Manila 10s Rugby, March 23-25Big Smile

Two dozen rugby teams and their supporters converge on Manila soon for the 2007 edition of the Manila 10s International Rugby Festival. The combination of serious 10-a-side rugby in a party atmosphere happens over the weekend of March 23-25 at the Nomad Sports Club in suburban Merville Park, Paranaque City.

There is a big pre-tournament lunch organized by the Australian-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel on the Manila bayside on March 23, preliminary matches on March 24 and the morning of March 25, with the cup, plate and bowl finals on the afternoon of March 25. The in-between social schedule culminates in a closing dinner and party on the Nomads club pitch on the evening of March 25. Entrance to the club for matches is free. Wow, didn't know Philippines plays rugby now. I'd say its a long way to go, considering the level of talent pinoys  have compared to the no.1 team in the world right now.  But still, good on you guys . Love this sport, played it a while back.

    Rugby fever hits Manila

    05/26/2007

France will host the 6th edition of the 6th Rugby World Cup on Sept. 7 to Oct. 20, the first time a non-English speaking country will host the event.

Twenty nations from five continents will be competing in 10 French cities where the 1998 Fifa World Cup was also held. These are: Bordeaux, Lens, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Nantes, Paris, Saint-Denis, Saint-Etienne and Toulouse.

The tournament is expected to draw 2.5 million spectators and watched by four billion television viewers.

In Manila, rugby fever kicks off today as French Ambassador Gerard Chesnel leads the festivities at 2 p.m. at the European International School Stadium. Official shirts for the 2007 Rugby World Cup will be presented while demonstration matches of Touch Rugby by students and the women’s national team are also scheduled.

Rendezvouz 2007, a project which aims to gather 80 young rugby players from local schools outside France will also be launched. They will meet up with other athletes in France for two weeks.

Angeles Rugby 10’s Charity Fund raiser & Party, September 1

The annual Fat Boys 10s rugby festival is coming up again, bringing a contingent of rugby enthusiasts from Hong Kong’s Pot Bellied Pigs Rugby Football Club to the Philippines to meet their over-sized local counterparts in Angeles City for a weekend of rugby and partying for charity.

The actual game happens on September 1 at the Challenger Stadium at Clark. On the other days and evenings over the weekend, there are various Fat Boys 10s party events around Angeles which raise money for charity and rugby development, shared between the Angeles Bahay Bata Center – an orphanage run by the local Rotary club - and the Philippines Rugby Football Union’s development fund.

Last year, the Fat Boys 10s raised over US$25,000; this year the target is $32,000. Team base hotel is again the Maharajah; the golf tournament is at the Mimosa Golf Club, Bar HQ is Insomnia; restaurant of choice is Sub-Delicious for the 1,000 pesos per head charity dinner and auction.

Pages: The world’s third largest sporting event

    By John Pages Match Point

BEHIND only the Olympic Games and the Fifa Soccer World Cup, guess what tournament sells two million tickets and captures up to an accumulated four billion TV viewers in over 200 countries?

If you guessed Formula One racing—with Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen sprinting 328-kph to the Brazilian Grand Prix finish line at 12 midnight (RP time) later—you’re, sorry to say, incorrect. The answer?

    The 2007 Rugby World Cup.

It happens only once every four years and the championship between England and South Africa was aired live over Star Sports just hours ago—today (Sunday) at 3 a.m.

Simon Hoyle, who traces his roots from England but has lived in Cebu for 15 years now, sent me this e-mail co-written by Damien Allison...

“Many of you may have been flicking through the Sports Channels over the past month to find teams of huge men trying to smash each other in a game that resembles American football, but without the pads. Well, this sport is called rugby and the event is the Rugby World Cup.

“You may not know much about rugby but it’s an extremely popular sport in many countries. If watching the Rugby World Cup has piqued your interest, you will be happy to know that its popularity does spread to the Philippines, with a team based in Cebu.

“The Cebu Dragons Rugby Club are members of the Philippine Rugby Football Union and are now on their third year. The Club is comprised of different nationalities with the majority Cebuanos. There are players of all ages and the ladies also have a touch rugby team called ‘The Pink Dragons.’

“Touch rugby is an alternative version of rugby where the contact is minimal (as in Flag Football, compared to the full Gridiron game). There is just as much skill and fun involved in playing this version and it’s a great introduction for a beginner. In fact, the Pink Dragons have a ladies touch event on Nov. 10, playing against the USC, Manila Nomads Bullettes and Alabang Angels.”

Simon Hoyle, who’s played rugby since he was a child, is the current Treasurer of the Cebu Dragons, while Damien Allison is the Secretary. This year, their club joined events in Manila, Clark Air Base, and Bangkok, Thailand. Their newest trophy included winning the division championship at the 2007 Pot Bellied Pigs International Rugby Festival.

Cebuano rugby players have also excelled—many joining the RP national team. These include Edwin Angelo, Donald Bartolata, Jerrylou Branzuela, Nico Corpus, Noel Flowers, Jason Foster, Ricky Gonzales, Richard Mante, Paulin Padayhag, and Michael Sanchez.

What’s the schedule? Plenty. On Nov. 4, there’s the Cebu Rugby 7s. On Nov. 10, the Ladies Touch event. And, on Dec. 2, the Cebu Dragons vs. Manila Normads 15s—all at the Parade Grounds of Camp Lapu-Lapu.

“The highlight of the Dragons’ calendar,” wrote Simon, “is the annual Cebu Rugby Festival, held in time for the Sinulog. The first Festival was held last January, won by the Alabang Eagles. The next one is this Jan. 26, 2008.

“Next year, we are expecting up to eight international teams to participate from Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. We are actively seeking sponsors for the Sinulog 10s Rugby Festival, which will put Cebu on the Rugby Touring World Map forever.”

Simon says: “The Dragons are also seeking the use of a flat grass area (100m x 60m) to use as their home pitch and host international events. And, if anyone wishes to become a club member, to contact Noel Flowers at 09167622235 or Simon Hoyle 3438620 or email simon@iconsdesign.com.”
    Rugby.

It may not be the third largest sport in Cebu—but it’s tackled our island. And that’s good news. For as the NFL quarterback Joe Theismann once said, “Rugby is great.

The players don’t wear helmets or padding; they just beat the living daylights out of each other and then go for a beer. I love that.”

Re: RUGBY UNION IN THE PHILIPPINES!!!!!

Very interesting and informative write-up. I dont know that we have a rugby team in the Philippines. Well, Im living in Northern Ireland and somehow I watch this game. I did watch the 2003 World Cup in Australia - qualifying rounds held in Brisbane. I had also the chance to ask for signatures from the US team when they were practising at the Univ of Queensland football field (where I was studying that time).

Good luck to the Pinoy teams and I do hope that I could watch them in the near future.

RP rugby football squad proud of SEAG silver

By Ruben D. Manahan 4th, Reporter THE Philippine Rugby Football Union is very proud of its men’s team for winning the silver medal in the 24th Southeast Asian Games in Thailand. PRFU General Manager Rey Gigataras said that he’s more than satisfied with the performance of the team which debuted in the biennial meet.

“Of course, we want to win the gold medal, who doesn’t? But the fact that these players had a shot for the gold considering that this is their first time to play in the SEAG, winning the silver is truly amazing,” said Gigataras.

In the semifinal round, the Philippines scored a 12-7 victory over Malaysia. The Malaysians actually dominated the pool round, posting clinical wins over five competing countries, including a 17-12 triumph over the Filipinos. In the finals, the Philippines put up a strong challenge against the tough Thailand side but lost, 14-28.

"Our players gave their best and made themselves proud,” said Gigataras. “They suffered a 0-22 loss to the Thais in the pool round and they were able to improve their game in the finals.” The PRFU is now gearing up the next SEAG to be hosted by Laos in 2009.

“We will try to work on our game and make the team more competitive to have an even better chance to win the gold,” said Gigataras.

Meanwhile, Gigataras said the team will start preparing for the triangular test matches possibly with Guam and Macau from June to July next year. “We have 1-win 1-loss record in last year’s test matches. We would like to have a better standing this year,” he added.

Gigataras also bared plans to put up a women’s team. “It’s a long process but we’re very interested to have one.”
