Lance as Romeo is back WHEN Lance Raymundo did Shakespeare’s most famous play Romeo and Juliet almost six years ago, it was a challenge and an adventure. The whole stage production (including the seemingly endless workshop, rehearsals and the theater discipline) was all new to him- but he played his role well. Being the courageous and passionate Romeo, he wowed the crowd not just with his acting but with his controversial little stunts as well- like nearly dropping his pants during the performance, although it was an accident- and his ‘jaw-dropping kisses. ‘ “It was a different experience,” Lance recalls. “It was tiring because I had no understudy back then, but it was fulfilling because I had a live audience, mostly students and it really developed me as a performer .” The singer admits he never thought he’d be given another chance to play his favorite role- but it happened. He received a call from Gantimpala Theater Foundation and next thing he knew, he was Romeo again. “I cannot believe I’m back on stage. It’s been almost six years when I played the character but I can still memorize everything. I dropped the script on day one,” says Lance Although he has a different Juliet this time (Monica Llamas), Lance said he has no problem with his new partner. Juliet was formerly played by Adriana Agcaoili. “Monica and I are friends. She’s very professional and dedicated to her craft. I enjoy working with people like her. I mean everyone in Gantimpala are very professional and passionate about acting that’s why I know I’m in good hands when I accepted the project .” William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet- considered by many as the greatest love story ever told- is Gantimpala Theater Foundation’s Pearl Anniversary offering. It revolves around the age-long fight and pride-hardened hatred between the two of Verona’s most distinguished households – the Capulets and the Montagues – and the romance that blossomed between their children. According to its artistic director Tony Espejo, the play has all the elements that the audience will surely appreciate because there is drama, family feud, romance, a lot of kissing scenes and fencing sequences. Other characters are Pamela Hundana (Lady Montague), Jeffrey Camañag (Lord Montague), Roeder Camañag (Mercutio), Rico del Rosario (Benvolio), Kimberly Diaz (Lady Capulet), Ces Aldaba (Lord Capulet), Miguel Vasquez (Tybalt), Bodjie Pascua(Friar Lawrence), Michiko Unso (Nurse), Arkin Da Silva(Prince Escalus), Raymond Talavera (Balthasar), Kristian Chua (Petruchio), John Paulo Garcia (Peter) and Francis Ong (Paris). Romeo and Juliet will run every weekend starting December to January at the AFP Theater and will have a special show on February 14 in Teatrino Greenhills. Romeo is back; so is Lance Raymundo By Isah V. Red Shakespeare’s most famous play Romeo and Juliet is back on stage. The last time theater buffs saw the classic tragicomedy was almost six years ago, in which singer Lance Raymundo played the character essayed on the big screen by a younger Leonardo DiCaprio. Now, the restaging of the Shakespearean play by the Gantimpala Theater Foundation for its Pearl Anniversary, brings Raymundo back on stage as well. Over lunch at Crowne Plaza’s Seven Corners, the younger brother of Rannie Raymundo told us how he got on board the play. “I left the scene not too long ago, mainly to finish my studies and learn the ropes of business,” he revealed. “My dad had always been wheedling me to get into the family business, so I gave in.” While going through the experience in the family owned enterprise, he became quite keen on the important aspects of running a business, he decided later to put up his own trading company. “I’m an importer of raw materials needed by local manufacturers of goods,” he said. “This is the kind of business that you can run even if you’re not in the office. That brought me back to my first love—music.” It will be remembered that Lance joined the musical bandwagon in the late ’90s at the peak of his brother’s career. He was launched as a balladeer in the Viva Records stable of artists with an album that did fairly well, but not quite a hit to assure him of some kind of tenure in the industry. “Now, as a freelance artist, I have the creative freedom to do what I’ve always wanted to do,” he declared. Which means, of course, that he is now able to sing the songs his heart has long ached for, and not the kind of melodies and rhythms a label would push down his vocal chords. Songwriter, singer, record producer His newfangled independence will be evident in an upcoming album, which he has completed recording in Rannie’s studio. “We’re pitching it to record companies for distribution. We’re talking to a couple of label managers who expressed interest in the kind of music that I am doing now,” he said. It’s not only the music that has undergone dramatic change in Lance’s repertoire. The look as well has had a major revamp. The singer now sports close-cropped hair and has slimmed down considerably, making him look 10 years younger. That’s perhaps the reason why Gantimpala Theater Foundation asked him to reprise the Romeo role he essayed six years ago. “I was really surprised,” the songwriter-singer-record producer—businessman-actor intimated to me while he was spooning a sinfully rich chocolate cake from the dessert corner of the restaurant. “I never expected they’d call me back to play the role.” Accepting the role doesn’t mean he is totally disengaging himself from the business he has put up. “It runs on autopilot. All I need is a PDA phone to get connected and get the updates on transactions made during the day, which shipments are coming in and delivery of orders. And I can do that while on a break from rehearsals. And since performances are at night, that doesn’t pose any problem to me in running the business.” The first time “It was a different experience,” Lance recalled. “It was tiring because I had no understudy back then, but it was fulfilling because I had a live audience, mostly students and it really developed me as a performer. “I’m back on stage! I cannot believe it. I mean, it’s been almost six years when I played the character but I can still memorize everything. I dropped the script on day one “ Although he has a different Juliet this time (Monica Llamas), Lance said he has no problem with his new partner. Juliet was played by Adriana Agcaoili then. ”Monica and I are friends. She’s very professional and dedicated to her craft. I enjoy working with people like her. I mean everyone in Gantimpala are very professional and passionate about acting that’s why I know I’m in good hands when I accepted the project.” Romeo and Juliet goes on stage on weekends this month until January at the AFP Theater (Camp Aguinaldo). On Valentine’s Day, it will move to Teatrino in the Greenhills Shopping Center for a special performance. While busy with rehearsals and performances, Lance also found time to shoot for a digital feature titled Telebisyon, which also stars Joseph Bitangcol, Darius Razon and Mayo Suzuki. Lance plays a brat who has got two opposite personalities. The movie, produced by Back Focus Production, is a collaboration between Hector Crisostomo and Donnie Sacueza. It will premiere on Dec. 21 at the Robinsons Galeria. http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=goodLife3_dec17_2007

Lance seeks to jumpstart career GUIL FRANCO (Correspondent) 26 December 2007 SINGER Lance Raymundo reprises the lead role in Shakespeare's most famous play, "Romeo and Juliet." With Tony Espejo as artistic director, the production runs every weekend from December to January at the AFP Theatre ... and will have a special show on February 14 at Teatrino Greenhills, both in Metro Manila. Lance admits he never thought he‚d be given another chance to play his favourite role -- but it happened. He received a call from Gantimpala Theatre Foundation and next thing he knew, he was Romeo again. "I cannot believe I'm back on stage. It's been almost six years when I played the character but I can still memorise everything. I dropped the script on day one," says Lance. Although he has a different Juliet this time (Monica Llamas), Lance said he has no problem with his new partner. Juliet was formerly played by Adriana Agcaoili. Why accept the foundation's pearl anniversary offering's role? His answer: "There are so many aspiring singers today. I have to compete! Taking this role offered everything an aspiring or a returning pop star in my shoes would want to jumpstart a career." Romeo and Juliet, which was originally penned for the high-school crowd wherein Lance last appeared, has been upgraded and stylised to reflect the modern times. As a songwriter, Lance has been able to wield his pen for the production -- composing two songs, one for the gathering scene and another for the death scene. It was exactly six years back when Lance, then sporting his uncanny post-80's curly rock hairdo, accidentally bagged the lead role. Director Jun Pablo, who was then scouting for a young and impressionable actor to play Romeo, spotted Lance and was convinced that he was the perfect man for the role. http://khaleejtimes.com/CityHome.asp?xfile=data/citytimes/2007/December/citytimes_December246.xml§ion=citytimes&col=

By: Pete Ampoloquio, Jr. PETE-TIK * * * LAUGH-TO-THE-MAX ang comebacking singer/actor na si Lance Raymundo sa kabaliwan ng ilang press people. “I was reading this tabloid one day and I was surprised with the item that was written about me,” aniya. “It says there that he saw me in one occasion and I looked like a taong grasa raw. Ha! Ha! Ha! I find that very amusing. In the first place, do I look like one? Ha! Ha! Ha!” Not at all! For Lance baby happens to be a man of unquestioned culture and erudition. Kung ang karamihan sa mga artista ngayon (the males specially) are former call boys and male prosties, Lance comes from a most decent family, and he finished college in one of the best universities in the metropolis. Kaya nga he was kind of shocked when he saw how provocative his otherwise sexy pictorial has turned out to be by the power of this thing called photo shop. “My mom saw it first and she was even teasing me about it,” he remembers with an amused grin, his dimples showing. “But I was wearing ordinary trunks during the photo shoot, but some people made it appear as if the material was kind of see-through and my thing supremely well-endowed. “I’m well-endowed, yes,” he adds replete with a naughty grin, “but not supremely. Ha! Ha! Ha!” People's Taliba http://www.journal.com.ph/index.php?issue=2007-12-29&sec=3&aid=43992

Aside from Monica Llamas who plays Juliet, kasama rin ni Lance sina Bodjie Pascua, Roeder Camanag, Kimberly Diaz, Ces Aldaba, Miguel Vasquez and Francis Ong. By: Pete Ampoloquio, Jr. Pete-tik KAKAIBANG INTENSITY NI LANCE
High school pa lang kami, very familiar na kami sa istorya ng Romeo and Juliet. So much so that when it was made into a film sometime in1968 by the multi-awarded Italian director Franco Zeffirelli, I urged my mom to accompany me in seeing it since going to the movies then scared me like hell. Anyway, Olivia Hussey’s Juliet and Leonard Whiting’s Romeo were totally remarkable and indubitably unforgettable. But after watching GANTIMPALA Theater Foundation’s own version, I was convinced that Tony Espejo’s stage play is closer to the Zeffirelli masterpiece, maybe not so much in production values but when you speak of the casts’ acting, particularly that of Lance Raymundo and his leading lady Monica Llamas. Sa totoo lang, I cried all the way up to the very end because of Lance’s and Monica’s heart-rending performances. Even the crowd at AFP Theater were surprisingly silent whileLance delivered his soulful monologue, replete with tears and a voice that reeked with forlon misery. Monica was more subdued but intense nonetheless. Meron pa palang last performance ang grupo on the 14th of February sa Teatrino Greenhills. Do watch. It’s fabulously directed and hauntingly acted. A brand new Lance Raymundo
Walden Sadiri
Celebrities who reinvent themselves have longer staying power. Madonna, the Queen of Reinvention herself is one perfect example. In the local music scene, singers like actors also feel the need to look brand new all time. They are aware that their adoring public are fickle-minded and could easily switch their loyalty to a much younger, interesting performer. Recording artist Lance Raymundo has undergone several physical makeovers. When he was starting, he sported the look of a pretty boy. Then he went into several transformations from rocker to model to a hunk with ripped muscles and all. As his looks changed, his musical influences did, too. From pop and ballads, he shifted to rock. So what’s Lance’s latest look? Lance feels comfortable with his military haircut. Lance discovered that he too can act when he starred as Romeo in Gantimpala Theater Foundation’s rendition of Shakespeare’s "Romeo and Juliet" last year. "Noon kasi lahat ng ginagawa ko is always for fun. Now I’m very serious about acting," he shared. He credits his manager, the late Angie Magbanua for encouraging him to try his hand in acting. "Lahat ng natutunan ngayon ko na lang na-incorporate. She honed me for this long. If it’s not your time, it’s not your time. Pero everything is falling in place now. To the last minute she was there to guide me and make my dreams come true because she decided to watch my show on the 19th and she died on the 18th of January," he recalled. -incorporate. She honed me for this long. If it’s not your time, it’s not your time. Pero everything is falling in place now. To the last minute she was there to guide me and make my dreams come true because she decided to watch my show on the 19th and she died on the 18th of January," he recalled. In one of his performances, Lance felt that Angie was watching him. "Call it my imagination but the emotions that came from me that time was a mixture of acting and real emotions. And afterwards I got these inquiries for TV and movie roles. Kung baga yung dating panaginip lang lahat pumasok in one day of life," he said. On Feb. 14, Lance will again reprise the role of Romeo Mantague in the restaging of "Romeo and Juliet" at the Teatrino at the Promenade, Greenhills, San Juan. Lance said "Romeo and Juliet" may be a Shakespeare classic but even the young audience would appreciate it. Would Lance show his behind again during the bed scene of Romeo and Juliet? "Not anymore," he replied laughing. "I guess before kasi it’s my first acting role and medyo iba pa kasi hindi pa uso yung mga cellphone cameras and stuff and it is more innocent and small things like that have a certain drawing power because of curiousity. And now that I feel that I’m more with substance na as an actor sana our drawing power is more of our capabilities as artist compared to yung just the visuals or ganun. And I think it is more fulfilling now na we’re still able to pack our venues and we’ve received good reviews." Lance is also scheduled to release his much-awaited album "Take Me Home" this month or in March. "‘Take Me Home’ means a lot of things. It is my favorite song in the album although every song is special. But this is my personal favorite. Imagine if you see the album on the stands of a music store, it urges you to take it home di ba? Parang take me home I’m Lance Raymundo’s new album or take home my music. It’s like a message to the people to check me out," he explained. Under his brother Rannie Raymundo’s label Brat Tarcks, "Take Me Home" includes songs he has written over the years like "Suspicious Lovers," "The Feeling Is So Fine" and "Give It To Me" which was inspired by "Romeo and Juliet."

MovieGoer Lance turns to acting Nestor Cuartero AFTER DOING Romeo & Juliet over a dozen more times on its new Gantimpala Theater Foundation season, Lance Raymundo says he’s ready for TV and movie acting. Lance used to see himself as more of a singer than an actor, but his continuous portrayal of Romeo in the Shakespearean classic must have inspired him to branch out to acting next. The singer-songwriter, in fact, has already finished a digital film, ‘Tele-bisyo’, with Joseph Bitangcol and Darius Razon, where he did a supporting role. ‘People tell me I suit character roles, which I believe are a challenge to any actor,’ he told us during a breakfast meeting last week. Lance is sporting a new, military, cropped-hair look as part of his continual makeover. ‘It was an accident, but I chose to live with it eventually. I was doing a magazine shoot when the stylist made a mistake. Instead of losing my top, I decided to use it na lang as my new look,’ he said. The new look has given Lance a fresh new image that people now find more interesting. It has given him a naughty edge, which he likes, as his new album will have a carrier called ‘Take Me Home.’ He hopes to release the album, which he himself produced under Brat Tracks, in March. Lance isn’t singing in any Valentine show this season. On Feb. 14, he’ll play it romantic in an intimate staging of ‘Romeo & Juliet’ at the Teatrino in Greenhills. http://www.tempo.com.ph/news.php?aid=36552

MovieGoer Nestor Cuartero BY THE WAY… • Lance Raymundo is jumpstarting his acting career by way of a role in an Asian TV series to air in Singapore. The singer-actor just got confirmation the other day that he’s been cast in a production called ‘Incredible Tales,’ a horror-suspense series. Filming will be done in the Philippines and will commence shortly. The ‘international’ role came in the middle of planning sessions directed at Lance’s eventual outbreak into local movies. A movie producer is eyeing Lance for a major role in the film, currently in pre-production. http://www.tempo.com.ph/news.php?aid=36815

Juliana Palermo ‘nabuntis’ ni Lance Raymundo
By: Butch Roldan
He played Romeo at super-impressive talaga ang pagkakaganap niya. That is why naging by-word na nga ang name na Lance sa daigdig ng teatro ngayon, particularly kapag napag-uusapan ang Pinoy version ng classic play ni William Shakespear na Romeo and Juliet. Now, isa pang breakthrough ang nagawa ni Lance nang makuha siyang lead actor sa sikat na Singa-porean folklore television se-ries titled Incredible Tales sa Manananggal episode na kinunan sa Los Baños, Laguna last week. Naging co-stars niya rito sina Juliana Palermo at Say Alonzo. By: Pete Ampoloquio, Jr. Pete-tik LANCE CONQUERS SINGAPORE
Don’t look now, but Lance Raymundo appears to have conquered Singapore teeve. “It’s their 5th season,” intimates Lance who’s now looking a lot better with the added poundage that he’s been able to get after Romeo & Juliet. “And it’s all about folklore, legends and local colors. “And since it has become super successful, they decided to go global.” At dahil sa nagustuhan ng Singaporeans ang ‘Pinas, they came to our country to shoot an episode here based on our folklore. In effect, nagkaroon sila ng audition ng local talents and Direk Jun Lana was commissioned to direct the episode titled Manananggal. “Tapos na ang audition when my manager Charlotte Dianco learned about it,” elucidates Lance. “Nevertheless, she sent an e-mail to the production about profile, along with some photos. “Within a week, they called up Charlotte and told her that they would want to see me. “So, I went for PR purposes. ‘Di nga ako nakapag-ayos and I was only casually dressed. “Tapos, my pinabasa silang line sa akin. “Nagulat ako,” he adds in earnest. “Lead role ang ibinigay sa akin. “Filipino born and raised in America ang role ko who has a girlfriend played by Juliana Palermo and we went to the Philippines to have a vacation in my lola’s resort.” “Sa stage walang take 2. Sa rehearsal pa lang namin sa Incredible Tales, ibinigay ko na lahat, kaya nag-roll agad ang camera. “Lahat ng scenes ko, take 1. Kahit `yung Singaporean producer, pumapalakpak after ng scenes namin. “I’m so proud that I was able to give my best kahit wala akong experience sa TV acting.”

People's Tonight http://www.journal.com.ph/index.php?issue=2008-03-03&sec=3&aid=51334

Cellphone na ninakaw, pinatutubos
By: Gerry Ocampo |
Lance behaved with current girlfriend
By: Remy Umerez A Little Bit NOW you see him, now you don’t. We are referring to Rannie Raymundo’s only brother Lance. The last time we saw him, he was promoting an album under Viva Records. He talked openly about his lovelife with an adventurous model who is a foreigner. He was sporting curly hair then. Today, we see a head-shaven Lance with a new manager in town in the person of Charlotte Dianco who is a lot younger than Lance’s former manager, the late Angie Magbanua, but also on the heavy side. Both arrived on time at Italianni’s at Morato. What did not arrive on time was the pasta we ordered prompting our friend and editor Ronald Carballo to ask, “May problema ba?” In fairness, the food was worth waiting for. It is still the best in town and they serve it in huge servings. Lance, who just closed a deal over his cellphone, craved for a cake with a drop of liquour which simply tasted heavenly. Lance started by saying how good he feels that before Angie breathed her last, they were able to communicate. “Some people made a big fuss when I did not renew my managerial contract with Angie. She has told a different story kaya nagkaroon siya ng tampo sa akin. She also kept her sickness a big secret kaya it was a big shock when we learned that she passed away. She was a very cheerful woman with a sunny disposition who taught us what professionalism is. My brother and I will always remember her that way,” he said. Is it true that director Elwood Perez is interested in casting him in a major role for an indie project? “At the wake of Angie, direk Elwood approached me and said he has this story about a tragic boy named Fidel which they want to film. He told me that I fit the character and would I care to audition? I told him that I don’t mind trying out and sure, I am very much interested. But you know, these are all in the planning stage. Nothing is final yet and I haven’t gotten in touch with Elwood since the wake.” The acting bug hit Lance after appearing in a Singaporean teleserye, “Incredible Tales” where he appeared in an episode about vampires. On local stage, Lance appeared in Romeo and Juliet where some writers found his portrayal of Shakespeare’s most popular character both intense and absorbing. It was so successful it had a repeat at the Teatrino early this year. “Actually, I did Romeo and Juliet six years ago kaya familiar ako sa lines. At that time, I had a butt exposure in my love scene with Juliet. I don’t mind appearing in the raw,.” he states. What about his singing career? “Singing will always be a passion for me at saka hindi naman mahirap pagsamahin ang dalawang bagay.” The Raymundos are into importation of paper products and the younger Raymundo is getting the hang of it. Certain business deals require Lance to travel abroad but mostly negotiations are closed through calls. Lance’s lovelife is never zero. He is currently dating a girl, a non-showbiz one (a fashion student) who comes from a conservative family. Gone are his carefree ways, he adds. “I am at my best behavior with my current love.” People's Journal http://www.journal.com.ph/index.php?issue=2008-03-13&sec=3&aid=52495
