Charice debut album reaches gold status
by REYMA BUAN DEVEZA, abs-cbnNEWS.com | 10/07/2008 1:17 PM Printer-friendly version | Send to friend
The Philippines' teen singing sensation Charice Pempengco has another feather in her cap: a gold record award for her debut album, "Charice".
The gold record plaque was awarded to 16-year-old Charice by Star Records executives last Sunday, October 5 at "ASAP (All-Star Afternoon Party) '08." An album that sells 12,500 copies gets a gold status. In an interview, Charice, who became world famous after her music videos were posted on YouTube, thanked her mother network and the people who keep supporting her locally and abroad. "Siyempre, gusto ko pong magpasalamat sa ABS-CBN, Star Records, sa aking ASAP family. Salamat po sa lahat ng Pinoy sa buong mundo. Salamat po sa suporta. Mahal na mahal ko kayong lahat," Charice said. The young diva said her album's carrier single, "It Can Only Get Better", is the song she dedicated to the youth. The song tells teens to hold on to their dreams and believe that there's always hope. Charice's CD features six songs, including the hits she sang in her TV guestings on the Ellen deGeneres Show, Paul O'Grady Show and Oprah. She said two of the songs were composed by producers from Sweden. In a previous interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, Charice shared her excitement and happiness over her debut album, which was launched at "ASAP 08" last May. "Special itong album ko kasi first album ko. Solo ko ito, pinaghandaan ko po ito. Lahat ng mga songs, covered po. Pero iniba namin iyong version para hindi magsawa ang tao," Charice said. Charice recently returned to the country after several successful international guestings. Her last appearance abroad was in Winnipeg, Canada where she was guest star of Kapamilya's popular noontime show, "Wowowee." She recently performed with ASAP champions, Rachelle Ann Go, Sarah Geronimo, Sheryn Reghis, Yeng Constantino, Christian Bautista, Erik Santos, Vina Morales and Zsa Zsa Padilla. as of 10/07/2008 2:28 PM http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/entertainment/10/07/08/charice-debut-album-reaches-gold-status ***

It's another dream come true for Charice!
By REYMA BUAN-DEVEZA, abs-cbnNEWS.com 10/13/2008 11:45 AM Printer-friendly version | Send to friend
It's a never-ending story of dreams coming true!
The country's pride, Charice, again marked another personal milestone - she met one of her music idols, Mariah Carey.
Almost a month after her performance with Celine Dion, Charice was again in cloud nine after she got the chance to talk and to hug Carey who has been described as one of the best-selling female pop artists of the millennium.
Charice met Carey at Wynn's Hotel for the Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation's Grand Slam for Children benefit concert last Saturday, October 11 in Las Vegas.
A YouTube video uploaded by Charice's friend, FalseVoice, shows Carey tightly hugging the young diva Charice.
In a previous interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, Charice shared that aside from Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban and Celine Dion, meeting Carey was also one of her dreams.
"Siyempre po, gusto ko ding makilala si Mariah Carey," Charice said.
Last September 15, Charice proved that dreams do come true after she performed a duet with Dion at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Before Charice' duet with Dion, she had her second appearance on Oprah Winfrey's show last September 9, Tuesday.
Charice recently returned to the country after several successful international guestings. Her last appearance abroad was in Winnipeg, Canada where she was guest star of Kapamilya's popular noontime show, "Wowowee."
Just last week Charice was in the country and performed with ASAP champions, Rachelle Ann Go, Sarah Geronimo, Sheryn Reghis, Yeng Constantino, Christian Bautista, Erik Santos, Vina Morales and Zsa Zsa Padilla.
During the show, the young singer received a gold record award for her debut album, "Charice".
The gold record plaque was given to Charice by Star Records executives last Sunday, October 5 at "ASAP (All-Star Afternoon Party) '08." An album that sells 12,500 copies gets a gold status.

Last October 5, the 16-year-old belter was honored by ASAP ‘08 with a special segment highlighting the memorable songs that have been part of her colorful career so far. The young singer performed with Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano, Sarah Geronimo, Rachelle Ann Go, Yeng Constantino, and Sheryn Regis for songs like "I Will Always Love You," "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going," "I Have Nothing," and "The Prayer."
Vina Morales and Zsa Zsa Padilla also rendered the song "Because You Loved Me" during the tribute segment to Charice. Rachelle Ann expressed her admiration for the international star by clapping her hands in admiration of Charice's powerful voice that filled the ASAP stage. "It can only get better," goes the lyrics of the song, which is the album's carrier single. Indeed, it can only get better for the young singer who is slated to perform for the Andre Agassi Grand Slam for Children Benefit Concert on October 11 at Wynn Las Vegas.
Star Records promo unit head Nixon Sy and managing director Annabelle Regalado-Borja were both present to hand over the Gold Record award to the young singer. "You've come a long, long way. You make us all proud," says the female music executive. "This is another milestone in your recording career."

The 16-year-old Filipina singer Charice performs with Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow in the 13th annual Andre Agassi Grand Slam for Children benefit concert held last October 11 at Las Vegas.
Noel Orsal Charice performs with Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow in Las Vegas Jocelyn Dimaculangan Monday, October 13, 2008 03:16 PM Charice has been chosen to perform with Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow for the 13th Andre Agassi Grand Slam for Children charity concert. This annual event, which aims to benefit underserved children, was scheduled to be held on October 11 at Wynn Las Vegas. This event also marks David Foster's 13th year anniversary as a musical director.
In the October 10 episode of Wonder Mom, host Karen Davila talked with Charice regarding her past performances with international stars.
Last July, Charice sang "The Prayer" with the Italian tenor Andrea Bocceli. She recalls feeling at that moment, "Iniisip ko wow, inaakay ko si Andrea Bocceli, talagang hindi ako makapaniwala kasi napapanood ko lang siya dati sa TV. Karen also asked Charice to narrate the concert that she did with Celine Dion in New York. The singer recalled, "Second to the last song niya yung ‘Because You Loved Me' so ang ginawa po niya siya po ang unang kumanta then pinutol po niya sa may chorus then saka niya ako in-introduce."
Celine Dion introduced Charice as a 16-year-old singer from the Philippines before helping her relaz onstage. "Sinabi ko po na kinakabahan ako at sinabi po niya na isipin ko lang daw po na ang mga nanonood sa akin ay mga brothers and sisters ko."
The young singer also pointed out how Canadian arranger David Foster has been helping her career by introducing her to key people in the industry. The Grammy award-winning producer, arranger and composer was instrumental in paving the way for Charice to perform in the Paul O'Grady Show. David has taken Charice under his wing and he has proudly introduced Charice as "my new singer." Mommy Raquel is so overwhelmed sometimes by the amount of attention given to her daughter. "Minsan ‘pag iniisip ko, natutulala ako...sinasabi ko nga minsan, gisingin mo ako parang natutulog lang ako. Napakabilis ng panahon na ganito na ang nangyayari sa anak ko. Naranasan ko pa na kamag-anak ko ang nananakit sa amin."
She also gives her advice for her young offspring. "Wag sana lalaki ang ulo niya. Gusto ko ang Charice na tinuruan ko nung bata hanggang sa makilala siya, gusto ko Charice pa rin." With her background in singing, Mommy Raquel makes it a point to not only cheer for Charice but also coach her when it comes to performing. "Gusto ko every performance, ginagawa niya ang best niya. Gusto ko walang mali. Bawat kanta niya, kahit sa rehearsal pa lang, kino-correct ko siya para sa performance niya walang magco-comment kahit sino."

Charice brings house down at Agassi benefit gig
BEV LLORENTE, ABS-CBN News | 10/13/2008 7:00 PM Printer-friendly version | Send to friend
Sixteen-year-old Filipina singer Charice Pempengco proved she could hold her own among some of the world's best musical stars at the glitzy Andre Agassi benefit concert at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas.
The Andre Agassi Benefit Concert is held annually in Las Vegas to benefit needy children. It features A-list superstars of the music world and this year, Charice was up on stage performing with Rod Stewart, Sheryl Crow and Mariah Carrey. Before the show began, one of Charice's most fervent dreams came true, when she met and hugged superstar Mariah Carey. Charice was very emotional about the meeting. Carey also had good words about the Filipina. "I am very happy and I home I'm gonna sing with her soon, I wish! You're beautiful, it's so nice to meet you. She's so cute! I love you Filipinos, thank you," said Carey. Rod Steward and Sheryl Crow each had their turn onstage, but it was Charice that brought the house down as she was given a thunderous standing ovation by the audience. "I probably had at least two dozen people stop me on the street just in the middle of anywhere that are Filipino: 'Hey, thank you so much!' Just out of nowhere, and, ' I want to come there.' We should all be proud of her, thanks to millie and Mike. They started it," said American composer and producer David Foster, who is now Charice's mentor. Immigration lawyer Michael Gurfinkel, who has specialized in Filipino clients, also had praise for Charice. "It's a source of Philippine pride that we have a Filipina performing with some of the greatest performers on earth," he said. As she continues to go places worldwide, Charice is also gaining many fans, even among celebrities. No ordinary feat for this 16-year-old from Laguna. as of 10/13/2008 8:08 PM http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/entertainment/10/13/08/charice-brings-house-down-agassi-benefit-gig ***

"I'm very happy and I hope I'm gonna sing with her soon," shyly said Charice after seeing her idol Mariah Carey at the 13th Annual Andre Agassi Foundation's Grand Slam for Children, a benefit concert held at the Wynn, Las Vegas, Nevada last October 12.
Noel Orsal Charice Pempengco meets music idol Mariah Carey Nerisa Almo Wednesday, October 15, 2008 05:21 PM Young music sensation Charice was happy twice over when she performed at the 13th Annual Andre Agassi Foundation's Grand Slam for Children benefit concert held at the Wynn, Las Vegas, Nevada last October 12. The 16-year-old Pinay singer joined big names in the international music scene, such as Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow, in a private performance for the donors of tennis superstar Agassi's charter school. The André Agassi Charitable Foundation is one the most successful in Las Vegas. Before she appeared on stage, David Foster, who had facilitated the young singer's appearance on Oprah weeks before, introduced Charice. Forster told the audience, "Throughout the years, I've brought some interesting new artists here—Josh Groban, Michael Bublé, to name two. Tonight, I have an artist with me, that is a little more perfect to these billionaires up front to get their money's worth. "A few months ago, I got a call from Oprah [Winfrey], that's "O," Oprah. She said, ‘I want you to check out this little girl from the Philippines.' And I'm telling you, you guys are great, you've seen so much stuff in your life, I know. But you've never seen anything like this, I guarantee you." After welcoming Charice, the former Little Big Star finalist gave her all in rendering Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" and "I Will Always Love You," which have been her signature songs. Aside from wowing the audience, Charice got the chance to meet one of her music idols, Mariah Carey, who also performed during the event. Again Charice was speechless on seeing Mariah in person, like the time Celine Dion invited Charice for a duet at Celine's concert. Of course, the young singer did not miss the chance to express her wish in an interview with Bandila aired last Monday, October 12. "I'm very happy and I hope I'm gonna sing with her soon," Charice said while still feeling starstruck after hugging her idol. http://www.pep.ph/news/19544/Charice-Pempengco-meets-music-idol-Mariah-Carey ***
