Kuh and Pops back on stage-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- KUH Ledesma has done very well in pairing up with the so-called “divas” of local music. Her team-up with Zsa Zsa Padilla in “Diva 2 Diva” is now one of the longest-running concert series to date, wowing audiences all over the world more than two years after it opened a the PICC. Last Valentine’s Day, it was Concert Queen Pops Fernandez’s turn to share the limelight with Kuh in "Let’s Talk About Love" at the Captain’s Bar of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. From their opening song to the last, Kuh and Pops consistently showed why they are among the best female performers in the business. The two divas treated audiences to some of the best and most romantic songs like their renditions of "Love Moves," a beautifully-arranged duet of "Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo" and "Paano," a Barry Manilow medley ("Ready to Take a Chance Again" and "If I Should Love Again") and a Burt Bacharach medley ("Make It Easy on Yourself," "Wives and Lovers" and "Promises, Promises"). The audience particularly loved Pops’ performance of hits by the ‘80s group Swing Out Sister, including "Breakout" and "Waiting Game" and her "CCC Medley" featuring hits of three composers whose last names begin with the letter "C" George Canseco ("Ikaw"), Ryan Cayabyab ("Kailangan Kita") and Willy Cruz ("Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas"). Kuh, meanwhile, drew a standing ovation when she brought audiences back to the ‘80s with the early romantic hits of her career in "I Think I’m in Love" and "One More Try." Another revelation during the show was the presence of Kuh and Pop’s special guest, McDonald’s Philippines president George Yang. Yes, believe it or not, this high-powered businessman proved he could hold his own against the Pop Diva and the Concert Queen as he joined them onstage in several special numbers. With Pops, George performed a stirring duet of that old favorite, "Someone to Watch Over Me" plus two solo numbers ("Granada" and "Cinema Paradiso") before joining Kuh in "The Prayer," a song originally popularized by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. The concert was so enjoyable that after the last song, the audience was left begging for more – and not just an encore, but more shows. It seems that Kuh and Pops thoroughly enjoyed themselves as well, since they have decided to give in to requests to re-stage "Let’s Talk About Love" tonight and on March 4 and 10 at the Captain’s Bar of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. For inquiries, call the Mandarin Oriental Hotel (750-8888), Music Museum, (721-6726), Ticketworld (891-9999) or Headline Concepts (551-7253 to 55). http://www.malaya.com.ph/feb25/ente2.htm

Kuh Ledesma teams up with Bobby Soul for the 1st time It’s the first time that pop diva Kuh Ledesma is teaming up with The Platters’ survivor Bobby Soul and she’s very excited about it, expressing optimism their show will be a super success, considering the Filipinos’ love for music of the 50s, 60s, and the 70s. She said she’s really looking forward to their show. "I’m sure a lot of people would want to see our show," Kuh, a self-confessed Platters fan, said. "The Platters had so many hits and certainly fellow Filipinos would love to hear these songs from one of the original members, Bobby Soul." This concert is Kuh’s way of helping keep The Platters’ music alive for future generations, Kuh added. Aptly titled " Music of The Platters and More," the show will be staged on March 25 and April 1 at the Captain’s Bar of the Mandarin Oriental Manila where Kuh and Pops Fernandez held their very successful back-to-back Valentine concert, " Let’s Talk About Love," so well-loved it was re-staged four times. During the show, audiences can look forward to romantic renditions of some of The Platters’ greatest hits like " Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and " Only You." The latter song is enjoying resurgence in popularity after exPinoy Big Brother (PBB) Sam Milby recorded a pop-rock version that was used in the Koreanovela of the same title. Among the numerous hit songs of The Platters include " Remember When," "Ebb Tide," "P.S. I Love You," "Who’s Sorry Now," "With This Ring," "I’ll See You in My Dreams," "Sweet Sweet Lovin’" and " Sincerely." Bobby Soul, who now goes by the title " Bobby Soul of the Magic Touch," started singing when he was just six years old "and I’ll go on singing till I drop," he said with fervor in a recent interview at Good Earth Restaurant at Kuh and Precy Florentino’s Republic of Malate. He recalls he used to sing in the streets of Broadway until he became a gospel singer. He became one of The Platters in 1950, when he was 15 years old. Bobby Soul has been based in Toronto, Canada ever since he went solo but he now wants to stay permanently in the Philippines with his Filipino wife Hermelinda and their 10-year-old daughter Tamika. Bobby has been coming back and forth to the country for various performances, a few times with Asia’s Queen of Songs, Ms. Pilita Corrales. At the moment, the Souls reside in Lemery, Batangas. "I’d love to permanently stay here in the Philippines," Bobby said. "One of these days, I would like to do charity work for the street children. I would also like to record an album here." Aside from being one of the original members of the world-famous The Platters, Bobby also made almost a hundred films, something not so well known among his Filipino fans. Among the Hollywood films he appeared in include "Bogus," "Extreme Measure" with Hugh Grant; "Mistrial" and " Women in Prison" where he played a prison guard. His show with Kuh Ledesma is a rare treat that Bobby Soul is looking forward to with great enthusiasm. He has a special place in his heart for Filipinos, and a great respect for the talent of Kuh, whom he acknowledges as one of the country’s greatest performers. Tickets to " Music of The Platters and More" are now available at the Music Museum and Mandarin Oriental Manila. http://www.mb.com.ph/ENTR2006031558710.html

Are you proud to be a Filipino? In the light of what’s happening in our country today, we believe that there is one crucial moment when we inevitably take a moment to look deeper into our hearts, face our fears squarely and analyse our self-worth, because we are Filipinos. What really makes the true Filipino? What ideology should we stand for to keep us closest to the reality of our identity? Who among us could still proudly say that we still take pride of our Filipino heritage while in the midst of the worst political condition, poverty, economic instability, irreconcilable convictions, worst calamities, etc. Introspection is inevitable. Here below are nuggets of wisdom from some of our biggest celebrities who have responded to our forum, "are you proud to be a Filipino? Why, and how?" Some answers made us take a harder look at our condition, some made us even shed a tear of frustration, but overall, the forum satisfied a deeper longing of the soul to take pride in being a Filipino. Hope is there because there is a just God who is in control of our very situation. Read on: "In spite of how the Filipino is deemed by many nowadays, yes, I am proud to be a Filipino. I am not proud of how some of my countrymen have been conducting themselves, especially some in government. But I love my country and have faith in the Filipino’s strengths, abilities, resilience, and faith in the Almighty. Kahit saan sa mundo, magaling tayo. We are basically a caring people. Our smiles and warmth are genuine. And we are smart and talented. Kulang sa bansa natin nga lang opportunities, kaya madaming magaling sa atin ang umaalis. Sayang. We should get down on our knees and pray." — Sharon Cuneta "Yes, I’m proud and confused. I’m proud simply because we still have a world boxing champion like Manny Pacquiao. I’m proud we are the only third world country to have a great huge number of shopping malls. Strange though. By the way, we are third world, two steps more and we are No. 1, first and champion. Ha ha ha! I’m proud because Filipinos are so flexible. We can make any profession turn into a Nurse. Even doctors become nurses. Sad though. Lastly, about 70 percent of us 80 million Filipinos seem to know how to run this country. But I am still confused. Apparently, nobody is qualified." — Cesar Montano "I am definitely proud to be a Filipino. Many view our passion and zeal in a bad light but these traits are in fact our greatest assets. They contribute to our race’s resiliency that got us through the colonization of three superpowers, and the various trials we continue to face. Without a doubt, I am sure the Philippines will emerge triumphant in our goals." — Sen. Bong Revilla, Jr. "I am extremely proud to be Filipino! I have always been. Why? Because never in my lifetime I have ever met a people that strive on surviving. People who know more about politics than the politicians. People who can turn garbage or memories of a calamity into a commodity. People who can sing, dance, act, model, punch, knock out, win, lose, win again, paint, sculpt, write, design, build, tear down, and build again. No one does it, takes it, fixes it, tolerates it like the Filipino. I am proud to be but ever prouder to be amongst Filipinos. Throw it our way, I dare you, we will survive. We will prevail. We will be the envy of the world if I had my way!" — Martin Nievera "Of course I am proud to be a Filipino because of the few I’ve had the honor to encounter who at all times strive to make their country a little better, their fellows a little happier. It shames me that the supposedly best and brightest in power, as exemplified by the incumbent president that I voted for ceaselessly strive to elevate self and kin to the ranks of the fabulously rich and unabashedly corrupt. I am ashamed of having as a countryman the prayerful widow who deigns to ask the President to make the supreme sacrifice by stepping down, while she can’t even begin to relinquish an hacienda to its rightful owners. I’m ashamed of the unrepentant gangster who in his arrogance and power-drunkenness had the gall to blatantly blow our taxes and loans on mistresses and high living. I’m ashamed even as I still harbor hopes for my country. I know there are good ones out there." — Director Lore Reyes "I am very proud to be a Filipino. Ours is a blessed race with rare talents and gifted with intelligence. We are hardworking and we are great survivors of very testing times. We are resilient. I take pride in beautiful places our country has and our incomparable hospitality." — Kuh Ledesma"Our country has gone through a lot all throughout history but we are still here, standing proud. We are a very loving nation even if we don’t see eye to eye on some issues. Despite the problems, we all still manage to enjoy life and we know that we can get over all the trials. I am very proud to be a Filipino! No matter what happens, the Philippines will always be home for me. I know that God will bless our nation and redeem us." — Franco Laurel "YES! And I will always be proud to be a Filipino. However, I am so ashamed of those people whose life’s ambition is to make the government fail, ruin the country, topple the president, and grab power in the guise of prayers and democracy. They do not deserve to be called citizens of the Republic." — John Lesaca "I sincerely want to, but I don’t know how and why." — Arnel Ignacio "Yes, I’m still proud because we always survive. I think that is something to be truly proud of." — Regine Velasquez "Yes, I’m proud to be Filipino. Because even the strongest blows that hit us, still they can’t stop or put us down. We’re very resilient." — Diether Ocampo "When I remember the stories of Lapu-Lapu, Dagohoy, Diego and Gabriela Silang, Gomburza, Rizal, Ninoy Aquino, yes I am proud to be a Filipino. When my daughters (ages 4 and 1) and I, put our lives at stake on Edsa 20 years ago, yes I am proud to be a Filipino. It’s the only country where I am a first-class citizen. Now, after joining Edsa 2 and being governed by Mrs. Arroyo and all her sipsips, I’m having second thoughts. Should I still be proud of being a Filipino having helped install an administration that has become even worse than Marcos? But listening to Susan Roces, Guingona, Binay, Escudero, Cayetano, JV Ejercito, Joel Villanueva, Randy David, Satur Ocampo, and other so-called left-leaning-pro people representatives, I believe again in what Ninoy said, "the Filipino is worth dying for." I am once again proud to be Filipino, one of the many children of the true living God who is destined to serve Him here in Asia; the country where He planted the seed of Christianity 400 ago. Ang tagal lang nating magising sa ating tunay na tungkulin sa kanya." — Director Boots Plata "Yes, I can say with candor that I am a Filipino and to deny and defy that because the country is in the midst of trials can be considered a monumental fiasco." — Evangeline Pascual "To be honest, I am no longer sure if I could be proud of being a Filipino. As a part-time expat, the two People Power gave me pride and the whole world saluted us! But the events that took place recently somehow erased that feeling. Why can’t our leaders live up to the promise of Edsa? How come personal ambitions are more important than the lives of the downtrodden Filipinos? Cry The Beloved Country!" — Director Gil Portes "Yes, I am very proud to be a Filipino. In fact, I surrendered my green card because I want to be a Filipino forever. We’re very adaptable race. Kahit saan ilagay, magsu-survive. Hindi katulad ng mga ibang nasyon magrereklamo kaagad kapag hindi convenient. Pero tayo hindi. Para tayong bubble gum, kahit saan dalhin, dumidikit." — Ricky Reyes "Yes, I’m proud to be a Filipino. I realize that because I enjoy the privilege of seeing other countries, nations. And I have ssen that there is a lot to be proud about being Filipino: Our color, our resilience, our language, our ability to adapt. If we can only stop putting ourselves down." — Ivan Mayrina "Oo naman. Pinoy ako. From birth, til I die. We might be a third world country but there are 7,000 plus reasons to be proud of. Where else do you see a democratic country that exercises its rights everyday with the politics goin on her and all the protests. We exemplify freedom. It is a great reason to be proud or our country. Our history flows in our blood. In our hearts, makikita ang pagmamahal sa bayan natin. Jeremy Marquez for President!" — Jeremy Marquez "After heading the Philippine delegation to the World Championship of the Performing Arts Competition where the Philippines bagged a total of 16 awards including the world champion award with only two contestants besting 51 countries, I cannot but be proud to be a Filipino. I have always believed in the Filipino talent and will continue to find avenues that would catapult the Filipino artist to his rightful place in the world." — Ida Henares "I am proud to be a Filipino which is why I chose to live in Manila even if most of my husband’s family members are in the USA. There are many struggling Pinoys and I want to be able to contribute in anyway by inspiring them through songs we produce or concerts that reach out to lost souls. As I heard the laments of the ‘Wowowee’ victims in Medical City and the victims and orphans of the Leyte landslide, I felt my Filipino blood surging because they were such simple loving, poor people with few needs, who only want to be cared for. There is much to be done in this country and I want to be one of the catalysts who could be part of bringing out the best in my fellow Filipinos. Truly it is the poor provincial Filipinos that make me proud because through their poverty and simplicity, they still manage to smile, work industriously and thank God and have faith that the best is yet to come for us. Before the resurrection, crucifixion, I am proud to be Filipino because we have wonderful countrymen whose gifts and talents are just waiting to be harnessed through responsible and honest leadership of our supposed ‘public servants’." — Angeli Pangilinan-Valenciano "Yes, I am. Because there are no other people in the world who struggle so bravely to provide for their families. Overcoming trials and difficulties no matter how hard they are." — Melanie Marquez "I’m proud being a Filipino. I’m proud of my heritage. We are the most creative people in the world. We adapt easily and do you guys ever notice all Filipinos know how to sing? Sing along with me folks. Pinoy Ako! Wohooo!" — Asia Agcaoili http://www.mb.com.ph/ENTR2006031658826.html

Friday, March 17, 2006 Kuh sings with Soul By Terrie B. Fucanan Kuh Ledesma doesn’t seem to run out of ideas for her shows. She thrives in her so-called thinking exercise, she says; for it is the only way an artist can truly prove his worth. “I like working,” says the pop diva, who will celebrate her 27th year in the music business in September. Kuh says there are no secrets as to how she has managed to do countless recordings and more than 400 concerts throughout her career. Only hard work, she asserts, as well as “maintaining the creative exercise of working to improve your craft and reinvent yourself, is the only way artists can carry on these days.” A new product of her creative exercise will unfold on March 25 and April 1, when—after a successful Valentine show with the concert queen Pops Fernandez—Kuh resumes her weekend gigs at the Captain’s Bar of the Mandarin Oriental Manila. On this two-night performance, Kuh will sing foreign standards and nostalgic hits for a change. Her singing partner will be Bobby Soul, former member of the legendary fifties’ group, The Platters. Titled “Music of the Platters and More,” the show is Kuh and Bobby’s tribute to one of America’s most successful black vocal groups. “I haven’t done anything like this before—team up with a foreign artist and sing melancholic hits,” she said. “And the songs of The Platters are the best choice because most Pinoys are familiar with them. This is our way of helping keep their music alive for future generations.” In the show, guests can expect Kuh and Bobby to dish out some of The Platters’ greatest hits, including “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “Only You” and “Unchained Melody”—Bobby’s personal favorites. They will also render timeless tunes such as Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable,” “A Long and Lasting Love,” “Beauty and the Beast” and more. The idea of teaming up with Bobby Soul came when Kuh heard that the 68-year-old artist frequents the Philippines for shows. “I heard he has a lot of bookings here and abroad!” she exclaims. “So I thought, why not team up with him?” Bobby, who is now a Canadian citizen, has paid numerous visits to the country since the seventies. He married a Filipina in 1994 and has a 10-year-old daughter with her, named Tamika. The actor-crooner, who has grown fond of eating pancit, adobo and fried tilapia, started out as a gospel singer and became an understudy for The Platters when he was a teenager. “They got me ’coz I can do all the voices,” he brags in a soft-spoken manner. “I’ve been singing since I was six, and I will never give it up for as long as I can still carry a tune.” Bobby blames his slow memory for failing to learn a Pilipino song, but he said he is still open to the challenge. Kuh pokes him on his side and says: “We can sing ‘Dahil sa ’Yo.’ It’s easy; I’ll teach you,” then she starts humming a tune. Bobby shakes his head. “I love that song. But it will take me three months to learn that.” He points at his head and smiles, “This brain here is a bit rusty now. Let’s stick to the old favorites for the meantime.” http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2006/m...060317lif1.html

SHOWBIZ DRIBBLE By Salve V. Asis The Freeman 03/19/2006 * * * It's hard to believe Kuh Ledesma has been in the music scene for 27 years! That's right, the diva will celebrate almost three decades in showbiz in September. What keeps her going? "I like working," she declared. Hard work, Kuh said, keeps the juices flowing, gives her the drive to "improve your craft." If you want to know how Kuh has evolved as a musical artist, catch her on March 25 and April 1 at the Captain's Bar of the Mandarin Oriental in Manila. She will be performing with Bobby Soul, a former member of the Platters, a group that harmonized their way up the music charts in the '50s. Kuh and Bobby will team up on such Platters hits as "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Only You" and "Unchained Melody." Bobby by the way is married to a Filipina and they have a 10-year-old daughter. http://www.philstar.com/philstar/Freeman200603192401.htm

Kuh does The Platters proud A LITTLE BIT Remy Umerez People's JournalWHENEVER Kuh Ledesma performs, you can be sure the venue is not only SRO but there will be repeats afterwards. Such was what happened to her back-to-back concert with Pops Fernandez. On March 25 and April 1, Kuh returns to the Captain's Bar of the Mandarin Oriental hotel for another evening of love melodies with former Platters man Bobby Soul. It is aptly titled Music Of The Platters And More. Admittedly, Kuh is a huge fan of Platters music. "No Valentine show is ever complete kung hindi maririnig ang mga awitin ng The Platters. Songs like Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Ebb Tide, Only You and many more. I want to keep their music alive for future generations to appreciate and fall in love with and this is the reason why I conceptualized this concert," says Kuh. At 60-something, Bobby Soul continues to tour around the world. He has his own band and is being identified as "Bobby Soul of the Magic Touch." He had performed with Pilita Corrales in 1994 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. He was the main attraction when Teatrino opened early this year at Promenade, Greenhills. Asked to name the singers who helped shape his music career, Bobby mentioned three: Barry Manilow, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. The late Nat King Cole was said to have told Bobby that he would go far as a singer. He enjoys performing in the country more than in other parts of the world mainly because "The audience here is great, responsive and very appreciative. They don't talk when the artist starts his act. They listen. They have great respect for the talent." Bobby is married to a Filipina he met abroad 14 years ago. The couple is based in Canada. How does he feel working with Kuh for the first time? "I feel nervous and thrilled. She is a big star, very beautiful and loaded with talent. I feel so honored sharing the stage with her." For tickets to Music Of The Platters And More, call Music Museum at 7216726 or the Mandarin Oriental at 7508888. http://www.journal.com.ph/news.asp?pid=2&s...ay=19&year=2006

What Kuh Ledesma would love to do aside from singing There are three things pop diva Kuh Ledesma would love most to do aside from singing: To write a book, to change the land-scape of our cities, and to do a talk show a la-Oprah. "I’d really like to do something other than singing," she said. But in the meantime, singing is what she’s meant to do. And tonight Kuh and Bobby Soul of the famous The Platters, return to Captain’s Bar of Mandarin Oriental Manila. The two great performers first teamed up onstage at the same venue last March 25. Kuh has teamed up with many fellow top artists of the land, among them Pops Fernandez, Zsa Zsa Padilla, and Regine Velasquez, and this time she said why not with an international artist like Bobby Soul? And Kuh didn’t regret choosing him: Their first show at the Captain’s Bar was a big hit. Like in their first show, Kuh and Bobby will be doing a lot of duets too tonight. And of course, Bobby will once again regal his fans with much-loved Platters songs "Only You," "Sweet, Sweet Lovin’," "Sincerely," "Remember When," "Ebb Tide," "As Time Goes By," "Moon River," "Uforgettable," "Endless Love," "Can’t Help Falling in Love," "Unchained Melody" and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." The famous group made a lot of hit songs and surely Filipinos would love to hear them from the only surviving Platters member. Kuh might even bring their show to the US, she said. By the way, Kuh is slated to go on a 25-city tour of the US this June and July. When she comes it would time to prepare for her big concert at the Araneta Coliseum in September. Kuh will also find time to finish two albums, one with gospel songs (to feature her favorite songs abd compositions of Cecile Azarcon, award-winning US-based songwriter) and the other, a collection of well-loved OPMs entitled " Bayan Kong Mahal. In the meantime, go see and hear her and Bobby Soul perform in "Music of the Platters and More," tonight at 9 at the Captain’s Bar of Mandarin Oriental Manila. http://www.mb.com.ph/ENTR2006040160289.html
