course, to build houses for those who need it.

This project is about getting kids to help other kids and Makisig perfectly conveys this message.

The kids can help other kids by sharing many things. Not just money but also books, clothes, time, jokes or even prayers. Small things, if collected together, could become big and better things.

Creative kids can also join the can-design contest. Kids between two to 14 years old can design any concept, pattern and ideas that can best describe the word “sharing.” And the winning entry will cover 10,000 cans that will become Nickelodeon’s The Big Help Special Edition Canisters. It will be distributed to different schools to raise funds to benefit KFC-Batang Bayani Kapasigan Village, a GK-Batang Bayani community based in Pasig. Send entries until Aug. 20.

Naawa ang mga staff ng Super Inggo 1.5 (prequel) kay Ma­kisig Morales dahil lagare ang bagets sa advance taping ng nasabing fantaserye dahil nga paalis na siya sa ka­tapusang ng Ok­tubre para sa shooting naman ng pelikulang London:  Caregiver kasama sina Sharon Cuneta at John Es­trada under Star Cine­ma.

Ayon sa nakatsika naming staff ng Super Inggo 1.5 ay, “Ngarag ang bagets, kapag hindi siya kinukunan, pina­tutulog muna na­min siya at gigisingin na lang kapag kukunan na, wala, e, lupaypay na.”

Bukod kasi sa na­sabing programa ay magtatapos na ang Pedro Penduko at Ang Mga Eng­kantao nila ni Matt Evans ngayon ding Oktubre.

Makisig, insecure sa bagong paborito sa Dos

TOTOO kaya ang nasagap naming balita na nai-insecure si Makisig Morales sa isa pang child actor na si Jairus Aquino?

Dati-rati kasi, si Makisig ang favorite child star sa ABS-CBN, pero simula nang pumasok si Jairus, tila naitsapuwera na siya dahil mas marami itong projects ngayon kesa sa kanya.

Katatapos lang ni Jairus ng Rounin at ngayo’y kasama pa sa Lastikman bilang batang Vhong Navarro.

Samantalang si Makisig, ang huli niyang regular program ay ang Super Inggo at ngayon lang ulit nasundan ng Super Inggo 1.5 na sa Nobyemre pa ang airing.

Matatatandaang si Makisig ang nanalo sa Little Division noon ng Little Big Star ni Sarah Geronimo and there was a time na talagang bidang-bida siya sa network at sunud-sunod ang projects.

Well, sabi nga, weather-weather lang ’yan but then again, ang pinakaimportante pa rin sa lahat na hindi nababali ng panahon ay ang talent.

In this business, you have to have talent para magtagal and in fairness to Makisig, punung-pungo naman siya ng talento kaya hindi siya dapat ma-insecure.
