Tinanong ni Zsa Zsa Padilla si director Joel Lamangan kung isosoli ang trophy na napanalunan ng Regal sa Metro Manila Film Festival?

Nakiusap daw ang singer-actress na 'wag isoli ang best actress trophy niya dahil ngayon lang uli siya nanalo ng award.

Before Ako Ang Legal Wife, ang last best actress trophy niya ay 1998 pa para sa Batang PX ng Star Cinema.

Ang laki raw ng tuwa ni Zsa Zsa sa nalamang kung magsosoli man ng trophy, baka 'yung mga napanalunan lang ng Blue Moon.

Pero, sa presscon last Saturday, nabanggit ni Mother Lily Monteverde na as per the advise of Regal's legal counsel, base sa kontrata sa MMFF, kailangan nilang i-honor at i-uphold ang decision ng awards committee. Tuwang-tuwa si Zsa Zsa sa pagkakapanalo't madaragdagan daw ang trophy niya na ihihilera sa trophies ni Dolphy.

Zsa Zsa Padilla was still in Cloud 9 when we got to talk to her just a few hours after winning the Best Actress award at the Metro Manila Film Festival for the movie "Ako Legal Wife" where she played the role of Chona Chong, the wife of Elton Chong (portrayed by actor Jay Manalo). She was seated beside comedy king Dolphy who escorted her onstage to accept her award, her first for a comedy role. It was her third Best Actress trophy, having won two awards for "Batang PX" some seven or eight years ago. She won at the Star and Gawad Urian for the said film.

How do you feel about your victory as Best Actress for "Ako Legal Wife?"

"I am really very happy since this is my first award for a comedy role," Zsa Zsa begins. "My role in 'Batang PX' was more of a combination of drama and comedy, but here in 'Ako Legal Wife,' it's really all out comedy, pure comedy. It's been my secret dream to win an acting award for a comedy role. I'm so glad it finally came true."

But the singer-actress didn't expect she'd win even if a lot of her friends had been telling her she had a chance. And even if the entertainment press predicted and named her a favorite to bag the coveted Best Actress award, Zsa Zsa still wouldn't dare believe she could be it.

"I know the role is good because I've read the script. I liked the script written by Roy Iglesias but even then I didn't want to hope too much. It's hard to be disappointed. Not until your name is called can you only be sure it's going to be you," says the beauteous lead star of "Ako Legal Wife."

She almost lost the role because of a problem during the casting. But Regal Films producer Lily Monteverde assured her that the role was hers. After all, she was the one who uttered the line "Ako Legal Wife" in the award-winning film "Mano Po 2." For that she will always be grateful to the Regal Films matriarch.

"But I am really happy to have won for a comedy role. After 22 years in the business, a win like this could really boost my career. Parang it's hard to imagine myself doing a comedy role and making people laugh. I'm really so happy. I didn't know I could pull it off. But I couldn't have done this without the help of direk Joel and my co-stars," says Zsa Zsa.

Her experience in doing "Ako Legal Wife" affirmed Zsa Zsa's belief that it's harder to make people laugh than to make them cry. When she attended the movie's premiere, she suddenly felt nervous and afraid.

"What if the people don't laugh? Of course, when we're doing the film, we were all laughing on the set. Same thing when we were dubbing our lines. But I was so nervous during the premiere that I held Dolphy's hand and told him how I felt. But he himself was laughing at the movie and told me I did a good job," she shares.

What's the difference winning for "Ako Legal Wife" this time compared to your victory in "Batang PX?"

"This is so important to me because I got the praise of no less than the comedy king.

Si Dolphy ang sabi sa akin, bihira akong mapatawa pero natawa ako sa movie mo. When you hear such comment, it really feels great," she reveals. "Wow! It's been my secret dream to win an award for comedy. I have a different image as diva that's why it feels good to be appreciated in doing comedy," she says.

For sure, Zsa Zsa will also be in the running for Best Actress when the awards season starts a few months from now.

AT the thanksgiving party of Mother Lily for the success of Regal's entries in the recent filmfest, Zsa Zsa donated P10,000 to be raffled off to the guests. Was she serious when she declared in her acceptance speech that "Ako legal winner," considering that some winners were being questioned? "No, that was just a joke," she laughs. "Biniro ko rin nga si Mother na kung magsosoli siya ng awards niya, ako, hindi."

A pleasant thing happened to her last Christmas. Her daughter, Karylle, came to visit her at her home with Dolphy in Marina along Roxas Blvd. "Kasama niya si Dingdong (Dantes, her boyfriend). So, that means hindi na siya binabawalan ng father niya na dalawin ako roon."

Karylle and Dolphy were very cordial to each other. "They're not really close like 'yung ibang anak ni Dolphy na very close sa akin, like Vandolph. But that's understandable kasi bihira naman silang magkita." After her best actress award for "Ako Legal Wife," she is hoping to do more movies this year.

"And after doing a comedy, sana drama naman ang offer sa akin next time. May promise sa akin si Mother Lily na I'm doing one more movie for her, so sana matuloy."

"There are no conditions, it’s just a matter of proper timing. Actually, yung mga parents namin ang hindrance," the Divine Diva said jokingly when asked about the anticipated wedding.

She continued, "I think waiting for the perfect time comes when it didn’t happen when it should have happened. Right now, I want to marry for the right reasons and not because people around us are pressuring us into it." The delay, Zsa Zsa added, had nothing to do with her health problems. "I will just know when it’s the right time to go on with it."

It will be recalled that Zsa Zsa spiraled into depression when her wedding was postponed. "I felt like I was at the crossroads of my life then. People were telling me not to complain anymore but it was just that time when worrying got the better of me. I worried about everything. It’s a good thing I channeled my angst through workout, which has been in my system ever since."

Although Zsa Zsa guaranteed that there will be a wedding in due time, she rejected the idea of having more kids. "Kids? Why? Dolphy has how many kids nga again? Seriously, I have no plans. No more kids for me because it’s a big responsibility and I grew up in a family of six and I know what it’s like to be in a big family; yung kulang kayo sa ulam at naglalakad ako sa palengke habang umuulan. I’m happy that I’m blessed enough to know that all my three kids are really bright."

When the media pressed Zsa Zsa how she would feel if daughter Karylle asks for her wedding blessings ahead of her mother, the MMFF best actress was dumbfounded. "Oh... I don’t know what to say. Matagal pa naman siguro ‘yon because you know what, people today are more concerned with their careers now, unlike noong panahon namin. My daughter is a very intelligent girl, gusto ko munang makapagpundar siya for herself so she won’t have to depend on any man. I always want my children to be independent and she is. I’m so proud of her that my dream is really to be called ‘Karylle’s mom’ rather than her being called ‘Zsa Zsa’s daughter. In fact she’s getting there. She’s busier than I am that we don’t have time to do a show together."

The seasoned singer–actress said there never was competition between her and her daughter because "I can’t understand the concept of being in competition with your own kid. I think there’s more possibility of having a sense of competition with Dolphy pa, or with anybody’s partner, for that matter."

However, she refused to take the titled of ‘Comedy Queen’ even if she took a step closer to it after winning best actress for the hilarious "Ako Legal Wife." "Years of being with Dolphy may have caused some of his humor to rub on me but I don’t have the credibility to be called the ‘queen of comedy.’ I’d really rather be the ‘queen of his heart.’ Pero as a ‘comedy queen,’ marami pa kong kakaining bigas!"

Right now, Zsa Zsa volunteered that she is contented with her love life. "It’s one of the reasons why it’s so comfortable for Gary [Valenciano] and I to do a sequel of ‘Faces of Love’; Both Gary and I have grown up in the industry together and we’re both happy and contented with our life partners."

Zsa Zsa currently relishes the fact that "this is a good time for the music industry; there’s a market for everyone and OPM is getting its much-deserved attention."

Sa mga naglabasang write-up tungkol sa young lovers, it was obvious na boto ang pamilya ng dalawa sa relasyon. In fact Dingdong even has to take up singing lessons para makapag-duet kay Karylle sa latest album nito, ang "You Make Me Sing", sa awiting "Hiling " na si Karylle din ang nag-composed. Pero, nang dumating ang usapan sa kasal, sinabi ng napaka-gandang ina na "Matagal pa bago mag-asawa si Karylle. Alam niya ang hirap ng buhay ngayon at isa pa, matagal bago mag-asawa ang mga kabataan ngayon.

"Pero, kung ako ang tatanungin, gusto kong makapagpundar muna siya para sa sarili niya, iba na yung independent siya at di dumedepende sa lalaki.

"Okay na naman siya kung tutuusin, nakatapos na siya ng pag-aaral at may maganda namang trabaho pero, at 24 di pa namin napag-uusapan ang tungkol sa kasal. I’m sure kung nasa isip na niya ito ay sasabihin niya sa akin," paniniguro ng magandang ina.

Zsazsa admits na hindi naging madali ang kabataan niya, kaya at 16 ay nagtanan siya at nag-asawa.

"Anim kaming magkakapatid, pinag-uusapan namin na di kami mag-aanak ng marami, dahil mahirap ang buhay nun. Ako nga, naglalakad lang papuntang palengke nun. Ang mga isinusuot namin, mga hand-me-downs. Kaya nung magka-trabaho ako, fascinated ako sa magagandang damit dahil sa pinagdaanan ko.

"Ako ang lumabas na may pinaka-maraming anak. Kaya siguro ibinubuhos ko sa mga anak ko ang mga kasaganaan ngayon. Ayaw kong danasin nila yung mga dinanas ko.

"Sina Nicole at Thia, bawal ma-expose. Maaapektuhan sila kapag nalaman sa school na mga anak sila nina Dolphy at Zsazsa

"But, I don’t mind being called the mother of Karylle. At kahit di ko expected na magso-showbiz siya, very proud ako sa nangyayari sa career niya."

After Valentine na, February 18 and 19 to be exact ang concert nina Gary Valenciano and Zsa Zsa Padilla called Faces of Love to be held in NBC Tent. Feeling kasi ni Gary, hindi na nila kailangang makipagsabayan sa napakaraming Valentine show before and on February 14.

Very successful kasi ang unang Faces of Love concert nila last year at malakas ang clamor para magsama uli sila sa concert like what they did nga last year.

A totally new show according to Gary pero maraming na-retain na part ng kanilang Faces of Love 1. Like ‘yung poster na ginamit last year, almost the same. Kahit ang mga costumes and songs na kasama sa repertoire, in a way ay may mga na-retain sabi ni Mr. Pure Energy.

Actually, tama lang talaga na after Valentine na mag-concert sila Gary. Kasi nga talagang ang daming naka-line up na Valentine show at nakakalito na namang manood kasi sabay-sabay. At least nga naman on Feb. 18 and 19, hindi na gaanong ma-traffic at tapos na ang sabay-sabay na show.

Speechless for a while si Zsa Zsa Padilla nang tanungin ng isang reporter kung possibleng mauna pa sa kanyang magpakasal ang anak na si Karylle. May tsika kasing, diumano’y, napag-uusapan na nina Dingdong Dantes at Karylle ang pagpapakasal. Dingdong was even quoted as saying na si Karylle ang babaeng gusto niyang pakasalan at maka-sama for the rest of his life.

"Feeling ko, matagal pa bago sila magpakasal," sabi ni Zsa Zsa nang mahimasmasan sa tanong. "Karylle is only 24 years old and they’re more concentrated sa kanilang career. Gusto ko‘y makapagpundar muna si Karylle for herself para hindi siya magde-depend sa asawa niya."

Zsa Zsa was 16 years old noong nagtanan sila ng father in Karylle at nagpapasalamat siyang hindi ‘yon nangyari sa anak. "I was not open kasi sa mommy ko noon kaya nagtanan ako," ani Zsa Zsa. "Karylle is open to me and I’m lucky to have a marvelous daughter like her."

Asked kung handa na siyang maging lola, "Lola na ako sa mga anak at pamangkin ni Dolphy na may mga pamilya na. It doesn’t bother me. It doesn’t affect me also if some people call me, ‘nanay ni Karylle.’ Okey lang. Walang competition sa aming mag-ina."

Speechless again for a while ang Divine Diva nang sabihin ng reporter na mas maganda siya kay Karylle.

Zsa Zsa Padilla, lumagapak sa stage ng Philippine Plaza!

Sumabit ang sapatos ni Zsa Zsa Padilla sa gown nitong suot sa dealer’s night ng Nescafé upang maging dahilan ng pagkakadulas nito at bumagsak sa sahig ng stage ng Philippine Plaza last Friday night.

Agad namang bumangon si Zsa Zsa at ginawang comedy ang pagkakabagsak niya, huh!

"Ganyan ang maganda kapag associated ka sa Comedy King! Ha! Ha! Ha!" ani Zsa Zsa sa audience na pumalakpak sa presence of mind niya.

Hindi naman naging sagabal ang insidenteng ‘yon upang hindi mabigyan ng magandang performance ni Zsa Zsa ang mga taong galing pa sa iba’t ibang panig ng bansa.

Kahit na nga inabot nang alas-12 ang mini-concert na ‘yon ay masayang-masaya ang tao sa songs na ipinarinig niya.

Siyanga pala, mapapanood sa Faces of Love 2 si Zsa Zsa kasama si Gary Valenciano sa Feb. 17 and 18 sa NBC Tent sa Taguig City.
