Will David Foster build up Charice?

Reader Mike C. Hokson called my attention to an Internet report which mentions famous composer David Foster in the same breath with Charice Pempengco, the ABS-CBN Little Big Star search fourth runner-up who, as Funfare reported in  a “scoop” yesterday, has just appeared as guest on Ellen DeGeneres’ self-titled show (specially requested by Ellen herself).

Here’s an excerpt from that Internet report (about Celine Dion’s winding up her stint in Las Vegas):

Grammy-winning composer/producer David Foster offered an opinion on a future candidate to help fill Celibne’s void in Las Vegas: “Michael Buble,” said Foster, who signed up the Canadian crooner in 2000.

Pointing toward the entrance of the Colosseum, Foster said, “I think Buble could do it.” He was escorting 15-year-old Filipino sensation, Charice Pempengo, who is appearing on Ellen DeGeneres’ show on Tuesday (Dec. 18, US time).

I’m sure people who know who David Foster is will react to that good news with a “Wow, wow, wow!”

For the sake of the uninformed, Foster (with whom I did a phone interview a few years ago) has worked with the likes of The Bee Gees; John Lennon; Michael Buble; Clay Aiken; Josh Groban; Katharine McPhee; Celine Dion; Barbra Sreisand; Kenny Rogers; Faith Hill; The Corrs; George Harrison; Ronnie Hawkins; Chicago; Earth, Wind & Fire; Chaka Khan; Filippa Giordano; Laura Pausini; Whitney Houston; Michael Jackson; Brandy; Luis Miguel; Fred Norris; Richard Marx; Mariah Carey; Destiny’s Child; Vanessa Williams; Anne Murray; Olivia Newton-John; Andrea Bocelli; Deborah Blando; Lisa Marie Presley; Lara Fabian; Dolly Parton; Julio Iglesias; Gordon Lightfoot; Madonna; All-4-One; Ricardo Montaner; Al Jarreau; Kenny Loggins; Natalie Cole; Yolanda Adams; The Tubes; Peter Cetera; and many others.

How soon will Charice Pempengco join that honor roll?

Soon, let’s hope even as we keep four fingers crossed

Celebrity (as of 12/21/2007 4:03 AM)

Charice Pempengco wows Ellen in LA

Charice Pempengco, the 14-year-old Filipino singer whose YouTube videos wowed audiences here and abroad, guested and sang in the American television show "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" last Wednesday (Thursday Manila time), ABS-CBN News Bureau Chief Ging Reyes reported.

Pempengco guested on DeGeneres's nationally-syndicated television show where she sang "And I am Telling You" from the musical Dreamgirls.

After her performance, the audience gave her a standing ovation while host DeGeneres remarked, "you're amazing."

Upon her arrival in Los Angeles, Pempengco also met with music producer Davis Foster and prominent entertainment lawyer Ed Shapiro.

Shapiro said the teenaged singer's talent is "exceptional."

"You don't find the Mariah Careys everyday - they come once in a while. The Whitney Houstons, they don't happen all the time. [We] think Charice is literally that, that next to Whitney, next to Mariah," said Shapiro.

Pempengco was also emotional after her performance on Ellen's show, saying she did not expect that kind of reception in America.

"Yung isa sa dream ko, natupad na. Tapos lalo pa ng sinabi ni Ms. Ellen na 'you're already a big star here,' sabi nya. Tapos proud na proud daw siya sakin -- tuwang tuwa po ako. Hindi ko po akalain na ganito po ako tatanggapin ng mga taga-America. Hindi po nila pinansin kahit na Pinay ako - pinansin nilang pangalan ko," she said.

(One of my dreams came true, especially after Ms. Ellen said that 'you're already a big star here,' and that she's proud of me -- I'm really happy. I did not expect that Americans would welcome me like this. They did not mind that I am a Pinay - they only noticed my name)

Pempengco will return to the Philippines to fulfill several engagements, and she expects that she still has a long way to go after her unforgettable Hollywood experience.

Pempengco was a former contestant on the ABS-CBN show "Little Big Star," a children's singing contest hosted by Sarah Geronimo. She placed 2nd in the show's Big Division (for 10-13 year old competitors), behind Sam Concepcion and Gian Barbarona.

According to show's website (www.ellentv.com), the show "features a diverse mix of celebrity interviews, musical performers, audience participation, and segments spotlighting everyday people with extraordinary stories and talents." It has already won a total of 21 Daytime Emmy Awards, the website said.

    Charise Pempengco, istariray

Ilang beses na siyang na-feature sa The Eleen Degeneres Show at Top 10 show ng E! Channel.

    http://ellen.warnerbros.com/2007/12/charice_pempengco_i_am_telling.php

Ellen Degeneres impressed with Charice Pempengco

Little Big Star finalist Charice Pempengco was rewarded two standing ovations from the audience of The Ellen DeGeneres Show that happened recently.

It is recalled that Ellen herself announced that she wanted to guest Charice, who became popular on the internet. She performed "And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going" and "I Will Always Love You."

Ellen hugged Charice saying, "You’re amazing! You’re amazing! We just witnessed the beginning of this girl’s career that we’re gonna go, ‘I was there, I saw her.’ She is unbelieveable."

Ellen even gave Charice an iPod because the girl lost her own iPod during her flight to the US.

MANILA, Philippines -- Charice Pempengco, the 15-year-old Filipino singer whose YouTube video video landed her a gig on The Ellen Degeneres Show, continues to wow people on the popular online video sharing service, and the Internet in general.

On YouTube, a video clip of the young and talented Pempengco signing on the popular American show, has garnered top honors, including the 16th Top Rated (This Week) Music video on YouTube.

Pempengco was invited to sing live in The Ellen Degeneres Show after the show's staff saw her on YouTube.

The young Filipina who is featured in the YouTube account under the name, “False Voice” features most of her video clips taken from local and foreign television shows. The YouTube account, which was created July 2006 by another person under the name False Voice, has also reached the fifth most viewed musician status in the popular online video service.

    December 23rd, 2007

Young Filipina Diva Wows Ellen Degeneres
Maria Sunantha Quibilan and Joseph Pimentel/Asianjournal.com
LOS ANGELES -- Filipina singing phenom, Charice Pempengco, left the studio audience of the Ellen DeGeneres Show breathless on Wednesday, December 19.

The 15-year-old’s rendition of And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going from the Broadway musical Dreamgirls received an extended standing ovation. She also received another ovation toward the end of the show when she sang Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You.

The performance left DeGeneres impressed and in tears. At the end of Pempengco’s performance, the talk show host was speechless and hugged Pempengco.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show website describes Pempengco’s appearance as “one of the most incredible performances” DeGeneres has ever seen. Pempengco was moved to tears by the overwhelming response of the American audience.

Before Pempengco sang, DeGeneres told her audience that they were in for a treat.

“All right, I’m warning you again right now, I’m going to cry again today,” said DeGeneres. “She’s fifteen years old. We flew her in from the Philippines. She’s never been to the United States before. She doesn’t have a recording contract. She’s never done this before. You are going to be blown away. This is the most incredible gift of all the gifts that we’re giving [away] you’re going to witness something today and say ‘I was there the day she [Charice] sang on the show.’”

Her appearance on the show was Pempengco’s first performance on US Television.

After she performed, Pempengco admits she could not hold back the tears.

“I started crying because I saw all the people giving me Angel standing ovation,” she said to the Asian Journal after her performance. “I’m very proud because I realized [during the performance] I’m here performing in front of Ellen DeGeneres and all the people.”

Prior to her stage appearance, she admits that she was nervous.

“I was a little nervous,” she said. “Of course, I was excited too. It’s my first time performing in American in front of all the wonderful fans. It was a pleasure.”

Pempengco’s talent was first noticed when, at the age of 12, she won third place on the first season of Little Big Star, a singing contest aired on ABS-CBN in the Philippines and internationally on The Filipino Channel.

Besides the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Pempengco has been featured twice in the Daily Ten, a regular show on E! entertainment channel.

A native of Laguna, Philippines, Pempengco, arrived in Los Angeles on December 13. She got a special invitation from DeGeneres after featuring a YouTube video of the young Filipino diva on her daytime show on Nov. 28. The video showed Pempengco singing And I Am Telling You I am Not Going, amazing hosts and audience alike, on Star King, a South Korean TV variety show.

Pempengco credits her popularity to her exposure on the Internet. Her performance on ABS-CBN’s Little Big Star where she belts out Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You has been viewed more than 700,000 times on YouTube. She placed third in the competition.

The popular video sharing is also how DeGeneres found the young Filipino diva.

“We’ve found some good people on YouTube but wait until you see, we had to bring her over here from the Philippines,” said DeGeneres before introducing Pempengco.

    Reaction

It didn’t take long for people around the world to comment on Pempengco’s performance. There is already over 1,000 comments on Ellen’s blog, as of press time.

“One word Ellen...GOOOSEBUMPS!!!,” posted Cherry Ramirez.

“Someone told me that there could only be one Whitney Houston. I think there is another one...Charice Pempengco! I want to see her again on your show Ellen, Please! I’m begging you,” posted Norman of Florida.

    Viewers at home also reacted.

Lenalour Limayo, 30, didn’t know who Pempengco was before a friend sent her a clip of her YouTube performances.

“I started crying,” she said. “It was really emotional to see [Pempengco’s] reaction. She was so happy about the feedback she received from the US audience.”

Attorney Michael Gurfinkel, who paved the way for Pempengco and her mother to travel to the US, said that the comments are an outpouring of Filipino pride.

“This girl is truly amazing,” he said.

    Backstage tears

Millie Gurfinkel said that the people backstage could not hold their emotions when they heard Pempengco sing.

“I’m just very happy for her,” said Racquel Pempengco, Charice’s mother.Pempengco’s mother Racquel, who arrived from the Philippines last week, also could not hold back the tears. This is Racquel’s first ever plane ride. The first time she has left the country. She had never had a passport until now.

“I thought I would never get this chance,” said Racquel. “They helped me realize my dream of seeing my daughter perform in front of the American audience.”

As for what’s next for her young daughter, Racquel said she doesn’t know.

“I told her to always remain humble to always have a foot on the ground while she reaches for the stars,” said Racquel.

Pempengco again wants to thank her fans for their support.

“I really appreciate all the support of my fans and in America,” she said. “I really appreciate everything. Pray for me. I love you all.” (www.asianjournal.com)

    New year, new stars

    TAKE TWO
    Ambet R. Nabus

    12/27/2007

So everybody had a great Christmas! We really hope so. And with the remaining days of 2007, here’s simply praying for all of us to have a brighter and more fun-filled and responsible 2008.

Yes, this may sound so cliche, but isn’t wishing the best for everyone the cheapest form of fun and, yes, the most widely enjoyed even by those who live far? Hala, maghanda na at salubungin ang bagong taon nang may bagong pag-asa at baunin natin uli sa ating mga puso’t isipan ang isang makabuluhang pamumuhay Pinoy (Prepare for the coming year with renewed hope and let’s all strive to keep in our hearts and minds a meaningful Filipino way of life)!

Well, what could be bigger than the pride and honor Internet singing sensation Charice Pempengco received from the American audience (and others worldwide) after she was given two standing ovations when she sang at the famous The Ellen DeGeneres Show that happened a week before Christmas?

The 14-year-old Little Big Star (ABS-CBN show) finalist showed off her singing talent that wowed the American audience, including the Emmy Award-winning host Ellen DeGeneres, who first saw the Pinay singer when she sang in a televised talent contest in Korea titled Star King that hit the video-sharing site YouTube. This prompted the lady host to make an announcement of her desire to locate Charice and invite her to guest on Ellen.

Everything was arranged (plane ticket, accommodations, etc.) by the said US show, and Charice indeed looked like an international star when she was given standing ovations after her rendition of the Dreamgirls song “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.”

“You’re amazing! You’re amazing!” were the only words uttered by Ellen. And when the young Pinay sang her second song during the show’s closing — she effortlessly rendered Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You — Ellen proudly stated, “We just witnessed the beginning of this girl’s career that we’re gonna go, ‘I was there, I saw her.’ She is unbelieveable.”
