Enriching experience with Gary V
WHEN Gary Valenciano electrifies the Music Museum on May 22, 23, 29 and 30 with "His Love," the first in a series of performances to mark his 25th year in the business, it’s going to be more than the euphoric, mind-blowing experience everyone expects of every "Gary V" gig. It’s also going to be more than a restaging of Mr. Pure Energy’s successful Valentine concert in Cebu. Gary’s "His Love" concert will also be a thanksgiving celebration for his 25 successful years in the industry. This year, Gary also marks the 30th year he’s successfully managed and beaten all odds to become the poster child for juvenile diabetics everywhere."His doctor in the States calls him a living miracle," says wife and Genesis president Angeli Pangilinan Valenciano. Often, juvenile diabetics are given five years before their eye sight shows signs of deterioration. Gary has defied those odds – resoundingly. "Given his condition while touring and performing, Gary doesn’t even have glaucoma," Angeli adds. Glaucoma is the excessive fluid pressure within the eyeball that can occur as a complication of diabetes. Throughout the years, there have been close calls. In 2005, Gary fell unconscious during a concert tour in the USA. But the ministrations of Angeli and his road manager of 16 years, Vina Pareja, as well as his continuing discipline and unshakable faith in the Lord have brought Gary back – sound and humbled – to continue his missions to inspire people through his music and live performances. So Gary’s kick off anniversary concert at the Music Museum is especially significant for him. With guests, sons Paolo and Gabriel Valenciano, his band Powerplay together with his musical director Mon Faustino, Gary is set to create another indelible experience with songs of his recently launched silver anniversary CD, "Rebirth." An interpretation of some of Gary’s favorites and most meaningful songs, "Rebirth" includes well-loved hits like "Only Hope"; a remake of "Natutulog ba ang Diyos"; and his perennial show-stopping arrangement of the classic "Lean on Me." He’s also performing the exhilarating interpretation of son, Gabriel’s arrangement of "Shout for Joy." Expected to excite the crowd is a special Beatles medley with Paolo. Gary was recently honored with the MYX Magna Award, a lifetime achievement trophy, for his music and "for touching people’s lives through his art." At the recent awards night at the Meralco Theater, some of Gary’s hits were interpreted by artists like Regine Velasquez, Jaya, Janno Gibbs, Ogie Alcasid, Vina Morales, Jet Pangan, Kyla, Ebe Dancel of Sugarfree, Aia de Leon of Imago, and Paolo and Gabriel Valenciano with The Manoeuvres. A tearful Gary, who was unaware he was going to be honored, said: "I feel so blessed and happy with all the people around me, the people behind my success, with all my friends from showbiz who came here. When they sang my songs, it was very touching. I am really just so happy to be receiving this award." Tickets to Gary’s "His Love" concert at the Music Museum are available at Genesis (721-4405 loc. 201), Music Museum (721-6726 or 721-0635) and at all Ticketworld outlets (891-9999 or visit www.tickeworld. com.ph). Gary V-Martin ‘face-off’ concert soon
Kaye Villagomez
It will take one major concert before their legions of fans could finally figure out if there’s ever a professional rivalry between Gary Valenciano and Martin Nievera. The bad news is that it’s not going to happen this year. "Hopefully, that concert happens next year because this year both Marin and mine’s schedules are full already," Gary announced during the media conference for his new Music Museum concert series "His Love" on May 22, 23, 29, and 30. Gary made the announcement himself when the entertainment press informed him that Martin has been revealing bits and pieces of their plan to have a major concert together. "I’m glad that he talks about our plans because that means he is as excited as I am about that but we have a lot of ideas for that show. You can just imagine how Martin and I can do everything in a two-hour show. Maybe we need to make it four [hours]; but for a teaser, Martin will be guesting in my show on June 13 at Stockton, California and maybe we can talk about the back to back concert we’ve been planning while on that trip," explained Gary. When the concert happens, Gary cleared there would not be any problems as far as Gary-Martin billing is concerned. "That has never been a problem for me; it’s never an issue." In the meantime, Gary reflected on the past 25 years he has spent in the business and the chance to give thanks to the Lord via "His Love," a show he promised to be more fun, upbeat yet rightfully recognizing how God made things possible for Mr. Pure Energy. Co-themed with Gary ’s latest CD "Rebirth," "His Love," he noted, will still be about hope, dreams, and gratitude. "It’s about giving rebirth to dreams thought to be burried and ambitions thought useless," he said at Gerry’s Grill in Q.C. Tuesday afternoon. Asked at what points in a montage of Gary’s 25 years would slow motions move inside his head should he reminisce about the pivotal moments of his career, he said, "It’s hard to enumerate all the highlights of my 25 years in the business but I think all the major concerts will be there like "Major Impact," "Radical" and all those other shows which images I always replay in my mind. Writing ‘Sana Maulit Muli’ with my wife Angeli would be there. Then there’s winning "Album of the Year" from AWIT." Gary looked back: "There’s that part when I was starting in showbiz because as may have remembered Angeli was already pregnant before we got married and it was a crucial decision for me to go on with show business at the time. So before I had a press conference for a concert that time, I decided to tell people about Angeli being pregnant and that I’m the father." He then asked for sign, "I thought if the concert becomes a success after I’ve told people about the state of my personal life during that time, then I’m meant to do this [performing and music]." "His Love" will serve as a jumpstart to Gary ’s silver anniversary year. "I will still have a major anniversary concert later this year in November at the Araneta Coliseum," he informed the media. Guesting in "His Love" are Gary ’s two talented sons Gabriel and Paolo Valenciano with the possibility of performing with daughter Keana and even wife Angeli. At the press conference, he was also asked if Angeli would perform with Gary for the first time. To this, the music icon replied, "Well, now that you’re suggesting it, Angeli and I would have to talk about that." After "His Love," Gary will leave for the second leg of his US tour happening on the following dates: June 7 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, June 13 at the Stockton Arena in Stockton, California, and June 15 at the Comcast Arena in Everette, Seattle, Washington. Aside from Martin Nievera, Gary will also have Mico Aytona and Jason and Joshua Zamora of the Maneuvers as guests. http://www.mb.com.ph/issues/2008/05/15/ENTR20080515124610.html

There’s pressure as my dad has set the standard of being a total performer. – Gabriel Valenciano’ Gary, a tough act to follow
WE were at the old Tavern on the Square in Makati when Gary Valenciano had his first concert in 1983. Now, he’s celebrating his 25th year in showbiz with "His Love," a concert series at the Music Museum on May 22, 23, 29 and 30. What are the highlights of those 25 years? "A lot!" he says. "Winning the TOYM Award, being nominated as best actor when I’m a singer, winning the Awit album of the year award for ‘Shout for Joy,’ which is the first of its kind in being inspirational. Each major concert of mine is a highlight as I keep replaying the images of what I did in them in my mind. Early in my career, Angeli got pregnant and the news spread just before my first concert at the Araneta Coliseum in 1984. In its presscon, I told the people helping my career that I will admit that Angeli is pregnant and I’m the father. If the concert failed, then it’s an indication that I would exit from showbiz. But the concert proved to be a hit and knowing that the people supported me is definitely a big highlight in my career." Now, his firstborn, Paolo, is already 24 years old and will be participating in his concert along with younger brother Gabriel. We ask his two sons if being the sons of Gary V. proved to be difficult for them as he’s one tough act to follow. "The answer is yes and no," says Gab. "There’s pressure as my dad has set the standard of being a total performer. But it’s not that difficult as it may seem as I’ve accepted that I cannot have all his talents. I can sing and dance like him, but I don’t feel I have to line up to be the next Gary V. I want to do other things, like I want to put up a school for musicians, I want to be a teacher and to produce music. Right now, I’m teaching dance in our studio at Doña Hemady Street." "When I was younger, I felt the pressure," admits Paolo. "As a kid, I would even be teased as the son of Gary V. and somehow nakakasira ‘yun ng ego. When I was 18 or 19, I realized that I didn’t get my dad’s height or his build. Napunta lahat kay Gab. But I’m proud of my dad and my brother and as I grew older, how you feel depends on your security with the Lord. Right now, I’m very secure with the Lord and his plans for me." Gary says he’s very proud of his sons being a part of "His Love" concert, which is also his way of thanking the Lord for all the blessings he got in the past 25 years. He’s also thankful that for 30 years now, he’s had diabetes and is still going strong. His doctor calls him a living miracle. Gary will be singing songs from his new album, "Rebirth." Tickets for "His Love" range from P500 to P2,500. You may get them from Genesis as 721-4405 local 201, Music Museum at 721-6726 and Ticketworld at 891-9999. After this concert, Gary goes to the US to do shows at Nokia Theater in L.A. on June 7, Stockton Arena on June 13, and Comcast Arena in Seattle on June 15, with Martin Nievera as his special guest. http://www.malaya.com.ph/may20/ente_2.htm "A lot!" he says. Right now, I’m teaching dance in our studio at Doña Hemady Street." WE were at the old Tavern on the Square in Makati when Gary Valenciano had his first concert in 1983. Now, he’s celebrating his 25th year in showbiz with “His Love,” a concert series at the Music Museum on May 22, 23, 29 and 30. What are the highlights of those 25 years? “A lot!” he says. “Winning the TOYM Award, being nominated as best actor when I’m a singer, winning the Awit album of the year award for ‘Shout for Joy’ which is the first of its kind in being inspirational. Gary V. celebrates 25 years with gratitude and optimism By Nickie Wang Contributor There’s a lot more to Gary Valenciano than just music as he celebrates his 25th anniversary in showbiz. It is going to be a year-long celebration of thanksgiving beginning with a concert entitled His Love at the Music Museum on May 22, 23 and 29. “I am ending my remarkable 25 years and beginning another 25. I am moving to another chapter with His resounding Love,” Gary muses in optimism that he would still continue inspiring people with his artistry and good deeds. Gary ’s His Love concert will be a celebration of fun and relevance, and humble prayer of thanksgiving for a milestone that exceeds the 25 years he’s stayed on top of his game. Incidentally, this year also marks the 30th year he’s successfully managed and beaten all odds to become the poster child for juvenile diabetics everywhere. “His doctor in the States calls him a living miracle,” says wife and Genesis president Angeli Pangilinan-Valenciano. Given the exhausting and demanding nature of his tours and performances, Gary has defied odds of being a diabetic patient even after years of close calls. Often, juvenile diabetics are given five years before their eyesight shows signs of deterioration. Rebirth Fittingly, Mr. Pure Energy released his new album entitled Rebirth. It is a 15-track compilation album that consists his covers of meaningful songs like Mandy Moore’s “Only Hope,” a Michael English song originally recorded by Lea Salonga called “Mary Did You Know,” and his version of the classic “Lean on Me” and “Stand by Me” as well as some of the most emotional songs including “He Won’t Let Go,” and “When I Hear You Call.” “I call it Rebirth because it’s time to renew ourselves. With all the things happening around us and with all the crises in our country, Filipinos have been feeling down, they need, we need something to lift our spirits,” Gary states. Inspired by the public who continuously admires and looks up to him, Rebirth is his personal prayer of gratitude that aims to touch everyone’s life. It is his relevant gift not just to the music aficionados but for the people as well who thrive and regard music as a significant part of their lives. In the album, Gary writes in the liner notes: “Rebirth is not about trends but rather it hopes to cater to the rhythms and beats, harmonies and melodies played out in real life, filtered by emotions nestled in the human heart.” Gary’s legacy continues The inclusion of his children in the concert is always a much-anticipated act. In his concert at the Music Museum, he will be joined by his two sons Gabriel and Paolo. He will perform the bracing interpretation of Gab’s arrangement of “Shout for Joy,” and Beatles medley with Paolo. “People want to see my children performing with me. I enjoy it as much as they do. They are starting to do something else; they are creating their own names in music. I want to perform with them while they still have time,” Gary says as a proud father of his two equally talented boys. Paolo, who had tough times getting away from the shadow of his father and being compared to younger brother Gab, being expected to venture in pop music, found his niche in rock music with his band Salamin. He is the lead vocalist of the band. “I was very affected and insecure. I am Gary V.’s son but it is kinda peculiar not being able to sing. But now, there’s no pressure at all. I am secure with the Lord and His plans. It just makes me proud being a Valenciano so I strive for excellence in everything I do, I can’t do something mediocre,” Paolo reveals during the press conference of his father’s concert. Gabriel who’s regularly seen in Asap resembles his father in so many ways: his being lean and tall, his passion for the beat and his flair on the dance floor. Gab is a dancer, actor, choreographer, percussionist and a music producer. “Humility. I keep my feet on the ground. That is one of the things I have learned from my dad, from my parents. He also thought me to be hard working and how to be a perfectionist in a world of imperfection,” explains Gab when asked about the things he learned from his superstar father. Turning point Gary ’s success with a career that spans 25 remarkable years did not come to the singer easy. In fact, he had to hurdle challenges in all the turning points of his career before he finally attained stardom. In 1984, before his first major concert, he shocked everyone with an admission in his private life that would later decide the fate of his career as a performer and an artist. “Before the public I had to admit that Angeli is pregnant and I am the father,” Gary remembers. His honesty and his willingness to perform and touch other people’s lives through his music and works made his name an indelible mark not just as a singer, an actor, or a performer but an institution in the industry that command respect and admiration. Growing old with style There are artists who have faded and there are musicians who are in the verge of losing their luster. But amid the number of growing young audience, Gary is still able to make himself and his works appealing to them. “I can’t be a total performer forever. I may lose the energy but not the ideas. I get ideas from the younger generation. I ask my children and get their opinion to the type of materials I am going to release. That’s why I am optimistic for the next 25 years of my career,” he states in his pure energetic style. http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=goodLife3_may20_2008

IT’S confirmed! Gary Valenciano will appear in 700 Club USA nationwide on June 3 before he starts his US concert tour. But before he leaves for the US, Gary V. will treat his fans to a musical treat via his concert series titled “His Love” which goes onstage beginning May 22 at the Music Museum. Other concert dates are May 23, 29 and 30, at the Music Museum. Joining him as guests in his concert are his two sons Paolo and Gabriel Valenciano. Gary is taking the opportunity to work with his sons. He dismisses the notion that once you get him for a concert, you also need to get his sons. “Not necessarily. I’m just taking the opportunity that I can still get them to be the special guests in my concert. Kasi soon, they will not be joining me anymore because they have their own careers. Gabriel might be going to the States to study. Paolo has his own band (Salamin),” says Gary. “Although I enjoy performing with them onstage, I don’t want Paolo to be continuously adjusting to me. I want him to create his own music. I don’t want to be a hindrance to their dreams. When Paolo finally decided to sing rock music, it’s up to him and I support him on that,” explains Gary.
Kini tungod kay the last time nga nag-concert ang singer didto, mura matud pa kini og nagmisa.
