“Uy, si Makisig, ang hirap nang abutin,” biro namin kay Makisig Morales, 10 years old and now popularly known as the bida ng katatapos na fantaseryeng Super Inggo.

“Hindi ho,” ang mabilis niyang sagot. “Madali pa rin ho akong abutin, dahil iisang inch pa lang ho ang itinangkad ko mula nang huling magkita tayo.”

Nasubaybayan namin ang landas na tinahak niya bago naturingang Little Big Star. Produkto si Makisig ng Little Big Star Season 1. It was his dad who taught him how to sing.

He didn’t expect to win, although ang pagiging finalist niya was enough to excite him and his family.

As everyone knows, Makisig didn’t win the title but in his own way, he became a superstar in his own right.

He has several endorsements to his name: Purefoods Beefies Hotdog and Lucky Me Pansit Canton. He has another one coming with a toothpaste brand na ayaw pa niyang tukuyin.

By the way, while LBS was a search for child singers, Little Big Superstar is a search for the next complete entertainer: A young talent who can sing, act, dance and host.

Now that "Super Inggo" has ended, title-roler Makisig Morales says he misses doing it very much. But he’s glad to be now co-hosting "Little Big Superstar" with Sarah Geronimo and also looking forward to shooting a movie as Sharon Cuneta’s son to be filmed in London.

Makisig is also the lead singer in the new kiddie dance tune, "Lucky LUCKY ME," from the album "Little Big Superstar." He appears with his "Super Inggo" co-star Jairus Aquino, plus "Little Big Star" discoveries Mica Roi Torre, Kyle Balili, Rhap Salazar and Charice Pempengco.

The new dance songs is more than just a novelty number with a catchy melody as it imparts good values to kid listeners, telling them to wash their hands before eating, help their mom at home, pray before each meal and learn to cooperate.

"I’m glad to be part of ‘Lucky LUCKY ME’ kasi maganda na ang songs na mapapasayaw ka talaga, marami pa itong magagandang lessons na itinuturo to kids like me," says Makisig. "We did a music video for it na maganda talaga ang choreography and it’s now being shown in ABS-CBN stations."

Their "Little Big Superstar" album also includes other songs: "Sisikat Din Ako" (theme song of "Little Big Superstar" with Sarah Geronimo and Makisig), "All You Need is Love" (by Makisig), "Reach for the Sky" (an inspirational song from Sarah, composed by topnotch tunesmith Jonathan Manalo), and "Araw Natin To" (with Makisig, Mica, Kyle, Rhap, Charice and Jairus). It’s now available at all record stores for only P150 and includes the minus ones of all the songs.

    Makisig Morales: Homeowner at 10

MAKISIG MORALES COULD VERY WELL BE the nation’s youngest homeowner at 10.

ABS-CBN, with the help of Delfin Lee of Globe Asiatique, has given Makisig and family a spiffy new home in San Mateo, Rizal, just minutes away from their old house -- a one-room 25-sq. m. flat on an 84-sq. m. property.

“Siksikan kami noon,” dad Jong remembers.

The new two-story home stands on a 120 sq. m. lot and boasts three rooms and plenty of space for Makisig and his six siblings—Rick Vincent, 13; Mayumi, 11; Magiting, 8; Maaya 7; Maliksi, 4; and Marikit, 1 ½—to run around in.

“I set up the old playground set in our new garden,” Jong says.

Although Makisig now has his own bedroom, he prefers to crash in his siblings’ room. “It’s more fun daw to stay in the same room with his brothers and sisters,” explains Jong.

Dad turned the spare room into a study for the kids. “I put in five study tables there.”

Charlene Gonzales’ “At Home Ka Dito” recently gave the house a makeover.

“We displayed Makisig’s ‘Super Inggo’ action figures in the living room,” Jong says. “Our new living room is bigger than our old house. I’m so thankful for these blessings.”

Makisig, who has just wrapped up the fantaserye “Super Inggo” and is now co-hosting the kiddie talent search “Little Big Superstar,” juggles schooling and show biz with ease, says his dad. He’s now in Grade 4 at La Culetta Academy.

“We bring my books to tapings,” Makisig relates.

Jong chaperones Makisig on the set and assists him in his school work. “I don’t want him to neglect his studies. I really focus on him, especially now that he has lots of new projects lined up.” Among these assignments are a movie with Sharon Cuneta from Star Cinema and a CD from Star Records.

Makisig’s earnings are “in the bank,” says Jong.

They’ve also invested in a car, a 1997 Nissan Sentra, which they bought with Makisig’s prize money from the old talent show “Little Big Star,” where he was a runner-up.

Needless to say, Jong and Makisig’s mom Jacqueline are proud of the young man’s achievements.

Makisig himself is ecstatic. “I’m very happy that we now have our own home.”

When he sees the young contestants on “Little Big Superstar,” Makisig can’t help recalling his struggling days as a wannabe.

“I tell the other kids to give their best and work hard,” he says, “so that their dreams will come true, too.”

Former waiter’s son is now big star

    By: Remy Umerez

    A LITTLE BIT

BEFORE talking to Makisig Morales who co-hosts ABS CBN’s new talent search, ‘Little Big Superstar,’ we had a nice chat with his dad, Ulderico or Rick for short who accompanies his son on his showbiz commitments.

Except for their eldest son, Rick Vincent, the other siblings names starts with the letter M and all are adjectives or “pang-uri”.  They are daughters Mayumi, Maaya, Mariquit and sons, Magiting, Maliksi and, of course, Makisig.

Makisig’s dad worked as a singing waiter for two years at Rod Ongpauco’s restaurant, Kalde-Kaldero, Kawa-Kawali  and was a  member of the Singing Cooks and Waiters. Makisig surely inherits the singing skill of his father. Combining school and work wasn’t easy for the senior Morales who have reached second year college at PSBA  where he was hoping to finish Business Management.

Makisig, on the other hand, failed to bring the bacon home when he joined Little Big Star. Nevertheless, ABS-CBN saw to it that the boy’s talent  would not be put to waste. His popularity increased more when he played a superhero in ‘Super Inggo.’

Boys of  his age associate Makisig with the food products he endorses like Purefoods Beffies Hotdog and Lucky Me Pancit Canton.

For his new show ‘Little Big Superstar,’ Trumpets Audie Gemora gave Makisig some tips on hosting.

We asked the lad how much he understands the meaning of the word and he replies, “kung paano po mag-entertain ng tao and Sir Audie told me to remember the importance of our five senses.”.

Like any other child actors, Makisig has special arrangements with Racolleta Academy where he is in Grade 4. He brings his module along for his studies on the set. He has no favorite subject and says all his grades are all good.

‘Little Big Superstar’ is co-hosted by Sarah Geronimo and the search aims to discover a young talent who can sing, act, dance and host, just like Sarah and Makisig.

Makisig has yet to do a record he can consider his own.

MAKISIG Morales said he will not quit school, no matter what, kahit pa busy siya with his hosting job for Little Big Superstar with Sarah Geronimo.

Makisig is currently a Grade IV student sa La Culetta Academy in San Mateo , Rizal. It’s also where his siblings, Rick VIncent, 13; Mayumi, 11; Magiting, eight; Maaya, seven; and Maliksi, four; study.

Ang kanilang bunsong si Marikit, one-year-old, will no longer be the youngest dahil nagdadalangtao uli ang kanilang ina.

“Iyung iskul kasi namin,” ani Makisig, “ay malapit lang sa bago naming bahay. Sabi nga, isang ride lang sa tricycle.”

The new home Makisig is referring to ay ang tatlong bedroom house na bigay sa kanya ng ABS-CBN, sa tulong ng Globe Asiatique, pag-aari ni Delfin Lee.

Malapit ito sa kanilang dating tinitirhan, isang bedroom affair where they do everything: Sleep, cook and eat.

“Malaking ginhawa ang pagkakaroon namin ng malaking bahay,” ani Makisig. “’Di na kami nagsisiksikan. Pero alam n’yo bang kahit may sarili na akong room, mas gusto ko pang magbabad, kung hindi man matulog, sa bedroom ng mga kapatid ko?

“Ganyan kami ka-close,” pahayag pa ni Makisig.

    * * *

    New kid on the block
    GUIL FRANCO (Correspondent)

    10 March 2007

MAKISIG MORALES has turned out to be the new child wonder of Philippine showbiz, proving once again an industry truism that runners-up usually end up more popular than the top winner. The 10-year-old singer/actor/endorser ...

didn't land in the top slot in the search for ABS-CBN's "Little Big Star" but look where he is now. Judges in said search found him not cut out for singing, but he has made a big hit in the song "Tito, Tita" so apt for the holidays.

This was followed by his biggest achievement so far: his landing the lead role in the network's "Super Inggo." Now that this hit TV serial has ended, title-roler Makisig says he misses doing it very much.

But he's glad to be now co-hosting Little Big Superstar with Sarah Geronimo. By the way, while Little Big Star was a search for child singers, Little Big Superstar is a search for the next complete entertainer: A young talent who can sing, act, dance and host.

Makisig is also the lead singer in the new kiddie dance tune, Lucky LUCKY ME, from the album Little Big Superstar. He appears with his Super Inggo co-star Jairus Aquino, plus Little Big Star discoveries Mica Roi Torre, Kyle Balili, Rhap Salazar and Charice Pempengco.

And if that's not enough, the biggest little star now (Makisig himself) is set to do a movie with no less than Sharon Cuneta, to be shot in London and to be directed by Chito Rono for Star Cinema.

Is he really Pinoy showbiz's new child wonder? "I hope so," says Makisig. "If that happens, I will do my best. I want to live up to everyone's expectations, especially ABS-CBN's."

Is he really a good boy in real life? "Yes," he answers. "I'm kind in real life." Makisig reveals that all his earnings go to the family coffer.

They are really poor, he says. His dad, Ulderico (or Rick for short), used to be a member of the Singing Cooks and Waiters at Barrio Fiesta's "Kalde-Kaldero, Kawa-Kawali" Restaurant. He encouraged Makisig to sing and also served as the boy's voice coach. Rick now accompanies Makisig on his showbiz commitments.

"When I joined Little Big Star, I really wanted to win. One million pesos (the prize) is a big amount," he narrates. But as is common knowledge, Makisig only ended up as a second placer.

Was he disappointed? "I was," he replies. "But my dad told me that I should not expect to win always. According to him, it's more important that I tried my best."

Now that he is earning a lot, Makisig is able to give his family a more comfortable life. They have left their former abode, which was "attached" to their neighbour's house.

They now reside in a four-bedroom house in a subdivision in San Mateo, Rizal. Makisig and his five other siblings share three of the rooms, while the master's bedroom is occupied by Makisig's parents and his youngest sibling, Marikit, who is only a year old.

    Makisig flies high

ON television, he was the high-flying kid superhero Super Inggo. In real life, Makisig Morales is flying high as one of the younger talents of STRAM, or Star Records Artist Management.

Makisig, one of the finalists of the Little Big Star talent search, is turning out to be a real winner. Aside from live appearances and recording projects with Star Records, Makisig has been busy with tapings and mall shows.

Singing remains to be Makisig’s real passion. Born on December 22, 1996, Makisig was only three years old when his parents Uldarico and Jacqueline discovered that he could “sing very well.” They decided to give him lessons. At the age of five, Makisig and his sister Mayumi competed in Duet Bulilit, a segment of Magandang Tanghali Bayan.

Several years later, Makisig, his sister and his brother Vincent auditioned for Little Big Star, although only Makisig and his sister made it. Makisig made it all the way to the finals, where he emerged runner-up to Rhap Salazar. It was while he was on the show that Makisig got the offer to do Super Inggo.

Even at his young age, he has realized the importance of being accommodating to his fans. “Kahit di ko po masyadong kilala, lagi ko pong pinagbibigyan ang mga tao,” says Makisig. “Masaya po ako kapag nakakakilala ng mga bagong kaibigan.”

Makisig is busy with various corporate and out of town shows. He and the other kids are also part of the Little Big Superstar album.  Catch Makisig live at CSI Mall in Dagupan on March 31, Robinsons-Imus on April 1, SM Sta. Rosa on April 14, SM Baguio on April 21, SM Southmall on April 28, SM Fairview on May 12 and at SM North Edsa on May 19. All shows will be with the Big Brothers dancers.

Nakatatawa at nakatutuwang kausap ang child star na si Makisig Morales, lalo pa at tinutukso kay Sarah Geronimo, with whom he co-hosts the reality show, Little Big Superstar.

In a recent presscon of Your Song, where Sarah will be featured in an episode together with Oyo Sotto, defiant ang kanyang sagot na wala pa siyang boyfriend at wala pa munang balak magka-boyfriend.

Tuloy, comment namin: “Baka hintayin mo pang lumaki si Makisig.”

“Why not?” ang ’di mo alam kung nagbibiro or seryosong sagot ni Sarah.

Considereing the proliferation of May-December marriages in showbiz, ’di ito far-fetched, ’di ba, Ian F.?

In any case, going back to Makisig, ayaw niya raw na kahit biro ay inirireto siya kay Sarah.

“Ate ko ho siya,” katuwiran niya. “Sobra ho’ng tanda niya sa akin. Mas bagay siya kay Kuya Mark (Bautista).”

Bakit, ilang taon ka na ba? Tanong namin kay Makisig.

“Kati-10 years old ko pa lang po. Eh, si Ate Sarah po, 18 na,” maliksing sagot niya.

Can you imagine ang posible sanang naging reaction nina Senator Ralph Recto, James Yap at Gerald Madrid when at Makisig’s age, itinukso na sila kina Lipa City Mayor Vilma Santos, Kris Aquino at Alma Moreno?

It’s common knowledge that Sen. Ralph is about 10 years Mayor Vi’s junior. Kris is older than James by 12 years at si Alma, more or less, 20 years ang age gap nila ni Gerald.

Sa above-mentioned couples, only Alma and Gerald are officially separated.

Ten years old pa lang kasi ako, eh.

    4. Makisig horrified!

Masikig Morales’s face creased when Manay Ethel Ramos opened up to him that Sarah Geronimo will wait for him to grow up to be her boyfriend. Sarah stated this during the media launch of Pedro Penduko at ang mga Engkantao, the fantasy series’ fourth season due to impressive survey ratings. Manay Ethel used me as witness, having heard Sarah make the statement during the Love Spell’s Sweet Sixty, which stars Sarah who morphs into Gina Pareño. We quizzed Sarah why she’s loveless until now. She mouthed her usual one-liner, “Hinihintay ko po si Makisig.” But Makisig would not believe it! Kristine turns out to be Goin’ Bulilit’s Kristine Bernardo. Ahh, boy love and professional fluff!

He strikes while the iron is hot

Who would have thought that after placing second in the ABS-CBN talent search Little Big Star (LBS), Makisig Morales will never be wanting in TV assignments? The boy became a familiar sight on primetime TV when he was tapped to play the role of a superhero on Kapamilya network’s just-concluded fantaserye Super Inggo.

Super Inggo’s power seems to have worked wonders for Makisig’s career. He does not only get to sing or act, but host Little Big Superstar with Sarah Geronimo as well.

"I thank God for what’s happening in my career and I’m so happy," Makisig says.

Emerging runner-up in the talent show opened a lot of doors for Makisig. It turned his life around.

"I give my best every time I get an assignment. Bihira po kasi ’yun di ba?," Makisig says.

And strike he does while the iron is hot as Makisig will be seen in the third season of Matt Evans’ starrer Pedro Penduko dubbed Pedro Penduko at Ang Mga Engkantao to premiere on May 5, and every Saturday after Little Big Superstar.

In the fantasy adventure, Makisig plays Moy, an Engkantao who can make fire out of thin air. He, together with the other Engkantaos like Josef (Oyo Sotto) who has telekinetic power, the invisible Marie (Maja Salvador), surface climber Dianne (Denise Laurel) and water manipulator Edward (Arron Villaflor) are tasked to protect the human race from the evil ways of Kalagua (Angelika dela Cruz). Pedro Penduko (Matt) joins them in stopping Kalagua from wrecking havoc in the big city.

Playing support to Matt is no big deal for Makisig as he enjoys working with him and the other stars of the fantaserye.

"Okey lang po na di na bida. Gusto ko naman makasama ibang bida," the 10-year-old says.

It only proves that humility is one virtue Makisig has that other stars seem to lack. In fact, he still acts like an ordinary boy off cam. The dutiful son that he is, Makisig still does his share of household chores like washing the dishes every time his schedule permits. He will do whatever he can to ease the load off his mom, Aquilina, who takes care of a brood of seven and another one coming soon.

What Makisig couldn’t stand is the rumor about Sarah having a crush on him.

"It’s impossible, I’m still young. Ate Sarah is already a grown-up," he protests.

But the name Kathryn Bernardo rings a thousand bells in Makisig’s ears as he has a big crush on the young star. Kathryn once played the role of Casoy on Judy Ann Santos’ fantaserye Krystala.

The La Colleta Academy fourth grader finds Kathryn adorable. He is also wisely setting aside ideas of ending up with Sarah. After all, he’s not mature enough to be talking about having a serious relationship right now.
