Hotsilog Album LaunchKhaleej Times

The ‘Manila Sound’ of the 70s was one of the best periods in the development of Original Pilipino Music (OPM). And when one speaks of the ‘Manila Sound’, only one band comes to mind: Hotdog.
The band that launched the careers of Zsa Zsa Padilla and Ella del Rosario, Hotdog popularised hits like Ikaw Ang Miss Universe Ng Buhay Ko, Pers Lab, Annie Batungbakal, Beh Buti Nga, Manila, Langit Na Naman and O, Lumapit Ka. Headed by Dennis Garcia, Hotdog was a truly groundbreaking band as they were the first to use Taglish (Tagalog and English) in their songs, setting the standard for other OPM bands that came after them.
Now, two trendsetters join forces as the ASAP artists—Piolo Pascual, Sarah Geronimo, Rachelle Ann Go, Nina, Gary Valenciano, Sam Milby, Nikki Gil, Jed Madela, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Christian Bautista, Sheryn Regis, Erik Santos, Mark Bautista and Toni Gonzaga—interpret the band’s timeless OPM tunes in Hotsilog, the first official release of ASAP under its very own recording label, ASAP Music. It is the first time that a show is launching its very own recording label.
The album, which is distributed by Star Records, was launched via a concert held at the Virgin Café. The concert was hosted by ASAP regulars Luis Manzano and Geoff Eigenmann and featured performances of songs from the album.
Among the artists present at the launch party were Piolo Pascual, who performed the album’s carrier single, his version of Ikaw Ang Miss Universe Ng Buhay Ko.
However, the loudest applause was reserved for Sheryn Regis, whose rendition of Bongga Ka ‘Day really got the crowd going, and perennial favorite Sarah Geronimo, still fresh from the success of Bituing Walang Ningning, who had the audience eating out of her hand with her version of Hotdog’s kilig hit, Pers Lab.
The song is best remembered for its lyrics: “Tuwing kita’y nakikita/ako’y natutunaw/parang ice cream na bilad/sa ilalim ng araw (Everytime I see you/I melt/like an ice cream cone left out in the sun)”.

School for blind holds benefit concertQuezon City (9 October) -- A computer school for the blind, ATRIEV, will hold a one-of-a-kind benefit concert on October 27, 2006 at the UP Theater, Diliman Quezon City with the title "When You Believe: A Concert for a Cause."
The concert brings together the country’s singing champions and a new breed of blind musical talents, showcasing today’s pop, acoustic and jazz artists back-to-back with ATRIEV’s equally gifted blind talents. Well-known artists include The Akafellas, the Little Big Star Champions, singing heartthrobs like Kris Lawrence and Jed Madela, award-winning performers like
Sheryn Regis and Mon David, and Inspirational Diva Jamie Rivera will share center stage with ATRIEV’s blind performers.
The concert will highlight the “Power of Believing” in the stories of three blind achievers: Julius Charles Serrano, the first blind programmer; Krissy Bisda, the first totally blind recruitment specialist and Alona Bateg, the first non-medical totally blind medical transcriptionist in Asia.
"Their stories will prove that through believing in one’s self, in one’s God and the belief of family and friends, limitations can be conquered," says Tony D. Llanes, Jr. of ATRIEV.
"Since 1994, the non-profit organization, Adaptive Technology for Rehabilitation, Integration, and Empowerment of the Visually Impaired (ATRIEV), has been helping blind people gain access to post-secondary education and mainstream employment. So far, ATRIEV is the only NGO that has skillfully woven together private business enterprise and government agencies to support demand-driven programs for the blind," he said.
Llanes added: "ATRIEV unlocks the hidden power of the blind thru the use of technology. We teach the blind to operate computers with the use of a screen reader. To date, we have trained and empowered over 500 young blind adults who have become medical transcribers, computer instructors, web designers, human resource personnel, practicing social workers, entrepreneurs etc. Through the benefit concert, ATRIEV hopes to train 600 more blind Filipinos in the use of computers.
