Symphony of the Heart: A Review

Symphony of the Heart" was a dream concert that came true for Gary Valenciano last Friday at the Big Dome when he performed with The San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra and Mr. Ryan "The Maestro" Cayabyab. But it was more than a realization of a long time dream. It was a night that validated Gary Valenciano as the country’s foremost pop icon, Mr. Energy himself and even as concert king as he was accorded two standing ovations — one after his finale song "How Did You Know" and his encore, his rendition of Josh Groban’s "The Prayer" with no less than Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez!


As Gary mentioned in the course of his show, to mount something like "Symphony of the Heart," everything has to be perfect.

"This is a dream come true for me...to make a dream come true it should be perfect. This is no less than perfect with the Maestro, the SMPO, the Powerplay Band and my long time musical director Mon Faustino," he shared before he rendered his popular hit songs in "experimental arrangements" that sound like groove music with its slow and uptempo beats. These were "Di Bale Na Lang," " Heto Na Naman" and "Shout For Joy."

Thus, the ovations he received proved that "Symphony of the Heart" went beyond perfect. He has, from the Araneta crowd’s approval, turned it to the symphony of the heart of each and everyone which was actually his goal at the beginning of the concert.

To set the mood right for "Symphony of the Heart" Gary V started the night with "Kailangan Kita." The effect was immediate as most couples from this writer’s vision could reach were sitting closer together, even the men putting their arms around their women’s shoulder.

Actually "Symphony of the Heart" felt like a Valentine’s show more than anything else except probably for Gabriel Valenciano’s full throttle dance segment with his dad. Then there was Gary’s duet with his other son Paolo Valenciano of the alternative band Salamin with a repertoire of alternative rock like Bamboo’s hit song "Pinoy Ako" to mention a few.

What also made the "Symphony of the Heart" different was that the whole concert contained Original Pilipino Music. It was only during his encore that he prepared selected popular foreign songs such as "The Prayer" and "I’ll Be Here."

One of the more interesting aspects of the show was Gary Valenciano’s tribute to The Maestro’s hit songs from yesteryears. He started with his first project with Ryan Cayabyab, the melancholic "Once Upon A Life" which was one of Gary V’s popular ballads in the ’80s.

Then he brought in Sheryn Regis for a duet of more Ryan Cayabyab compositions that were popularized by Basil Valdez like "K a h i t I k a w Ay Panaginip Lang," "Iduyan Mo" and "Tuwing Umuulan At Kapiling Ka."

Another Ryan Cayabyab he included in his repertoire that night was Geneva Cruz’ "Kailan" with the group Smokey Mountain. According to Gary the first time he heard "Kailan" over the radio, he immediately liked it. Gary also pulled a song from The Maestro’s "One Voice" and injected his infectious Gary V energy to the song and making Araneta dance with him.

As Mr. C’s gratitude for Gary’s tribute, he described him during the concert as " isang tao lang ang kilala kong ganyan na talented...inggit na inggit ako sa kanya. He can do anything on stage. Lumilipad siya!"

For the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra’s segment, they went beyond classical pieces when they put class in various novelty songs when they played them. They were "Bikining Itim" and songs from Hagibis and Masculados.

Gary Valenciano also had a duet with Erik Santos who sang with him "Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos." Gary also performed on the grand piano "Sana Maulit Muli."

One of the night’s highlights too was his tribute to Universal Records’ Bella Tan who according to him has encouraged him all throughout his career to keep writing songs. And one of his latest was dedicated to her. This was "Break Me" whose music video was directed by Bella Tan’s son Jeffrey.

To probably fulfill his dreams of performing with an orchestra, Mr. C placed him in charge of the SMPO. He conducted his composition "Victory" the country’s theme song for the South East Asian Games!

"I composed ‘Victory’ for the 1990 SEA Games...this year again they will use it...this time around it will not just be a song for athletes but for all of us believing as one in what is right," he said.

Gary also hoped that the composition though without lyrics would boost, uplift and inspire his audience that night. To cut the story short, his performance was truly electrifying that everyone was charged clamoring for more Gary V performances!

In a nutshell, "Symphony of the Heart" was everything Gary Valenciano dreamed of and more. It also signified that Mr. Pure Energy is as energetic and even more creative than when he started his career. Though he was vocal about his admiration for the young singers of today, these youngsters could really learn more than a thing or two from the country’s finest performer — Gary V!

NAPANOOD namin ang Symphony of the Heart concert ni Gary Valenciano sa Araneta Coliseum last Friday.

Honestly, we were impressed by his peformance pati na rin ng kanyang mga guest tulad nina Sheryn Regis, Erik Santos na hindi talaga nagpatalbog kay Gary V., at ang dalawang anak niyang sina Paolo at Gabriel na tinitilian din ng audience.

Mixed ang audience ng crowd. May mga bagets kaming nakita pero marami ring matatanda na. Ang iba nga, eh, naka-wheel chair pa na nagpunta sa Araneta just to watch Gary's concert.

Hindi namin alam kung naging very emotional lang kami that evening, pero madalas kaming ma-touched at mapaiyak sa mga kinakanta ni Gary V. Ang sarap-sarap pakinggan ng kanyang mga repertoire kasama ang San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra lalo na 'yung medley of inspirational song niya.

Gusto namin ang new song niya na Ikaw Lamang na themesong ng pelikulang Dubai nina Aga Muhlach at Claudine Barretto. Pero siyempre, may mga signature song si Gary na ginawan ng special arrangement para sa San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra like How Did You Know, Once Upon A Life, Letting Go at kung anu-ano pa.

Fantistic din ang version at rendition ni Gary V ng kantang Kailan na ni-likha ng kanyang musical director and conductor na si Ryan Cayabyab. Ang ganda pala pag piano lang ang accompaniment ng naturang song., huh!

It's really an unforgettable night for us. We really enjoy every minute of the concert.

The concert was great and the san miguel philharmonic orchestra was good. The only thing that put us off was the 30 min delay! I thought that this one will be different from all the rest of the usual run... that it will start on time.... NYET!

TODAY! Gary Valenciano left the other day for Bangkok (Thailand) for a commitment tonight over there, as a special guest in the launch of a new Thai magazine.

He will be singing with the Royal Thai Navy Orchestra for the launching of Prestige, at the Grand Ballroom of the Thai Oriental Hotel.

Of course, traveling with Gary is his manager-nurse-wife Angeli.

For his concert last Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum titled “Symphony of the Heart,” Gary Valenciano had for special guests his two sons Paolo and Gabriel. Paolo did a song number while Gabriel did a dance routine with his dad.

We had an interview with Gabriel at the Manila Genesis office the other day so we asked him if he ever gets nervous dancing with his dad?

“Yes, for a few minutes before I go onstage. I’d really get the jitters especially because Araneta Coliseum is such a big venue. But once I’m onstage, I could go on and on. I really love performing. Plus, I am dancing with my dad. We already know what we are going to do when we’re onstage. He gives me the signals on what we are going to do next kaya I don’t feel so nervous na,” said the 17-year-old teenager who’s very much like his dad in many ways.

Gabriel is very vocal in saying he wants to follow in his dad’s footsteps. He joined the new dance show Club TV on ABC- 5 where he gets to strut his stuff as a dancer and gets a chance to host as well.

“I want to perform. I want to make people happy. I want to do it not just for the money or the fame or the spotlight. I just want to be like him.”

Taking good care of Gary V

Gary V left for Bangkok recently with the Royal Navy Orchestra for the Search of Prestige, a new Thai magazine. It was held at the Grand Ballroom of the Thailand Orient Hotel known to be the best hotel there. Of course, traveling with Gary is wife-manager , Angeli Pangilinan. She's always on guard now especially after what happened to Gary during his trip to the US where he was nearly comatose due to his diabetis.

But Gary's faith to the Lord, and his wife's prayers, will always take care of him.

Successful concert

Mr. Pure Energy Gary Valenciano had a very successful concert Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum that had a special guest appearance of Asia’s songbird Regine Velasquez who brought the house down. Also most applauded where Gary’s numbers with his guests Erik Santos, Sheryn Regis and his two sons, Paolo and Gabriel Valenciano.

It was star-studded night as some of the biggest stars from ABS-CBN were on hand to witness “Symphony of the Heart” that had Gary singing with the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra for the first time. It was also his first time to work with Maestro Ryan Cayabyab. The bigwigs of ABS-CBN, headed by Charo Santos, Cory Vidanes, Deo Endrinal, watched the concert. It also saw the attendance of ABS-CBN stars like Piolo Pascual, Vhong Navarro, Toni Gonzaga, Nikki Gil, Kuh Ledesma, plus former ABS-CBN star Drew Arellano, among others.

Gary left last Sept. 5, for Bangkok to be the main performer for the launch of a new magazine called Prestige held Sept. 7. He performed with the Royal Navy Orchestra at the Oriental Hotel (one of the best hotels in Bangkok). More than 400 hundred VIP guests had been invited to the affair. Time Magazine photographer Russell Wong who also recommended Donita Rose to be Time cover was responsible for Gary’s appearance in the said affair. He was also the one who recommended Gary V and Donita to do a show for Unicef two years ago.

Last August 29, MTV Philippines also presented him with the first MTV Generations Award, a lifetime achievement award in recognition of his career that has spanned decades and broken boundaries, and for his music which continues to inspire generations of artists and music fans both here and abroad.

Gary V speaks to kids for Nickelodeon’s 2015 campaign


The kids have stood up and spoken about what they would like their world to be in the year 2015. And when they do, leaders, celebrities and role models don’t only stop and listen. They join in. One of them is Gary Valenciano!


‘Gary V’ has been known for the songs that have inspired many. Now he brings his stirring voice to another level and attempts to touch Filipino hearts once again by speaking directly to kids and voicing over for Nickelodeon’s Public Service Announcements (PSA). Dubbed in both English and Filipino, the PSAs focus on Poverty, Education, Equality, Disease, Environment, Child Mortality and other issues addressed by Nick2015—a campaign launched to raise awareness among children to make the world a better place by the year 2015.

As a UN Ambassador of Goodwill himself, "Mr. Pure Energy" gladly joined hands with the United Nations (UN), Nickelodeon, the rest of the world leaders and celebrities in promoting awareness of said issues. "People who live in the poorest countries are more likely to fall ill. Many kids don’t make it to their fifth birthday. They die because of poverty, lack of medicine or even healthy food. But everyone is equal and should have the same opportunities and rights," says Gary V. "That’s why the world are joining together to make it a better place to live for everybody." Like Gary V, celebrities like Michael Douglas, Lenny Kravitz, Youssou N’Dour and Dr Eli Wiesel will also lend their voices to support a global media initiative called "Only With Your Voice".

In 2002, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan launched a Millennium project where 189 heads of state around the globe promised that they would make the world a better place for all kids and their families by the year 2015. In support, NICK 2015 will broadcast a series of 8 x 30-second original animation shorts on 23 Nickelodeon channels across Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

With NICK 2015, Gary V encourages kids to pledge their support via www.nick2015.com_ where their petitions are to be presented to the world’s leaders at the UN General Assembly in September 2005.

Despite not having advertising budget for the Nov, 11 concert, the people behind Gary Valenciano are still working on Pechanga Casino to give them some significant marketing dollars. Gary V. is the only Pinoy act they have approved in Pechanga and so he should be able to stand on his own. The producers can certainly use the boost to make the case to bring Gary V to other mainstream markets across the US.

At the Gawad Parangal 2005 in Sacramento, California last July 24, star power was all over the place. From Los Angeles, showbiz kibitzers Oliver Carnay and Bong Prada Lim (Editors Award) joined Noel Rominque (producer and publisher of Philippine and other Asian Headlines), Carlo Muñoz, Valerie Baber with Paolo Montalban (Entertainer of the Year), Lucita Soriano (Celebrity Award), and former actress Vilma Valera. Everyone had a good time doing the traditional showbiz game that smart people play.

IINTERBYUHIN si Gary Valenciano nang live bukas sa 700 Club sa Virginia Beach at kakantahin niya rin ang song niyang Break Me sa nasabing programa sa Amerika. Mapapanood naman dito ang interview ni Gary sa Miyerkules, Oktubre 5, sa Channel 7 ng Sky Cable-Trinity Broadcasting, alas-11:30 ng umaga.

Ang interview ng total performer ay ipi-feature din sa www.cbnmusic.com. Muling magkikita si Gary at ang host ng programa na si Gordon Robertson na ang tawag kay Gary ay "my favorite singer".

Nasa US si Gary ngayon kaugnay ng first leg ng kanyang US Tour 2005. Katatapos lang niyang mag-concert sa Houston, Texas at Chicago.

Ang sked ng next shows niya ay sa Oct. 7 sa Paso, Texas sa Abraham Chavez Center; Oct. 9 sa McAllen, Texas sa McAllen Convention Center. Babalik siya ng Manila at two weeks na mamalagi upang alamin ang naiwang anak na mga lalaki, sina Paolo at Gabriel.

Ang second leg ng US Tour ni Gary ay sisimulan sa Seattle, Washington sa Oct. 28 at sa Meany Hall ito gaganapin. Sa Oct. 30 ay nasa Cache Creek siya at sa Cache Creek Events Center ang venue ng show niya.

Then, sa Nov. 4 ay sa Tampa, Florida ang lipad niya para mag-concert sa Sundome, Tampa. Kasunod nito ang concert niya sa Taj Majal sa Atlantic City sa Nov. 5 at special guest niya rito si Zsa Zsa Padilla.

Sa Nov. 11 ay sa Pechanga siya at ang last stop niya ay sa Orpheum Theater sa Los Angeles sa Nov. 12.

Kasama ni Gary sa biyahe ang asawa niyang si Angeli at anak na si Kiana.
