    Re: Charice Pempengco

Charice's performance on Star King was also featured on the E! Channel show Daily 10 (Nov 14th).

Just saw this on YouTube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPGpFzvMUgk
Description of the video from YouTube channel coolsmurf :November 14th edition of Daily 10 on E! where they talked about whether Jennifer Hudson has been upstaged by 15 year old Filipino girl (she is actually only 14 but they took her korean age which +1), Charice Pempengco who has become a Youtube sensation with her singing. Quality is crappy but you get excellent audio.

I'm so proud of how far Charice's talent has brought her.  :)  I truly hope that she will be recognized more in the US market and all over internationally.

2nd where she hailed as "A QUEEN IS BORN"

Watch out ABS-CBN, you always ignored her talent. She'll be a great loss if ever.

KOREANS, NAPANGANGA SA HUSAY NI CHARICE!

    Jojo Gabinete

Speaking of Charice, she was Sam Concepcion’s runner-up in the Big Division of the Little Big Star contest on ABS-CBN.

Charice announced that no less than Hollywood host Ellen Degeneres invited her to sing in The Ellen Degeneres Show.

Wonder ko lang if Charice would wear a dress done by her lola to Ellen’s show. In an interview kasi, the young singer mentioned that her lola, a modista, designs and creates the costumes she wears during performances.

Going back to the ABS Christmas party, allow us to quote Rey Pumaloy, who said when he received his prize as a runner-up for best costume: “Salamat sa ABS- CBN for consistently making us feel na Kapamilya nilang talaga ang entertainment press.”

To that, we say amen, Rey.

Would it not have been better if Charisse Pempengco’s management finalized the details of her supposed guest appearance in the Ellen DeGeneres Show before publicizing it? What if, for example, she fails to get a working visa? She will lose face, right? As it is, she only got a verbal invitation...

yea she got verbal invitations...verbal invitations from Ellen herself, one when she invited charice on TV and one when she personally invited her over the phone... knowing Ellen if she wants something to happen she will do everything to make it happen...Stick out tongue

    Re: CHARICE PEMPENGCO

    H.O.P.E. springs eternal
    By Phillip Cu-Unjieng
    Sunday, December 16, 2007

It’s not often that the back story of a music CD carries as much weight as the music itself, as is the case with the H.O.P.E. (Healing of Pain and Enlightenment) album. A compilation of songs performed by an impressive array of artists like Gary Valenciano, Jose Mari Chan, Jamie Rivera, The CompanY, Toni Gonzaga, Fatima Soriano and Charice Pempengco, to name a few, the CD is the brainchild of the tireless consumer crusader/chemist/businesswoman Pinky Tobiano. A victim of thyroid cancer, Pinky recalled how when she’d be undergoing radiation or chemotherapy, she’d be stuck in a room, waiting for her treatment, and it would be one of the loneliest of experiences. “You’d just be sitting there in complete silence and a thousand and one things are running through your mind, all depressing and making you feel so hopeless. It was during those waiting periods that I wished there was some piped-in music that would somehow soothe, comfort, or at the very least, distract me, and help me push away the morbid thoughts.”

It was with this in mind, and the fact that Pinky’s own mother also recently had to face her own cancer challenge, that Pinky sat down with Anabelle Regalado-Borja of Star Records and conceptualized this CD of music that aims to uplift and “ease the burden.” While cancer awareness and outreach groups like I Can Serve and Bosom Buddies are direct beneficiaries of the CD sales, Pinky and Anabelle agreed that the music also had to stand on its own, a compilation of both upbeat tunes and poignant ballads, while carrying potent messages in the lyrics. Also, they had to be songs whose sentiments would apply across a broad cross-section of troubled people; that it wouldn’t just be music with cancer victims in mind, but music that could help “heal” those suffering from heartbreak, plain loneliness, or whatever.

The CD opens with a short narrative spoken by Pinky, and a solo piano piece by Pinky’s daughter, Pianne. While some of the cuts were generously “donated” by the respective artists from their library of previously recorded material, I especially liked the specially-recorded versions of Kenny Loggins’ Will of the Wind and the Beatles’ In My Life by Jamie Rivera. In My Life was used by my own family a decade ago when both my mother-in-law and mother passed away from cancer within a period of six months. When I introduced Pinky to Annabelle, the one song I mentioned that I’d like to see in the CD was Charlie Chaplin’s Smile. Given a subtle bossa beat, I see it on the CD, interpreted by 15-year-old Charice Pempengco. Yes, this is the same Charice whose YouTube performance caught the attention of Ellen deGeneres, and was invited to perform on Ellen’s show in the US. Listen to this cut and be very surprised to find out it’s a 15-year-old displaying such confident delivery and phrasing.

One other cut that deserves special mention is Umagang Kay Ganda, as sung by the duet of Jasper Manalo and Carissa Cruz. Carissa is the daughter of Gina de Venecia, and currently an undersecretary in the Department of Trade and Industry, while Jasper is a young La Salle student. It’s touches like this that give the CD a very special facet, one that shows how so many people were struck by the CD’s concept and readily enlisted when Pinky called. Even well known business personages, like real-estate developer Joey Antonio, showed support of a different type by being one of the CD’s sponsors.

As I mentioned earlier, Bosom Buddies and I Can Serve are the direct beneficiaries of the sales of the CD. You get an impressive compilation of soothing music and help these cancer awareness groups in the process. We can only thank Pinky for giving us this unique opportunity for spreading Christmas cheer. Besides adding to one’s personal collection, one can also gift friends with a copy.

Little Big Star runner-up guesting on Ellen’s show
    FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo
    Tuesday, December 18, 2007

After seeing Quentin Tarantino in Barong Tagalog when he showed up at the Golden Globe Awards nominations (to announce the nominees in the acting categories) last week, another pleasant surprise awaits Filipinos in the US when they tune in to Ellen DeGeneres' self-titled show today, Dec. 18.

Ellen's special guest is none other than our very own Charice Pempengco who finished third runner-up on ABS-CBN's Little Big Star search last year. See what they've been saying about also-rans turning out to be, well, "more noticed" than the winners usually are.

What's interesting is that it was Ellen herself who sought out Charice and insisted that she guest on her show.

You might be wondering how Charice got Ellen's attention. Anyway, Charice's fan who called herself "False Voice" uploads Charice's videos in YouTube.com everytime Charice has a performance. It so happened that an Ellen staffer saw Charice's YouTube videos and was impressed. The staffer called the attention of Ed Shapiro, Ellen's lawyer, and Shapiro wasted no time in finding Charice's e-mail address and promptly sent Charice a message. That's how their exchange of e-mails started.

Last Nov. 28, the Ellen staffer got Charice's contact number from Shapiro and, voila, after barely 20 minutes, Ellen called Charice and said, "Oh my God, I am your No. 1 fan. I want you here ASAP! I am so proud of you. See you here in the US."

You know that processing of a US visa takes two to three months, but Charice got hers in only two weeks. Top-rate immigration lawyer and STAR columnist Michael Gurfinkel came to the rescue.

That same day (Nov. 28), Shapiro made a call to Gurfinkel's L.A. office and, within minutes, Gurfinkel ordered his Makati office to contact Raquel Pempengco, Charice's mother. On Nov. 29, Gurfinkel's office received Charice's documents and Gurfinkel's L.A. office filed a consultation letter from the US guild of musicians that same day. On Nov. 30, the guild approved Gurfinkel's request and, that same day, Gurfinkel's L.A. office filed the petition with the US Immigration. A week later, on Dec. 6, Charice got her O1 (Entertainer Visa) from the US Immigration. On Dec. 12, Gurfinkel, who rushed to Manila, briefed Charice and her mom on the interview with the US Embassy in Manila. Charice got her visa the same day. On Dec. 13, she was off to the US for her guesting on Ellen, a big first for a Filipino artist.

"Michael also helped Raquel obtain her (Philippine) passport and US visa," said Millie, Michael's wife. "I'm happy for Charice."

Charice started singing at age four and joining contests at seven. Before placing third runner-up on  Little Big Star search, she competed in other shows, including Birit Bulilit (on IBC Channel 13), Batang Kampeon (RPN 9), Bulilit Popstar (GMA 7) and Junior Star Quest (also on ABS-CBN).

Last June, she recorded for Sweden Recording Company and last October, she was a guest performer at a talent show in Korea.

Among her favorite singers are Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé Knowles and Celine Dion.

Meanwhile, let's wish Charice "good luck" on her big break in US TV. (Notes: Filipinos in the Philippines will have a chance to see Charice's guesting hopefully before the month is over when Ellen is telecast here on 2nd Avenue on cable TV.)
